How to Handle Coupon Rejection

What do you do if the cashier won't take your coupon? I thought I would share how I handle this situation, as it does occur occasionally for me since I use a lot of coupons. An important thing to remember is to always be polite. Cashiers are usually just trying to follow their store's coupon redemption policy, and sometimes lack the necessary training to do this successfully.

Steps to Take When Your Coupon is Rejected:
1. Ask why the coupon you are trying to use can not be used, what is the store's specific policy?
2. Speak to the Manager if you are not satisfied with the cashier's response to your questions.
3. If you are told you can not use the coupon because your purchase does not qualify for it's use, ask for the coupon back and do not buy the product at that store (unless you need it right then).
4. Contact the Corporate Office if you are unsatisfied with the response you received when questioning the store's policy on coupon redemption (I have never done this, but have heard of other people doing so).

What if the Manager says "You have too many coupons"
This actually happened to me once at Walgreens, where I was buying a lot of items and had a manufacturer's coupon for most of them plus a Walgreens coupon to stack on top of those manufacturer's coupon. Of course I got a little frustrated by the comment "You have too many coupons", but I remained polite and asked for the Manager (who was assisting the cashier) to tell me which coupons I could not use and to give me those coupons back and remove those items from my transaction. When it came down to it, the Manager did accept most of my coupons, giving me two back simply because they wouldn't scan and he didn't want to override them.

Remember that . . .
* The store has the right to reject your coupons for any reason, and to change their store policy at any time. Of course, you are free to file a complaint with the Manager or Corporate Office.
* Most stores want to provide excellent customer service, and I find that most Managers will happily accept the coupons that the cashiers didn't want to accept (when the cashier couldn't give me a good reason why they wouldn't accept them).
* You have the option to shop at a different store if you do not like a store's policy on accepting coupons!

Campbell's Kitchen $15 in Coupons

Check out the Campbell's Kitchen Coupons and see if there are any you can print to help save money on your grocery shopping. You'll find a wide variety of Campbell's products including their soup, V-8, Pepperidge Farm. These are "bricks" coupons so you can print two of each coupon. The coupons I printed have expiration dates between January and June of 2010 so plenty of time to put them to use! I couldn't believe how many different "Chunky Soup" coupons they had and will use them to stock-up when there is a sale.

And don't forget to clip your Campbell's Labels for Education (visit for a free music download too). Ask kids you know if their school collects them, we give our labels to my niece to turn into her school.

Not Everyone Gets Freebies

I post freebies almost every day and thousands of people get them. But guess what? There's always a limit on how many freebies are given out. I want to remind you that the freebies are more like a random gift, something you're lucky to get (and not everyone will get them). Please don't be greedy with freebies.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't expect good customer service on your freebies. Sometimes the number of freebies available is announced, sometimes it's anyone's guess. And it's important to remember that no matter what, you are always paying for freebies with your time (and attention). Only you can determine the value of your time and use that to decide what to spend it on.

I just wanted to leave you with one word: gratitude. I'm grateful that you're reading my blog and I'm grateful for the companies who offer freebies. I'm hoping you will be grateful for some of the freebies you receive too! And remember that I'm here to help you get them. Sometimes it can be a frustrating experience - but you need to be a good judge of when to stop spending time trying to get a specific freebie.

Borders $100 Gift Card Giveaway

Borders sells a huge selection of toys and games. You're going to find your favorite educational brands, and lots of favorite characters and games in the expanded Borders Toys & Games section in over 500 stores. I was blown away by the huge selection, and spent several hours browsing all the toys and games trying to decide what to spend the $100 gift card on that Borders gave me as part of sponsoring this giveaway. Two lucky readers will win a $100 Borders Gift Card. You need to live close enough to a Borders store to be able to pick-up your gift card if you win!

What did I buy?
I was a little worried I might have a hard time spending $100 on toys and games at Borders. But the selection was so diverse and they featured some of my favorite toy brands (like Melissa & Doug, Battat, Creativity for Kids, Chicco and ALEX toys), so I had no problem finding great educational toys and games for my kids. I spent almost exactly $100 and I bought: Battat Take-A-Part Airplane, Melissa & Doug Responsibility Magnetic Chart, Melissa & Doug Magnetic Calendar, Frog & Toad Adventure Game, Thomas Making Tracks Game, Chimp and Zee Pesky Pirates Game and then a few small toys; diving toys, recorder plus a children's book to donate to a local charity. You can buy a book to donate at your store in the nationwide Borders Charity Book Drive, just ask the cashier about it!

Key to Saving at Borders
I found that Borders prices on toys and games was similar to prices at other retailers. But Borders offers high-value coupons and promotions which give you huge savings! If I would have purchased these toys without the advantage of the Borders promotions and coupons, they would have cost me over $150. So by using a 30% off one item coupon, understanding that if I bought 2 toys I'd get the 3rd one for free, and buying two Melissa & Doug toys at "Buy 1 Get 1 Half-Off", I got everything for about 33% off the sticker price. That's a great sale on these toys and games, and hard to beat if you made the exact same purchase at another store. But that's the other wonderful feature I noticed about the Borders toy and game selection - it's not comparable to other stores I shop at. Sure I'd find a few of these products at other stores, but not all in the same place.

I think of it as a free subscription because I get so many coupons that I can use from it that it actually helps me save money. For example, in the December issue there are $64.80 worth of coupons. I won't use them all, but most are for food products that I will be buying. Already subscribed? Extend your subscription at this great low price - they'll just add on 12 issues to your current subscription.

I bet that just using two or three coupons from each issue will more than pay for your low subscription cost of $1.41 per issue. And if you are using Swagbucks as your search engine, you may have even earned more than $20 in free Amazon.com gift cards - so this really could be a free subscription!

1. Coupons - You will never see a magazine with more coupons in it, not just money-saving coupons but coupons for FREE products and "free-after-rebate" forms. Most are manufacturer's coupons that you could use at any store.

2. Articles - I always find at least one article that I want to read thoroughly, like the recent "Buy When the Price is Right" that talks about the best time of the year to bargain hunt for all types of things.

3. 4. Get it by mail - I don't have to drive anywhere to get my copy of this magazine and I get it faster than my local Walmart store puts it on their newstand. This saves me time!

I love to tell you about free magazine subscriptions, so why am I sharing the $5 magazine subscriptions? Because I'm the first to admit that there are some magazines that I never see offered for free. I also recognize that most free magazine subscriptions are offered for a very short period of time (so you might miss them) or they are not for a full-year but only a few issues.
