Proper home-care products are a critical part of both achieving and maintaining the maximum results from any treatment you receive. Simply put, you are protecting your investment. And keep in mind, what you do away from me affects what happens when you are with me.

I expect my clients to experiment with other skincare brands, but please remember – the person behind the department store counter was hired because they can sell, NOT because they know anything about your skin. I mean really, are you going to trust your skin to part-time Christmas help?

Scosh Skincare’s therapeutic levels of ingredients, antioxidants and vitamins have been formulated specifically for post-treatment use, with many options for different skin needs. In fact I was extolling the virtues of ingredients such as resveratrol, peptides, ceramides, and antioxidants 10 years ago, long before they became the 'hot topics' they are today. I stay current with new formulas and ingredients by delving into research, asking questions, attending trade shows, trying new products, and interviewing new labs constantly.

My goal in the treatment room has always been to provide the most cost effective and time efficient options. I positioned my business model years ago to give clients ‘more bang for their buck’ by tailoring each treatment to my client's specific skin care needs. I don’t give shoulder massages, I don’t turn on the steam and then walk out of the treatment room. What I do is fix your skin. Period. It's all about personalizing the process, because just like skincare, not every treatment is for everyone. That said, designing an appropriate skincare protocol to follow post-treatment is also critical.

I do believe that I have an outstanding array of extremely effective Scosh products available for post-treatment care. I'm always happy to do a skincare consultation anytime to help you find a great routine to maximize the results of your treatment. So, let’s get together and review your skincare protocol for a new, more healthy looking you.

Next month I’m going to address basic skin care protocols for different skin types. Until then – wash your face twice a day and sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen (YES, even in winter!)

Pumpkin - is it a Peel or what?

There seems to be some confusion regarding all the autumn-inspired pumpkin peels out there, so I thought I’d try to clear up any confusion.

I love using pumpkin as a facial treatment. Pumpkin enzymes act like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s), without the drying effects of an AHA glycolic peel, for instance. In other words, you get great cell turnover, accelerated exfoliation, and powerful nutrients and antioxidants to scavenge those pesky free-radicals – resulting in smoother, younger looking skin.

A “gentle exfoliation” is one that will usually not result in a visible sloughing of dead skin. However, results can be achieved from a physical exfoliant such as a light microdermabrasion, a scrub, or a chemical exfoliant - usually 5% AHA or less. These will diminish fine lines, but the results will not last as long as a medium to deep peel.

A “peel” would be a medium to deep exfoliation and will usually result in a visible sloughing of dead skin cells. Depending on skin type, the exfoliation process can be a light flaking of the skin, or a deeper “sheeting” of the skin, where large patches of dead cells will be shed. Peels can be performed through physical exfoliation (microdermabrasion) or chemical peels (higher concentrations of AHA 10%+, BHA, TCAs, Jessners, etc.), or a combination of the two.

We all react differently to products; what may be a light exfoliation to you could be a “peel” on someone else. In addition, if you do not peel or sheet it doesn’t mean something isn’t happening at the cellular level, where it counts.

Price isn’t necessarily your barometer either. Scosh Studio currently offers a 30 minute - 10% Pumpkin Peel for $35, Pumpkin Peel.

So, delight your senses and enjoy the bounty of this time of year!

Eclectic Beauty for Fall '09

PULSE BEAUTY '09

FACE: Apply Scosh Liquid Mineral Powder Foundation or Scosh Pressed Mineral Powder in appropriate shade to skin with Foundation Brush, sponge or Kabuki Brush.

EYES: Sweep Scosh Lingerie shadow all over the eye, from lashes to the brow. Your weight divided by 2 is the minimum number of oz. of water needed per day! Conversion chart; 8 oz./cup, 16 oz./pint, 32 oz./quart, 128 oz./gallon. Drink up!

Alleviate perspiration along hairline by using an Antiperspirant Gel. Apply to your fingers first and then apply to the face along hairline. Remember, with any new mask or treatment, test the product on a tiny area of skin first (try it behind the ear) to make sure it won't cause irritation.

Soak in diluted vinegar for minor sunburn pain. Pour 2-3 cups of white vinegar into a bathtub of tepid water and soak. It's very soothing. PLUS a bath is much more comfortable than a pounding shower stream on the skin. Rinse in cool water to delete vinegar smell. TIP - put a 50/50 water/vinegar solution in a spray bottle and keep in the refrigerator for a cooling mist of relief!

Aloe gel is available in a spray can now! Aloe is soothing, healing and keeps skin hydrated. TIP- keep gel or spray in frig for additional cooling comfort.

Flip-flop Dry Feet. Exfoliate first concentrating on the heels with Scosh Microderm Crème Scrub, or Scosh Cleanse mixed with a dime size of baking soda. Then apply olive oil, Vaseline or Aquaphor followed by white cotton socks or peds overnight for smooth, soft tootsies in the morning!

Don’t be too clean! OK, I know this sounds weird but, bar soap can be very drying. If you’re sunburned, stay away from highly fragrant bubble baths, soaps, colognes and perfumes - they may be too irritating to your already parched skin. And don't scrub too hard. Stick with mild gel formulas, like Scosh Cleanse.

Summer looks are soft and bold!

