Friends of Wildrun Santa Paws!

Do you like to give kitties toys? Do your kitties like to get toys?

Sign up for the first annual Friends of Wildrun Santa Paws! You send me your mailing address and email address, and I'll send you the address of another Friend of Wildrun who wants to participate. You buy (or make!) kitty toys, box them up, and send them to your Santa Paws friend. Feel free to be fun and creative. You can pad the box with homemade human gifts as well (cookies and whatnot) but the $$ gift must be entirely for cats. Another Friend of Wildrun will send your kitty a Santa Paws gift as well.

You take photos of your kitties opening their Santa Paws box, and I'll post them all on my blog! Or if you have a blog, post them there, and send me a link.

Call for cookie recipes for Coffee, Cookies, and Kittens!

I have decided to replace this year's Holiday Thank-You party with a great big adoption event during my vacation. I have TOO MANY kittens and cats who want homes, and not enough money to justify the wine-and-food bash I normally hold this year at this time.

All I could imagine was friends swirling wine in the cat room thinking "Hmmmm...hasn't Tiger Tom been here for the last three times I've visited?"

My goal is to get a home for big fat Wings before he gets any bigger and fatter. How about Arthur and Morgan and Faith? Not to mention these little cuties tumbling around.

So this year I'm going to have a true open house to get my kids adopted. Instead of wine and dinner, there will be wonderful coffee, wonderful cookies, mulled cider, tea, lots of places to relax, and lots of cats. People who would like to adopt a kitten, or just want to visit, or any Friends Of Wildrun are welcome!

So I could use some help!

If you have a truly decadent cookie recipe, please send it my way. I need to be able to make them at least one-two days in advance, so anything with cream centers or that won't survive being boxed aren't an option.

Mundane cookies need not apply!

I also will need to borrow a 30 cup coffee maker if anyone has one (or two, or three). I have my large coffee carafes, but I'm expecting more coffee and cider drinkers than in previous years, and I also want to make sure there is coffee and cider on both the first and second floors of the cat facility, and in the house.

If any readers love the kitchen and would like to make cookies themselves, that would be wonderful.

At the shortest, this will be December 5th and 6th. However, I have the 2nd through the 8th off, so I have the option of starting early, and extending later.

So go dust off your recipe box. You need to do it before the holidays anyway!

Great Communities - Cat Writers Association

Chance, luck, and work can throw me into meeting exceptional communities. Those special groups of people who make you realize there is real pride and fun in life. The Cat Writers Association is one of these.

Each year they have a conference, and the past two years I have been lucky enough to go. It is always great to go to a conference that is about your life's passion (animals) but with a twist (writing, rather than just sheltering and rescue, although rescue is often a topic of the writing).

This community is incredibly welcoming. Every new "kitten" -- a first time attendee -- received a sincere round of applause, and a reminder that "someday, YOU will be leading this organization."

I hope to blog more on actual topics, but in this post I want to point out that inclusiveness has its rewards. This association is rewarded not just with a wonderful, engaged membership, but sponsors (and members) who participate with financial sponsorship, products to share, and gifts.

Therefore, the Wildrun kitties made out like little bandits:

I don't think I've ever encountered such a heavy swag bag! Not only that, I arrived early enough the night before to help stuff the bags, along with 17 other attendees. I discovered two women from Ithaca (!!!!) and at least one Petfinder member. Sometimes you have to drive a long way to meet your own neighbors.

And there were so many raffle donations I actually won something. Or rather, the cats have won this beautiful kitty sleeping bag from Wool and Kashmir Couture.

I'm headed out to visit some animals shelters on the way home. After great conferences, I'm always in a hurry to get home and use what I've learned.

If you are a blogger, you are a writer. There are publication requirements for becoming an actual member of the Association, but I believe you can attend the conference as a guest even if you aren't a member. The conference *may be* held in the same location next year, so mark next fall on your calendar if this is a community you might like to get to meet!

I'll have to fill in the blanks for you later, but you can Google it if you want more information. Basically, Fiona has a dislocated knee, and it pops back out after being popped back in again. Which means she's scheduled for surgery December 3rd. I owe my excellent vet a huge "thank you" as I'm sure this is yet another surgery she is doing for me that would normally be referred to the university. And the fee she has quoted me is a fraction of what I would be charged elsewhere. So Fiona is a (relatively) lucky kitty.

She's one dopey kitty, too, after radiographs and a manipulation session. Little does she know that tomorrow a.m. she going into a cage until her surgery. She's not going to like that at all.

Her buddy Cheeto isn't going to know what to do without her.

Taco adopted!

