A group of industry-leading Audio/Video (A/V), consumer electronics and silicon companies today announced the launch of AVnu™ Alliance. The Alliance is an industry forum dedicated to enhancing professional-quality audio/video by promoting emerging IEEE 802.1 Audio/Video Bridging (AVB) networking standards for a broad range of markets including automotive, consumer electronics, and professional A/V. The founding members of the AVnu Alliance include Broadcom Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., Harman International, Intel Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., and Xilinx, Inc. In addition to the Founders, Avid Technology Inc., Marvell and Meyer Sound Laboratories, Inc. have joined the AVnu Alliance as the first Promoters.

AVnu Alliance aims to establish a professional quality A/V experience in networked environments, whether an HD television or music studio, a car, a concert hall, a stadium or a home theater. Today, out-of-sync audio and video, glitches and delays can occur in many of these settings, unless complex, proprietary solutions are deployed. For example, in networked whole-home audio systems, there is no standards-based solution to make the speakers play in sync.

To address these issues, the AVnu Alliance is promoting the IEEE standards, currently in development, for 802.1 AVB (Audio Video Bridging) and also the related IEEE 1722 and 1733 (which extends RTP for use with AVB).

The draft AVB standards are designed to work over widely-used IEEE 802 layer 2 networks. These new standards provide networking features for tightly controlled media stream synchronization, buffering and reservation. Use of AVB enables higher layer protocols and applications to realize professional-quality A/V even if there are various lower-layer network links in the path between endpoint devices. AVnu expects to see initial deployment of AVB on Ethernet networks and anticipates other home networking standards will follow.

“The AVB technology developed by the IEEE has reached a level of maturity that permits its use in the creation of innovative new products,” said Rick Kreifeldt, AVnu Alliance chairman and president. “Our mission is to drive these cutting-edge technologies into the professional A/V, automotive, and consumer electronics markets, enhancing the quality of experience across a broad range of products and applications.”

AVnu Alliance is committed to bringing together leading companies to promote and advance these technologies. The organization will support the creation and implementation of compliance test procedures and processes that promote interoperability of AVB-enabled networked products, helping to ensure A/V devices work together to provide a professional level of quality. These efforts will enhance the network backbone, complementing the ongoing work of existing organizations and standards bodies specifying higher layer A/V protocols and applications in each market space.

“A/V networks are becoming burdened by greater complexity and the ever-increasing demands of streaming content, yet there are few options to ensure reliability in a heterogeneous network based upon open industry standards,” said Jonathan Gaw, Research Manager at leading IT market research and advisory firm IDC. “Broad, cross-industry efforts are crucial to ensure that the quality-of-experience is addressed early in the product development cycle, and to promote the interoperability of products being deployed in professional A/V, automotive and home networking scenarios that are more demanding than ever before.”

Industries that may benefit from the technology include professional A/V equipment manufacturers and installers, automotive A/V equipment suppliers and automotive OEMs, consumer electronics manufacturers and silicon manufacturers.

RVU Alliance Forming to Accelerate Development Of RUI Technology

Broadcom, Cisco, DIRECTV and Samsung are forming an alliance to develop a specification for a full-featured “pixel accurate” Remote User Interface (RUI) that will form the core of the new RVU technology. From June 2008 through February 2009, more than 3 million Linksys by Cisco products with Energy Star rated power supplies were shipped in the United States, and there are currently 39 Linksys by Cisco router models listed on the Energy Star website.
* Product Transport

Since 2006, the percentage of products shipped on airplanes has decreased from 30% to 2% currently; making the percentage of products shipped on boats now 98%. According to the GHG Protocol (www.ghgprotocol.org), greenhouse gas emissions equal 1.83 lb./Ton per mile for air transport, while marine ship emissions are 0.03 lb./Ton per mile. This has resulted in drastically-reduced total carbon emissions for our product transport, from 40,590 tons in 2006 to 8,665 in 2008.
* Factory Standards

The Consumer Business Group now holds its suppliers to higher environmental efforts to sustainability in manufacturing, product design, and corporate responsibility including: separation of recycled and non-recycled materials, ‘6S’activities (Sorting, systematic organization, shine (identify defects), standardize, sustain, safety) for energy savings and reduced waste, and lead-free development of certain components.

