How do I know this? I havebeen doing some cold calling. Shippers are giving up. Why? Higher prices. Mostshippers have a high overhead. Employees to pay, carriers to pay, suppliers topay, etc. etc. Then the minimum wage raised this year, fuel prices increased, and the customer demand went down, therefore the supply need decreased.Shippers decided to try cutting back but when that didn't work, they got out.Everybody loses. This holds true in any business and it is true in the freightbroker business world also. If shippers don't have customers, they won't need acarrier. If carriers can't find shippers, they won't need their truck, therefore neither one will need a freight broker. And again, everybody loses. How can freight brokers possibly avoid this? By having had the proper freightbroker training. Realizing that BOTH the shipper and the carrier are yourcustomers. Why customer service is of the utmost importance to the carrier aswell as the shipper. What prospecting is and how it's done. Why honesty shouldalways be the best policy. Knowing what your shipper and carrier need and/orexpect from you. Where to find your shippers and carriers. Building andmaintaining your shipper and carrier base. How and why to have a relationshipwith your carriers and shippers. If your freight broker training did notinclude all of this and more, then you missed out on some very importantinformation that all brokers and agents need to know. While knowing is onlyhalf the battle, doing is the other half. Without doing, knowing is of novalue. Shippers, carriers and brokers all know one thing, they can't do withouteach other. It doesn't matter whether this belief is right or not

Faced with difficult bias against you from the start though, you gotta come up with strong reason to counter why that issue shouldn't matter. And you can't be too
polite about it either.

Here's the formula you gotta follow to build, client base,

1 - know Your Strengths,
2 - Create a Profile of Prospects Who Want You and need you,
3 - Call Prospects that can use you,
4 - Never stop Prospecting.

It's very simple, but too many people don't follow this.

Start with identifying your strengths. Know what you do well,be specific,

Create a profile, of the people who will want what you got. This is hugely important,
and one of the easiest and most overlooked methods for getting more customers.

Far too many freight broker fallen by the wayside by believing
that "everyone is my prospect." After all freight brokers need to know the same things the agents know and more. You don’t want to open a brokerage and not know how to broker freight, unless you have money to throw away that is. And you wouldn’t want to bring aboard agents who had not been properly trained. A1 freight broker training has a program for just about any need for new and/or existing brokers. Maybe you want to start at ground zero and build a fully operational brokerage. Or perhaps you want to train new agents or re-train those agents who didn’t get the proper freight broker training the first time around. When searching for an instructor remember, Proper freight broker training should include how to get your Bond, your Authority, the type of Insurance you will need, what loadboards and dispatch services you will want to use and how to get them. The tools you will need to properly set up your office. How to build your Customer Base, find trucks, find freight, calculate rates, record keeping, invoices, who will pay you and who you will pay, and whether or not you should use a factoring company. All of this is as much a part of building your freight brokerage as it is in running your freight brokerage. Without knowing all the ins and outs of freight broker business, you probably won't be successful. So keep in mind that the PROPER Freight Broker Training should start from the beginning for both the broker training and/or the agent training.
Copyright2009 Jack C MartinA1 Freight Broker Training
Please visit our website http://www.a1freighttraining.com/

Will Diesel Prices Be On The Rise Again?