This season’s sheer sexy pastels and intense global brights are everywhere! Feminine yet powerful. The key to following this summer’s makeup trend is to remember that a little bit goes a long way. A good rule of thumb for all seasonal trends is to try one at a time by focusing on one feature at a time.

Sweep a sheer shadow over the lid, or line your eyes with a fabulous new liquid liner color; wing it, smudge it, glam it - liner is huge this season! If you’re going to go dramatic; gold and gilded is all the rage - think, golden goddess! Add a hint of fresh coral to the cheeks and you’re right on trend. Lipsticks are back so, polish off your new look with a pale, nude lip color.

I’ve add a few more tips, tricks and techniques to create and keep that summer-fun look. Enjoy!

Prep, treat, and prime!
In other words, flawless skin is always in so remember; cleanse, apply antioxidant serum, spf moisturizer, and foundation primer. Primers can take makeup from so-so to summer sensational! The right primer can help makeup stay all day, minimize skin flaws, reduce shine, and diminish the appearance of fine lines while refining skin texture.

Ready, set, glow!
Even out skin tone with a Mineral Tinted Moisturizer for a light, summer look with additional spf.
Flush with a Cream Blush, warmed by the fingers and blended into the apples of the cheeks.
Enhance soft, natural brows with Brow Powder instead of brow pencil for long-lasting power.
Define eyes with a sheer shadow over Scosh Shadow Magnet Primer to hold all day. If you are going to make a bold eye color choice, remember to balance the rest of the face by keeping it soft and neutral.
Pout and paint your lips with a nude Lipstick or barely-there Lip gloss. The super shiny look is oh-so last season! (Thank goodness, I always thought that people looked like they were drooling!)
- Have a lip color from last season that you just love? Mix it with a bit of lip balm for sheer texture and color.

It is summer and we are in Arizona so, if you know you’re going to get ‘dewy’, set your makeup with an Oil-blotting Powder. And if you’re a Bronzer kind of girl, try the new golden-glow bronzers, lightly applied to all the places the sun kisses - cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin.

Remember to put your Scosh Blotting Papers in your purse and you can boldly go…and have some summer fun!

To learn more makeup tricks and techniques, join me at Scosh Makeup & Skincare Studio for Scosh School Makeup Workshops, an extraordinary place for a girl’s day out! So, read and learn people, your lives depend on it…

Did You Know?
The Skin Cancer Awareness ribbon is black but can share the color orange.

Beachgoers and snow bunnies should know that sand and snow reflect sunlight and can double UV exposure. UV rays can also pass through water, so don't think you're safe if you're in the pool.

UV rays pass through windows. Check the left side/driving side of your face for hyperpigmentation or brown patches.

Tanning is a form of skin damage.

Bronzers and self-tanners do not protect you from the rays.

We receive up to 85% of our sun damage before we’re 18 years old.

We have fewer oil glands on the back of our hands, under our eyes, neck and décolleté, which is why we age there first. Apply sunscreen liberally!

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer is diagnosed every year in the US. More than prostate, breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries, and pancreas cancers combined.

Melanoma can appear suddenly as a new mole or it can develop slowly in or near an existing mole. Women often develop melanoma on the lower legs as well as on the torso, Melanomas in men are often found on the torso, or the head and neck area.

Outdoor rays are UVB burning, cancer rays - B for burning. Indoor ultra violet, fluorescent light rays, which travel deeper into the dermis are UVA aging, wrinkling rays - A for aging. All light rays do damage.

The A, B, C, D, and E’s of skin cancer detection -
Asymmetry: one-half is unlike the other half. Border: is irregular, scalloped, poorly defined or blurred. Color: multiple colors, not uniform, shades of tan, brown, black, sometimes white, red, or blue. Diameter: melanomas are usually greater than the size of a pencil eraser, though they can be smaller. Evolving: you have a mole or skin lesion is changing in size, shape, or color. Any new mole growth should be a concern.

The Vitamin D Dilemma…
Sunscreen can block vitamin D production.

Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin but a steroid hormone and is vital for all tissues in the body.

Some of the latest research shows that only 10 minutes of exposure to sunlight each day will be enough for Caucasians to reach the recommended level of Vitamin D. People with darker skin will need somewhat longer exposure times.

HOWEVER, and this is big - most dermatologists and cancer groups have argued strongly against this "solution," since all unprotected UV exposure contributes to cumulative skin damage, accelerating aging, and increasing our lifetime risk of skin cancer. Therefore, people, you need to balance the risks and benefits of sun exposure.

How Do We Protect Ourselves?
Cover-up! Find that inner Diva and get a great hat and a dahhling pair of sunglasses!

Use sunscreen lavishly, at least a shot glass full for the entire body every day! Apply a minimum spf 15 at least 20 minutes prior to going out.

Avoid or protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm, when the sun's rays are the strongest.

Avoid tanning beds. Period.

Don’t have a dermatologist? Find a board-certified Dr. in your area at www.aad.org

Organic Skincare

I’ve gotten a few questions about Organic Skincare lately so, I thought I would do some research.

Did you know that The US Food and Drug Administration, FDA, does not require testing or certification of any beauty products? (re: last month’s blog about Mascara ads) Therefore, companies have more freedom when choosing ingredients, and those ingredients are not necessarily good for you.