To Purchase Linksys Products visit http://www.linksysworks.com

Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire Pure Digital Technologies, Makers of Flip Video

Networking Leader Adds Popular Flip Video Solutions to Consumer Portfolio

SAN JOSE, Calif. – March. 19, 2009 – Cisco today announced its intent to acquire privately held Pure Digital Technologies Inc. San Francisco-based Pure Digital, creator of the best-selling Flip Video TM brand, is a pioneer in developing consumer-friendly video solutions with mass-market appeal.

“The acquisition of Pure Digital is key to Cisco’s strategy to expand our momentum in the media-enabled home and to capture the consumer market transition to visual networking,” said Ned Hooper, senior vice president of Cisco’s Corporate Development and Consumer Groups. "Pure Digital has revolutionized the way people capture and share video with Flip Video. This acquisition will take Cisco's consumer business to the next level as the company develops new video capabilities and drives the next generation of entertainment and communication experiences."

Pure Digital’s Flip Video has sold more than 2 million units and quickly demonstrated market appeal in the United States by making video simple, accessible and fun. All Flip Video products come equipped with FlipShare, a best-in-class software that allows users to easily organize and edit videos and then share them instantly on YouTube, MySpace and other popular sharing Web sites.

“Flip Video puts the power to instantly capture, edit and share video into the hands of everyday consumers,” said Jonathan Kaplan, chairman and CEO of Pure Digital. “By combining forces with Cisco, we join a company that shares our passion for video and whose global scale and tremendous technology expertise we expect will enable us to quickly expand and enrich the Flip Video experience.”

Upon the close of the acquisition, the Pure Digital team will become part of Cisco's Consumer Business Group, which includes Linksys® by Cisco® home networking, audio and media-storage products. Under the terms of the agreement, Cisco will pay approximately $590 million in stock in exchange for all shares of Pure Digital. In addition, Cisco will provide up to $15 million in retention-based equity incentives for continuing employees. The acquisition is subject to various standard closing conditions and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Cisco's fiscal year 2009. The acquisition will be accounted for in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

To Purchase Linksys Products visit http://www.linksysworks.com

Cisco Adds to Media-Enabled Home with New Linksys by Cisco Dual-Band Wireless-N Products

Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge with Dual-Band, Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router, and Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router Enhance the Award-Winning Product Portfolio

Irvine, Calif. – March 5, 2009 -- Cisco today announced the Linksys by Cisco Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge with Dual-Band (WET610N), Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router (WRT400N), and the Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router (WRT320N). These new offerings extend the Award-Winning Linksys by Cisco Wireless-N family of products to further advance the Media-Enabled home. The WET610N Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge can add high-speed Wireless-N connectivity to Ethernet-enabled devices such as Set-Top Boxes, game consoles, and Televisions for On-Demand broadcast, online gaming, or media streaming throughout the home. Both the WRT400N and WRT320N Dual-Band routers help consumers realize the benefits of using the 5GHz wireless spectrum to connect their devices to the network with a lower price of entry. The WRT400N offers connectivity in both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz spectrums at the same time, while the more value-priced WRT320N allows the user to select which band they prefer to use.

WET610N Facts/Highlights:

* Connect Ethernet-Enabled Devices Wirelessly
Consumers can get better range and speed for streaming video and gaming applications by using the WET610N to connect Ethernet-enabled devices to their high-speed Wireless-N home network without running new cables.

* Dual-Band Wireless Capabilities
The WET610N is ideal for home theater and gaming applications because entertainment content can be sent over the less crowded 5GHz spectrum, separating it from other network traffic that transmits in the 2.4GHz spectrum.

* Optimized for streaming video, home theater and gaming applications
By using enhanced Quality of Service functionality, the WET610N helps reduce video glitches to provide faster and more reliable video streaming and network performance.

