I think I had this info filed in the "asscrack" of my brain long ago but since it never became an issue, I forgot about it. The girls had spent an extra hour out in the pasture yesterday as I had taken Zoe to see The Dark Night in the afternoon. By the way an awesome movie and when I called them in I noticed Kola drop a bucket of "water" out of her mouth. At the time I thought she had just gotten a drink and was holding her water. I later went out in the evening to remove their masks and she did it continuously. I called the vet after a good dose of Pro-Bio. She had "Slobbers". Did a quick exam and we gave her a bucket of electrolytes, which I don't think she drank, but seems much better today. They are now locked out of pasture and early next week , Steve and I will completely weed kill anything out there. We'll play it by ear as to when they may be allowed back out there, but for now it closed indefinitely. This all makes sense as it was a very wet spring. The poor horses were beside themselves because as I waited in the dark for the vet the coyotes were circling. I have no voice today. I made myself big and loud until Steve came out with the gun and then I fired a couple of shots into the field. They must have still been out there at 0100 am when I went out to check on the animals as the goats were clamored into the same corner looking out to the field and the girls were still on high alert, although I didn't hear them yelping like I did earlier. The whole place was surrounded. In Quotes below is all about Slobbers. Poor babies!

"Slaframine poisoning (Slobbers) (Figure 1) should be considered, especially in a cooler and wetter spring or fall. Spring and fall provide ideal environmental conditions for the proliferation of clovers in pastures. The cooler wet conditions are also ideal for the growth of the fungus Rhizoctonia leguminicola, commonly known as black patch. The fungus infects red clover (Trifolium pratense), white clover (Trifolium repens), alsike clover (Trifolium hybridum) and alfalfa. The name ‘black patch' is derived from the bronze to black spots or rings observed on the leaves and stems (2). Rhizoctonia leguminicola produces the mycotoxin slaframine or slobber factor. It can be present on both pasture and in stored dry hay. The fungus persists on infected fields from year to year. Slaframine can be active in stored hay for 10 months or more; however, its biological activity does decrease. Fresh hay can contain the equivalent of 50-100 ppm slaframine, which can decrease after 10 months by 10-fold to 7 ppm. Concentrations above 10 ppm may be associated with clinical signs (3). The analysis for slaframine (1-acetoxy-6-amino- octahydroindolizine) is not readily available.
The most common clinical signs observed in horses include: excess salivation, lacrimation, colic and diarrhea. One case reports abortion in a mare (4). Clinical signs often develop 1-3 hours after consumption of the contaminated forage and subside 48-72 hours after withdrawal from the offending forage. Atropine may provide symptomatic relief of salivation and diarrhea (3).
Take Home Message
Slaframine poisoning is non life threatening.
No treatment is necessary, except changing the feed.
Clovers can be an excellent source of nutrients but are occasionally associated with excessive salivation, oral ulcers, laminitis, colic, photosensitization and liver failure."

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-82321690097786239762008-07-24T10:57:00.000-07:002008-07-24T11:12:10.279-07:00Pet or Livestock?

OK, I'm going to stir things up a bit here and ask all of you out there whether you consider your horse a pet or livestock? I used these pics of people riding cattle because cattle are considered livestock. This question depending on how it answered poses more questions which I will not start here as it is so controversial. I think you know where this can lead, but as that question has been asked so many times during other discussions and yet has not been answered. Should we let the government decide? I have to say for me it's split a bit. My horses are treated more like pets as I don't do a lot of riding and I don't use them for ranching or competitions, however, I am not opposed to riding your horse or competing or using them the way they have always been used. So does that make them livestock and open to the same rules of other livestock? The reason I used these pictures as I had once argued the "livestock" issue on another forum and someone came back to me saying that cattle aren't ridden. So I thought I would put that to rest right away. So weigh in here folks and let's see what the general consensus is!

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-22357889057561483022008-07-23T07:58:00.000-07:002008-07-23T08:09:03.092-07:00Views From This Week

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-52116347288537465162008-07-22T10:34:00.001-07:002008-07-22T11:09:23.558-07:00Proud To Be.........

