Distribution: All World-wide in tropical and subtropical sea.
General: The great sweaty barracuda is the largest of twentytwo barracuda species that are all over the world distributed.
Fishing for Barracuda: Most barracuda are probably caught while trolling for other species and are unwanted by most fishermen who have their sights set on something grander. As with other species of the same size, trolling leaves a lot to be desired in how well the fish can fight.
Casting to barracuda with live or artificial baits on twelve to fifteen pound test line is an awesome sport. Their surface strike is explosive, their jumping acrobats are chaotic and their runs are strong and unpredictable. They are about the smartest fish that I know of. They are always watching you, in the water or out. They may lay under your boat and wait, striking only the better fish like a snapper or mackerel, letting the jacks and grunts go by.
I use live sardines and herring free lining them out on a 5/0 hook and a 6" light wire leader. Sometimes they will only hit the bait on the first run or I may need to take the wire leader off to get them started. My favorite way to fish them is with a tube lure when the water is flat calm and you can sight fish them. I use bright pink or green and retrieve the lure as fast as I can. They will strike with a roar and an explosion of water you seldom see. In this area, you can find barracuda all over the Gulf but they stack up in large numbers over the artificial reefs in 40 to 60 feet of water for most of the summer. The average size is about 15 to 20 pounds but it is not uncommon to get a 30 pounder.
People do eat them here and call them "Poor Man's Grouper". In some areas they can be poisonous to eat due to Ciguatera fish poison but we don't seem to have that in this area. I don't eat them because I don't like the smell from their slime when they are put in the fish box. I must also admit that the word "poisonous" used in any context with my food is a deterrent to my appetite.

Caratterizzato dalla forma allungata e dal muso appuntito, con la mascella inferiore prominente, il barracuda ha una colorazione grigio-bluastra-argentea dorsalmente e marrone ventralmente con delle macchie e delle bande nere.
Questa colorazione è ottimale per mimetizzarsi. I maschi e le femmine sono simili e difficilmente distinguibili.
Il barracuda sudato possiede una larga bocca con denti allungati ed aguzzi, presenti anche sul palato, indispensabili per afferrare la preda e che gli conferiscono inoltre un aspetto decisamente minaccioso.
Questo poderoso pesce può raggiungere i 2 m e pesa circa 40 kg.Le pinne dorsali sono 2, molto distanziate tra loro e la caudale è nettamente incisa e appuntita; sono poco sviluppate le pinne ventrali e pettorali.
E' un pesce predatore voracissimo, e si ciba di pesci, calamari e crostacei. Grazie alla poderosa mascella e dentatura è in grado di spezzare un pesce in un sol colpo. La strategia di caccia può richiedere lunghe attese oppure inseguimenti veloci.
Il barracuda sudato nuota restando sempre all'erta e facendo affidamento per lo più sulla vista acutissima. Il suo habitat è costituito da fondali sabbiosi a volte anche vicini alla costa, fino a 100 m. di profondità.
Il barracuda sudato adulto conduce una vita solitaria soprattutto di notte; durante il giorno si possono scorgere banchi di giovani ed adulti. Forse il fatto di vivere in gruppo di giorno è strategico per proteggersi da eventuali predatori e per cacciare meglio.
Viene normalmente associato a mari tropicali, ma è in realtà abbastanza frequente nel Mediterraneo.Ci sono diverse specie: Sphyraena borealis, che vive dalle Bermuda fino al golfo del Messico, è lungo circa 45 cm. Il grande barracuda sudato (Sphyraena argentea o Sphyraena barracuda) vive nelle acque tropicali dell'Atlantico e nel Pacifico occidentale e arriva a misurare 180 cm.
Il barracuda sudato californiano, le cui carni sono molto pregiate, sverna in Messico, ma all'inizio della stagione riproduttiva, in aprile, si sposta a nord verso acque più temperate dove le sue larve si nutrono di plancton. Nel mar Mediterraneo sono presenti Sphyraena picuda e sfirena o luccio marino (Sphyraena sphyraena), quest'ultimo anche in Italia.
Non si sa molto sulla riproduzione del barracuda sudato. C'è una teoria secondo cui si accoppia in primavera seguendo le fasi della luna, mentre un'altra ipotesi lo vede riprodursi tutto l’anno, ad eccezione dei periodi più freddi. Avvenuta la fecondazione, le uova sono lasciate al loro destino in balia della corrente. Le larve ricercano ambienti tranquilli e ricchi di alimenti come le foci; successivamente si portano in profondità e, raggiunti i 5 cm di lunghezza, lasciano definitivamente le acque dell’estuario per l’oceano aperto in prossimità della barriera corallina. Fondamentale per il barracuda sudato è la disponibilità di acqua pulita.
Nonostante la cattiva fama, i barracuda sudato non attaccano l’uomo. Gli sporadici incidenti occorsi a bagnanti e subacquei sono spesso dovuti a provocazioni o a comportamenti scorretti dell’uomo stesso: la maggior parte delle volte questo pesce attacca perché si sente provocato.
Una curiosità: ha una passione per il luccichio dei gioielli dei turisti degli alberghi, hotel e resort di Krabi Thailandia !

