Leadership Development Camp 2009

SLSGB is holding its 2nd Leadership Development Camp 2009 will be held at the stunning location of Battisborough Cross House, in the South Hams from Friday 19th June pm to Monday 22nd June pm 2009. If your 18 or over its open to you (I have checked with SLSGB and they said 17's aren't able to go...sorry!).

It's all expenses paid, (food/accommadation/and I think travel)....

Out of the 20 people attending....1 will be lucky enough to be sent to Australia for their week long camp!!

If you have any questions about it, please ask me... I did it last year and it was fantastic....

RNLI come to Teignmouth

BEACH safety in Dawlish and Teignmouth will be officially handed to RNLI lifeguards this week.
The
handing over will pave the way for 25 highly trained lifeguards
providing vital safety patrols on Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren beaches
from May 25.
Two
RNLI lifeguards will patrol each beach from 10am until 6pm during the
Whitsun school holiday and on weekends until the peak summer season
which runs from Saturday, July 4 until Sunday, September 6 when they
will provide a service seven days a week.
Cllr
David Corney-Walker, Teignbridge Council spokesman for economic
development and tourism, said: "With the holiday season fast
approaching we're delighted to be launching this new and improved
lifeguard service with the RNLI.
"The
service will be a real benefit for visitors to Teignbridge's
award-winning resorts, bringing with it improved equipment and training
at no extra cost.
"We've been working
together with RNLI to achieve this service for more than 18 months, so
to see the launch date set for May is most welcome."
RNLI
deputy divisional lifeguard manager for Dorset and East Devon, Mike
Grocott said: "The new RNLI lifeguard service on Teignmouth and Dawlish
Warren will work alongside the local RNLI lifeboat and volunteer crew
at Teignmouth to help provide a joined up lifesaving service from the
beach to the open sea.
"It
will improve what are already well facilitated beaches in a stunning
area of Devon. We are delighted to be working with the council to
provide this level of safety cover for both locals and visitors."
The
RNLI launched its Life First campaign last year, which highlights the
charity's change from a lifeboat service to a lifeboat and lifeguard
service.

Many members of the TBSLSC will be working this year as lifeguards with the RNLI and will be taking part in a demonstration this week.

With the RNLI coming to Teignmouth, TBSLSC is looking forward to working with the RNLI in the future.

Change of Sunday Training from Jan 09

From the first Sunday in January 2009 Sunday Training is moving 30 minutes eariler to a 9:30am start.

This is because we are doing some early morning Pool Training at Dawlish Pool from about 7:15am to about 8:20am which means people are hanging around so long between sessions.

No Fitness Training for the next 2 weeks

Winter Training at Dawlish Pool?

Is Anyone Interested in Swimming at Dawlish Pool on a Sunday Morning from 7:30am to 8:30am?

It will cost between £1 and £2 a session (paid in advanced)

We will practice not just swimming but also lifesaving techniques.

We know it’s early but it is the only time available at the pool.

Christmas Party

We are holding a Christmas Dinner on Saturday 13th at the Cliffden Hotel, Exeter Road, Teignmouth starting at 7pm. It is priced at £16 each (payable on the night). Family members are welcome.

A Sign up sheet is located on the notice board at the club house where you can choose your menu as this is pre-selected before the dinner.

Intensive Beach Lifeguard Course in October

The RNLI will run a series of intensive beach lifeguard courses at various locations throughout Cornwall, Devon and Dorset during the October half term, providing participants with the opportunity to gain the essential lifeguard qualifications needed to apply to work as an RNLI lifeguard.

Interested parties are invited to attend a weeklong course to achieve an internationally accredited Beach Lifeguard Qualification, an essential requirement for anyone applying for a position as an RNLI lifeguard. Courses will run from 27 October to 2 November, and combine practical and theory sessions to cover beach safety operating procedures, hazard awareness, accident prevention, first aid including CPR, and pool and open water rescue skills including sea rescues using equipment such as rescue tubes and rescue boards.

Steve Instance, RNLI Lifeguard Inspector says:

'The RNLI are pleased to be working with Surf Life Saving GB to offer these courses at the local Surf Life Saving Clubs. By giving people the opportunity to gain their beach lifeguard qualifications now, it means they can apply to become a RNLI lifeguard as soon as the online applications open for 2009 season in December. The water is still warm in October, which makes the course far more enjoyable than it would be in the spring.'

Places on the courses will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Potential applicants must demonstrate a high level of fitness and be able to swim 400m in under 7 and half minutes. They must have their own wetsuit.

