The Groom is the son of good friends of ours. We (the parents) all started work as interns around the same time. We've played on softball teams together (well the guys anyway) and we've had season tickets to University of Maryland football for over 20 years. The Groom, in recent years, has been coming to more of the games then his Mom. Luckily that wasn't the case yesterday for our Saturday morning practice. It was a bit muggy, but only in the low 70s. We had a good turn out and the Men took out an 8+ plus three 4+s. I stroked one of the 4+s, moving back to port rowing for at least one practice anyway.Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-72233848372665651162008-07-18T12:23:00.004-05:002008-07-20T09:06:42.411-05:00Commute from HellI cover a lot of miles in my daily commuting. 160 miles a day on those days when I have to actually go into the office. Due to the distance, I take semi-public transportation - I'm in a vanpool. A company owns the vans and we do the driving. The vans are not new, which is an understatement. They all seem to have close to or over 200,000 miles on them. They look good, but they do have some mileageFrankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-10975880608839505602008-07-13T21:36:00.008-05:002008-07-20T09:06:05.160-05:00Capital Sprints 2008 and Becoming A Federal MarshallThis weekend was our first race of the season. We loaded up our boat trailer and traveled a short distance up I-95/I-395 to the Anacostia waterfront in the shadow of the new National's ballpark to compete in the Capital Sprints hosted by the Capital Rowing Club. We used this race as a tune up for the Diamond State Master's Regatta in two weeks. First up is a picture looking straight down into a cup of Irish Coffee as prepared at Tigin's. Very artistic.
The Donald is also coming to Stamford with a new Trump Tower. Units now selling.
All around Stamford are these statues. When you catch them out of the corner of your eye you think they are real. We were scheduled to take in the Round Hill Highland Games in Norwalk. Matt checked the website and discovered yet again that dogs were not allowed. Ann volunteered to stay at daughter#1's apartment while the rest of us headed to the games. We all felt really bad that she didn't get to come with us.
When we arrived at the park, Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-702214224867238022008-07-07T21:10:00.011-05:002008-07-09T15:23:57.418-05:00Stamford, Part IIHere is the little bugger that basically dominated the the weekend. Our weekend revolved around where we could take her and where we could not. She's cute, but she was a royal pain with the whining whenever Ann wasn't around.
The whole weekend forecast called for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Luckily we managed to avoid them all. Friday, the 4th, Daughter#1 and her now fiance, took us Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-71182541189717282192008-07-07T14:30:00.005-05:002008-07-07T15:19:23.734-05:00She's Engaged!I hope everyone had a fun filled 4th of July weekend. For us the 4th meant heading to Stamford, CT to visit Daughter#1. She has just moved into a new apartment and wanted us to see it. Plus we were way over due for a visit anyway. Daughter#2 decided a visit would be nice and drove up with us. Also making the trip was our dog Rosie, a move that we would regret mightily as the weekend wore on. Friday I was up bright and early and out on the water by 7:00AM. It wasn't hot yet, in the low 70s, but it was very humid. I headed up river toward Ryan's Dam. The water was great - nice and flat. The downside was I was still pretty sore from Thursday evening practice. For that practice I was in a double something I'veFrankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-26167156687597442472008-06-26T13:41:00.001-05:002008-06-30T09:46:00.808-05:00Happy Birthday!Yesterday was Daughter#1's birthday so I want to wish her a Happy Birthday! She recently moved into a new apartment, which we will see shortly as we travel foolishly over the 4th of July weekend to CT. Nothing like battling NJ beach traffic on the NJ Turnpike over the high weekend of the summer. Ann and I gave her a digital camera for her birthday. This is about the fifth camera she's owned. A lot of what I did is what I do almost every weekend. While not an exciting lifestyle, it works for me. Saturday morning was rowing practice. It's become clear that our Coach has already split us up into a plus 50 boat and a plus 40 boat (numbers refer to average age of the rowers in the boat). I'm ok with that. In Masters rowing it's important to Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-26405216848916142762008-06-18T14:41:00.003-05:002008-06-18T15:53:54.173-05:00Missed PracticeI missed practice last night, which was very disappointing. The weather was beautiful, low 70s, and I was looking forward to it, especially since Saturday's practice went so well. When I come from my place of business, I have a very small window to make it to practice on time. Most of the time I'm pulling into the marina parking lot right when practice is suppose to beginning. It was not that much different than most Sunday's with the exception there were presents! As we do on most weekends, Ann and I arose early to go for a bike ride on the W&OD Trail. When I mean early, I mean like 6:00 in the morning. Even getting up that early by the time we did everything we needed to do before we headed out, we didn't actually leave the house Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-69651869975650097932008-06-16T14:01:00.003-05:002008-06-16T14:32:44.028-05:00My DadI hope Dad's everywhere had a wonderful Father's Day. I know I did. I don't want to go into much detail right now since I have some pictures to share, but I haven't uploaded them yet. It wasn't way different than many of my Sunday's in that I went for a bike ride, visited The Son, and later The Son dropped by for steaks and corn on the cob and to exchange gifts and cards. So a good time.