Freight broker or freight broker agent may be your solution since diesel prices will most likely be on the rise again, along with gasoline and home heating fuels. This could happen as early as January 2009. Why? Because "OPEC last week agreed to cut production quotas by 9% in order to revive prices as a global recession reduces demand for crude. The group agreed to a record 2.46 million barrel-a-day cut at a meeting in Oran on Dec. 17. The 13 members are next scheduled to meet March 15 in Vienna."(dated 12/21/08) This story can be found at: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=ay4FXfvFpiBw&refer=home
Just where does this leave the Trucking Industry? Paying 90 cents or more per gallon than autos will. It is rumored that gasoline prices will be around $4 per gallon by the end of December 2008 or the first of January 2009 and reach about $12 a gallon by June or July of 2009. Hopefully it is just a rumor, but who knows. If the rumor turns out to be for real, the Trucking Industry will feel it the hardest. Why? They already pay higher road use taxes, insurance and fuel prices. Look around you, diesel prices are anywhere from 75 cents to 95 cents per gallon higher than gasoline right now. What are truckers doing about it? Leaving truck driving to become freight brokers or freight broker agents. This is one reason why you are seeing freight broker training classes, schools and academies popping up all over the place. Truckers who are just flat out tired of higher fuel prices, having to fight for a decent rate, or settle for a lower rate in order to keep their trucks moving, are getting out of the business. And I don’t blame them I would too under these circumstances. And now, DHL is leaving the US and going International as of January 2009. What is going to happen to their roughly 9500 drivers? If they want to stay in the Transportation Industry, they will either find a new driving job or they might look into freight broker training. The freight brokering side of the Transportation Industry may take time to break into and build up, but there can be a lot less headaches and better rewards in many areas.
Copyright 2008 Jack Martin
a1freighttraining.com
Please visit our website http://www.a1freighttraining.com/

Freight Brokers-Who Uses Them

Freight brokers are used in the transportation industry for a variety of reasons. Some manufacturers don’t own trucks and therefore have no choice but to use Freight Brokers. While others may use freight brokers because they don’t have enough trucks. And then there are those who will use a freight broker only once in awhile. But regardless of the reason, freight brokers will always be in demand. As long as there are manufacturers, there will be a need for freight brokers.
Due to the instability of the economy today, higher diesel fuel prices, road use taxes, insurance and regulations, more and more trucking companies, large and small, are now using freight brokers in the form of a brokerage to enhance their company and at the same time, off-set the higher prices. Owner operators, smaller trucking companies, and now, even the larger ones are beginning to realize the importance of having a freight brokerage. And the good part is that it doesn't have to be an in-house brokerage. Freight brokers can have agents in any city or state across the U.S.
Opening a brokerage may be your way to go instead of going out of business. You can open a brokerage as a separate entity. By doing this, you will not only be able to load other trucks, but you can load your own truck/s as well. This way you can have the options of offering quick-pay, advances and the like. Charge a percentage for either service or both services and the brokerage has made a profit as well as a commission. Brokers seem to be the going thing in the transportation industry today.

Copyright2008 Sharon D. It is not a quick fix, it will take you some time to build, (6 months to 2 years) but with the proper training, it can be very rewarding in the long run. And the best part is you can train AND work right from your home. No traveling and no expensive gadgets to buy or sell. All you will need is a computer, a fax machine, a printer, telephone, and a good long distance company. After your training, you will be ready to start working. By now you are probably asking yourself what is a Freight Broker Agent and what do they do. A Freight Broker Agent is the intermediary for the Shipper and the Carrier. The Shipper has products he/she needs transported. The Carrier is looking for the product to transport. Your job will be to put the two together. You will work under the Brokerage and be paid a commission. Much like a sales position only you are working from home and on the telephone. So if you are a go-getter, enjoy talking to people, can use a calculator, and are able to think fast, this may be the career for you. Even though the Freight Broker Agent business has been around for a few years, it is becoming a new trend for the Brokerage. By being a home based business, the Brokerage can have an Agent or Agents in every State if it wishes. (these are called outside agents, but if the agent works inside the brokerage with the broker, they are called in-house agents) The Freight Broker Agent Business continues to grow both ways.
Please visit our website http://www.a1freighttraining.com/

Freight Broker Training-To Open A Freight Brokerage

To open a Freight Brokerage is not necessarily hard or real expensive but, it does require proper training and correct procedures. I seriously suggest you be a Freight Broker Agent for a year or two before opening a Brokerage. Why? Because you will need to know the exact same things an Agent knows, and more. But if you don’t want to go that route, you can put everything in place and then hire someone who is reputable and well experienced to run the Freight Brokerage for you. Yet it would still be a wise decision to at least have the proper operations training. That way you will have a pretty good idea of what will be taking place. You wouldn’t want to put your money and your reputation out there and then trust it entirely to someone else would you? I know I wouldn’t. And of course you can always hire a Logistics Consultant to help out when needed. But before you decide what you want to do, consider the following information:

FOR A BROKERAGE: you will need to have in place before you open your door for business: your License, UCR, BOC3, BMC84 or BMC85, a good working order knowledge, and although not required, I recommend that you carry what is called Contingent Cargo Insurance. You will also need to consider your finances. Do you have enough cash for, or a good enough credit standing for your $10,000.00 Bond? Will your cash flow allow you to pay your Carriers in a timely manner (usually within 21 days) or will you need the services of a Factoring Company? Do you plan to have any Agents, either In-house or Outside, or will you be doing it all yourself? Do you know how to use the Freight Broker tools you will need such as load boards and dispatch software?

FOR THE FREIGHT BROKERAGE AND THE AGENT: you will need to know how to build your Customer Base, where to find Carriers, how to check out both the Shippers and the Carriers. The different rates you will use and how to negotiate them. Where your pay structure comes in, contracts, legal aspects, and special equipment. What paper work and records to keep and for how long. How to use the load boards, when, where and how to start your workday, etc.

This may all seem a bit much and a little confusing and it will be without the proper training and guidance. So, before you open a Freight Brokerage, get the straight facts.

Copyright 2008 Sharon D Martin

content writer/co-author for
a1freighttraining
Please visit our website http://www.a1freighttraining.com/

CompleteDispatchWeb

A1 Freight Broker Training Proudly endorses Complete Dispatch Web Freight management solutions, provide your company a jump start in the freight brokerage business. Why? Because reputable brokerages wants only those agents who are already established. Agents who have their own following, and who can bring something to the their table. This is not fair. The new agents have done their homework. And now they are ready to go out in this big competitive world of brokering and put their knowledge to work. But how can a new agent expect to prove their worth if no one will give them a chance? Did the reputable brokerage not have to start somewhere? How did they get where they are now? And just where would they be today if someone had not given them a chance? They were not born knowing what to do. And they certainly did not grow up without making mistakes. Are the more reputable brokerages so busy that they don’t have time for new agents? Or are they just too lazy to fine-tune them? Rather it is finances, strategy, planning or just merely advice, EVERYONE needs a little help along the way. Why should it be any different for new agents? Have the more reputable brokerages gotten so big that they’ve forgotten where they came from? Do they not remember what it was like when they were new? How they had to struggle to prove themselves? Did they forget the little gold nuggets that helped them to succeed? Didn’t someone have to hold their hand for three or four weeks while they got their routine in order? Sure they did. So again, why should it be any different for the new agents now? What might reputable brokerages do to remedy this injustice? Maybe they could set up a 30-day counseling room to coach them in difficult areas or to instruct the new agents on their procedures. After all, every brokerage has their own way of doing things, as does any business. Another suggestion might be to contract a qualified outside Trainer/Consultant to do the fine-tuning. Don’t just discourage a new agent by simply saying "no," especially when there are options. Remember the rewards of give a little receive a lot. Reputable brokerages like any successful business, should, in my opinion, always remember where they came from.
Copyright 2008 Sharon D. Contingent Cargo Insurance is an insurance policy usually carried by Freight Brokerages as a customer-based protection plan. Why does a brokerage need it since the Carrier has to have insurance? When would a brokerage need Contingent Cargo Insurance? First of all, there is no law that requires a Freight Brokerage to carry contingent cargo insurance. They DO NOT have to carry it. But, most shippers won’t deal with a brokerage that doesn’t have it. Why? Most shippers feel they can sue the broker or collect from the brokers Contingent Cargo Insurance if a load is hijacked or once delivered, is damaged or missing pieces. But, this is not true. That falls under the carriers insurance. A Brokerage does not personally load the freight, count it, inspect it, nor haul it. And a lot of times the carrier does none of this BUT haul it. Yet the carrier takes possession of the load and is therefore responsible for it. If it is hijacked, damaged, or is missing pieces, the carrier and/or receiver goes back to the shipper, NOT to the Brokerage. Then the carrier and shipper work it out or the carrier, shipper and receiver work it out. The Brokerage is truly the intermediary, but, YES, there are times when he/she can be held responsible. Below are the only two reasons I know of as to when a Brokerage would be better off in carrying Contingent Cargo Insurance. (1) Plain and Simple: If the Brokerage signs an agreement with the Shipper stating that he/she will take responsibility if something goes wrong. (2) If the Brokerage fails to check out the Carriers insurance and something does goes wrong. This can hold true if a Brokerage is exceptionally busy or chaotic one day and he/she forgets to check the Carrier insurance. Maybe the Brokerage has decided to take on Agents or has hired some new Agents and out of nervousness, they forget to check the Carrier insurance. Or Maybe the Brokerage has done business with the Carrier before and doesn’t think he/she needs to check the carrier insurance again. Then, all of a sudden while in route, the Carrier wrecks and a whole load of eggs are broken. No problem, the Carrier’s insurance will cover it. WRONG! The Carrier had forgotten to pay his insurance premium that month and it was cancelled three days ago. But the Broker didn’t know this because he/she forgot to check the Carrier’s insurance. Due to the negligence of the Broker, having Contingent Cargo Insurance would surely save the day.
©2008 a1freightbrokertraining
Please visit our website http://www.a1freighttraining.com/

