Year 7 RE - The Environment

Last week year 7 students took part in the 'Council of Beings' after learning about the 1986 Assissi declarations when leaders of world's major religions gathered to put forward their views on the environment and discuss how best to manage growing concerns over the welfare of our planet.

The year 7 students discussed the environmental problems faced by different animals and plants and what could be done to help protect them. Reflecting on last week's session, students should now give a brief explanation of which aspect of creation they feel needs to most help and why. They should also try to give some suggestions about what we as pupils and teachers of Dixons City Academy can do to help protect out world.

Medieval....?

What label would you give to ‘Medieval Times’? Year 7 have successfully completed a year’s investigation into life between 1066-1500. Having investigated England’s links to Arabia, and remembering the work from Terms 1 and 2 on who was the most powerful king, they are now ready to give their final judgements on the whole 400 years. This clip about a medieval kiln (like a big oven for making building materials) being found recently in Yorkshire might inspire them. Year 7, post your comments on what label you would give to Medieval times now. Earlier in the year you considered labelling the whole time period ‘Muck and Misery’! Tell us what you’d call it now, and why!

New home for nuns

Year 10 Historians, currently writing their Fountains Abbey coursework, might be interested to note this week's top monastery-related story. A group of nuns have moved to Yorkshire into a brand new purpose built eco-friendly monastery! It has solar panels, eco-friendly toilets and even broadband internet. But why Yorkshire? For the "beauty, peace and quiet", apparantly. What do you think the 13 monks who started Fountains would have thought about this 21st century version? How much have power, size, wealth and values of monasteries changed since medieval times?! Let me know your thoughts....

Y10 Malham

Y10 Geographers recently went on a field trip to Malham.

Malham is a village located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

In the morning, Y10 students carried out questionnaires , pedestrian counts and land use surveys in the village. They carried out river investigations in the afternoon.

Discuss: Using your field trip results, describe and explain how the river’s characteristics alter as the river moves downstream from the source to the mouth.

Henry VIII's armour
