With the recent announcement of Palm's new webOS, it's clear that, sadly, the days of PalmOS are numbered. Only one supporting product is currently available at Palm's web-site, the Centro smartphone.

Accordingly, AP2 Creative Science intends to migrate many of its applications (including TMC and 1DC) across to new mobile platforms including Windows Mobile and Symbian. A PC version may also be in the works.

In the meantime, users of Windows Mobile and Symbian may wish to check out the StyleTap application that allows them to run old PalmOS apps on new devices (Palm Treo Pro, HTC, Nokia, Sony-Erikkson etc.).

In the new updates of TMC and 1DC (end of February) we will be testing and optimizing the applications to run in StyleTap as well as the original native PalmOS.

New! The TMC Players Cup

On November 7th 2008, we will start the inaugral season of the TMC Players Cup (TPC) . The competition is open to all and has a cash prize of $25 for the winner. Also, for the first 10 player registrations received we will donate $2.50 to the Primary Club charity!

Each player selects a team to manage from any of the 40 classic archive teams distributed with TMC (i.e. Test Nations from 1876-2006). When all registrations are in, we will we set up the schedule of games and venues. Then each player will be e-mailed a selection-sheet that allows them to pre-determine their team line-ups for each game.

Then the fun begins ... players sit back while the administrator plays out the Test Matches in Palm-v-Palm mode and blogs the results screenshots on a daily basis. We expect the tournament to last around 4-5 weeks with an initial phase of group matches (2 groups of 5 teams) followed by semi-finals, 3rd place play-off and a final 5-match series.
Sign-up is free, just send an email to alansimmo@msn.com with suject line "TPC sign-up" stating:

1. Your tournament "nickname" (e.g "Beefy83", "John Doe" etc. to appear on the blog)
2. Your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice archive team (e.g Aus 73, Eng 65, NZ 84)

(Don't send in any team line-up selections just yet - that happens later.)

Rules:

1. Closing date for receipt of sign-up email is November 3rd at 7pm GMT.

2. If we receive more than 10 entries we will draw 10 at random.

3. If we receive less than 10 entries we will add random "bot" teams (under full Palm AI control)
4. The $25 prize (cheque or PayPal) will be awarded to the final winner (or highest place human if a "bot" team wins).

5. If multiple players select the same 1st choice team, priority will go on chronological order of player's sign-up (1st come 1st served). The "later" player will be assigned their 2nd (or 3rd) choice. If necessary, players will be contacted to ask for 4th choice etc.

6. The following handicaps will be applied: The tournament's 2 highest rated teams (based on their good-pitch autopick rating) will play all games with form=2, next 6 highest teams with form=3, lowest 2 teams with form=4.

7. In the draw for the group stage, teams are split into two groups of five. Each group will be assigned one Form=2 team, three Form=3 teams and one Form=4 team.

8. Each team will play 4 matches against the other teams in their group (2 at home, 2 away)

9. Players are permitted to make changes to their team selections at any time prior to the start of a game (re-submit your selection sheet).

10. The team selections will be secret.

11. Group standings will be decided on (i) number of games won, then (ii) number of draws/ties, then (iii) head-to-head results, then (iv) team with lowest average rating in head-to-head games.

12. The top 2 teams in each group will progress to the single-match semifinals with the group winners playing at home against the runner up from the other group.

13. A 3rd place play-off will occur between losing semi-finalists, with the lower rated team taking home advantage.

14. The final will be a 5-match series with higher rated team hosting the first two matches and the lower rated team hosting the final three. The 4th and 5th matches will only take place if required.

15. In the event of a drawn/tied semi-final, 3rd place match or a tied final series, a Twenty20 match will be played immediately afterwards at the same venue to decide the winner. Team selections from the previous match will carry over to the T20 game. A tied T20 will be decided by coin toss.

16. The pre-match injury option will be disabled so every player will be available for selection.

17. Players' only strategy is to pre-determine their team selections. The choice of captains, the toss and all other decisions will be chosen by Palm AI.

18. Players may choose the Autopick option. This will be the default if no team selections are made.

19. The Administrator's decision is final on all matters.

20. The owners of AP2 Creative Science and their relatives may not enter this competition.

21. One entry per person.

22. Each player must own a valid TMC or 1DC Palm registration key.

One-Day Cricket Released!

