Some of the issues you'll have to contend with include: inaccessible publications, frequent changes in government departments responsible for gaming, and report content that can be difficult to decipher.

Having said all that, anyone requiring “historical” annual reports from Alberta related to gambling will definitely want to review my Alberta - Historical Annual Reports web page . It includes a listing of reports that are available in PDF format that have been digitized (with the permission of the publishers) by the Institute Library.

For the reports that don’t have PDF links at present, I’m investigating the possibility of including these in the future. The one exception is the "Open Access" article entitled "Risk Factors for Problematic Gambling: A Critical Literature Review" by Johansson et al.

According to Johansson and colleagues:

"The aim of the present study was to identify the existing empirical studies regarding the risk factors for the development and maintenance of pathological gambling. Many categories (22) are considered to constitute probable risk factors (1–2 supporting studies)." (p.89).

If you're wondering about why Springer, the journal publisher, allowed only this particular article to be made available for free, you should read the web page How Springer Open Choice Works.

Rhyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17966857766208666227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8876187.post-3533368578558718412009-02-27T10:59:00.000-08:002009-02-27T11:08:22.936-08:00Reports from the Queensland Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR)The Queensland, Australia Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR) makes available a number of research-related reports on its Resposible Gambling page. The aim of the site is to establish a "home" for privately-funded datasets collected by multidisciplinary addiction researchers working throughout the world.

Many of the available datasets relate to Internet gambling and were obtained from European online gambling provider bwin Interactive Entertainment AG. Access to such data will be a real boon to researchers investigating Internet gambling as this type of information has previsouly been largely inaccessible. This data is already proving to be fertile ground for researchers as evident by the publications by dataset page.

NOTE: Datasets in the repository are accessible to"registered users." You register to be a user of the Transparency Project by emailing info@thetransparencyproject.org and providing basic information. Once you're successfully registered and have received a password, you can access and download the requested database. It is anticipated that the website will have an automated registration process in the future.

Rhyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17966857766208666227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8876187.post-47204262287780454012007-05-03T09:58:00.000-07:002007-05-03T10:06:01.652-07:00Motivational Interviewing & Problem Gambling [Training Workshop]If you're interested in an intensive evidence-based and hands-on training workshop on "Motivational Interviewing & Problem Gambling" aimed at healthcare and social service professionals, be sure to sign-up and attend the September 7, 2007 event which will take place at the University of Toronto (St. George Campus) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

It is being organized by Professional Advanced Services (PAS).

Rhyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17966857766208666227noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8876187.post-9312447166324158052007-03-09T07:23:00.000-08:002007-03-09T07:27:40.636-08:00International Gambling Studies [new issue]
Volume 7, Issue 1 (2007) of the journal International Gambling Studies contains the following original articles:

Between Law and Custom - Much of the credit for this change is said to have been as a result of the introduction of casino gambling. Based on what economists like Dr. Bill Eadington have written, it would seem that Tunica meets the criteria for places that would be likely to benefit from casino development (i.e., few existing industries, choice of "destination-style" facilities to attract tourists, and residents who are generally willing to accept both the positive and negative effects of casino gambling).

Rhyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17966857766208666227noreply@blogger.com0