WRT400N Facts/Highlights:

* Simultaneous Wireless-N Bands
As a simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N router, the WRT400N can operate in both the 2.4GHz wireless band and the wider 5GHz band, essentially providing two full wireless networks for the price of one.

* WiFi Protected Setup
To simplify the process of adding to the home network, the WRT320N includes WiFi Protected Setup--a push button feature that simplifies the process of setting up and configuring security for new network devices.

WRT320N Facts/Highlights:

* Selectable Wireless-N Bands
Configurable to operate in either the 2.4GHz wireless band or the wider 5GHz band, the WRT320N offers consumers more options for configuring their home network.

* Gigabit Connectivity
The WRT320N includes four Gigabit ports for quicker transmission of data when using a wired connection to a device within the home.

Products:

* Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge with Dual-Band WET610N
Provides consumers higher performance by bridging Ethernet-enabled devices, such as televisions, digital media adapters, digital video recorders, digital set-top boxes, networked attached storage devices or game consoles to the home network via Dual-Band Wireless-N.

* Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router WRT400N
Provides Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N network capabilities at a price point suitable to mainstream consumers.

This multi-layered security offering helps provide network protection for family PCs and other home-network devices, such as online game consoles, Wi-Fi enabled phones, and personal media players. This collaboration has led to the introduction of Home Network Defender, an Internet security service from Trend Micro that features Safe Web Surfing capabilities, parental controls, and user-activity reporting embedded on select Linksys by Cisco wireless-N home routers. Home Network Defender helps to detect and eradicate Web threats such as online fraud, scams, phishing schemes, predators and viruses before they enter the home network.
Facts/Highlights:

With tools from Trend Micro to identify malicious Web sites and content at the router level, Home Network Defender redefines online freedom and security for the entire family, helping parents to manage individual network activity from both within and outside the home. Features of Home Network Defender include:

* Safe Web Surfing – Helps protect against Web threats by evaluating security risk in real-time and blocks sites and links identified as malicious. By choosing one of three security level settings, Home Network Defender helps users reduce online phishing scams that try to steal credit card or bank account numbers. Continuous updates identify the latest risky Web sites--and even legitimate ones that contain threats. This is especially effective for game consoles with Internet browsers that on their own may have weak Internet security.
* Parental Controls –Help family members view appropriate Web site content based on the customized rules set by the parent, and can even restrict access at specific times. Unlike other products with some of these features, Home Network Defender acts at the router level, outsmarting even the most tech-savvy kids from altering controls on their PCs while helping to protect Internet users from inadvertently visiting compromising sites or revealing personal information to predators who operate over the Web.
* Network Activity Reports – Allow parents or network administrators to monitor network devices and activities, prompting instant detection and prevention of intruding devices on the home or small-business network, as well as reports of parental control violations by users. Administrators can view their network reports from anywhere in the world with their unique password.
* Antivirus— Includes four licenses of Trend Micro™ AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware to complement the Internet security protection on the routers, providing a true multi-layer protection solution.
* Less complex to use—With Internet security software housed directly on the router, there is no need to install it separately on each PC. Linksys Easy Link Advisor (LELA) application assists in setup of parental controls on a device by simply clicking on graphical icon of the device and providing the desired settings.

Supporting Quotes

“Our leading Internet security software paired with top-of-the-line Linksys by Cisco routers delivers a powerful solution for home network security,” said Carol Carpenter, vice president of global marketing for Trend Micro’s consumer business unit. “We are pleased to be able to offer smart and effective Internet protection for the home so that families can receive the strongest real-time protection against the latest Internet threats while enjoying online activities to the fullest.”

