The Long Island Ducks led all clubs in the circuit with four players selected. Outfielder Henry Rodriguez, second baseman Carlos Hernandez, lefty starter Lance Davis and closer Todd Erdos were named to the squad selected by Atlantic League general managers.

Rodriguez was selected after winning the Atlantic League's batting crown with a .322 batting average in 92 games, while finishing second in the league in on-base percentage (.413) and slugging percentage (.603). In addition to league achievements, the former Expo also tied the franchise's single season home run record with 27, equaling the mark set by Kimera Bartee in 2004.

Hernandez earned honors by batting .321, one thousandth of a point shy of earning a share of the 2005 AL batting title with Rodriguez, with 38 extra base hits and a .390 on-base percentage. The former Mariner was named to the 2005 North Division All-Star team and led the club with 39 stolen bases, 78 runs and 67 RBI.

Davis was named left-handed pitcher of the year after posting an 11-8 mark in 24 starts for Long Island in 2005. The southpaw set the franchise's single season wins mark and became the Ducks' all-time wins leader with 19 in his two seasons with Long Island. The former Red finished the season ranked third in the AL with a 3.76 ERA and was named Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month in July.

Named the closer of the All-Star team, Erdos led the Atlantic League with 32 saves in 64 relief appearances. The former Yankee struck out 51 batters while walking 18 and limiting opposing batters to a .250 average in 61.1 innings of work. In Game One of the North Division Playoffs, the 2005 North Division All-Star picked up his first win as a Duck after hurling a perfect ninth inning.

"We are very proud of these four guys," said Ducks general manager Michael Hirsch. "They put together exceptional seasons and led us to the post season for the second straight year."

For more on the Ducks, visit www.liducks.com.

dpghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15169041477883381198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8804762.post-1128608203036837422005-10-06T10:10:00.000-04:002005-10-06T10:16:43.073-04:00Long Island Association Events in OctoberVisit www.longislandassociation.org to register online or call 631.493.3036 for more information on any event.

Top Talent Seminar – Retaining & Developing Your Best Employees
Wednesday, October 19
LIA Headquarters, 300 Broadhollow Road, Ste 110W, Melville
8:30 a.m. Registration / 9:00 a.m. seminar

This seminar is calling all managers and executives who rely on the talent of those they manage. The film will be followed by a question and answer session with the two guest stars. For more information, visit www.cinemaartscentre.org.

About The Film:
"Everything is Illuminated," written/directed by Liev Schreiber and starring Leskin, Lauret and Elijah Wood, is based on the critically-acclaimed novel by Jonathan Safran Foer. The film tells the story of a young man's quest to find the woman who saved his grandfather in a small Ukrainian town that was wiped off the map by the Nazi invasion.

The journey begins as a comic nightmare -- with an eccentric trio of paid "expert" guides sorely lacking in expertise: a cranky grandfather who insists on bringing his unruly seeing-eye dog to help him drive and his over-enthusiastic grandson, whose fractured command of English, passion for retro American pop culture, and inability to shut up, threaten to make the worst of every situation. What starts out as a journey to piece together one family's story under the most absurd circumstances turns into a surprisingly meaningful journey with a powerful series of revelations -- the importance of remembrance, the perilous nature of secrets, the legacy of the Holocaust, the meaning of friendship, and, most importantly, love. In his directorial debut, acclaimed actor Liev Schreiber has crafted a fascinating and mesmerizing film.

dpghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15169041477883381198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8804762.post-1128608420274249532005-10-06T10:00:00.000-04:002005-10-06T10:20:20.276-04:00Morton's Celebrates National Chocolate Day All Month LongMorton's (777 Northern Boulevard in Great Neck) is celebrating National Chocolate Day throughout the entire month of October by offering $5 chocolate martinis Monday through Friday at the bar from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. During this happy hour, bar guests will also receive complimentary mini steak sandwiches. Frequently eating dinner with your children has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of substance abuse in half! Isn't it worth a try?

I encourage all families on Long Island to take part in this national dinner event. Understandably, not every family has time to cook a meal at dinner time. So, just this once, I will overlook any of you that decide to participate with a take out or restaurant meal. In this case, any meal counts as long as you spend it with your family!

If you would like more information about this great family activity, please click here. The Mattituck winery will donate a percentage of the proceeds from a special commemorative wine to September's Mission Foundation, a non-profit organization established to support the development of a memorial park on the former World Trade Center site. This is the second year that Lieb Cellars has produced the September's Mission Merlot. Last year, public response was tremendous and the commemorative wine sold out.

In honor of the fourth anniversary of 9/11, Lieb Cellars has produced another 6,480 bottles of the special 2003 Merlot, which it will sell at the winery and offer for resale to restaurants and wine shops in New York State. Winery owners Mark and Kathy Lieb expect to raise about $6,000 for the foundation. Like most Americans, they were deeply affected by the tragedy. They had both worked on Wall Street for many years prior to 9/11, and, sadly, lost friends and former colleagues in the WTC attacks.

"We wanted to contribute in our own way to ensure that the tragic events of 9/11 are never forgotten," said Mr. Lieb. "The commemorative wine gives our winery, as well as restaurants and individuals, the opportunity to participate in the annual observance and to support September's Mission Foundation. Through the ages, wine has had religious and ceremonial significance, so it is fitting that it play a role in the annual remembrance of 9/11," he added. "We hope wine shops, restaurants and consumers will join us, as so many did last year, in honoring the memory of those who lost their lives and help support September's Mission."

Monica Iken, who founded September's Mission Foundation after losing her husband Michael in the 9/11 tragedy, said she deeply appreciates the donation. "Whoever purchases this special wine will not only be remembering the heroes and innocent victims of that terrible tragedy, but will be supporting our efforts to develop programs at the future memorial site, as well as the 9/11 'Living Memorial,' an internet-based web portal project that will be accessible to everyone."

The commemorative wine is a 2003 Merlot made of grapes grown on the North Fork. This is a new youth soccer program from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, US Youth Soccer and the National Soccer Team Players Association. The program is designed to help young people improve their soccer skills and learn the value of community service by raising funds for cancer research.

The program takes place over a ten-day period in October and November. Players ask family, friends and neighbors to sponsor them for ten days. Sponsors contribute a specific amount for each time the player touches the soccer ball. The player’s goal is 200 touches per day, totaling 2,000 touches.

According to Brandon Wilmoth, the Society's National Soccer Manager, "This is a win-win situation for clubs and players. Players will not only benefit from this program by improving their soccer skills, but there are also incentives provided for the players, coaches and club for their participation."

Teams may register at www.soccerkicksforcancer.org. The fall registration deadline is October 10, 2005.

For more information on Soccer Kicks for Cancer and other programs and services available at the Long Island Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, call 631.752.8500, ext. 37.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world's largest private organization concerned solely with funding research towards cures for blood-related cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. As a result of ongoing research, overall survival rates for leukemia have tripled in the last 39 years. The Society is dedicated to being one of the top-rated voluntary health agencies in terms of dollars that directly fund the mission: nearly 76% of the society's expenditures are directed to research, patient and community services, advocacy, and education.