Il barracuda sudato era là.
Una pescata esotica un po' datata : pesca tropicale , Autore: Giorgio
Quella volta fu un long tail a tentarmi; una piccola barca robusta, modello Libeccio, costruttore Wit; il motore, da camion flottante, era un Toyota di 45 HP.
Decisi l'acquisto ed il cambio di tipo di pesca al barracuda sudato, che giungeva per terzo (dapprima era stata acqua dolce, poi il mare da riva) come fosse stabilito da tempo, non avrei più insidiato spigole, muggini e orate o gronchi da riva, ora avevo una barca e potevo farcela col barracuda, sudato o meno!
Ora sono alla quinta, di barca, centinaia di "uscite", qualche bella pescata... ormai sempre più rara.
Avrei dovuto tenere un diario dei barracuda, ma il tempo era poco ed io sudato, c'era il lavoro e quant'altro, ma d'ora in avanti, se trovo lettori, scriverò ogni volta che prendo qualcosa, una sola promessa, cercherò di non allargar troppo le braccia sudate...
Dopo il dovuto preambolo, non avendo "pescate" valide in questi giorni, chè le seppie sembrano sparite, descrivo una pescata esotica e tropicale però un po' datata e sudato ... 1991 .

Mi trovavo in Tailandia per lavoro, esattamente a Krabi.
Era la stagione delle piogge, i giorni che sarei restato non erano molti ed avevo paura, essendo il golfo non proprio calmo, di non riuscire ad organizzare la pescata al barracuda.
Al villaggio dei pescatori l'anziano che decideva tutto continuava a rinviare, il mio stentato inglese non mi aiutava nel perorare l'"uscita.".
Miscredente come sono, riuscii a convincerlo sbiascicando un "Sawadee krap mak mak"....... ed aggiungendo cinquemila Baht al pattuito.
Si decise la barca, una grande slanciatissima e variopinta long tile, dalle mura robustissime, un legno simile al mogano, motore fuoribordo flottante diesel 55 HP !
Attesa la giusta marea, lì il mare si ritira per centinaia di metri, finalmente si esce,.
Siamo in tre: il marinaio, io ed un bambino di cui inizialmente non riesco a giustificare la presenza, specie con quel mare!
Presto chiarito, lui è la nostra "pompa di sentina", la calafatura lascia un pò a desiderare, imbarchiamo acqua, ma quel guscio di noce di cocco ne sgotta abbastanza.
Fatti i debiti scongiuri, dovendo raggiungere due isolette a qualche miglia dalla costa, calo in mare una lenza con un "cucchiaino" di venti centimetri, ma vuoi che la velocità è troppa, non c'era verso di farlo andare più piano, vuoi che l'acqua è troppo torbida non abboccano né Barracuda sudati né altri predatori della cui presenza sono certo.
Comincio ad avere brutti presentimenti, il mare sembra sempre più agitarsi, ma ormai terra ferma ed isole sono alla stessa distanza! Improvvisamente nel cavo di un'onda, a rasserenarmi, interviene la visione di un vecchio pescatore.
Sta sdraiato in una piccola canoa, fatta di un unico tronco svuotato, gli passiamo abbastanza vicino che riesco a distinguere la lenza che tiene in mano: un grosso cordino verde di nailon intrecciato; il suo piede che sporge fuori, funge da canna, il filo passa tra alluce e dito successivo ....boo! se lui è diventato vecchio posso stare tranquillo.
Finalmente arriviamo tra le due isolette, cerchiamo con un rudimentale ecoscandaglio, la profondità giusta 25 mt. circa, monto due canne, una per me una per il marinaio, per esca abbiamo solo dei pesci che sembrano grossi sardoni, ne faccio dei filetti ed innesco su ami 03 e mono-filo del 50.
Il marinaio si lamenta perché, dice, la lenza è troppo sottile, provo, sempre con i problemi legati alla lingua, a spiegargli la funzione della frizione ma non c'è verso!
La prima abboccata è per lui, il barracuda sudato!
Dapprima la frizione è troppo lenta e sbobina rapidamente metà del mulinello, poi, con il pesce probabilmente già in tana, lui prende il nailon in mano, lo forza, e rompe alla girella.
Sono passati pochi minuti ed è la mia volta, ho stretto la frizione quel tanto che mi consente di staccare il pesce dal fondale che so essere roccioso, faccio rapidamente recuperare l'altra canna e preparare il coppo, lentamente, ma sento che cede, non ha la violenta reazione del tonno, ma combatte abbastanza, cinque minuti e, dopo una" coppata " a vuoto, un bell'esemplare di barracuda umido di 26 kg circa viene a bordo!
Ci rimettiamo in pesca, ma abbiamo perso il fondale.
Cominciano ad abboccare, con mio grande stupore, dei grossi Pesce gatto, il marinaio mi urla di fare attenzione, ma non ce n'è bisogno conosco già le dolorose punture di quello che per noi è un "regalo" dello zio Tom, ne peschiamo quattro di circa un kg, a me piacciono, trovo le loro carni simili alle anguille, non hanno però incontrato il gusto della tavolata, di prammatica, che è seguita alla pescata, in quanto tutti il barracuda sudato preferivano!

