Luckily the public are not swayed by the lies anymore - and no multimillion advertising blitz is likely to change things - call it the rice-and-beans / political skepticism phenomenon, and I for one welcome it back not a minute too soon.

I believe that by selling NB Power to Hydro Quebec is a mistake of astronomical proportions any province that sells its natural resources out-wright to another is asking to be someone else Bitch.
I think there should be a referendum for people to vote on this decisions being that it affects all New Brunswickers, I also believe its the government of New Brunswick, responsibility to inform us of all the pros and cons of this sellout and explain to the NB people in detail what would be our advantages of doing this, I feel frustrated at the audacity of our provincial government to put something so big on a plate without even asking public opinion.

How many times do maritimers have to get reamed up the old Cazoo! before we take a stand to fight for what is truly ours and take action against our government for being a communist government by making us feel like they can do whatever they feel like once they are elected and we have to sit on the sidelines and take it and shut the F'n up!

I myself, I am disgusted with this socialist communist bullshit we are a people that vote for are elected rep. So why do they feel they can screw us over like that and think they can get away with it, I will tell you why because we let them. We wouldn't let our children vandalize our community why would we put up with this crap from our Elected officials.

The debate on NB Power is now fully engaged, and there's a lot of anger out there, and there are a lot of accusations aimed at the government: that it has no mandate to do this, that it goes against self-sufficiency.

Let's take the easy one first. The self-sufficiency agenda was never about shutting our borders to commerce in favour of building, growing, and generating everything we need within the province. It was about eliminating the need for federal equalization payments. Reducing our total public debt (government and NB Power combined) from $12.5 billion to $7.8 billion is arguably a step in that direction, if (and it's a mighty big if) the province gets serious about paying down the rest of it.

So there's no contradiction there. But it's the Liberals who are to blame for the confusion. Rather than making it clear to voters that self-sufficiently meant an end to dependence on equalization, they gave in to the temptation to use the term as a slogan to justify all sorts of initiatives. By trying to make it mean everything, they allowed it to mean nothing.

Another line of attack is that the Liberals have "no mandate" to do this and that they are breaking an election promise. I see these two as not quite the same. A mandate, in political terms, is what the voters have given the government the permission to do, based mainly on election promises. But there has to be a sliding scale: by year four of a government's term, a lot can change, and governments must be able adapt to a changing context. The "mandate" notion doesn't contemplate everything that can happen.

This would be done he says by the signing of the Global Climate Treaty in Copenhagen in a few weeks.

Lord Christopher Monckton speaking at the Minnesota Free Market Institute 5 days ago said that within the climate treaty that Obama is so willing to sign, the ceding of our sovereignty awaits. A global government will be established that will be run of course by the U.N.; the scary part of all of this? Once Obama signs the climate treaty and if the Senate were to ratify that treaty, that treaty by virtue of Article 6 of the Constitution, would effectively trump the Constitution.

Essentially what would take place according to Lord Christopher Monckton is that rich countries like the United States would have its wealth transferred to poorer countries based on the fact that we screwed the planet’s climate up, while they (the poor countries) were just victims.

The big picture is this, once we enter into this treaty we will never be allowed to leave it. All member Nations of the treaty would have to “let you out”. We of course would never be let out because we would be forced to pay in the most since we “pollute” the most. Countries who are benefiting financially from our poor position of being in the Copenhagen Treaty would never allow us out.

Wrongfully convicted man's trial delayed 2 weeks

A man wrongfully convicted of murder will have to wait even longer for his civil trial to start after the case was adjourned for two weeks on Tuesday morning.

Erin Michael Walsh's five-week trial was supposed to begin on Tuesday morning in Saint John, but a lawyer representing Walsh had a death in the family. The trial has been rescheduled to start on Oct. 26.

Walsh is suing for compensation after being wrongfully convicted of murder in 1975.

Walsh's 1975 conviction was overturned by the New Brunswick Court of Appeal in 2008. He is suing the province, the Saint John city police and William McCarroll, a sitting judge who was the Crown prosecutor at the time, for compensation.

The New Brunswick Court of Appeal reviewed his case and overturned his conviction of second degree murder. This comes less than a month after the Province of New Brunswick and the Attorney General of Canada both said that Erin Walsh had likely been the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

The story of If Justice Fails begins on a hot, summer afternoon in 1975, in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Guilty in Shooting of Chi Chi Peters
A carload of petty criminals, a drunken tussle, a blast from a loaded shotgun. One man, Melvin 'Chi Chi' Peters, dies. Another, Erin Walsh, is charged with killing him. In court, the shooting of Chi Chi Peters is presented by the prosecutors as an open and shut case against Walsh. After a four-day trial, the jury takes just one hour to return a guilty verdict. Erin Walsh, convicted of second-degree murder, receives a life sentence with no parole before ten years. His claims of innocence are ignored.

