The locals admired his new look, and complimented him on how realistic it looked. Eventually, Joe asked him for a closer look, and, though slightly embarrassed, he slipped the wig off and handed it over.

However, as soon as Joe took the wig, he began to complain about everything:
the weather, his job, the quality of the food, anything and everything you could think of.

Puzzled by this irresistable urge to moan, he handed the wig to Tom to give back to Bill, and suddenly his normal good humour re-asserted itself.

Tom, however, even in the few seconds he had the wig in his hands, had already announced to the pub that his wife was useless: couldn't cook, and was ferociously dirty around the house.

Again, as soon as he had handed the wig back to Bill, the torrent of complaints dried up, and he was his old cheerful self again.

The three friends, completely confused and puzzled, were starting to discuss what on earth had happened, when the barman leant across the counter towards them, and told them not to worry about it.

"Why?" they asked.

"Ah, 'tis perfectly natural, lads!" he said. Here is a review of a new film out, which will hopefully dry up and blow away quickly before it poisons many more minds with its morally debased, demeaning and disgusting propaganda.

The Hangover is a crude, crass comedy that manages to be smart at the same time - oh, and funny as hell.

Let me pause right there...think about that statement logically...how can something be "as funny as hell?" Even if you don't believe in a literal hell, how can 'hell' be a logical (or sensible) modifier of 'humor?" Since when did hell become Yuk Yuks? That's kind of like saying "as funny as the holocaust." Who comes up with this and for whom does it make sense?

And by the way, if something is crude and crass, that somehow makes it interesting and desirable? ...sad.

The plot of The Hangover is very simple: Three buddies (and one tag-along) head to Las Vegas to celebrate the impending marriage of one of their own with a bachelor party weekend. They get so incredibly blasted on the night of their arrival that they don’t remember a single thing that happened - of course maximum mayhem ensued during the evening, and they must piece together because the groom-to-be has gone missing.

Now I’m pretty finicky when it comes to comedies, especially the R-rated variety. “Stupid-funny” doesn’t work for me at all, so based on some of what I’d seen in the marketing I was a bit concerned I was possibly in for some vulgar, dumb humor. While The Hangover is certainly vulgar and not for everyone, I found it to be far from stupid. The dialog and characters are brilliant, and had me laughing throughout most of the film.

Rest assured this movie earns its R-rating so for the love of Pete leave the kids at HOME for this one. If you can’t afford a babysitter this week, save a couple of bucks a day and wait until next week to see it. What really blew my mind was the fact that the most extreme scenes in the movie actually don’t appear until the credits are rolling. I won’t give away anything other than to say if you’re offended by sexually explicit material, you’d better leave just as the credits begin to roll. Frankly I’d like to know how the hell they got the very last thing that appears past the MPAA and retained an R rating.

However if you’re into R-rated comedies and don’t mind crude and crass humor, The Hangover is not to be missed.

This 'movie' is rated R for perverse language, sexual content including nudity, and some drug material.
Wow! ...and this appeals to, ...who? Last time I checked, 'perverse' meant: "purposely deviating from what is accepted as good, proper and reasonable." Wouldn't that make it 'deviant?" And those who enjoy this- 'deviants?'

If you "don't mind crude and crass humor," perhaps there is something else you should spend your money on...counseling.

Laurel and Hardy Weigh in on Homosexual Marriage

We all got up at 10 for church. Sam has to go to church with me every two weeks, and his friends often tag along. They don't hate church, because no one is making them go. They are actually all believers, too, cool guys, who sometimes pray. One of them prayed with us when we were caught in a snowstorm on a ski trip. I know Sam believes that Jesus is true -- why wouldn't he be? Still, he mocks me for being a Jesus freak, even though in the middle of the night when he can't sleep, he wakes me up for prayer and a backrub.

But he hates church.

So why do I make him go? Because I want him to. These are bewildering, drastic times we live in, and a little spiritual guidance never killed anyone. And I think it's a fair compromise, that it's only every other week. Also, I make him go because I can -- I wrote a piece about this years ago, about why I made him go to church, and this was the main reason. And I still can. He has no job, no car, no income. He's basically a freeloader. He needs to stay in my good graces.

I love him more than life itself, but while he lives at my house, he has to do things my way. Also, I think there are worse things for kids than to have to spend time with people who love God; teenagers who do not go to church are also adored by God, but they don't get to meet some of the people who love God back. Learning to love back is the hardest part of being alive.

(excerpt from "Because I'm the Mother" by Anne Lamott)

bring it

Cain hated Abel for standing higher in God's esteem than he felt he himself did so he killed him. King Saul hated David for stealing the hearts of the people with his winning ways and tried to kill him every chance he got. Saul of Tarsus hated the followers of Jesus because he thought they were blasphemers and heretics and made a career of rounding them up so they could be stoned to death like Stephen. By and large most of us don't have enemies like that anymore, and in a way it's a pity.
It would be pleasant to think it's because we're more civilized nowadays, but maybe it's only because we're less honest, open, brave. We tend to avoid fiery outbursts for fear of what they may touch off both in ourselves and the ones we burst out at. We smolder instead. If people hurt us or cheat us or stand for things we abominate, we're less apt to bear arms against them than to bear grudges. We stay out of their way. When we declare war, it is mostly submarine warfare, and since our attacks are beneath the surface, it may be years before we know fully the damage we have either given or sustained.

Jesus says we are to love our enemies and pray for them, meaning love not in an emotional sense but in the sense of willing their good, which is the sense in which we love ourselves. It is a tall order even so. The South African black love the lords of apartheid? The longtime employee who is laid off just before he qualifies for retirement with a pension love the people who call him in to break the news? The mother of the molested child love the molester? But when you see as clearly as that who your enemies are, at least you see your enemies clearly too.

You see the lines in their faces and the way they walk when they're tired. You see who their husbands and wives are maybe. You see where they're vulnerable. You see where they're scared. Seeing what is hateful about them, you may catch a glimpse also of where the hatefulness comes from. Seeing the hurt they cause you, you may see also the hurt they cause themselves. You're still light years away from loving them, to be sure, but at least you see how they are human even as you are human, and that is at least a step in the right direction. It's possible that you may even get to where you can pray for them a little, if only that God forgive them because you yourself can't, but any prayer for them at all is a major breakthrough.

In the long run, it may be easier to love the ones we look in the eye and hate, the enemies, than the ones whom--because we're as afraid of ourselves as we are of them-- we choose not to look at at all.

                                                                    -Buechner