Some products labeled organic by the USDA are more organic than others are. The USDA has set up different categories of organic products; a product that is made with 95% or more organic ingredients receives a USDA organic symbol, while a product made with more than 70% organic ingredients will say on the label that it is “made with organic ingredients.”

However, how many of those organic products are in your moisturizer? Not all organic products are equal. Products that claim to be organic may still contain ingredients that could cause a breakout, especially if you suffer from allergies. Think botanicals. They may smell nice but if you have allergies, buyer beware!

So when you are looking at organic skincare ask yourself organic what, organic how much?

How do Scosh products fit into all of this? Scosh Skincare is the cutting edge of cosmeceutical skin care. The effectiveness of the ingredients used depends on whether they are chirally correct. ‘kī-rul’ is Greek for hands. Every molecule found in nature is chiral. This is the delivery system. Chiral molecules are identical mirror images of each other, meaning they have a "left" and a "right" chemical orientation, much like our hands - think gloves. The skin is comprised of millions of chiral receptors, which dictate instructions to the cells. Only through receptors can the body access nutrients, drugs, and locally applied products. Applying the wrong chiral twin to the skin results in either poor response, irritation, or no effectiveness at all. For a product to be optimally effective, it must be received by a specific receptor, therefore chirally correct.

The Scosh philosophy is all about rejuvenating, repairing, and refining stressed, over-processed, dehydrated and problematic skin. Scosh Skincare has been formulated to be free from preservatives, synthetic colors, fragrances, cruelty free, and packaged in recyclable packaging.

Plastic Lashes? Do they really think we believe that those false eyelashes are mascara? It’s beyond exaggeration!

Some of the pictures are completely ridiculous. Honestly, who really wants their lashes to look like those uber theatrical plastic lashes I use to make up witches for Halloween? Even eyelash extensions don’t look this silly.

I was told many years ago, that it’s a common industry practice for advertisers, as long as they use the item they are advertising somewhere on the body. One makeup artist said the foundation she used on a models face in a foundation shoot wasn’t what was being advertised, but came from her kit instead. The advertised foundation however, was dabbed behind the ear so they could say they used it or the model was wearing it.

I did read that one mass market manufacturer was taken to task for this tactic and now must place a disclaimer in their ads.

You know I love makeup and skincare as much as the next girl but don’t even get me started on 12 year olds advertising eye cream or the hair-color-in-a-box celebrities!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makeupandskincarepro.blogspot.com/2009/03/plastic-lashes-yikes.html' title='Plastic Lashes? Let’s make this short and sweet!

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is one of the relatively few topical agents whose effectiveness against wrinkles and fine lines is backed by a fair amount of reliable scientific evidence. Ascorbic Acid has been proven to be photo-protective; a formidable defense against solar-induced free radicals. It plays a potent role in diminishing the effects of free radical damage and in this role can be quite effective as a protectant from ultra violet light damage.

Vitamin C as an Antioxidant: Ultraviolet radiation can generate oxygen free radicals that cause aging of the skin. Vitamin C can act as a first defense, against some of these radicals.

Vitamin C and Collagen: Collagen is a key component of most tissues. Vitamin C works as an essential factor for the normal formation, maintenance and structural stability of collagen.

Topical Vitamin C has shown to protect the skin from UV damage caused by prolonged sun exposure by reducing the amount of free radical formation and/or sunburn cells. As a result Vitamin C plays an essential part in slowing down photoageing.

So, cleanse daily with your Vibran-C Cleanser, followed by Vibran-C Mist, C Serum 20%, Vibran-C Creme with Ceramides, and your Vibran-C Day Lotion spf 15. Perfect for hydrating my dry, sun damaged, peri-menopausal skin. This is not ‘your mother’s’ aggressive, 'under home-arrest', type peel. It is a kinder, gentler regeneration of new cells at a faster rate than what would normally occur as an adult.

First, she cleansed my skin, twice. Then prepped my skin with a lactic toner, asking if I felt any tingling on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being worst. I felt a slight sensation, maybe a 1 or 2. We waited for the toner to dry and then started with 1 layer of Ultra Peel I, again asking my sensation on a 1 to 10 scale; I felt about a 3. We waited 3 minutes and she applied another layer, same 1 to 10 scale question; I felt slightly more tingling - about a 4. Waiting 3 more minutes, we decided to go for one more layer; 1 to 10 scale came in at about a 5 and that was it. After 3 minutes, she finished the peel off with a layer of Ultra II – a retinol treatment booster, then applied sunscreen and I was finished. My face looked like I used a bronzer and felt slightly tingly and tight, although not uncomfortable. The entire process took about 20 minutes, we were finished by noon. When I left for home I made sure to let the heat out of my car before jumping in, heat can do damage to the skin as well.

This peel should be kept on for at least 5 hours to let the skin process before removing and applying a hydrating balm (only). OR you can leave it on over night. I removed it at 5 hours with Scosh Cleanse and tepid water, patted dry, and generously applied a balm - looked pretty greasy!