A family came to visit with Cheeto, and ended up falling in love with Taco instead. He was off to the vet today, and somehow I've got to spirit him off to his new home tomorrow. One down (from this litter) and three to go!

A case of H1N1 has been confirmed in a cat.

You know that the anti-cat contingent will jump all over this. If you are ill, resist pulling your cat into bed along with the chicken soup while you recover. You don't want your friend to become ill. If you have cats (or any pets) and someone in your family has been ill with the flu, please avoid snuggling, sharing of plates and utensil, etc., just as you would with your children or other family members when one family member has been sick.

We have a responsibility to our pets when we are ill.

And if she thought she would at least be free of Molly the Bouncing Dog, she's mistaken, because now she has Kahlua the Twice As Bouncy.

Who wears a dress, no less.

I owe a big debt to Molly because, like a child, she socializes my kittens into laid-back little felines who are used to being ambushed.

Francine has already settled into her home, as this fast photo shows. I love it when photos beat me back to my house!

So all of the dairy farm kittens have found homes!

You can find them here at KV Vet. The ones pictures in the post below are medium, which is pretty large for cats. Sometimes two or three cats cuddle up in my cat facility, which is why I got the larger beds, but most cats would probably prefer the small.

Here's the gang at snack time. My pet cats have given up being peeved at the kittens and are tolerating them pretty well. (Post Note: only three of the cats in this photo are my pets. The others are all kittens/young cats up for adoption. I wouldn't want to scare my family).

I caught this white on black photo of Cheeto cuddling with Bear.

I finally got my butt in gear and assembled the three new beds that arrived on Monday to help keep the cat facility cats up off the cold floors this winter.

The kittens thought the plastic the pieces came wrapped in were a lot more fun than the beds themselves.

And then there is the new batch. I almost turned them away when the woman arrived at the door, except these also had cuterebra grubs and needed medical treatment. I'll be sending them back to the original owner (who found them under her parent's trailer) to be fostered once they are ship-shape.

And no, they aren't being kept in that crate. That was just the crate I put them in temporarily after they arrived.

With kittens in the place, it's time for a new shipment of vaccine. Also, the last batch of kittens had tapeworms. Good tapeworm medicine is finally non-prescription, however, buying it in the little bottles of three tablets they have at pet stores is cost-prohibitive. So I bought a bottle of 50 tabs for $169.00 (cough,cough). This little pile of wormer, vaccine, and Snuggle Safe covers came to $323.00 with shipping.

A Snuggle Safe is a wonderful disc that you place in a microwave for 4-6 minutes and stays warm for 8-12 hours. They cost about $25-30 dollars depending on where you order them, but this one is almost five years old and still works great. The covers are dirt-cheap. Less than $3 each.

I also purchased new elevated cat beds for the cat runs. Donna and Tim made me some great ones that work well in the cat room. But for some reason, someone in the run area likes to pee on them (sigh)so I'm hoping 100% nylon beds with sides might be less attractive for such bad behavior.

The elevated beds keep them up off the chilly floor now that the weather is colder.

It's National Feral Cat Day!

Kudos to Alley Cat Allies for championing a national day in honor of feral cats and the people who care for them.

Petfinder has some great stamps on Zazzle, by the way. This one is my favorite.

You can even customize them. I can put "wildrun.petfinder.com" at the bottom. I just bought stamps at the post office and was disappointed that they didn't have any with animals. So when next I need them, I'll get them from Zazzle (Note: they cost more than face value). I played with it awhile, but when it came to hitting the buy button, I had to wait.

It sure looks like Henry is making a downright pest of himself. I stole this from his mom's Facebook page. Little glimpses make the work worth it.

I need to get photos of Henry and Phillip and Francine to the woman they were dumped on, to thank her for making phone calls to get these kids out of the barn where they were abandoned. I'll bet it will make her face light up.

Recall on Diamond Premium Edge Cat Food, NYS

Another cat food recall of Diamond Premium Edge cat food. Note: Diamond also makes Chicken Soup for The Cat Lover's Soul cat food, a food I really love, but that I stopped feeding because it seemed that Diamond was awfully unlucky with pet food recalls.

Diamond Pet Foods has withdrawn from distribution the following date codes of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball cat: RAF0501A22X 18lb., RAF0501A2X 6 lb., RAH0501A22X 18 lb., RAH0501A2X 6lb. The calls from pet owners or veterinarians regarding this issue have been centered in the Rochester, NY area. All retail outlets shipped the above lots were contacted, asking them to pull the product from the store shelves. The retailers were also asked to contact their customers via email or telephone requesting them to check the date code of the food. However, if you or anyone you know has these date codes of Premium Edge cat food, please return them to your retailer.