So along with the recent "meme's" going around, my darling husband Steve came up with a great idea which is a little different than the normal "meme". He's an idea man! Why not pass a "Proud To Be...." along? So I'm going to start this with six, cuz it's a good number and pass it on to three.

1) Proud to be the wife to a great man!

2) Proud to be a Mother. Hopefully a good Mother.

3) Proud to be a home for so many creatures, the girls, the goats, the puppies, the kitties, and all else who dwell within this home.

4) Proud of my profession and the knowledge I've gained with my years of experience.

5) Proud to be care enough about the world I leave behind for our future, our children.

6) And yes, inspite of the political and economic unrest we all have endured. Proud to be an American.

And my husband giggled at me when he came up to see this post and asked, "Why didn't you create an award?" And I responded, "Well, I did think about it and it's so much work to fight with Photoshop." So he said that I'm proud to be an instant gratificcationist.

So now I'll get on to who I'll pass this on to. And sorry Mrs Mom , but Steve and I both thought of you first, so you get kicked again!

Next, My fine French friend over at Portraits De Chevaux , cuz I'd like to see this go around the world.

And finally from across the pond, not too far from France but in England, one of my favorites places in the world to visit, White Horse Pilgrim .

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-35712022733067935572008-07-21T11:40:00.000-07:002008-07-21T13:55:25.607-07:00Six Things........Hmmmm.....

I've done this before.... A few times, but I'm willing to think of a few more things to add. Victoria over at Teachings Of The Horse , tagged me for a game of meme. Six things that you may not know about me. So here it goes.

1) I am a Pediatric Critical Care Registered Nurse. I've been a Pediatric nurse for 17 years. Most new people I train at work are scared of me at first, so I've been told and then they find out that I'm really a pussycat! Not mean, but anal and set in my ways and a good teacher.

2) I am a Mother of one, Step-Mum of two and equally love all three young adult children we have and I hate using the term step-mom and only use it for purposes of explanation.

3) I should have been a farmer. I love the country life and our critters.

4) This is a second marriage for both Steve and I. We've been together for 8 years now and I believe we are soul mates! Truly! He is very patient. :)

5) I'm a believer in earth religions and love to visit ancient places. One of my favorite places in the world is Stone Henge. I've been there three times. I also love New Orleans and not for Bourbon Street, but for history and Voodoo.

6) I was a very naughty teenager and was done with my partying by the time I was 21 (legal). I do not drink now.

So now I'll pick only three victims for this game.

First I will infringe upon my good friend Mrs Mom's "Golden Hermit Status" over at Oh Horse Feathers and ask that she give us six things.

My good clean fun lovin' friend over at Blackjack Land And Cattle Company . This girl has the best lifestyle I think I've ever seen.

And last, but certainly not least, The ever so sweet and knowledgeable Arlene at Grey Horse Matters .

Please play along Ladies and then pass it on to at least three more!
Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-53718093973321218402008-07-20T07:06:00.000-07:002008-07-20T07:17:06.538-07:00Just a Reminder

Here's poor Spider last winter. I was pretty hot this morning while I was feeding, we have such high humidity here. Gerald found this picture in my pile of pictures yesterday. When I look at this I don't mind the heat so much. We have gotten about 3 inches of rain in the last 2 days. How much snow would that be? I decided it's time to sell the Camaro and find something with front wheel drive. She is three years old and was found as a stray. We saw lots of puppies and decided that she needed us most. Of course Zoe and I rushed home to gather up Stephen and Spot as they suggested she meet them as well and of course, only after the meeting did she cough with suspected Kennel Cough and get diagnosed after Spot was exposed, but we decided to take her home with the proper meds and tomorrow Stephen will have to go to our vet and pick up antibiotics and vaccinations for me to give our other dogs. She is an Aussie Cattle Dog mix??????? She is very sweet and loving and Spot is dying to play, but we'll keep her quarantined to Zoe's room until we get this cough under control and the others vaccinated. She let a huge bark at the sight of the horses and goats and they equally looked at her like "What the hell is that?" But on second take, although the horses and goats were still curious, she didn't care. Good! So now we have to set everything up in Zoe's room. She is very cuddly and loving so far. She only weighs about 35 pounds, which is nice because once Zoe heads back to University, she'll be bunking with us. The plan was not to come home with a dog today, but to look at puppies all weekend and then make a decision, but she really tugged on all heart strings and puppies always get adopted, yet adults don't always. She and Spot are nearly the same age, so it will be a nice match. The old man is used to new critters coming home. Fido knows his place is special and he is the boss until his dying day.