“Home Network Defender helps provide revolutionary, not evolutionary, protection from Internet threats before they reach the home while increasing awareness for parents of the activities specific to each family member. This product helps protect not only PCs but any connected device and is a must for anyone concerned with Internet safety for their family,” said Greg Memo, Vice President and General Manager, Products, Cisco Consumer Business Group.
Market Watch

* The growth of Web threats has increased by nearly 2000 percent since 2005, 50 percent of which were downloaded by users surfing unknown or malicious Web sites. (Trend Micro Threat Research, 2009)
* 34 percent of teens said they experienced unwanted exposure to pornography while online, 40 percent of which came from online searches, 17 percent from links within other Web sites, 12 percent from mistyping Web addresses. (Wolak, Finkelhor, Mitchell 2006)
* 79 percent of teens say they use the Internet with little parental supervision. From the world leaders in networking, the Wireless Home Audio system utilizes Wireless-N technology to deliver a rich audio experience to any room in the home. Users can create a party atmosphere with immaculate synchronization when listening to the same song throughout the entire home, or send different music to customized “zones”. The Wireless Home Audio solution also puts millions of songs at your fingertips through integrated Internet services such as Rhapsody, and RadioTime. An optional Docking Station for iPod enables content on Apple iPod™, including podcasts, audio books, and purchased iTunes content, to be played through any Wireless Home Audio device on the network. Wireless Home Audio products also work great with the newly announced Linksys by Cisco Media Hub that gathers and presents the available media on a network.
Facts/Highlights:

*

Complete Solution

The Wireless Home Audio product family includes three available options for playback devices that allow consumers to bring wireless audio to any room – the all-in-one Conductor, the Director with powerful amplifier, and the Player - which is the ideal addition to existing sound systems. A Wireless-N Controller enhances the Wireless Home Audio experience by providing touchscreen access to all available audio from anywhere in the home. Consumers can easily unleash audio from their iPods by simply slipping it into the available docking station for instant access to all of the songs, playlists, and other audio content on the device. In addition, with millions of songs available from Rhapsody in the U.S. and audiolounge in Europe, Wireless Home Audio users can search for tracks, discover new artists, and create playlists to be sent to any room. A “Favorites” function gives one-touch access to any content from any source.
*

Great Audio Quality, Precise Synchronization

Cisco, the world’s leader in networking technology has applied its years of knowledge and expertise to develop an amazing lossless digital audio delivery solution that preserves the full depth and richness of the recording, as originally intended by the artist. Through distributed decoding technology, each Wireless Home Audio device receives unmodified audio source material without any transcoding or compression. As a complete wireless solution, Wireless Home Audio products enable consumers to fully equip their homes with a world of music that is at their fingertips.
*

Standards-Based Compatibility

Following Cisco’s standards-based approach to networking, the Wireless Home Audio products utilize Wireless-N technology to provide greater value to the consumer by allowing each device to achieve its full potential as an extension of the solution rather than requiring that one of the devices be hard-wired to a router. Wireless Home Audio products have been built to utilize the DLNA 1.5 standard, extending the value of the solution by making it accessible to and from a broad variety of devices. The products are compatible with standards such as HomePlug, Wireless-G, and Ethernet to allow consumers to choose the mix of networking technologies that is right for them.

Products

* Conductor - DMC350 Wireless-N Digital Music Center

The Conductor is a complete, portable, self-contained wireless music system with integrated speakers that can be used to bring music to any room of the home. With these Powerline adapters, any wall socket can be transformed into a network connection to connect devices such as game consoles, TVs or computers to the home network. The new space saving design makes the adapters easy to use and won’t hinder the use of the second port of a standard power outlet. Along with the standard adapter that enables one network connection, there will also be an adapter with integrated four port switch made available in both Turbo and AV specification.

Powerline is a complementary technology to Wi-Fi and is a great solution for homes with heavy steel constructions or other radio signal blocking objects. Because Powerline technology leverages the existing electrical wiring that is already installed throughout the home there is no need for drilling holes in walls or installing network cables.

Multiple devices can be connected throughout the home network using additional HomePlug adapters, enabling the sharing of resources like printers and enable access to video, music or digital photos. “Using Powerline technology to connect your devices at home is an ideal supplement to wireless networking,” said Jens Hofmeister, director of product management, Cisco Consumer Business Group. “Because it can be used in perfect harmony with existing home networks, Powerline helps ensure that consumers get the most out of their home network, but more importantly enjoy their content throughout the home, by helping to connect all of the devices in a secure and easy way.”