Day 2, Tuesday
My skin felt very tight the next morning and I looked a bit puffy. No flaking or peeling. I washed my face with Scosh Cleanse and tepid water at the sink, patted dry and generously applied a balm and sunscreen. Kept the shower spray off my face, carefully washing and rinsing my hair in a tepid shower. Do NOT put your face under the warm shower spray for 5 days post. If in fact, if you can avoid washing your hair on day 2 even better.

Had clients all day so I also applied Scosh Oil Blotting Powder to control shine.

About 5 pm Tuesday (30 hours post peel), I started to feel like I was beginning to peel/ flake around the peri-oral area. Apparently, it is normal for this part of the peel to ‘release’ first as we use our mouth and nose so much throughout the day.

I washed my face at the sink that evening with Scosh Cleanse, patted dry and noticed that I was beginning to ‘sheet’. Rather large pieces of skin were peeling from the mouth, nasal, and cheek areas. Tempting as it was I did NOT peel, tug, or pull at these areas. Hyperpigmentation may result, damaging the skin. So, I applied more balm which made my face look greasy but not ‘peely’.

Day 3, Wednesday
I was sheeting and flaking in the morning. Washed my face with Scosh Cleanse and tepid water at the sink, patted dry and noticed flakes of skin in the wash bowl. Hmmm, kinda weird but funny at the same time! Generously applied balm and sunscreen. Lots of flaking throughout the day.

Home office day, so no powder. Just balm and sunscreen.

Washed my face at the sink with Scosh Cleanse and tepid water in the evening, patted dry, applying a generous amount of balm to stay hydrated.

Day 4, Thursday
I was surprised at how much of the flaking/peeling was gone. Except for the flaking on my forehead, eyebrows, and along the hairline my skin looked clear, tight, and nice.

Did the usual Scosh Cleanse, tried a serum this morning but if felt a bit tingly so I backed off. If it feels tingly, your skin is telling you something. Applied generous amounts of balm and sunscreen.

Put some oil blotting powder on and met my friend Dawn later that afternoon. She was surprised at the clarity of my skin just 3 days post peel.

Day 5, Friday
Then this is where I got cocky, making a HUGE mistake. Pay attention here, as it’s a do as I say NOT as I do moment.

I jumped in the shower without Scosh Cleanse. I decided to use a sample gel cleanser with itty bitty scrubbies in it. I thought would be fairly benign and I really wanted to get the flaking around my hairline. Big Big BIG mistake! I got out of the shower and my face was bright red, and felt warm to the touch. Scared the living heck out of me. I was completely panic stricken calling Diane and my friend Tracy telling them what a bonehead move I had just made and what the heck happened to my skin?

I had clients that morning, so I put on lots of balm and sunscreen, and oil blotting powder and headed off to the studio still feeling warm and looking bright red.

Diane called and talked me down, telling me to look at the ingredient list. Sure enough, half way down the list there it was…Retinyl Palmitate – Retin A – Vitamin A. Under normal circumstances a great cell turnover ingredient, in this case TOO much TOO soon (Maybe I should have made myself fill out the Chemical Peel Consultation Form.). About 5 hours later my skin started to calm down and all turned out OK. My skin looks and feels great and I’m very happy with the results.

BUT this is the perfect example of why you must follow the take home instructions, and use the post-skin care kit + shea butter balm for at least 10 days, twice a day, everyday post peel. Scrubs are NOT allowed no matter how much the flaking makes you crazy. It can absolutely do damage by hyperpigmenting the skin. I know better and I still was non-compliant. Do not follow my example!

Day 6 – 13
Skin looks terrific, with the hairline flakes taking the longest to release. About day 9 I felt really dry and started to flake ever so slightly again on my cheeks and forehead. Kind of a second peel it seemed. Hydrate made it unnoticeable and it was gone by day 11 leaving my skin very soft yet firm.

Day 14
I did a fruit enzyme peel as my final 3 part peel program. My skin is glowing! I’m really happy with the results.

Basic Skincare Protocol

Easy Steps to Anti-aging Skin care

Morning:
First > Cleanse or Vibran C Cleansing Scrub
Second > apply Peptoxyl Radiance Serum over entire face
Third > gently apply Peptoxyl Eye Treatment around both eyes from the outside of the eyes inward toward the nose in circular motions. I haven't posted a blog in quite a while, and since it's that most wonderful time of year for pictures, I thought some Holiday application tips would be fun. This will be more of a what 'to do' and 'not do' to keep your pictures pretty.

Holiday or event makeup is all about enhancing and defining... NOT decorating.

The type of foundation you wear is very important for pictures. I love loose mineral powder foundation for everyday wear, but it's not your best choice for pictures. Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and mica all have shiny properties to them and will 'blow out' on camera. You know that look... your face is white while the rest of your body looks natural. So, choose a liquid mineral or pressed mineral foundation with a bit more matte finish. The new Mineral Photo Touch Foundation was designed and tested in High Def studio conditions so it's perfect for pictures and video, etc.

DO: if you're using liquid foundation, apply it before concealer - so you don't wipe the concealer away.

DO: if you're using a pressed powder foundation, apply it after concealer - as the powder sets the concealer.

DON'T: make raccoon eyes with your concealer, it will show on camera, apply only where needed.

DO: add a healthy glow to the cheeks with a light shimmer blush. Apply to the apples or pillows of the cheeks.