I would say spring-like, but its a tad warm to be truly springlike.
Practice on Tuesday ended about twenty minutes early as thunder and lightening started lighting up the sky west of us. Luckily we weren't far from the cove where the boathouse is located and Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-19744636115652833492008-06-10T08:03:00.005-05:002008-06-10T09:18:31.278-05:00Biking and SoccerThe weather continues to be sweltering and pretty miserable overall. It should be an interesting practice this evening in the heat and humidity.
In order to get in a bike ride and to beat the heat, on Sunday I got up at 6:00AM, got the laundry started and loaded up my bike in the minivan. Our powerpack/air compressor has given up the ghost, apparently and I haven't been able to put any air Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-1501078590519054932008-06-07T19:48:00.005-05:002008-06-07T21:31:39.833-05:00A Hot WeekendSummer has descended with a vengeance. Temperature's soared into the 90s and combined with the high humidity, the heat index is well over 100. Thank god for air conditioning.
Friday was actually a nice day. Sunny and warm, but not hot. I had to work (from home), but I managed to get over to Sandy Run for a row. I got in 7 miles before returning home and work. There were a few tornadoes in the area but none closer than about 20 miles from us. The storm did leave a mess in its wake as these pictures show.
After the first line of storms roared through the area around 2:30, an e-mail went out cancelling the rowing camp practice for that evening.Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-57404161677843915142008-06-01T17:21:00.005-05:002008-06-01T21:53:06.965-05:00Now I Can See...No WaitUp until I was about 40, I had nearly perfect vision. But my father's side of the family has this curse. When you turn 40 your eye sight goes to hell and your blood pressure soars. Of course the blood pressure could be related to my kids so who knows. Anyway, I've been wearing glasses for quite some time now. I almost can't remember a time when I didn't. I hope you are too. Its been a wonderful start to summer. So far we have eaten seafood by the riverside.
Played the game of LIFE. Something I haven't done since I was about 12.
And we've gone to the new National's Park and watched the Nationals win 7-6 in the bottom of the 9th.
And we still have Ann's birthday to celebrate tomorrow. Just a quick updateFrankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-10131400102364448432008-05-23T11:00:00.003-05:002008-05-23T11:55:47.650-05:00Just the Facts
The weather today is bright and sunny and it's killing me to have to be inside and actually be working. Thank goodness this is my "short" day. As with most work weeks, it has been pretty much business as usual. Get up very early, go to work, come home, eat, watch some TV go to bed early. Not exactly exciting stuff to share. I'll just throw at some random facts from my past and wait for the Frankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213462654213512044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785186196565494180.post-1279956169474969942008-05-18T20:07:00.006-05:002008-05-19T22:37:30.398-05:00Ride and Row AgainSo Saturday turned out to be a really nice day here in Virginia so Ann and I decided to take advantage of the day with a bike ride. Normally we try to get away as early as possible, but while the day dawned nice and sunny it was a bit chilly. We waited a while for it to warm up before we headed off to the trail. We left home around 9:00 and we were on the trail by 9:45. Starting last Thursday through last weekend we got 8 inches of rain. Last night and today we got another inch and a half. The boathouse I row from experienced some flooding as the Occoquan spilled from its banks. Some of the locker space located under the boathouse flooded submerging some ergs located there. Here it was on the low key side. Now that the kids are grown and out on their own, it doesn't have quite the punch and excitement level as when they were younger. Which is totally understandable since the Daughters are scattered to the winds and weren't able to be here. The Son more than made up for it though. Our first was more or less rained out, but we had beautiful weather this time. Ann bailed on going on our usual Sunday morning bike ride so the morning was given over to doing laundry and grocery shopping. After a quick lunch,I headed down to the boathouse.