Linksys by Cisco Powerline products will be available in two different versions: Turbo and AV. Built to the HomePlug Turbo standard, Powerline Turbo products are designed for traffic such as internet browsing or sending and receiving e-mail or to connect a printer to the network for example. The faster Powerline AV products are built to the HomePlug AV standard, and are optimised for applications that require more bandwidth such as high-definition video streaming or gaming.

Powerline products are delivered with a preconfigured password that can be changed by running the installation wizard. The products work straight out of the box – installation is as easy as connecting the cables and plugging the adapters in a nearby power socket.

The Linksys by Cisco Powerline AV and Powerline Turbo products are available starting in November from Linksys e-commerce resellers, retailers, and VAR partners as a kit that includes a single adapter and an adapter with integrated four-port switch, or as individual units to further extend a network.

MSRP Pricing details:
PLTE300 - PowerLine Turbo Ethernet Bridge $69.99
PLTS300 - PowerLine Turbo 4-Port Ethernet Bridge $89.99
PLTK300 - Kit with PowerLine Turbo 4-Port Ethernet Bridge + Ethernet Bridge $149.99
PLE300 - PowerLine AV Ethernet Bridge $89.99
PLS300 - PowerLine AV 4-Port Ethernet Bridge $99.99
PLK300 - Kit with PowerLine AV 4-Port Ethernet Bridge + Ethernet Bridge $179.99

To Purchase Linksys Products visit http://www.linksysworks.com

Symphony Metreo and Linksys Receive APICS Technology Partnership Award of Excellence

Companies Recognized for Goal Alignment, Commitment to Supply Chain Transformation and Using Technology to Achieve Excellence in Operations Management

PALO ALTO & IRVINE, Calif. – September 17, 2008 – Symphony Metreo, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise pricing and operations management solutions, and Linksys, a Division of Cisco, today announced they have been recognized by APICS the Association for Operations Management with a Corporate Award of Excellence based on the achievements of their partnership. At an awards ceremony held in conjunction with the APICS 2008 International Conference & Expo, Symphony Metreo and Linksys were awarded the prestigious Technology Partnership Award of Excellence.

Award applications were reviewed by a judging panel composed of industry experts holding an APICS certification, industry analysts, media representatives and academicians. Specifically, the Technology Partnership Award of Excellence recognizes a partnership between a technology solutions provider and a corporate customer, where the product has increased a company’s success.

“This year’s Technology Partnership Excellence submissions demonstrate the tremendous value of tightly aligned vendor/customer relationships and the quantifiable impact of innovative technology solutions on operations management categories such as supply chain, logistics and inventory,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “Symphony Metreo and Linksys represent the type of technology partnership that others strive to emulate, specifically in terms of goal alignment and broad, lasting organizational impact. We are proud to honor them with a 2008 Technology Partnership Award of Excellence.”

Symphony Metreo and Linksys: A Partnership in Excellence
Linksys, the recognized global leader in Wireless and Ethernet networking hardware for consumer and SOHO users, established a relationship with Symphony Metreo to address sales forecasting and inventory management inefficiences that had emerged due to aggressive company growth. Linksys implemented Symphony Metreo’s Finance Sales & Operations Planning solution (FS&OP Manager™) and was quickly able to benefit from a new forward-looking S&OP system that effectivley streamlined the company’s entire supply and demand chain.

Within the first year, Linksys recorded several quantitative and qualitative results including inventory improvements, backlog improvements and a reduction in expedited shipping costs. Specifically, Linksys recorded a 90 percent reduction in expedited shipping and a 25 percent reduction in overall shipping costs. Linksys was able to draw customer inventory down by gaining valuable insight into which inventory moved slowly, and understanding product transitions better. Linksys also gained customer service improvements such as higher fill rates and better on-time performance, and backorders are now at record lows.