DO: your brows. This is a big tip for enhancing your face for pictures.

DO: wear shadow with shimmer, it is the holidays after all, but on the lid ONLY.

DON'T: put a shimer or frost under your brow on the brow bone area as this will also 'blow out' on camera and make your brows look large while making your eyes look small.
DO: wear lashes. Save money here and buy them at your local drug store. The most important part of the lash application is the glue - DUO glue only. It used to be called surgical glue, it's basically latex. Get Dark, it comes out of the tube grey but darkens as it dries.
DO: wear lipstick. I love lipstick in pictures, just don't go too dark or you'll be all mouth in your shots.

DON'T: wear too much gloss. Use a bit of restraint, too much gloss will make you look like you're drooling!
TIP: if you're going to do the smoky eye or use some glitter/shimmer shadow, I always advise you to do your eyes first, face last. See my Sultry Eyes blog for that particular look.

TIP: and last but not least, don't forget to exfoliate your skin. Your makeup will only look as good as the canvas!

DO: HAVE FUN!

Microdermabrasion + Peels - how much is too much?

I am such a HUGE believer in microdermabrasion that I’ve built nearly my entire facial practice around it. I find it to be an extremely effective treatment for the modest amount of time spent in the facial room without, in most cases, extended periods of downtime.

As prevalent as it is, it’s hard to believe that microdermabrasion has only been in the United States for 10 years. When I first got my machine 9+ years ago, I was one of a handful of aestheticians with their own machine. Machines were found in Doctor’s offices, and even then they were few and far between. Finding reference to microdermabrasion in a facial protocol was pretty much non existent leaving me to write my own. However, microdermabrasion is now so established that frequently it is the first step in a treatment protocol.

Microdermabrasion is a natural way to evenly and safely exfoliate the skin. It transforms the skin’s appearance leaving it radiant and silky smooth while helping to minimize fine lines, acne scarring, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation. Microdermabrasion utilizes corundum powder crystals, the industry standard for skin resurfacing, to finely resurface the superficial layers of the skin, reduce imperfections and restore the skin’s natural vitality. As an anti-aging treatment it improves fibroblast activity which in turn stimulates collagen growth, increasing cell renewal which slows as we age. Microdermabrasion is a progressive, non-aggressive procedure usually done in a series of 6 to 10 treatments every 10 to 14 days, followed by maintenance every 8 to 10 weeks.
Lately, the combination of microdermabrasion and chemicals peels is seen more often in aesthetic practices and physician offices. While I believe that this application has its place, I also caution clients regarding this practice for a few reasons;

First, over-processed skin is not healthy skin. Pairing chemical peels with microdermabrasion, a mechanical peel, can be a fairly aggressive procedure as they are both skin resurfacing methods. Used together, they can potentially cause serious damage as it may be more invasive. I have personally seen some great results while doing this procedure, but there are risks involved. Recovery time after a ‘double peel’ means more downtime and a longer more serious home care practice. Advanced training is essential in this field.

Second and more importantly, as the client you must be 100% compliant when filling out the client consultation form. Without a complete and honest understanding of what my client is using we may get a different, not altogether happy, end-result. Protocols must be strictly adhered to with any client on prescription topicals such as Retin A and Differin.

Post care is imperative with microdermabrasion. Since I am exfoliating the top layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum), hydration and sun protection are essential. Microdermabrasion improves the absorption and penetration of serums and moisturizers much more effectively. You truly get more bang for your buck with your facial products after a microderm treatment. Replenish your skin with professional post-resurfacing skincare products formulated with therapeutic levels of antioxidants, nourishing vitamins, and skin-calming and healing ingredients. Do your best to avoid direct sunlight and if you plan on being outdoors, make sure you wear an appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen and hat. Additionally, I encourage my clients to open their car door and let the heat out before climbing in as heat can also do damage.

Enjoy my package of 3 microdermabrasion treatments including the face, neck and décolleté for $150 at Scosh Makeup and Skincare Studio in Scottsdale; http://www.scoshskincare.com/ma.php

Free Radicals? We use them in daily conversations, but do we really understand what they mean?

The serious explanation of Free Radicals defines them as atoms or molecules in your body with an unpaired electron…making them highly unstable. Because electrons normally come in pairs, the free radicals collide with other molecules in an attempt to steal an electron, and may start a chain reaction, wreaking havoc on your DNA and cells and leading to all kinds of diseases.

The not so serious explanation is to think of them as an oxygen molecule gone wrong, a Free Radical Pac-Man (Ms. Pac-Man?) on the attack.

The more free radicals to which we are exposed, such as sun, smog, and cigarette smoke, the greater the chance free radicals can tinker with our bodies natural DNA makeup. When that occurs our body's organs, tissues, and cells are weakened. Some weakening is a natural part of the aging process; however, the introduction of more and more free radicals breaks down our body's natural ability to fight back the aging process and escalates it prematurely. And remember, the largest organ of the body is our skin!

Antioxidants on the other hand, are free radical scavengers, neutralizing them before they get a chance to do harm to your body. They get their name from their ability to inhibit oxidation.