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-89736029915953250052008-07-17T06:43:00.000-07:002008-07-17T06:49:04.663-07:00Another Hot Day

It's going to be a scorcher today, up into the 90's and very humid. I really don't like it this hot! Zoe and I are going to look at puppies today. We've decided to add a new family member. The humane society this morning and an appointment this afternoon to look at some Lab/ Retriever Mix puppies. Sunday we will look at some Aussie shepherds. It's going to be hard as I easily fall in love with puppies and stray dogs. I'm going to try and hold out for an Aussie, but you never know. We won't purchase today, just look and plan to bring whoever home next week. I'll first start by saying I moved here to this house on Bowers Road in Spring of 1995. It was fairly warm and we had rented a moving van and enlisted my in laws at the time to help with the move. A very long day and at the end of it, Kathy and I went back to the apartment in Lake Geneva to clean up. We had brought three of Kathy's girls with us. They were little, Meghan 8yrs, Ashley 6yrs, and I think we had Carly, who must have been around 3yrs old. My car was a 1989 Cougar with bucket seats and two doors. We were returning from the apartment, must had been around 7 or 8pm as it was dark but not pitch black. I was hauling down Bowers Road only about 3 or 4 miles from the new house, when a huge black dog like creature flew up and out of the ditch at the passenger side of the car and hit it with a mighty force! We all saw teeth! Kathy screamed, the girls screamed and Kathy actually flung herself over the center council and nearly into my lap! My response was, "What the hell was that?!". The shear force of it caused me to swerve. We looked behind us as I slowed down and it was gone! We then began to laugh and make comments about how silly we had been and "Cripes! That was some dog!". The next day, I inspected my car to find claw scratches on the door and rear quarter panel. We told the men and they as often men do blew us off until they saw the scratches and then the questions, "Are you sure you didn't hit a deer?" Well, I don't know of any deer that have claws. Anyway, it wasn't until about a month later that I learned of what it might have been, funny enough. I was just meeting some of the Moms in the Elkhorn School District as Zoe was now at the Kindergarten. One of them had said, "Oh, you live on Bowers Road?" "Near Bray Road?". "Yes" I answered. "You live near the Bray Road Werewolf." she said. I said, "The what?" And she indulged me with the stories of the sightings of this thing. I decided to do a little sleuthing myself and headed to the Elkhorn Library and sure enough I found an entire file with local and not so local newspaper clippings and interviews with people who had encountered the thing. There were so many sightings of the creature and encounters on both Bray and Bowers Roads that often there were Werewolf parties at the Elkhorn taverns in the early '90's. In fact the sightings are all over southeast Wisconsin to this day. Most recent last November. It was all over the news. I'm not sure what to believe, however, I know that whatever I encountered attacked my car and it was quick and fast. Wisconsin is rich with Native American history and tribes. Some speculate that it is a Native American shape shifter. Have any of you ever heard of the Bray Road Werewolf ? It was featured on TV. This is one of the many links over the Internet about it........Bray Road Werewolf .

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-24687737221135813702008-07-14T11:16:00.000-07:002008-07-14T11:42:45.667-07:00I Love Summer.........

