Recently a new, conceptually simple methodology called the “ordered-axis plot” approach was introduced for the purpose of comparing patterns of diversity in a common morphospace. This technique involves a combination of principal components analysis (PCA) and linear regression. Given the common use of these statistics the potential for the widespread use of the ordered axis approach is high. However, there are a number of drawbacks to this approach, most notably that lineages with the greatest amount of variance will largely bias interpretations from analyses involving a common morphospace. Here the aspects of diversity parallel to PC1 are highlighted with a red arrow for each group of interest. Note that the length of most variable group (pink) is parallel to PC1 because it has the greatest influence over the determination of PC1 in this common morphospace. Other less variable groups (blue, green) have less influence over the trajectory of PC1, but still possess variation that lies parallel to PC1. However the greatest axis of variation within these less variable groups may lie along a vector that differs from PC1. Además revisan  4 aplicaciones de  esta herramienta:  Filogeografía con datos  de  MG,  asimetría como una medida de heterogeneidad ambiental o neutralidad en los caracteres, morfogénesis y deformación morfológica en fósiles. The 2010 conference will particularly focus on giving voice to and generating closer links with archaeozoologists based in Central/Eastern Europe and Asia, without neglecting Latin America, where the previous ICAZ Conference took place;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;promote the archaeozoological study of hunter-gatherers societies.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;b&gt;Scientific Session on Geometric Morphometrics&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Morphometrics, which study variations and changes in the form (size and shape) of an organism or an object, is one of the main techniques used in archaeozoology to extract biological information from animal remains. Morphometric technics in archaeozoology have mainly relied on combined uni/multivariate statistics and quantitative morphology based on linear measurements. Although useful, traditional morphometrics face several limitations (size correction, absence of homology in the linear distance, difficulty to capture geometry of complex shape, absence of graphical representation of shape changes) and prevent the addressing of old research questions and therefore the meeting of new challenges in bioarchaeology.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The so called “revolution” of Geometric Morphometrics in Biological science and Physical Anthropology during the 90’s has now addressed these issues by providing a new statistical theory to not only capture and retain the geometry of an object throughout the analyses but also to allow the visualization of its changes. Entre éstos, Megaluracarus, ya que está constituido por alrededor de 260 especies, de las cuáles 190 se distribuyen en América (Rosso de Ferradás y Hernández, 2005; Cook, 1980; Cramer y Cook, 1992). En México, se han registrado 18 especies de dicho subgénero (Cook, 1980; Cramer y Cook, 1992; Rivas y Cramer, 1998), varias de ellas cohabitando en el mismo cuerpo de agua, en estos casos, se ha observado que las diferencias morfológicas entre los machos de algunas especies son casi graduales (obs. pers.).&lt;br /&gt;En este sentido, los análisis morfométricos son una herramienta muy útil ya que permiten detectar diferencias sutiles entre las especies. Dichas distinciones suelen ser factibles de interpretar biológicamente, lo cual puede incrementar la precisión y resolución de posteriores análisis filogenéticos y faunísticos a gran escala (Budd &lt;i&gt;et al.&lt;/i&gt;, 1994; Cazorla y Acosta, 2003; Grobler &lt;i&gt;et al.&lt;/i&gt;, 2006; Reuschel y Shubart, 2006).&lt;br /&gt;Este proyecto constituye el primer análisis morfométrico de la forma del cuerpo en un grupo de ácaros dulceacuícolas. Se espera que los resultados permitan elaborar hipótesis sobre distintos aspectos de su biología, como su diversidad y su distribución. Se ha revisado la bibliografía referente a la descripción de las especies del género &lt;i&gt;Arrenurus&lt;/i&gt;. Preliminarmente, se han encontrado 260 especies del subgénero &lt;i&gt;Megaluracarus&lt;/i&gt; descritas a nivel mundial, de las cuales 191 se han descrito para el continente americano. Para 96 de éstas especies, se ha obtenido la imagen digitalizada de la vista dorsal del cuerpo de los machos, escaneada a partir de las descripciones originales (Fig. 1). Las principales diferencias en la forma del cuerpo o idiosoma de los machos de &lt;i&gt;Megaluracarus&lt;/i&gt;, se observan en la parte posterior o cauda: puede ser corta o larga, redonda o angulosa, o presentar protuberancias; la parte anterior del cuerpo a veces puede presentar proyecciones semejantes a cuernos o bien ser redondeada. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j_GHh8y3sH4/SihXjWIs9CI/AAAAAAAAAAw/VbcgZVMDUC0/s1600-h/fig+1.bmp"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px; display: block; height: 183px; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343617222624212002" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j_GHh8y3sH4/SihXjWIs9CI/AAAAAAAAAAw/VbcgZVMDUC0/s320/fig+1.bmp" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;Fig 1. a Vista dorsal, y b) vista lateral del macho de &lt;/span&gt;&lt;i style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;Arrenurus (Megaluracarus) colitus&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;,&lt;br /&gt;la flecha señala la cauda.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;La idea básica de realizar esta exploración de la forma, es confirmar, si como se ha observado a simple vista, existen especies que comparten una forma básica, es decir, si se conforman grupos de formas; y por otra parte tratar de dilucidar si dichas formas reflejan algún tipo de patrón biológico (p. ej. a nivel biogeográfico, ecológico o evolutivo). &lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;Según la forma de la parte anterior del idiosoma y el largo y forma de la cauda, las 96 especies se repartieron en seis diferentes grupos. La primera parte de este proyecto consiste en hacer un análisis morfométrico prospectivo de cuatro grupos de especies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Una dificultad a resolver es que el contorno corporal en vista dorsal no presenta marcas que puedan considerarse homólogas, por lo que se esta experimentando con la definicion de seudomarcas (Fig. 2) utilizando MakeFan (Integrated Morphometric Package, IMP). Se digitalizaron las coordenadas "x,y" de 44 seudomarcas con TPSDig. Las configuraciones de seudomarcas de cada especie fueron alineadas con la superimposición Procustes (PS) en CoordGen (IMP). Las semimarcas deben ser alineadas a lo largo de sus curvas parciales respectivas, para esto se utilizó Semiland6 (IMP). Para observar las tendencias generales en la variación de la forma del idiosoma en vista dorsal de &lt;i&gt;Megaluracarus&lt;/i&gt;, los datos fueron analizados con PCAGen6 (IMP). Para discriminar entre sí a los cuatro grupos analizados, se utilizó CVAGen6 (IMP). Deformación en la Componente 2.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Considero que las pseudomarcas, en el caso de la forma de Megaluracarus, son una técnica bastante útil, ya que caracterizan bastante bien el contorno del cuerpo, y permiten cumplir con el objetivo central del trabajo que es hacer una primera exploración de la forma. Con respecto al número de marcas, parecen ser suficientes para caracterizar la forma, ya que se concentran principalmente en la parte posterior del cuerpo de los ácaros o cauda, que es la que varía con mayor frecuencia entre las especies.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Personalmente considero que la morfometría geométrica es un campo apasionante. El poder examinar a los organismos de esta manera, y no estar limitados a las simples mediciones, da la posibilidad de responder preguntas que antes serían inimaginables. A pesar de lo difícil que puede parecer la metodología a primera vista, al entenderla y aplicarla, se vuelve relativamente sencillo seguir cada paso y explicar y discutir los resultados. Lleva a cabo su trabajo de tesis en el laboratorio de ecología marina y en la colección de peces del CIBNOR.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Su trabajo de tesis trata el estudio de la variación ecomorfológica y la filogenia de la familia Pomacentridae en el Pacífico Oriental. For its power it has been considered a 'revolution' in the field of morphometrics. The number of scientific papers using geometric morphometrics has increased exponentially over the last couple of decades. Geometric morphometric analyses have been successfully performed in a variety of disciplines ranging from taxonomy, palaeontology and evodevo to forensics, ergonomics and archaeology.&lt;br /&gt;A short course in geometric morphometrics will be held at Turin University from August 31st to September 2nd 2009, immediately after the end of the ESEB 2009 meeting. The workshop will cover both introductory and more advanced topics. Que opinan? Realmente es la manera de revelar la información de las diferencias evolutivas entre linajes? Que otras alternativas existen?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mi preferencia es tradicional: reconstruir la serie transformacional  optimizando los cambios de estados en el cladograma. El diagnostico de los estados por supuesto puede ser referido a un espacio morfometrico.