There are lots of different substances we call antioxidants, including many vitamins and minerals. Of course, not all antioxidants are created equal, and some of the most powerful, polyphenol antioxidants, are found in great abundance in pomegranate juice, cranberries, and grapes. Red wine, chocolate, and green teas are wonderful alternative sources.

So, kick off those Jimmy Choo’s, indulge in a glass of red wine with a piece of dark chocolate and chase those free radicals away.

The antioxidant and vitamin-rich Scosh from the vine system has been designed to target premature aging, sun damage, problematic and over-processed skins with therapeutic levels of anti-oxidants, nourishing vitamins, skin-calming and healing ingredients. So you spent a bit more time on You Tube that you thought and you’re still in your pj’s and late for work? Never fear, here’s a few quick steps to put you in your car and on the way to making big bucks!

1. Cleanse and moisturize – don’t forget to prep your skin with a moisturizer and sunscreen before you apply your makeup. If you didn’t wash your makeup off from the night before, yuck! I’ve said it before, your makeup will only look as good as your skin.
2. Foundation and concealer - if you’re using a powdered foundation apply concealer first, if needed - under eyes, around nose, blemishes – then apply your powdered foundation to help set the concealer. BUT if you use a liquid or cream foundation apply concealer second so you don’t wipe it away when applying your foundation. Also, look for a cream to powder liquid foundation so you can skip a step here by not having to set your foundation with powder. And if you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t need foundation but could use a bit of concealer, apply and blend where needed. I’m a big believer in using a large brush to apply powder foundation and either a sponge or foundation brush for liquid/cream foundation. The less you have to wash your hands the more time you’ll save. Just make sure to wash your brushes often.
3. Blush – make a big smile and sweep a light rose blush over the apples of your cheeks.
4. Brows - fill in brows with a shadow or pencil just a shade or two lighter than your brow hair color. This is an optional step. If you’re running out of time or have thick colored brows or wear bangs, you can opt out here.
5. Shadow - a quick layer or wash of shadow on the lids is perfect for day wear. Try one of the new pastels for spring.
6. Liner – if you’re not a shadow wearer or just love liner take this time to line the top lash line with shadow or pencil.
7. Mascara – brush through the top lashes once or twice, for a fresh look.
8. Lips - lip gloss, lip shine, lipstick. One tip I have about lipstick is that some sort of pink looks good on almost everyone; think rose, or sheer pink, or warm pink or plum. Lip liner not necessary here.

Save a step, save some time!

And don't forget it's all about the tools. Scosh makeup brushes are the finest on the market. They're all the brushes that I use in my prokit and on set. It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s inexpensive. Cleansing is essential in maintaining beautiful, healthy skin. I get my fair share of clients on a Saturday morning with Friday night’s makeup on. And I know - we’re all busy, tired, stressed and overworked. But the damage caused by this practice is immediately identifiable; clogged pores, dull complexion, whiteheads, blackheads, premature aging, and acne.

Cleaning the skin is important as it will remove the dead cells from the surface. I prefer a gentle, water-soluble cleanser to avoid irritating the skin, not one that needs to be wiped away with a tissue or washcloth. Removing the dirt and grime from the day will give a beautiful glow to your skin. And face it, it feels so good when you crawl into bed right?

C’mon, 2 minutes at night, and you’re off to sleepy sleepy night night time.

Second - and you’ve heard this from me before, but the best defense against aging skin is a good offense…sunscreen. Changes we normally associate with aging are caused by a lifetime of exposure to the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight, which penetrates the skin and accelerates aging through the production of free radicals. Photoaged skin is wrinkled, hyperpigmented, and readily loses its tone and elasticity.

Beyond avoiding the sun and covering yourself head to toe in clothing, sunscreens and topical antioxidants are the best way to prevent photodamage. The American Cancer Society recommends the use of sunscreens, applied correctly, that have SPH 15 or higher for all day protection.

I should have called this article 3 simple steps for age-proofing your face because I am going to add one more tip - get a good nights sleep. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. Having the right amount of sleep can actually help the skin regenerate.

Lastly - please remember, what you do away from me effects what happens when you’re with me. So, if you’re not washing your face twice a day and not using sunscreen everyday, my reparative facial treatments can only go so far. It’s like spending big bucks to have a facial and then buying your skincare at a discount store.

We’re in this together ladies, so you do your part and I’ll happily beautify America one face at a time!!

Scosh Cleanse is the top selling cleanser in the Studio. This cleansing gel is safe for all skin types, doesn't strip the skin and smells great. http://www.scoshskincare.com/s_cleansersscrubs.php

Shaving - doesn’t have to be a pain in the neck!

Does the idea of shaving every morning make your neck turn red with irritation? Do you finish your shave with nicks, cuts and bumps? Do you chafe your sweeties face when you give her a smooch?

A really great shave has 3 important components: your hardware, your software and lots of moisture.

Let’s start with your shaving hardware; choices are the girly disposable razors, cartridge razors and the classic double-edge razor. Ok, there’s also the straight razor, and we do live in the west but c’mon!

Shaving aficionados love the superior double-edge razor blade for a much closer shave. Used in combination with a quality badger shaving brush and cream, you have all the necessary ingredients for a Wet Shave. However, if you decide to use a multi-blade cartridge razor please remember to change your cartridge frequently. A dull razor is definitely the culprit for razor burn. And don’t use your girlfriends or wife’s disposable razors for anything. Period.