PROPER TRAINING is an important key for SUCCESS in ANY business. This means having more than a license, an office, a computer, or even cash. It means knowing your chosen field inside and out. This is especially true in the Freight Brokering side of the Transportation industry. A business where time is of the essence and a mistake could cost you dearly. You have to be a salesman, an accountant, and an intermediary all rolled into one. You wouldn’t go to a hair stylist with a broken arm or to an accountant for a toothache so why trust your Broker training to someone who hasn’t been there and done that? Your success depends on your knowledge. And your knowledge depends on your receiving the proper training. Search for an instructor who knows the freight broker industry. One who has the experience in dealing with carriers, building customer bases, and knows how to negotiate rates. Ask the instructor about his/her experience. If he/she doesn’t have any of this experience, why would you expect to receive proper training? You wouldn’t. Could this Freight Broker trainer be a success based SOLELY on the information they are going to give you? There can’t be NO doubt about it, they SHOULD be able to. Ask. If not, keep searching. You don’t have to settle for the basics when you need to know what’s in the middle too. Nor do you have to spend thousands of dollars on a three-day class or a weekend seminar that once its over, its over. Proper Freight Broker training should cover where, what, when, why, who, and how. You can’t be a success if you don’t know where to start, what to say, whom to ask, when to listen, why it’s done a certain way, and how to do it that way. Like I said, PROPER TRAINING is an important key for SUCCESS, in ANY business.
Please visit our website http://www.a1freighttraining.com/Introduction to Freight Brokering

