The troubled water is
changing everything. You have probably been frustrated by first-hand
experience with all of these changes; but opportunities for new business are
abundant for advertising agencies that are prepared.

We believe there is no better time to do new business than times like these;
when clients are changing how they spend, when your competition is worrying
about staying in business, when companies are changing agencies at an
unprecedented rate, and when prospects want to make decisions that enable
them to solve immediate challenges. Doing new business now is like fishing
in troubled water. Most people don't even go out - but that's also when the
pros know fishing is best. While others stay home, the smart ones go
fishing.

Earlier I posted a question to see what agency types are doing to get new
business. Now I present a few thoughts on what steps should you take in
times like this... Here are six strategies we recommend.

First, make sure your firm is properly branded. Check to see if you are
caught up in alphabet soup with a brand that doesn't say anything. Clients
who are looking for a new agency don't want a "we-are-whatever-you-need"
advertising firm. In fact, that turns them off and harms trust. At a recent
new business conference hosted by the AAAA, every client and search
consultant said "stand for something." You have to know who you are and why
you should be considered. Otherwise, you risk fading into the fog of
marketing services lingo. It is better to stand for something and not be
considered for one account then to stand for nothing and not be considered
for any accounts.

Second, focus on generating leads. That means increasing the number of
opportunities to go visit good prospects. Too many agencies only focus on
winning pitches, not working to get into more pitches. Beware of the "we'll
win the next pitch" red herring. This is where an agency is busy pitching
but not focused on creating awareness and relationships. Unless you are a
recognized agency brand (and there are only about 10 in the US), counting on
referrals and word of mouth is not a new business program. Many agencies
have attempted to flip a new business switch - "we need some new business
NOW! Let's form a committee!" Few are finding success.

Third, sell smarter. Focus on the overt benefits you offer. Make it clear
what you do why and how it gets results. Successful agencies do this
face-to-face, not by clicking PowerPoint slides at a prospect with lots of
case histories and marketing babble. Stop doing capability presentations!
Instead show them how you work, specifically with their brand, and how you
will impact their business. This means that you have to work hard and listen
to understand their problem. This sounds simple, yet it is one of the most
common problems in all client/agency relationships.

Fourth, be easy to do business with. Don't try to sell what clients don't
want to buy. Give your opinion, offer suggestions, but be sure to give them
what they are asking for. If they want the logo larger, make it larger and
move on. Forget about account planning and stop trying to get clients to pay
for it. If you are in a tactical position, play the tactical game better and
build trust. Only then can you move up the marketing ladder and start
recommending more strategic advice.

Fifth, think about growing the old fashioned way - buy growth. A cross-town
merger with another firm in your market can create a wealth of
opportunities. There are some good opportunities in every market. You can
gain efficiencies and add new services and resources, and create more
awareness for your brand.

Finally, go after the consultants and the strategic high ground by offering
consulting services of your own. This requires a separate brand that is not
linked to advertising or marketing. Too many agencies forget that if you're
an agency, and try to add consulting to your brand, you are still only an
advertising agency -Where are my ads! However, if you are a consulting firm,
then you can work at the strategic "C" level, and open up a sizable new
revenue stream. This provides more opportunities for the agency side to
follow once the consulting assignment is completed. Search consultants are
saying new business is slow. They're wrong. Their business is slow. New
business is heating up. The competitive landscape for agencies has been
forever changed. But the Superbowl is what it is. And there are a lot of unique strategies advertisers use to milk it for all it's worth. Though the strategy of making a commercial that's far more memorable than the brand it is promoting is a headscratcher.

Pete Blackshaw, of Nielson Buzzmetrics, writing here for AdAge has some advice for those with $3 million burning a hole in their pockets and a clever ad idea.

Against this backdrop, there's no guarantee of success, but a brand can certainly boost its odds by building a "marketing ecosystem" around its investments. Organizational silos need to be softened, and a host of stakeholders need to be actively enrolled: brand, agency, public relations, legal, consumer relations, digital and social media, and, of course, any media planners. More specifically, brands looking to score touchdowns should make sure they do the following:

BUT I'd argue that Blackshaw's ideas are applicable to advertising all year long. Remember what Josh Rose showed at the last power lunch. Campaigns that cross over to online are FAR more potent than those that don't...

And if by any chance you've already got a winning ad, the little number below should help you figure out a good way to show it off...

-Mike

Don't forget the mobile phone!

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 | 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | Harrah's Reno | Tickets

Brett Derricott, Agency Fusion

Would you rather lose your wallet than your mobile phone? It is this very hybrid skill set that has enabled Brett to effectively position himself as a valuable resource for both the design and technology communities. Brett has been published in a diverse range of publications including Computer Arts, Create Magazine, AIGA and Business Connect. He also authors a blog, agencybyte.com, that unites themes from the design and technology worlds.

The only thing that matches Brett’s love of all things techy, is his fervent pursuit of decidedly un-techy outdoor adventure. Someone asked for my opinion!