“We have developed a rewarding partnership with Symphony Metreo that is built on collaboration, trust and alignment around the strategic application of technology to solve complex business problems,” said Mark Payne, vice president of worldwide operations, Linksys. “As a result, we have achieved significant milestones in our supply chain transformation strategy that are apparent both internally, and externally with our customers. With our relationship with Symphony Metreo, we will continue to build our leadership in supply chain excellence.”

Symphony Metreo complements FS&OP Manager with a suite of enterprise pricing and operations and revenue management applications that provide a unified approach to Integrated Business Planning that is necessary for global enterprises to effectively compete on factors of price, volume and cost. Consequently, the Symphony Metreo partnership has been instrumental in helping Linksys align its business and operations; increase collaboration between previously siloed functional groups; and encourage a business transformation that has helped Linksys transition from a reactive organization, to one that is proactive and responsive.

“We are proud of the accomplishments and value that Linksys has achieved in the course of our work together. We would like to thank APICS for this award, and we deeply appreciate this important industry recognition,” said Tal Ball, CEO, Symphony Metreo. “While technology plays a significant role in driving operational and supply chain improvements, it is the sometimes intangible importance of establishing a true partnership, a joint commitment to making fundamental operational and process improvements, that leads to successful business transformation.”

The APICS 2008 International Conference & Expo took place in Kansas City, Missouri, September 14-16, 2008. This is the premier educational event for operations management professionals looking for cutting-edge solutions for the global supply chain, sustainable operations, forecasting, demand management, and more. Linksys has begun rolling out eco-friendlier packaging for its consumer networking products, and it has received ENERGY STAR® certified ratings on power adapters included with more than thirty of its home networking products.

“We have taken the most important steps in our continuing efforts to help become a more green company: changing packaging and reducing the energy used by our products,” said, Marna Bullard, vice president of world wide marketing. “Linksys is conscious of the environment, actively participating in waste take-back programs and reducing hazardous wastes in our products. We are now redoubling our efforts with the new packaging and have received ENERGY STAR ratings on select routers, modems, gateways and adapters.”

What is so “green” about the packaging?

1. Linksys has removed the “sleeve” (outer packaging that contains all the printing and information about the product). Instead of having a “sleeve,” Linksys plans to print all the information on the box itself, eliminating the extra “sleeve” material.
2. Linksys also reduced the size of the box its products come in.
3. All packaging and internal documents are printed on paper that is made from 80% recycled content and we now use vegetable and soy inks.
4. Internal packaging is transitioning to more recyclable material.
The use of plastic bags is being eliminated where possible.

The new eco-friendlier packaging and materials provides more than 40% reduction in waste materials compared to the previously offered packaging. Linksys believes this is estimated to be equal to the following based on the sources we quote:

* Saving 790 acres of pine or fir forest trees (per year)*
o 1.3 million trees planted in a 5 ft by 5 ft space configuration**
* Taking 3,000 cars off the road (per year)*

The eco-friendlier packaging will be available this month throughout select retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart and online retailers on the Wireless-N Routers (skus: WRT160N, WRT610N, WRT110, WRT54GS).

Bullard said, “This change is driven by our responsibility to better how we manage the environmental impact of our products and operations. Our overall use of paper is significantly less than what we were using but the cost of using recyclable products and bio-degradable inks is about the same costs as what we were using. We hope our efforts will encourage other companies to take a look at their packaging and do what they can to reduce resource usage and waste.”

How does Linksys comply with Energy Saving Standards?
Linksys received ENERGY STAR certification on more than thirty of its consumer networking products including wired and wireless routers, gateways, game adapters and modems. This means these products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy.

The energy consumed by the power adapters has been cut almost in half. For example, a router used 4.6 watts of power and a new router with one of the ENERGY STAR certified power adapters can use as little as 2.6 watts of power.**** This equates to a power reduction estimation between 14MW and 17MW (based on Linksys’ top 10 shipping product volume, which is approximately 11,000,000 units). That is enough power to light 14,000 houses for one full day. ***

The ENERGY STAR certified products will be rolling out this month.