The course will cost £50. This covers membership of the SLSGB along with the cost of the training manual and examination fees.

Courses will be offered in the following areas, but the exact locations may change depending on the number of applicants and weather conditions:

and also at the following clubs:
Bantham
Helston
Hayle
St Agnes
Newquay
Wadebridge
Bude
Woolacombe
Poole Bay

This is a great way for all the members to keep in contact with each other and be aware of all events happening. Plus have some fun with photo's, the wall and a discussion forum.

End of Season Camping Weekend

Once again we will be going down to Polzeath on the weekend of 19th/20th/21st of September 2008. It is £8 a night for the camping.
Any Junior under the age of 16 will need a Parent or Guardian present.
This is a casual weekend and no responsibility on the club or its members.

Paramedic Training Mon 15th Sept

Open Evening 2nd July

This past Wednesday TBSLSC put on an open evening to attract new members to the club, with members of the RNLI (and their jet ski!) and SLSGB on hand for support. With demonstrations using the boards, tubes and IRB. The evening was a success with us attracting both new seniors and juniors.

A big thank you to all the people involved in the evening. And if you missed the open evening, but would still like to join, feel free to pop down for one of our training sessions.

New Club House Artwork

Today, Shane Haarer spray painted a mural on our window board to improve the exterior of the club house and to help promote the club. So a big thank goes out to Shane Haarer who painted the mural... And doing it just in time for our open evening on the 2nd of July.

We are having an open evening on Wednesday 2nd July at 6:30pm at our club house which is located on the seafront near the Lido and East Cliff Cafe.

We are looking for new members over the age of 16...So come along...

Summer Training Changes

Sunday Training has now been moved to Monday evenings at 6:30pm at the club house.
Wednesday Night Training will now just be for seniors only.

The reason for the change is because all the qualified lifeguards are working on the beaches so aren't available on Sundays for training. Sunday Training will resume in the Autumn.

We have the opportunity to take part in this years Rotary Raffle.This is our major fundraising event for the year and we have thousands of tickets to sell....

At a pound a Ticket, we could raise thousands for the club as every ticket sold, is a pound for us!

Tickets are available for Club Members from Roger at East Cliff Cafe.
The General Public can also purchase them at East Cliff Cafe, The Sea Front Teignmouth.

And to help inspire club members to sell as many tickets as possible, East Cliff Cafe will award the person who sells the most with a Cash Reward.

Sell them to your Friends, Family, Workmates, Teachers, etc...
Get your family involved to....Get your parents to sell tickets at their work...

We will be also running events throughout the summer to increase ticket sales.

Tim & Coombeshead College raise 400 Pound for TBSLSC

Thanks to Teignmouth Post (Friday 4th April 2008)

Teignmouth Beach Surf Life Saving Club is benefiting from nearly 400 Pound donated by Coombeshead College, Newton Abbot. The 389 Pound was raised by pupils at its last non-school uniform day.

The school decided to give the money to the Teignmouth Club, after realising that pupil Tim Smart, 14, is a lifesaver for the organisation. He was only eight when he joined.

Tim is pictured (right) with headteacher Richard Haigh and College Councillors Rosey Ray and Josh Castree.

Lots of Updates

The past few weeks have been very busy for TBSLSC with a number of events happening.

First off South West Water gave us £365 which has paid for a new Prop Guard for the Rescue Boat and a new pair of binoculars.

There have been two non-uniform days held by Trinity School (Kim) and Combeshead School (Tim).

We have purchased a new Racing Ski and Board.

Teignbridge Council had wanted to close during the winter the East Cliff Jubilee toilets next to the club house, but due to a petition with over 1400 signatures, the decision to close the toilets was reversed and will stay open all year.

A new kitchen has been installed in the club house.

There is also a Committee Meeting to be held in the club house on Tuesday 11th March 2008 at 7:30pm.

And earlier today there was an incident with a jet ski which needed our rescue boat to help out as the owner fell off while on the Jet Ski and because he was a free rider and didn't have a pull cord on, the Jet Ski continued on without him.

MemberShip Due for Renewal

Following the TBSLSC's AGM, this years membership is due for everybody.

The new membership fee for 2008 for both Juniors and Seniors is £40.

Only 2 Visits will be allowed without a membership, after that you will not be able to use the equipment or take part in training.

Please see Julian Smart for a membership form with your payment either in cash or by cheque. There is also 10% discount for members from the same family.