So, this is pretty cool! I was just asked to sit on a panel of judges Monday up at the University; Judy Strauss' marketing students were assigned the SPCA or Northern Nevada for their MARCOM proposals. From the limited details I have received thus far, looks like it will be me, news anchor Tom Henkenius (a good friend), the SPCA's Chairman John Boone and SPCA board member Kim Stange.

I wasn't contacted out of the blue or because I have supernatural marketing powers. In fact, I wasn't even contacted because I am the president of this here ad club outfit. No, I got the nod because I actually did some pro-bono brand work for the SPCA last year, so this should be very interesting to see how are initial thoughts stack with the student's proposal's. If nothing else, things like this are great because they give you an indication of how the next generation of marketers thinks.

After Monday, I will return to post... the rest of the story. Ahhhh, did I really just do that. I know a lot of us have had experience with working on a non-profit or public service project with a limited budget and it was great to hear about how Erik and his team came up with a world class campaign for the State of New Mexico's efforts to improve driver safety.

I lived there during College and can tell you that it was bad. Hwy 44 at one point was the deadliest road in the country, and the state had the highest drunk driving rates as well. In order to get a driver's license in the state I had to sit through an hour long lecture on drunk driving which included the advise that if we were to come upon a green light late at night it would be a good idea to slow down and check anyway...

That said the RJC campaign made significant improvements in safety in New Mexico in seat belt usage, reckless driving rates and traffic deaths. It's not often advertisers get to have that kind of impact.

Enjoy the interview Sterling did with Erik. We'll make this a regular feature of the club here on out. And don't expect that you can bail on the Power Lunch and just catch the podcast. We'll talk about different things during the podcast usually, so you still need to go to AND PAY FOR the luncheon so we can keep bringing in cool people like Erik from exotic lands of enchantment like Albuquerque...

-Mike

Opening photo slate provided by Lostunfound on Flickr.com :

Mingle Bells - Get Yer Mingle On

First Podcast in the Bag

Ladies and gents, I am happy to announce that we recorded the first in our series of podcasts. I will keep you posted! Also, if you have ideas for other topics or subjects to cover... please suggest. Ryan has worked in advertising for years and was on the team that brought the Subway commercials with Jared to the national stage years ago.

Ryan said that when he got a hold of the Jared campaign for Subway it was doing well, but not as well as it eventually would do. The one difference was that up till then there was a voice over with just video of Jared. It was Ryan’s idea to have him speak, in his own voice in the calm, unassuming, non salesy, personal way that made us rush out for footlong pastrami subs by the dozen.

Ryan had a lot of good things to say about relating branding to an ad campaign and creating unity between what you think a brand means and what the customers think it means and how that eventually leads to success. i.e. people buying a ton of your product. Ryan likes to deal with people and conversations and strip things down to the core of truth, ideas and personality and build it back up simply and clearly.

It was great to see some of their early work with the comeback of Pony shoes, a once popular and nearly forgotten brand from the 80’s. I think I had a pair of baseball cleats in little league. Ahhhh, the glory days…

Anyway, thanks for coming to Reno Ryan! Great talk, and great to have the opportunity to hang with you and the A2N2 crew @ Imperial!

Stay tuned for info on the next Power Lunch in November with Erik Lohmeier who’s bringing us some fresh roasted green chili from Albuquerque!

-Mike

From Branding to Brand Advertising, Meet Ryan Berman @ Powerlunch October

From brands to CONNECTIONS: At our last A2N2 Luncheon we learned about the steps to creating a brand. October's luncheon, focusing on brand communication and advertising, will feature award-winning Creative Director, Ryan Berman, co-founder and Chief Creative Director of Fishtank Brand Advertising located in San Diego, California.

Register now

Save to your electonic or online Calendar

Discuss this event on RenoBaby

Berman brings the perspective of a young creative who communicates brands to people through the essence of what makes them great. "I like giving brands a personality,” Berman writes. “If people like you, they're more likely to let you into their lives."

On Berman's LinkedIn Profile he writes about the essence of Fishtank, and good advertising. “We are idea experts,” he writes. “We think up better, smarter, sounder advertising, design and creative business ideas that build empathy with your customers and ultimately increase sales for our clients.” Ryan is going to talk about how he does that and give out all his secrets, so that we can do it too!

With a real knack for discovering human truths and finding cool ways to share them with the world, it's no wonder Ryan takes his work seriously all while having so much fun doing it. Ryan honed his craft as a copywriter at Euro NY working on a variety of clients like French's, Volvo, Coppertone, Evian and Subway.

A2N2 October Powerlunch
When: Tuesday, October 7, 2008
11:30-12:00 pm Networking
12:00-1:00 pm Luncheon with guest speaker Ryan Berman
Where: Harrah's Reno
Cost: $20 for members and students $30 for non-members.
On the Web: A2N2.com a2n2.blogspot.com

More Information: (link text)
Fishtank Brand Advertising:
Fishtank on LinkedIn:
Fishtank Blog: http://www.fishtankba.com/HangTen/issue99.html

AAF Western Region Conference Day One

We got an update today from Andy Narrai, who serves as the chair American Advertising Federation Council of Governors.