Symptoms displayed by an affected cat will be neurological in nature. Any cats fed these date codes that display these symptoms should be immediately taken to a veterinarian.

Product testing proved no contaminants were discovered in the cat food; however the cat foods were deficient in thiamine. Diamond tracked the vitamin premix lot number that was utilized in these particular cat foods and have performed testing on another lot of Premium Edge cat food that used the same vitamin premix, and it was not deficient in thiamine. No other neurological signs have been reported on any other product manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods.

Lots of friends today

Today was a day full of friends. Debra showed up to borrow two traps to catch cats in Waverly and Corning. Great news...her little former-feral kittens that Stray Haven has had up for adoption for many many months was recently adopted! So all of her rescued friendly kitties from her colonies have found homes. Deb came bearing homemade biscotti, so you'll know what I'll be having with my coffee Sunday morning.

Holly, Jack's mom, had Facebooked me that she had a crate to donate to me, so after picking up flowers at the Farmers Market, I headed up to Cayuga Heights. Jack is his same sweet talkative self, and even let me cuddle him. I dropped of a bouquet of flowers to say "thanks for being a wonderful cat-mom!", picked up the crate, and headed out to Etna to Gary Rith's studio open house for the Greater Ithaca Art Trail.

Gary had a present for the cats. He made a gift of this jar, which is now full of cat treats!

I told Gary that just this past Thursday night, my friend K.C. had made me a gift of one of Gary's penguin bowls:

I've had my eye on this tea set since he posted it on his blog. I figured if I waited long enough, someone else would buy it, but alas, there it was, and I succumbed. It looks black in Gary's photo, but if you look at the handle on the right, you'll see a hint of the actual brown-black of the glaze. I guess you'll have to visit to really see what it looks like.

So now it is on the shelf in my house. I've put water onto boil and will use it for the first time tonight. My goal is that one day, all the things I use every day will be things created by, or given to me by, my friends, so every moment of my day I am smiling.

The cats were thrilled when I came home with a boxful of beautiful pottery. Not by the pots, of course--even their own treat jar. They were psyched to have a box full of newspaper to pounce into. I took photos, and I'll shake them out and get them posted in a bit.

The photos here were all poached from Gary's blog. And if you know how much Gary posts, you'll have some sort of idea how long it took me to scroll through them all to track down each of those photos!

Petsmart Charities Feline Forum in Chicago

Last Thursday I headed off on what turned out to be a glorious "working" vacation in Chicago at the Feline Forum. 600 (yes, six HUNDRED) cat folk, and I spent the first few hours spinning around as I ran into people from every conference I had ever been to. "Hi there!" "Hey, YOU are here too?" "Wow, what have you been up to?"

You would think after so many conferences, things would sound the same. But as more an more experts and field rescuers work with cats in more and more situations, new ideas emerge, and there is no shortage of people willing to share those ideas.

I didn't "cop out" of a single time slot. Usually there is at least one period where you tell yourself "I've heard that before" and take a break to go check email. But there was none of that this time around. There were concurrent sessions (which means, as much as you might like to, you couldn't see them all). The speakers were all wonderful, but I can't help but think Kit Jenkins (Petsmart Charities) and her constant flow of new ideas is like catnip to a cat person, so I'll mention her by name. I went to her session just to hear her wonderful delivery, and ended up leaving with my head buzzing with plans for the cat facility and a slight sense of chagrin that it took Kit's contagious charm to get my ass back in gear and get some work done at home. But that's Kit's magic.

I took the redeye train from Syracuse to Chicago (arrived in Chicago at 9:30 am Friday, left at 9:00 pm Sunday) which gave me nearly a full day on either side of the conference to explore what I could of the Windy City. I spent my money in street cafes and on water taxis. The weather was beautiful and I wish I'd had more time.

I'd heard about the famous glass balconies on the SkyDeck in Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower). While the view was amazing from the regular windows, the glass balcony was less than spectacular. It seems I'd read somewhere that it put you "thirty-some feet out" but the glass really only extended about eight feet at most, making you feel mostly like a goldfish in a very small tank. There were so many people trying to get on, it just wasn't worth it. I would suggest going early in the morning.

As promised, here's my photo of the ground.

It was a bit more Disneyesque than I expected, but I imagine it has to be to manage the number of people who wish to get up there. It was only $14, and worth it for the view, the educational displays, and the chance to take some truly spectacular photos.

Some day I'll go back with someone who is into kicking around the streets and waterways. It truly is a beautiful city.

I went to check out Sunday, and nearly extended my reservation to see if I could stowaway into the next conference!

As usual, there is a quirk to every trip I take. This time my truck broke down only a quarter mile out of the train station on my way home. Ah well. All is well now.

Burp gets adopted
