Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. This was send to me and I share it so one can gauge the "city resources" on hand. You will find references to city employees in bold.<em> </em></div><div align="left"><em></em></div><div align="left"><em>On Tuesday I joined thousands of others at the funeral services at the Staples Center, the difference is that I was backstage with the artist and <strong>many high ranking Police and Fire Personnel.</strong> I entered Staples Center before 6:00am and spent a little time looking at the stage set-up and noticing the only people around <strong>were police officers</strong> and Staple's employee's. I felt a little out of place since I was the only one in street clothes, although I was in a suit, no other public was in the building at that time. Just before 7:00am I was asked by staff if I wanted breakfast, which I accepted (you know me...... I ate two plates) and felt very comfortable. <strong>Many high ranking L.A.P.D. Officer were walking around including SWAT Officers with high powered semi-auto-matic rifles. It was just shy of seeing Military type of presence.</strong> Some of the early arrivals included..... Smokey Robinson, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Stevie Wonder, and Lionel Richie with his daughter. Other artist arrived through a different entrance such as.... Brooke Shields, Usher, P. Diddy, Mike Tyson and Rev. Sharpton, whom I seen all backstage. When I walked to the Producers Office in Chick Hearns 'Room' shortly after 9:00am and looked at the T.V. monitor and seen the procession is when I started to get nervous. I had no idea that they were going to actually bring the family and services to Staples Center.<br /></div></em><div align="left"><em>I had been recognized enough most of the morning, that my presence was accepted and even utilized for assisting with minor details for the arrangements. The time came when the procession approached and <strong>parked at the 'Ramp' (right next to a Heavy Armored SWAT Truck)</strong> and the Family brought in the casket. I was close enough to assist with holding open the black curtain and seeing all things take place within 6 feet from where I was standing. I had no idea how beautiful the casket was until I seen it and touched the high polished gold toned casket draped with red roses. They immediately placed the casket behind 2 double doors <strong>with about six Police Officers in the doors and about 10 Officers outside the doors.</strong> I stood about 10 feet away across the hall until the entire Jackson Family was ready to be seated. All the artist left the dressing rooms and the Family took their seats, that is when the double doors opened and moved the casket into position before the Ceremony was to begin. <strong>Again I was only within 6 feet of the casket while the Police Officers held the black curtains heading toward the entrance to the Arena area.</strong> This time I did not help as much since the program was about to begin. The choir started, the black curtain split and the ceremony commenced, with a walking procession just 3 to 5 feet in front of me before the light turned on and the audience had a first glimpse of the show that would be seen by billions world-wide.<br /></div></em><div align="left"><em>During my time backstage I had a chance to have Stevie Wonder, Brooke Shields Usher, and Mariah Carey sign my Gold Program which will undoubtedly be a remarkable keepsake. <strong>As I was there, staff from the Mayor's Office asked if I could get them a copy for Mr. Villaraigosa, Fire Chief Berry, Chief Fry, and a couple of others. I also handed copies to Captain Chow, L.A.P.D public relations Officer and another copy for Police Chief Bratton. I thank them all for a wonderful job and handling this event. After all things closed, lunch was served and I walked outside to see the light of day and still thousands of people roamed the streets.<br /></div></strong></em><div align="left"><em>I will never forget this experience and the many pleasurable times I have had, not only at this event but all the events I attend regularly. Thanks to many of you reading this, that I may be able to proceed and achieve many great things with support of family and friends.<br /></div></em><div align="left"><em>I am grateful to the Jackson Family <strong>and the City of Los Angeles for providing this exclusive opportunity.</strong> Thank you to Michael for be an outstanding humanitarian and his success as an entertainer.<br /><br />"It's not what you know, It's who knows you."</em></div><div align="center"><br /></div><div align="center"><em></em></div><div align="left">.....and the rest of us pay for this exclusive thanks to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><strong>Other News:</strong></div><div align="left"><strong></strong></div><div align="left">** Judy Chu is going to Congress after <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-congress15-2009jul15,0,4001161.story">convincing win in the 32nd Congressional District.</a> No word whether Parke Skelton and Eric Hacopian were seen toasting one another for their joint efforts.</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><strong>**</strong> Los Angeles Mayor chief counsel Thomas Saenz <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-saenz15-2009jul15,0,5668192.story">is leaving City Hall to become the head of MALDEF</a>. Walker has withdrawn from the race for CD2 to replace Wendy Greuel. This takes us down to 14 potential candidates in a amazingly crowded field. Here is the letter he sent out explaining his reasons for withdrawing and what he hopes to see from the next CD2 representative.