But I feel like it's already winding down and I find that depressing. I like warm summer days with low dew points and this week is going to get hotter and stickier. Steve and Zoe have gone to the mall today in search of some Apple software for Zoe and probably out to lunch. I opted out of going as I have some house work and just didn't feel like it. I thought I lost Stephen's dog, Fido, just awhile ago when I went out to let the girls out in the pasture. He usually wanders about the yard and then waits by the door. A half an hour passed and I went to check on him and he was no where to be found, so I went out to the road, God forbid, and I kept calling the deaf old fart and finally there he was next to the garage. Whew! Stephen would never have forgiven me! I think he was resting in the garage in the shade and didn't hear me calling him. Today, later when the sun starts to recede, I'll go out and clean water troughs. It's just too hot today. On a different note, Steve and I purchased a new bed! It is marvelous! We bought a Simmons Beauty Rest Black, model Gabriella! We love it as our old mattress was 14 years old and shot to hell! It was expensive, but well worth it! And that was the first one we tried and nothing after that compared! I'm spoiled as well because I believe in a high thread count sheet. I can feel the difference. Love the new bed! This week I think I'll work on the empty fish tank and start to get it set up. Tired of looking at it, but it will be a big project as it too is 55 gallons. Steve's saltwater tank is doing fine, but we lost the starfish recently. This tank is getting a whole new look. I used to keep an Oscar, but I think this time I'll replace the rocks with red rocks and a new background and pop in some different types of Silver colored freshwater fish. And as payday approaches with bonus in hand may even get a small tank to put gel injected neons in. I'm sure I'll post pics. Now I'll think of a good horsey post to make us all think a bit!

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-91763732454536260642008-07-14T08:24:00.000-07:002008-07-14T08:37:06.472-07:00What Music Does Everyone Listen To?
I'm curious as to what everyone listens to. My girls have a large loafing shed and it is connected to the electric fence so there is electric to it. I have a radio propped up in the rafters and the girls a serenaded to the sounds of popular country. Of course at Christmas, that station sometimes gets changed to the Christmas music station and once in a while I'll put on the classic rock station. But I soon tire of that and back on goes the country. I'm probably the only one in the world that drives an X-type with country music blaring out of it as well. So I'll have to say that my country music is first and foremost. And I've managed to turn on a number of British kids (young men and women) to the tunes of good old American Country as well. So there's a small group of British in the south of England, oh near Portsmouth that listen to country music crooners. Well, at least popular country music. So what does everyone else out there listen to??????
Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-73173354941691955822008-07-10T13:20:00.000-07:002008-07-10T13:26:16.119-07:00The Dreaded Mosquito!
I for one am glad I had the girls vaccinated for West Nile virus! Since we've had the record spring rainfall, there has been standing water in the neighboring farm fields. The mosquitoes are just vicious! Once they discover you out there, it's as if they tell the entire swarm and then you're under attack! I don't think I've ever seen so many! How about all of you? Are you dealing with numerous mosquitoes? But I managed to get this one of poor quality from the living room window at about 11pm last night. The girls were huddled together and not in their shelter. The puppies were panting and drooling over our heads in bed most of the night which made it difficult to sleep. Little Lilliput cat will hide in the bathroom under the old claw foot tub. Often you see people, who may have good intentions in the beginning and then just end up collecting and often those horses end up in a place that may be worse than where they came from. The living conditions for the horses are poor. There are too many there to care for properly. They are not rehabbed for adoption. They are standing in crap and underweight, wormy, whatever. Those are the places that give horse rescue a bad name. People are able to get that 501 tax exempt status and really put forth the effort to really rescue. I'm sure for every bad one out there, there must be ten good ones. Well, I would hope so anyway. We all know that this will get worse before it gets better. A legitimate rescue will have a reasonable adoption fee, not a sales price. In my opinion, that adoption fee should be 3 digits, not 4. The horse up for adoption should have been evaluated by a Veterinarian and also an expert horse person, perhaps a trainer to determine soundness of mind and body and any illness or issues that might make the horse a pasture pal rather than ridable. Any health issues should be revealed to the prospective adopter. The adopter should be scrutinized. There should be a contract between adopter and rescue. I like to see a statement that allows the horse to be returned to the rescue if things do not work out in their new home. A former stallion, should be a former stallion, gelded. In Wisconsin, there are two rescues I like. One is ASAP and the other is the Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation . There are others, but these are the two I have found here that seem most legitimate.