In the three decades since Chi Chi Peters's death, questions remain about whether or not the right man did the time: questions about crucial documentation that never made it to the trial; about key witnesses who were never called to testify.

A Death Sentence
Now, thirty-two years after his conviction, Erin Walsh is still fighting to clear his name. But, with vindication possible, that fight has taken on a new urgency. Erin Walsh has terminal cancer. "I was diagnosed", he tells the fifth estate, "as having six to eight months to live. So, if you do the math, I'm already—you're sitting here talking to a dead man."

What Walsh discovered recently were documents, material previously undisclosed to his lawyers at the time of the trial, and evidence never presented in court. It is that evidence, Walsh believes, that could have cleared him of the murder charge in 1975.

Police attack Funk the War demo

Funk the War, a demonstration to demand an end to the war in Afghanistan and for increased education funding, was violently attacked by police this evening. At least 10 people were arrested, many are still in custody right now. One of the arrestees was reported to be bleeding from her face after being tackled by two cops into the the base of a light pole, she is currently sitting in the back of a police car without access to medical attention.

Currently, many of the arrestees are being held currently in the public safety building (corner of Exchange and Court St, downtown). A group is gathering outside to support them.

Reporters on the scene say that police attacked the crowd using clubs without any warning or orders to disperse. The first arrested was an African-American man who joined up midway into the march. Members of the crown questioned the obvious racism behind this act and some were arrested shortly after.

While spending my second night in a row at the Chalmers’ Hospital in Fredericton, a visit that was marked by yet another slew of tests and long waits, I was marched down a long series of hallways to the hospital’s Radiology Department.

Two consecutive, seven-hour ER trips has a way of tempering one’s appetite towards hospitals, and so I must admit that the prospect of laying on a cold, sterile table while X-Rays were shot through my lower abdomen was a less than appealing prospect at that moment. So, as I nervously waited outside in the Radiology Department’s waiting room, my eyes fell to the coffee table beside me in the hope that something might be there to take my mind off what was to soon transpire.

There were only two things on the table: a worn and battered copy of TIME magazine (that was opened to an all too appealing article titled, “Malaria”), and a copy of the NB Media Co-op’s August Edition of The Brief.

Even though I have poured over that little gem from the NB Media Co-op countless times before, I could not help but glance over the articles. And so, as I was let into the examination room, the fresh rage stemming from Dave Steele’s article about Downtown Fredericton, Inc.’s removal of posters acted as a strange comfort as countless X-Rays were fired all over.

We are often told in today’s world that we must always be thinking of ourselves. Be it neoliberalism or New Age, the message of our times is to always be working to improve ourselves, and – in doing so – we are also led to believe that the problems of the world will all somehow fall into place.

Be it justifying acts of charity by calling it “resume-building”, self-help books that talk of positive thinking as the cure for all, or conceptions of discrimination and oppression that ignore systemic causes in light of “individual intolerance”, we are constantly surrounded by such a pervasive individualism that some have gone as far to say that North America has become a “cult of the individual”.

OTTAWA – The new HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) will hurt thousands of Ontarians already paying more than their fair share of taxes, according to both Federal New Democrat Leader Jack Layton and Provincial New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath. Both Leaders were in London today calling on their respective governments to stop their plan to implement the HST.

"Dalton McGuinty's HST means 8 per cent more on the basics like home heating, gasoline, and the morning coffee. Instead of helping to create jobs in hard hit communities, McGuinty is making life less affordable, and that will hurt London families," said Horwath.

The HST will mean an 8% increase on gas, hydro and everyday purchases like coffee and newspapers. This will hurt the pocketbooks of Ontario families and the economic recovery. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce has reported that the HST will slow job growth by up to 40,000 jobs per year.

New Democrats, both federally and provincially have unwaveringly opposed the HST.

“Stephen Harper has bribed McGuinty’s government to agree to shift the tax burden onto hard-working Canadians. They must be stopped,” said Layton. “Dalton McGuinty and Michael Ignatieff are in support of this tax grab. Well, I’m proud to stand here with Andrea to tell Stephen Harper’s government, and the Liberals, that they face strong opposition from New Democrats. We will oppose your tax grab at every level.” said Layton.

Geneva - Swiss drugmaker Novartis said Tuesday it has started shipping vaccines against the A(H1N1) virus, better known as swine flu, to the United States.

The company began sending doses last week from a production seed strain provided by the World Health Organization. This strain had a low yield, but Novartis said it has switched to a higher yielding one to allow for larger production volumes.