</span><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Dear Friends and Fellow Stakeholders:<br /><br />I have spent these past few weeks, exploring the (real) possibilities of entering this City Council race. I’ve had the experience of being able to speak with most, if not all of our community leaders. To sit down with several of our elected officials and a number of business owners. In fact, I got calls and emails from people I did not know at all and they all urged me to run – with the same mantra. “YOU CAN WIN”!<br /><br />The magnitude of calls and emails has been both astounding and humbling to me. I just never had any idea that my community thought of me in this way. It’s a remarkable feeling and extremely rewarding on a very personal level.<br /><br />Now, having said that, I think this job must include a (real) passion, desire and the potential to commit, to over 13 years to an office. You cannot work 16 hour days, 6-7 days per week without those qualities or you will not be effective and you would be doing an injustice to those who put you if office.<br /><br />I’ve made many new friends and political allies. I’ve listened to those that I have been with. I’ve heard the issues from different perspectives – from the homeowner, to the retiree. The young couple just getting started and the small business owner and not surprisingly, all the issues start off singularly, but they eventually all end up in the same funnel and come out with the same purpose:<br /><br />(1) FIX OUR INFRASTRUCTURE, (2) EMPOWERMENT TO THE<br />PEOPLE, (3) MANDATE MITIGATIONS BEFORE ANY DEVELOPMENT IS ALLOWED, (4) BE IN CONTROL OF OUR MONEY and finally (5) A LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY – WHERE DOES THE BUCK STOP – WHO IS RESPONSIBLE – WHO IS IDENTIFIABLE?<br /><br />One of my goals if elected was to have established a CD2 SWITCHBOARD. This would allow callers to speak to a live person, ask a question, ask for assistance, file a complaint – something that would give each of us in our community the right to immediate access to our representatives. Those calls would have been put together in my office and given to me on a prioritized list. Part of my everyday process would have been to (personally) make two return calls myself, daily and to also have daily briefings where that LIST of callers is part of what would become my COMMUNITY MORNING AGENDA and assign representatives to respond to all callers and then, report back to me. Working with our local colleges, and offering internships in exchange for credits would have covered the staffing issues. I would still like to implement this plan and hope that our next CD2 representative understands the importance of involvement.<br /><br />I have found that for all of us, not feeling like we are part of the system makes most of us step away and not want to get involved! That does not make for a stronger community. It’s up to us, (and our elected officials) to create a more user friendly system.<br /><br />One where EVERYONE FEELS INVOLVED, WHERE EVERYONE HAS A VOICE. I found, during my exploration for this office that these and several other issues are the things that my community would like to have happen – and if I am not going to be the candidate, I will work hard with that Councilperson to help bring these issues to reality – and that by doing this, our Councilperson understands that the stakeholders are involved, hopefully giving our Councilperson strength and empowerment when sitting in City Council.<br /><br />Because I am a single Father and because one of my children lives with a disability – and has asked me not to run, I had to make a choice – and of course, that wasn’t hard to do. So it is with mixed feelings that I say Thank You – Thank You for even thinking of me in this capacity.<br /><br />I will still be involved – and I want all of you to be as well. WE can make a real difference in this election. A difference that could and will affect the lives of all of us in CD2, perhaps forever!<br /><br />Let’s make it clear what we expect! Let’s offer up a Mandate to our next Councilperson and make it clear, we are 100% with you – as long as you don’t lose sight of the goal! Let’s not let this one slip away! Let’s control this election so that our next Councilperson KNOWS WHOM THEY REPRESENT!<br /><br />Let’s make it clear!<br /><br />Thank you all, very, very much.<br />Best Regards,<br />John T. But 15 years ago we had a dispute with the city over our business tax classification. The city argued that we should be in an "occupations and professions" classification that has an extremely high tax rate, while we fought for a "wholesale and retail" classification with a much lower rate. The city forced us to invest a small fortune in legal fees over two years, but we felt it was worth it in order to establish the correct classification once and for all.<br /></em></div><div align="left"><em>After enduring a series of bureaucratic hearings, we anxiously awaited a ruling to find out what our tax rate would be. Everything was at stake. We had already decided that if we lost, we would move.<br /></em></div><div align="left"><em>You can imagine how relieved we were on July 1, 1994, when the ruling was issued. We won, and firmly planted our roots in the City of Angels and proceeded to build our business.<br /></em></div><div align="left"><em>Everything was fine until the city started running out of money in 2007. Suddenly, the city announced that it was going to ignore its own ruling and reclassify us in the higher tax category. </em></div><div align="left"><em></em></div><div align="left"><em>Even more incredible is the fact that the new classification was to be imposed retroactively to 2004 with interest and penalties. No explanation was given for the new classification, or for the city's decision to ignore its 1994 ruling.