We are proud to announce to release of the new game One-Day Cricket (1DC)

This is a one-day / T20 version of the classic TMC game. The new game has a similar look and feel to the classic TMC with some additional features:

Runs v overs plot comparisons
Seperate statistics queries for ODI/T20
New graphics
League bonus points based on run-rate method
Fielding 'attack' restrictions in early overs
Free Hits after no-balls
Advanced AI rules developed for limited over format
Status bar shows current and required run-rates as well as target runs

Both 1DC and TMC share common custom and archive team database files, so you can use your existing TMC teams and add new "1-Day" specialist squads. A new archive team pack will be released with the latest 2008 one-day international squads.

New 'roller' feature. Light or heavy roller may be applied to pitch as per ICC laws.
League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Table. In league mode, all players are awarded performance points. The MVP Table ranks the top players.
Fantasy competition: Human v Palm. Select 3 players each for your fantasy rosters at the start of each league. Points awarded based on total MVP scores.
Look up stats during a match.
Stats page 'filter'. Limit stats search to current league, series or date range.
Stats page arrows (< >) for moving between multi-players e.g. for team stats.

About the extra teams

The extra team archive download packs are all *.pdb files. To load a new archive:

Download the file,
Extract it with WinZip,
HotSync the file to your device.

Note that every time you HotSync a new archive file, the existing archive will be overwritten on your device. If you want to keep any of the previous new archive teams, you should "multi-copy" them before HotSyncing a new archive. Go to EDIT TEAMS, then select NEW, then MULTI-COPY. However, because each archive contains the original (v1.0) 40 teams plus the new teams, there is no need to use multi-copy for any of the original 40 teams.

TMC awarded programming prize

Test Match Cricket for Palm has recently been awarded 1st place in the NS Basic/Palm Programming Contest 2007.

Judges commented:

"We were bowled over by this one. Would the Australia 1876 team beat Bangladesh 2006? (We don't know - the match was rained out late on the 5th day for a draw.) Amazing graphics, organization and attention to detail - you can play against the Palm's AI strategy, or, if you're lazy, make it play against itself."

Version 1.2.1 has been released (November 4th 2007). We have fixed a few minor bugs from v1.2. The new update ensures that:

When human bowls first on the first game played after installation, the number of overs per day is correctly calculated.
Batsmen never appear blank after innings change (added new dialog box to prevent 'skipping' of the batting order screen).
Custom team edits can be made between games in a series.
Records: corrected occasional junk text, corrected record individual score message after declaration, ensured that "not out" * notation is correctly assigned if the individual score record is reset during the innings.
Run Autopick menu option can now be used for Palm's team even if 'Palm Uses Autopick' is set to off.
Modified draft selection rules to prevent multiple players with the same last name appearing in the pool.

TMC v1.2 released

Version 1.2 is now available for download from PocketGear (formerly PalmGear). Enjoy.

New features include:

Statistics Page. Retrieves player stats from the results file giving you access to individual averages, high scores, best bowling figures etc.

Series Manager. Allows you to play a test match series of up to 5 games. Series statistics can be reviewed including the 'Man of the Series'.

Player Injuries. Players can get injured mid-series and bowlers can become unfit to bowl during a game, especially if over-used. Batsmen can be promoted to the bowling squad to provide cover for injured bowlers.

Palm AutoPick. With this option checked, the Palm selects the optimum team for each match from the 16-man squad, rather than the default.

Records. View real-life test records to compare with TMC records.

Wicket-Keeper options. Multiple WK selections are allowed. The lower skilled WK converts to a batsman only.

Hotkeys. TREO and CENTRO users can control the game with keyboard buttons.

Ground info. Added maps and information on the grounds. New grounds added in Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

Form Adjustments. During match setup you can make temporary adjustments to a team's overall skills before each match, e.g. to apply historical weighting factors or just to make the match easier / harder.

Shuffle Teams / Grounds. Teams and grounds can be selected at random.

"Draft" squad picker. Go head to head with the palm selecting a fantasy 16-man squad from a 32-man "pool" of random players. The process is similar to the "draft" used in American Football. You can then play off your fantasy team against the Palm's team in a one-off match or a series.

New team packs released.

All Time Greats. 16 new teams based on the all time top 32 players for each of the 8 major international cricket sides.

Test Sides for 2007. Updated skills for 9 Test teams based on statistics up to August 2007.

World Cricket League. 19 new teams from the WCL Divs 1-3 plus USA. Skills are based on statistics from recent WCL and ICC trophy matches (scaled to Test Match equivalents).
