I found a link to this, the Superman that could have been. At a time when it looked like it just wasn't gonna happen, Shuster left Siegel the Superman concept. Siegel went shopping for other artists, one of whom was Russel Keaton, who collaborated with him on a very different version of the origin.

One of my favorite things about Superman is the idea of Superman and his universal recognizability. It makes him pop up in weird places, but it's almost never surprising to see him there. Places like Postsecret, where the internet goes to cut itself and whisper about being a closet pervert. Postsecret's a lot of fun; people write a secret or confessions on a post card and mail it it in to share with the world. The posts rage from dirty, self-indulgently whiny, and saccharine to genuinely hilarious and hopeful. In hopes that Frank Warren doesn't sue me, some superman related postsecrets-

I couldn't think of a Nic Cage Superman title. I'm out of practice. Any way, by now I'm sure many of you have seen this ghastly monstrosity, it's making the rounds on all the funnybook/geek sites.

That is grade A fucking nightmare fuel, man. It looks someone smeared liquid latex all over Cage's corpse and put a fright wig on it. The costume may be a real attempt made at some point, but the image likely is not. Or at least that's not actually Cage, but a horrifying mock up of him. The suit Cage tested in looked like this:

Thanks to Larry Young (who never stops being cool) for the pic, and the description, "It looks like the Tick with a S shield." Because it does. It really does.

A belated congrats to Mr Kendall of Not Blog X, one of my favorite comic sites ever. He set out to review nearly ever X-Men related comic published in the 90s, and he did it. An impressive feat, and i envy his mad blog-fu.

In other news, SIB has gone stagnant of late. Sorry. It's been a combination of laziness and busyness. The All Star articles are still coming, it's just all the silver age annotations are much more in depth than i initially realized. But it'll be neat, I promise.

In the mean time, look for my new Not Blog X inspired project, Not Spawn X, wherein I review only the bad issues of Spawn, all of them!*

These people are fascinating. Wonder Woman and Hulk seem relatively normal, even if they don't always make the greatest choices but man, violent compulsive liar Batman and obsessive Superman, they lead lives in a world only vaguely resembling our own.

Comic Con is fab - yeh, i'm one of those pms-ing Twilight bitches taking over the floor, New Moon roxx!!!

Warner bros reps are grabbing random people at the show and giving them a sneak peek at the new Superman costume for Smallville Me and friends were grabbed by one girl (details below) and taken to a room (down the stairs next to the giant starbucks) and shown it.

it's gobsmackingly awesome! no spandex it looked like leather, its one suit, the top is blue at front and back, red on sides and arms, the trousers are blue at the front and back, red at sides. the superman symbol on the chest protruding out, its red. no cape. it was on a stand we could walk around.

There were no photos allowed, but the lady (name Rosie, slightly bigger build, brown hair) said we could tell others at show, to build hype. They're showing random people the suit throughout today, tomorrow and Saturday, and sunday Tom Welling is flying in just to wear it when its unveilled at for Smallville presentation on sunday.

I just think this is neat.

Jason Quinones sent this to me. I find it terrifying. Also, he doesn't know it yet, but I'm gonna make him draw a mini Heroes Mxy one day.

LBFA used Supes in their strip again, so as is SIB tradition I plug away. It's a good one, too.

In other news Wednesday Comics IS AWESOME. I love the size, the smell of the newsprint, almost every story is good, the art in every single one is gorgeous, i love that it's an anthology, I love the quick week to week installments, I think the whole thing is awesome. I set up a subscription box for the first time in YEARS just so i don't miss any more.

I think the Superman story went terrible fast, but other than that think everything else writing wise is average to excellent, with nothing being outright bad. The Supergirl story is adorable.

I want this in a giant hardcover like yesterday. BUT! I also love getting just a bit of the story week to week. Yeah, you got me, DC. You got me good.

That is me. Hello. This may be the first time you guys have seen me. My arm is not that fat, it' s weird angle. My body is that fat, cause I like pizza. The orange and blue blob on the desk is Ben Grimm. The tattoo is in Kryptonian. It took just under two hours. It looks much better in person, as it's not photographing well because it's shiny with moisturizer so you can't see how sharp it is. It's still healing and itches like crazy. No it didn't hurt that much. My roommates do not approve. My work buddies do. My penpal was very, very surprised. I like it quite a lot.

What I've been up to

Most of my posts have been quickies and links to other sites lately. But not because I'm lazy, i swear! Real life has been hectic lately. I've been spending a lot less time at home. But my loyal readers are not forgotten! Neither one of you!

Some things I've been doing instead of updating in the last month or so:

I got this!

It's my favorite silver age story ever. I've wanted it since I saw one on the wall of a local comic shop for $300 in 1993 after reading about it in an article in Wizard that had several writers mention it as one of their favorite Superman stories. I don't think owning any comic short of an Action #1 could make me happier, and i got it for waaaaaaaaay less than $300. It's one of three Superman items I've wanted since i was 14 but couldn't find in my price range (the other two being a copy of George Lowther's novel and a Mego Supes in really good shape. I got the novel; the mego still eludes me.)

Let's see, I met David Mack at a con and got to thank him for participating in last year's charity fundraiser in person. He is one of the most amazingly nice guys you will ever meet.
This is the Superman he did for the auction. When Warner Bros made me pull the DC stuff I was going to return this to him, but he very generously let me keep it. I'm almost no longer bitter about my ex stealing all my Kabuki books as a result. No, I'm still bitter. I miss those.

Also at that con I bought a copy of At Earth's End for a quarter. It's part of my new campaign to collect every single copy of that book ever produced and mail them back to DC with a letter demanding a formal apology.

I met a girl. She's nice and has twice tried to steal SUPERDINO.

I'm working A LOT more. Nights at that. It stinks and I'm tired a lot and my work buddies keep tying to convince me to get a tattoo despite the fact that I'm 30 and that's way too old for the first tattoo.

There's been a lot of time spent with my family. Dwindling as we are we've all been making more time for one another.

I got a new pair of Converse All Stars. No one likes them but me because they are brown.

I finally found copies of two out of print Superman trade paperbacks I've been looking for, Eradication and Critical Condition. I'm very happy to finally have those.

And that's about it. Lots of nights out with friends, lots of working, lots of geek stuff. Same as it ever was, just more of it.

Also, I staged a fight between Wolverine, Storm Shadow and Boba Fett. The awesomeness was so much that it created its own gravity well and there was a partial multiverse collapse.