The Basel-based pharmaceutical giant also shipped 27 million doses of its seasonal flu vaccine ahead of schedule, in what it said was anticipation of 'demand for earlier vaccination with seasonal influenza vaccine created by the current global A(H1N1) influenza pandemic.'

The shipment was its largest ever to the US.

Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine is a sub-unit (purified surface antigen) influenza virus vaccine prepared from virus propagated in the allantoic cavity of embryonated hens’ eggs inoculated with a specific type of influenza virus suspension containing neomycin and polymyxin. The influenza virus strain is harvested and clarified by centrifugation and filtration prior to inactivation with betapropiolactone. Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine is formulated to contain 15 mcg hemagglutinin (HA) per 0.5-mL dose of the following virus strain: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v-like virus.

The 0.5-mL prefilled syringe presentation is formulated without preservative. Thimerosal, a mercury derivative used during manufacturing, is removed by subsequent purification steps to a trace amount (≤ 1 mcg mercury per 0.5-mL dose). The 5-mL multidose vial formulation contains thimerosal, a mercury derivative, added as a preservative. Each 0.5-mL dose from the multidose vial contains 25 mcg mercury.

Polling has begun in Ireland's second referendum on the European Union's Lisbon treaty - a vote that may usher in planned reforms or keep the 27-member bloc without a constitution.

Irish voters rejected the treaty in an earlier referendum in June 2008, by a margin of almost seven per cent.

But opinion polls on Friday suggest the yes-vote will win this time.

Dublin has received assurances from EU partners that its sovereignty on issues like taxation, military neutrality and abortion will not be affected by adopting the Treaty of Lisbon.

The result is expected on Saturday afternoon.

On the heels of a massive exercise of U.S. police repression against G20 protestors, including use of a wartime sonic acoustic weapon also being utilized in Iraq, Stephen Harper made the above declaration during a press conference in Pittsburgh where it was announced that Canada would be hosting the next G20 meeting in 2010. (See the text of the remarks here.)

Unsurprisingly, no world leaders walked out as he said this, nor was he subsequently denounced, for Indigenous Holocaust denial.

Or perhaps Harper and I are not on the same page -- is colonialism not defined as the practice and processes of domination, control, and forced subjugation of one people to another? As most bluntly stated by Duncan Campbell Scott, Head of the Department of Indian Affairs in the 1920's: "Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question."

I expect Harper has read the federal government's own report on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, which explicitly lays out Canada's imposition of a colonial relationship (indeed, that is the heading of one of the chapters) on Indigenous people. Measures employed include the Indian Act, residential schools, forcible relocation including to reservations, the imposed Band Council system, institution of a pass system (which was subsequently borrowed by apartheid South Africa), germ warfare, outlawing of ceremonies such as the potlatch and traditional activities such as fishing, failed treaty processes, and other forced assimilation polices including the Act for the Gradual Assimilation of Indian Peoples.

The best real economic indicator available is the Baltic Dry Index and it clearly shows that world trade is grinding to a halt as the battle to take down the Federal Reserve Board approaches its climax.

An even better illustration is in the photos shown here of a ghost fleet bigger than the combined US and UK navies.

This is only one of many ghost fleets accumulating around the world as trade grinds to a stop.

The Feds, like junkies selling off anything and everything to get another dose, meanwhile, just sold the Poles and the Czechs to the Russians by cancelling their missile defense in central Europe in exchange for a few pennies and a bit more time.

After years of trying to encircle and defeat Russia now suddenly NATO is calling for an alliance with them. However, the Russians have not forgotten it was the Feds who were responsible for the great horrors that killed over 100 million Slavs during the 20th century. They will accept the military treasures this junkie is offering at a pittance but I seriously doubt it means they are about to crawl into bed with them.

Expect more unusual news over the coming crucial days and stay alert because nobody should ever under-estimate the criminal genius of the Feds.

It blew in like a hurricane from hell, pouring by 8 a.m. when the victims’ family members began reading off the names of their lost, often losing it themselves. Perhaps it was a rain of tears, a storm whipped up by a wind of fury that the ache of loss had not washed away with tears or the rain or the eight years passed since 9/11/01, on that loveliest of cloudless, sunny, cool fall mornings, accentuating the irony and pain of remembrance still more.

Of course, I remembered the earlier years of 9/11 when the church, the graveyard, the stones and iron fence were a grayish white, a ghost landscape thanks to the pyroplastic cloud of a million tons of concrete and poisons and god knew what else that settled on them, the earth, the surrounding streets, even as thousands of visitors flooded in from all over the world, some of them victims’ relatives, others simply there in sympathy, some in sheer curiosity at the devastation.