Now onto some disturbing news today. Stephen just sent me this article Feds considering euthanizing..... . Now this is truly upsetting. I find this news sad and I don't even know what to think about it. I'll have to think further about this before expressing an opinion.
Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-10673331610992661972008-07-01T07:35:00.001-07:002008-07-01T07:42:08.513-07:00Nature Is Amazing<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_uhuXENwJy5c/SGpA7J1-u9I/AAAAAAAAAWs/_cJYUj1p4-4/s200/catbird.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5218054503260928978" /> Sometimes I marvel at nature and how diverse and fantastic it is.

We came home from Washington DC and every time we walked past a tree we could hear a cat ( I swear it was a cat honest ) and each time Callie and I looked in the tree all we could see was a bird.

Anyway after a while of thinking we are getting older and more senile Callie gets out our birdbook and lo and behold the answer to our confusion ( the bird was a Cat Bird ) did not even know they existed.

The thing I find amazing is they must have developed this bird sound that sounds like a cat to keep cats away because they seem to nest fairly low on the tree branches.

Now we have a Cat Bird, A few Cow Birds and I want to see a horse bird can you just imagine what it will be like hehehe

steve
Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
The People Historyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01441825212351898692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-87655876382364817192008-06-30T05:39:00.000-07:002008-06-30T06:37:09.852-07:00Washington DCThese are just a quick sampling of some of the things we saw at Washington DC. I have tons of pictures. We did enjoy ourselves. We walked miles! My front of my calves were on fire! It wasn't overwhelmingly hot as the dew point dropped when we were there. It is one of the strangest cities I've ever been to and I used to live in Chicago and Phoenix. I've been to London and New Orleans several times. And by strange I mean, street people and panhandlers. At least 4 per block! And crime! God forbid you might reach for a camera during a motorcade. The Secret Service hang out their windows with rifles. Must have been someone real important. Sunday night we got in fairly late as our flight was delayed by two hours, so we just wandered down to the White House and Washington Monument quickly. Monday we walked down to the National Mall where the Smithsonian Museums are. Managed the Air and Space, Native American and Natural History Museums. Tuesday, another walk to the Mall and an Art Museum, National Archives and Ronald Reagan Convention Center and Tuesday evening a twilight bus tour of the city and stops at the Memorials (Jefferson, WW2, FDR, Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean & Irwogima Memorials). Wednesday, a day at the Holocaust Museum and dinner at the Old Ebbit Grill and home Thursday. A good trip and manged to see a lot. I was disappointed in the two mile long National Park that runs from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial as the grass and sidewalks were bad and grubby. Kind of embarrassing. The American History Museum was closed for remodeling and that was really disappointing. We satyed at the Hilton Garden Inn just two blocks from the White House. It's dangerous in the late evening around there for all the thugs. What I found interesting was there are no skyscrapers as by law, no building can exceed 130 feet in height. Every important building is surrounded by huge cement planters as protection against terrorism since 911. Zoe thought people there in general were not very friendly. I didn't notice that. Some tourist's are incredibly rude. Using flash photography when they are not allowed in the Archives really pissed me off. I thought the Security Police at the Archives were incredibly nice and patient with all of the people. General traffic is blocked from entering about a 2 block radius around the White House, however you can walk around there. All and all, glad I went just once, to I've been.

The Jefferson Memorial.

The Lincoln Memorial.

The closest thing I could find to a horse.

The Spirit of St. Louis.

The White House.

Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
Calliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05704537697611988375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8926013554523279624.post-6441885475489167062008-06-27T15:04:00.001-07:002008-06-30T14:04:36.128-07:00St Jude's Horse Show

This weekend they are having a horse show at the Pecatonica Equine Center to benefit St Judes. On Saturday it is just for the kids. They have speed and fun classes. Sunday it is time for the adults. It is basically the same classes. We don't even have horses we can take to this. Most of the participants belong to a local trail club. They probably would prefer that we leave our stallions home. A friend from work has been making these necklaces for me and my friends. No 2 are alike and they really look nice wether you are showing or just having fun. She makes them with sterling silver so that they will hold up. She has donated the purple amethyst one to the silent auction that they hold at the horse show. I have to stop looking at them because I'll end up with another one. I have to match my show clothes!