This introduction serves as an informative guide to what you will need to know to become a Freight Broker. If you are afraid of the phone or do not like to talk on a phone, then this business is NOT for you. A Freight Broker will spend 90% of his/her time on the phone. Cold calling Customers, talking to Customers, talking with Carriers, etc.
With that said, let’s move on to the important things that you will need to know. With the most important factor being Customer Service. It does not matter if you are a Broker or an Agent working for a Broker, If you do not take care of your Customers, you won’t need to worry about finding Carriers. If you do not take care of your Carriers, you won’t need Customers. No Customers, No Carriers, No Business, get the idea?
If you want to open a Freight Brokerage there are several things you will need to do first. You will need to get your Authority, your Bond, your BOC3, your insurance, and your UCR (enforcement for the UCR begins 01/01/2009). Then you will need the proper training to open and operate your Brokerage. Should you desire to be an Agent, you too will need the proper training. You will need to know the same things the Freight Brokerage knows. After all, you will most likely be working under a brokerage. Below are some of the Basic but Important things you will need to know:
The MAIN differences between the Brokerage and the Agent and their responsibilities.
How and where to find Customers. How and where to find Carriers. How to provide the BEST possible Customer Service. The different trailers and what they can haul. What "rates" are and how they are calculated and applied. Loadboards and how they are used. The proper paperwork for both Carrier and Shipper. Special equipment needed for trailers such as tarps, loadlocks, straps/tiedowns, pallets, etc. And last but not least, the legalities attached to Brokering. If you do not know these things inside and out, you are NOT properly trained. The MIDDLE man. One who can take several different sides of a situation, merge them into one situation, have a happy ending and do it SUCCESSFULLY. This is very true in any Industry, but is especially true in the Transportation Industry. Negotiations take place here at a very fast pace and leave no room for error.
Negotiating is the process of arriving at a satisfactory conclusion for all parties involved.
Effective Negotiating is the approach, technique and structure used to accomplish such satisfaction.
You MUST have Good Quality Negotiating Skills in order to do this.
In negotiating, you must first learn to LISTEN. LISTENING is your key to SUCCESS in EVERY negotiation. Listen to what is BEING said and what is NOT being said. There are those who know WHAT they want to say but don’t know HOW to say it. And there are those who know what they WANT, but not the STEPS needed to obtain it. So, LISTEN to what is being said by all those involved. Let someone else start the negotiation process. This way you are free to take note of what is already being agreed upon and can start putting your negotiation plan together. Structure your notes, ideas and plan into a type of outline. From what seems to be the most important factor down to the least important. This way you will have a clear and direct route of WHEN you want to begin the final negotiation, WHICH direction you will want to take it, and HOW you plan to succeed at the end.
Finally, draw attention to your negotiating abilities by being confident. Talk clearly and be direct. Highlight the objective then go straight to the point. This will leave less room for those involved to change their minds and no one will be confused. Speak with professionalism. State your solutions but with a hint of suggestion. This will help keep everyone focused and leave less room for hostility. By allowing OPINIONS to form, and IDEAS to follow, you can fill in the blanks and end the negotiation with the results you had originally intended. Hereby skillfully and professionally demonstrating the Art of Negotiating.
Brought to you by A1 Freight Broker Training
Please visit our website http://www.a1freighttraining.com/

Freight Broker Yes or No

Starting a new freight brokerage business automatically brings skepticism. When you start cold calling, don’t be surprised if you get 50 “no” answers before you get 1 “yes” answer. Why? Freight Brokers have not had a very good reputation for quite a few years now. Thus, making it even harder for a new freight broker to get started or become well established. Can it be done? Yes. Is it going to be easy? No. By now you are probably wondering why a freight broker will get 50 “no’s” before getting 1 “yes.” Bad business practices. How? There were and are a lot of freight brokers out there that will take the money and run. Meaning? The freight broker decides to take a load from the shipper, then he contracts it to a carrier, collects the monies in due time but then he never pays the carrier. This can become quite profitable in the 30-120 days it takes for the circle to be completed. By then, the freight brokerage office has closed down, taken the profits, paid another surety bond, and opened a new freight brokerage in another name. Thereby starting the process all over again. Is it legal? No. But anybody can go out of business, and any company can close down, so most of the time they get away with it. While this is a scary thought, new freight broker companies should be aware of why they get more "no's" than "yes's" And how they can help overcome a lot of the skepticism. Yes, you can be honest. Yes, you can have integrity. Yes, you can provide excellent customer service. Yes, you can keep up with the FMCSA. And as it stands now, every freight brokerage must have a Surety Bond in place. But hopefully in the near future, the cost of the Surety Bond will be raised in order to help weed out a lot of those who make a habit of doing this type of business. And this is not all that they have done to tarnish a freight brokers' reputation. A lot of freight brokers out there still make a living by ripping off the truck. What does this mean? They keep monies that should go to the truck but does not because the freight broker lies. The freight broker lies? Yes. Should you lie? No. How do they lie? When they tell the truck the extra fees that are sometimes required aren’t payable, when in fact they were paid to the freight broker. Only the freight broker did not pass them on to the truck, he pocketed them. Do things like this really happen? Yes. Should they happen? No. Sad but true, these are some of the obstacles a new freight broker has to overcome. But now you know some of the reasons why a new freight broker might get 50 "no" answers before he gets 1 "yes."
Please visit our website