Physically, Ground Zero hadn’t changed that much since then. The only newly constructed completed building you could point to is, ironically, Larry Silverstein’s Tower Seven, a large thumb in your face that made you want to snap it off at its joint to cause that sonofabitch sitting up there a pain back in kind. I’d heard him earlier on Channel One TV, whining that he couldn’t get the full financing he needed to complete the projects of rebuilding that he so cannily had cornered. Perhaps it was his payback, above and beyond his $500 million insurance profit for Tower Seven alone that helped him put up his building so quickly.

One’s mind flashed over the usual 9/11 suspects as the wind and rain beat on your face and washed them away, cooling your simmering emotions. In fact, there among the gathering crowd of protestors was my friend John Uhlich from Chicago, standing with a poster of his 20-year old cousin who had been lost in Tower One. John, an engineer on the Union Pacific line, made this pilgrimage each year to honor his cousin, and to protest the infamy that brought that young life to its violent end. I had befriended John the previous year and shown him then the first copy of my new book State Of Shock – Poems from 9/11 on. He greeted me with a smile and firm handshake. We’d had dinner the night before and he brought a copy for me to sign.

NATIVE leaders in Canada said they were "horrified" after receiving body bags from health officials as part of Canada's swine flu preparedness kits.

Aboriginal communities in Canada's Manitoba province were hard-hit by the deadly A(H1N1) outbreak some months ago and since then had asked Ottawa for medical supplies to prepare for a second wave likely to strike soon.

Leaders of more than 30 First Nations communities said they received "dozens of body bags from Health Canada as part of Canada's preparedness plan on H1N1".

The body bags arrived in kits containing hand sanitisers and face masks.

"We had asked for funding so we can get organised and to ensure medicines, hand sanitisers and other preventative kits were in place, but instead we are shocked to receive body bags," Jerry Knott, chief of the Wasagamack First Nation, said.

"This is an ominous sign that the Government is predicting a grim outcome," Chief David McDougall of the Saint Theresa Point band added.

Canada's Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said she had asked officials for an explanation.

"The successful refurbishment of Point Lepreau is of significant importance to New Brunswickers, and I am very concerned with the impact that these delays will have on our province," Graham said in a statement.

Graham said Wednesday that NB Power completed its portion of the massive construction project on time, and that the delays only started accruing when Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. became involved.

The premier also accused AECL of showing a "lack of focus" on the refurbishment project.

The Union: The Business Behind Getting High is a 2007 documentary film by Canadian filmmaker Brett Harvey. The film explores the illegal growth, sale and trafficking of marijuana. Its theatrical run was limited to film festivals. The film follows host Adam Scorgie as he examines the underground market, interviewing growers, police officers, criminologists, economists, doctors, politicians and pop culture icons, revealing how the industry can function despite being a criminal enterprise. The history of marijuana and the reasons for its present prohibition are discussed, often comparing it to the prohibition of alcohol in the United States in the 1930s, suggesting that gang drug warfare and other negative aspects associated with marijuana are a result of prohibition, not the drug itself. The gangs that grow and traffic the drugs are likened to those that appeared in major U.S. cities during the Prohibition, with the intention of profiting from the sale of illegal alcohol.

The film received numerous honors, some of which included the National Film Board Award for "Best Canadian Documentary" at the 2007 Edmonton International Film Festival, "Outstanding Documentary Feature" at the 2007 Winnipeg International Film Festival, "Grand Prize Best Editing" at the 2007 Rhode Island International Film Festival, "People's Choice" and "Best Canadian Documentary" at the 2008 Okanagan Film Festival and runner up for "People's Choice Most Popular Canadian Film" at the 2007 Vancouver International Film Festival. All together the documentary was officially accepted to 31 International Film Festivals. Most recently it was also nominated for "Best British Columbia Feature Film of 2007" by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle.

WASHINGTON - After years of delay caused by inadequate intelligence, the U.S. government decided just one day before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that it would try to overthrow the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan if a diplomatic push to expel Osama bin Laden from the country failed, the independent panel investigating the attacks reported Tuesday.

The plans were reported in May 2002 by MSNBC.com and NBC News, but the details and precise timing were revealed for the first time in the new report released Tuesday by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States.

Three-phase plan to force bin Laden’s expulsion
In the report, which was released at the outset of Tuesday’s hearing, the commission said the plan that senior Bush officials agreed upon on Sept. 10, 2001, featured three phases aimed at forcing the Taliban to expel bin Laden:

The United States would initially use diplomacy to persuade the Taliban to expel bin Laden and, if that failed, conduct a covert program aimed at “encouraging anti-Taliban Afghans to attack al-Qaida bases.”

If those steps failed, the senior Bush administration officials “agreed that the United States would seek to overthrow the Taliban regime through more direct action,” the report said.

But before the plan could be submitted to the president, bin Laden’s terrorists struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing nearly 3,000 people.