Ideally, if you can, shave in the shower. Beard stubble will soften the longer you’re in that wet steamy environment.

Start with a really good shaving gel, cream or moisturizer. Stay away from alcohol based products which will not only make your face sting, but also dry your skin. Massage the cream or gel into your skin to soften stubble and help create a protective barrier that allows your razor to glide easily across your skin.

Shave downward with the grain or in the direction that your hair grows, using slow careful strokes. This usually means down your cheeks and face and up your neck. Going with the grain helps prevent razor rash. Rinse your blade often.

Many men suffer from shave bumps and ingrown hairs, which happen when particularly tough stubble is cut and grows back underneath the skin. Regular use of a face scrub with Jojoba beads helps remove dead skin cells while helping to free in ingrown hair.

And if you have really tough stubble you may have to shave twice; once in the direction of your growth, rinse, cream up again and then shave against the grain.

Once you’ve finished shaving, rinse and then pat your face with a clean towel. Finish with a moisturizer with UV protection all over your face and neck to keep your face moist and supple.

Store your blade to air dry. Leaving your blade in water will dull the blade and possibly breed bacteria.

So, go ahead have a great shave and give your sweetie a kiss!

My male clients LOVE to use Scosh Matte Hydrate Moisturizer as a shave cream;http://www.scoshskincare.com/s_moisturizers.php

Spring into Beauty - nature inspired makeup for Spring ‘08

Nature really shows in this season’s makeup color story. With names like hyacinth and luminous lilac, you can see how eye shadow colors mimic the florals we see in this spring’s fashions. You’ll find vivid mattes and polished pastels which can be worn alone or blended with a pearlized pigment for extra dimension. New exciting formulas help create a silky smooth finish.

The runway trend for brows is the “natural” look. Brow Tints create beautiful true to life shades for fool proof brows. I am normally a huge fan of brow powder or shadow to fill in brows, but these new brow tints are like hair color for brows! Super easy and natural.

For a fresh and flawless complexion try the soft, smooth texture of a pressed Mineral Foundation Powder. Sweep these micronized high-pigment minerals over your skin for a finish that’s pure perfection.

Apply pink blush over the apples of your cheeks. Just enough to give a hint of radiance. Modern, chic and oh so girlie!

On everybody’s lips – lipstick. Lips are more color saturated than ever before, appearing fuller, smoother, irresistibly luxurious. Never fear, saturation doesn’t necessarily mean dark or heavy, just color. But if it seems like a little too much color from the tube, dab it on your lips with your finger. Pencil not needed. Formula is significant these days as so many new lipsticks have vitamins, peptides and sunscreen in them. How great is it to get color and treatment all in one!

So, go out and explore the colors of spring – and don’t forget to smell the roses along the way.

For more info on Kathy Krakora and her Scosh products and Scosh Makeup and Skincare Studio, please visit, www.scoshskincare.com

Mineral Makeup Tips and Tricks

Mineral Makeup is everywhere, so I thought I’d get a jump on the summer with some great application techniques. Whether you use the loose mineral powder in a jar, liquid mineral foundation or the pressed powder compact, these tips and tricks will make you glow for all of your holiday parties!

FACE

Less is more when applying loose Mineral Foundation powder as the minerals are pure concentrated pigment. Start with a very light application, applying thin layers using downward strokes, until desired coverage has been achieved.

Powder applies smoothly on dry skin best, so moisturizer must be completely absorbed. If moisturizer has NOT completely absorbed: apply thin layer of Mineral Rice Powder first, UNDER Mineral Foundation. If you apply Mineral Foundation before moisturizer has been absorbed, you may get a streaky or blotchy appearance.

‘Too shiny’ appearance means that the minerals have been ‘overworked’. Minerals actually polish when you over apply or apply too much. To knock down the shine, apply a layer of Mineral Rice Powder on top.

Customize your Foundation shade by blending two colors together or simply by adding a little Mineral Rice Powder to your Mineral Foundation powder.

A tinted moisturizer is fun and easy to create by adding and blending a bit of loose Mineral Foundation powder to your favorite moisturizer in the palm of your hand. Apply as you would a moisturizer.

Use immediately post-treatment by layering Mineral Rice Powder on first as a base, to create a beautiful velvety canvas, then apply Mineral Foundation in thin layers.

A Bronze appearance can be achieved by using a fan brush to apply a darker shade of Mineral Foundation to your cheeks, nose, forehead, shoulders, collar bone, décolleté or anywhere you want a sun kissed look.

Minimize glow or 'break through' shine or oiliness by applying Mineral Rice Powder on TOP of the Mineral Foundation as a translucent powder.

EYES

Loose Mineral Eye Shadow: may be used wet or dry
Dry: apply directly to the eye lid area with a blending brush for all over cover.
Wet: add a drop of water to your Blending brush, dip into shadow and quickly apply to lid. This application reduces creasing and stays all day! Perfect for brides or that special occasion.

Liner: Convert loose Mineral Shadow to a liner by adding a drop of water or Visine to an Angle brush, dip into an eye shadow color of your choice and draw a line above and/or below your eye. Cry proof!