</em></div><div align="left"><em></em></div><div align="left"><em>Their official position is that the city is not bound by past rulings -- only taxpayers are. This spurs a job-creating ripple effect on the city's economy. Yet I suspect many companies like ours already have quietly left town in the face of the city's taxes and regulations. This would help explain the erosion of jobs.<br />Regardless of the outcome of our case, the arbitrary and capricious behavior of some bureaucrats is creating a lose-lose situation for everyone involved. If we win in court, the taxpayers of Los Angeles will have lost because all those tax dollars will have been wasted on needless litigation.<br /></em></div><div align="left"><em>If we lose in court, the remaining taxpayers in Los Angeles will have lost because their burden will continue to swell as yet another business moves its jobs -- and taxpayers -- to another city.<br /></em></div><div align="left"><em>As long as City Hall operates like a banana republic, why is anyone surprised that jobs have left the city in droves and Los Angeles is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy?</em></div><div align="left"><em></em></div><div align="left">As it appears in today's Wall Street Journal</div><p>Wonder if the likes of LA's Chamber of Commerce Gary Toebben, David Fleming or VICA's Stuart Waldman will care to comment on this great dissertation regarding the negative climate for businesses in Los Angeles ??</p><p>Your thoughts...............................</p><p><strong><em>**Newcombe was just on the Sean Hannity Radio Show. The Burbank Assemblyman who recently moved into an apartment in Valley Village announced his entry into the race - which has already attracted a wide field of candidates - at a press opportunity Thursday in Valley Glen.<br /><br />The election to choose Greuel's successor will take place September 22nd. She came not to stump speech or lay promises on Wendy's former constituents, but to address a sticky issue that threatens to derail her campaign in this foothills community; her husband, former <a href="http://www.vica.com/">VICA</a> CEO, Brendan Huffman.<br /><br />Brendan, as you may recall from past Mayor Sam stories, is the outspoken and uninformed shill who showed up at several hearings pleading on Home Depot's behalf. At these hearings, Brendan predicted City wide meltdown if Home Depot was not allowed to open in Sunland-Tujunga. He wrote an article in the San Fernando Valley Business Journal where he mistakenly claimed that Home Depot owned the property, mislabeled the community fight as a fight by a competitor, blamed it all on day laborers (never an issue), and failed to understand that just because you are Home Depot, you can't open where you damn well please.<br /><br />Tamar opened her remarks by saying something like, "You know ladies how often our husbands can be wrong". This brought a chuckle from the room and helped to break the tension. Tamar told of the many "discussions" her and her husband held about the Home Depot issue and then added that no one tells her how to think or act.<br /><br />She continued by relating the numerous cases, as a prosecutor, that she has pursued against Home Depot in Van Nuys for their unwillingness to deal with their site being overrun by day laborers, who she said "urinate, fight, gamble and drink".<br /><br />She is to be commended for finally making a trip up to S-T to take on this issue. She dealt with it pretty well, she managed to place some distance between her and Brendan, and just maybe the community can try really, really hard to separate her from him. It won't be easy, but tonight was a good start.<br /><br />Tamar has some real competition in this race with Krekorian, Essel, Sheftel, Benson, possibly Pugliese, and others. The last thing she needs is to have to drag around the baggage of a spouse that's never seen a proposed development that he didn't love.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><wfw:commentRss>http://mayorsam.blogspot.com/feeds/<$BlogItemNumber$>/comments/default</wfw:commentRss><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8826939-2864564879299632617?l=mayorsam.blogspot.com'/></div>Joe B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/01630594601192466787noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826939.post-52235177435418850272009-07-08T23:00:00.000-07:002009-07-09T09:28:10.702-07:00Morning Briefs and Outtakes on the Jackson Memorial continues<div align="center"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FvYmf4tPA1A/SlVq73ItASI/AAAAAAAABg4/4pHr1j8_bFI/s1600-h/Leiweke+with+civic+leaders.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356304908472353058" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 268px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FvYmf4tPA1A/SlVq73ItASI/AAAAAAAABg4/4pHr1j8_bFI/s400/Leiweke+with+civic+leaders.jpg" border="0" /></a> "AEG's Tim Leiweke, NBA Commish David Stern and local politicos"</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left">An axiom of life is "if one wants something, then you must pay the price".</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left">With that theme in mind, lets use the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and Los Angeles City Hall as an example. </div><div align="left">AEG wanted to built a "destination attraction" to stimulate the development of new revenue streams, radiating from the area around the Staples Center, at the best possible price. </div><div align="left">The politicos at City Hall wanted a new tourist draw in an area vacated on most evenings after events at the Staple Center, to bring in new tax revenues.</div><div align="left">And what did each party get in their respective quests ??