Brows: Long-lasting brows are easy! Apply a shadow color of your choice with an Angle brush. The powder will adhere to the oils in your skin for staying power. Blend with a Spooly brush to get tiny hair-like effects.

LIPS

Create your own lip color by first layering a clear gloss on your lips, then add a mineral blush, shadow or foundation color(s) of your choice on top, add one more layer of gloss for depth. But I'm here to tell you sun protection is essential in our quest for healthy skin. And healthy skin is VERY sexy.

So now that I have your attention, I'll make this short and sweet. If you get anything out of this article, get this: ALL rays do damage.

Estimates are that up to 85% of sun damage happens before we turn 18. 18! So here we are a few years or decades later experiencing wrinkles (loss of elasticity) that can't be restored and dark patches (hyperpigmentation) that we pay dearly for to lighten.

Outdoor rays, or UVB rays, are burning cancer rays (think B for burning). Indoor rays, or UVA rays, travel deeper into the dermis and are wrinkling/aging rays (think A for aging). Sitting under fluorescent lights at work or home? Better SPF up! UVA rays penetrate not only the upper epidermal layer of skin, but also the lower dermal layer where it affects living cells and structural damage ensues.

I often hear comments from my skincare clients like, "...but I'm only going to the mailbox," or "I'm only going to work or the grocery store," or worse yet, "I use a tanning bed so I don't need sunscreen." UVB rays bounce off the ground and through your car windows, while the fabulous fluorescent lights at the store deliver those aging UVA rays. And tanning beds DO NOT offer safe tanning rays. Period. Refer to and memorize paragraph 2 on this point.

Sun protection is more than a health issue. It's a life issue. Skin cancer is the easiest cancer to prevent. And the easiest way to prevent premature aging of the skin is a very simple application of sunscreen everyday.

So do yourself and your skin a favor: Apply a minimum SPF 15 moisturizing sunscreen everyday. Because leathery, wrinkled skin is absolutely not sexy.

Try Scosh Protect spf15 moisturizer; http://www.scoshskincare.com/s_moisturizers.php

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makeupandskincarepro.blogspot.com/2008/04/sassy-side-of-sunscreen-can-sun.html' title='The Sassy Side of Sunscreen - Can sun protection be sexy? So, let's replenish and revitalize with a few good tips.

Keep a scrub in your shower for a daily exfoliation to help your serums and moisturizers work better

Winter is the best time to use an enlightening serum to even out and brighten your complexion while gradually fading discolorations

A vitamin C firming eye gel is absolutely necessary in the winter as we have a tendency not to wear our sunglasses as often. Vitamin C is photo protective against UVB/UVA rays

Replenish much needed moisture with a moisturizer loaded with Hyaluronic Acid, a protein found naturally in our bodies which acts as a water magnet, holding 1000 times its weight in water

And don't forget - always wear your sunscreen or my dogs will come and bite your ankles, all 3 of them!

I suggest these products: Enlighten Scrub, Enlighten Serum, Vibran C Eye Gel, Extreme Hydrate, and Protect spf 15, http://www.scoshskincare.com/skincare.php

And you only need a...Scosh!

BOO!!! Scottsdale-based Scosh® Makeup & Skincare Studio has Halloween How - to’s for creating the perfect ghoulish creature for you or your kids. Using key makeup products such as eye liner pencil, lipstick, eye lash glue and concealer along with common household items like instant coffee and raw sugar can help you create hauntingly horrific cuts, scabs and zits.

Putting a little inspired energy into making a creepy Halloween costume is a breeze with these easy step-by-step instructions.

Scabs, what you need:
Instant coffee
Raw sugar
Eyelash glue
Red lipstick

Layer a pea size amount of eyelash glue to the area of the face where you want your ‘scab’, i.e. lip area. Let sit for 15 seconds to get tacky. Mix raw sugar and coffee together and press into the top of the eye lash glue. If you use more sugar the fresher or more infected the ‘scab’ will look. If you use more coffee, the older or drier the ‘scab’. Let dry. Lift an edge, dab a bit of red lipstick under the edge of the ‘scab’ to peek out and look like blood.

Zits, what you need:
Eyelash glue, white/clear
Raw sugar
Red lipstick
Tweezers

Dab a bit of white eye lash glue on the face where you intend your desired effect, let sit 15 seconds to get tacky. Use a tweezers to place a granule of raw sugar on top. Cover with more eyelash glue, let dry. Dab a little red lipstick around the perimeter of the ‘zit’ to make it look infected.

Cuts, what you need:
Black eye liner pencil
Cream concealer, lighter than your skin tone
Red lipstick

Draw line on face where you intend your desired effect. Layer red lipstick on top of line, no wider than the black line, but definitely thicker. The thicker the lipstick on top of your ‘cut’ the fresher the effect. Apply concealer close to the ‘cut’ on each side of the ‘cut’ to show swelling.

You can add a ‘scab’ anywhere along your cut to give even more dimension.

Enjoy and have a howlingly fun Halloween!

Visit my web site for a list of current and seasonal makeup classes; http://www.scoshskincare.com/scosh_school.php

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makeupandskincarepro.blogspot.com/2008/04/boo-home-made-light-special-effects-for.html' title='BOO!!!