Ancora la paura dello tsunami.
A krabi ancora una volta la paura dell'onda devastante è arrivata nella notte.
Fortunatamente solo la paura, in quanto l'allarme è rientrato in poche ore e nulla alla fine è successo, nessuna onda è arrivata questa volta.

I turisti hanno continuato tranquillamente a godere i loro pacchetti vacanze nelle località di Krabi ed Ao Nang e tutta la Thailandia è tornata subito nella normalità.

Dear friends and collaborators.

We are living a whole situation absolutely not easy but around us there is now who has difficult life and dramatic days much more then us.

In these sad moments, to worsen anymore the state of the things it is intervened the irresponsible choices ( and myopic ) of the majority of the hotels that since the evening of the 26 December has dismissed in the totally theirs Staff, waiting the return of the customers.

Then now hundreds of persons workings in this area so hard stricken has lost theirs already small salary, and for an indefinite time.

Emerald Garden Resort has chosen to not dismiss anybody of his 70 collaborators and to maintain the whole actual staff active and completely remunerated.

Certanly this will put us in a not easy situation, but we cannot to close the eyes and to fake to don't see, and something must be done for this people.

Together with them we have decided to do something for who has suffered the last events, that have saved up from the so harshly destructions and from the mournings the area of Krabi, but not from the hard economic consequences.

We have therefore contacted the authorities of the area of Kao Lak and already taken vision of a good intervention of assistance offered them by numerous National Organizations, fully working and well organized.

The main help and assistance therefore doesn't miss.

They have proposed us to furnish milk for the children, provisions and other kinds of first necessities, which can be useful and comfortable in that situation and to assuage the suffering of those persons so heavily damaged.

Our staff has therefore self taxing their salary getting a small sum that we have doubled immediately and with which we are buying those provisions that will deliver directly to those unlucky populations.

As you can also imagine, all of you can do something, can also give his own small contribution to these so kind and friendly suffering persons so hit by the events; send them the tourists again!

Let's put in work soon the machine again, let's start again the small boat for the enchanting islands as soon as possible!

That Krabi and Ao Nang have remained perfectly always efficient !

Let's relight the economy of this area in the briefest possible time and we will have given the better contribution to the children of the destroyed villages and to those mothers crying in tears that the hypocrisy of the media still showing us so much, and who knows for how long time again.

- Cari amici e collaboratori.
Stiamo vivendo tutti una situazione tutt'altro che facile ma attorno a noi ora, c'è chi vive momenti ben più difficili e drammatici.
In questi momenti tristi, a peggiorare ancor più lo stato delle cose sono intervenute le scelte irresponsabili (e miopi)della maggioranza degli alberghi che fin dalla sera del 26 dicembre hanno licenziato in massa i dipendenti in attesa del ritorno dei clienti.
Quindi ora centinaia di residenti in quest'area così colpita hanno di colpo perso il loro già esiguo salario, ed a tempo indeterminato.
Emerald Garden Resort ha scelto di non licenziare nessuno dei suoi 70 collaboratori e di mantenere tutto l'attuale staff attivo e completamente retribuito ad oltranza.
Questo ci metterà in una situazione tutt'altro che facile, ma non si può chiudere gli occhi e fingere di non vedere e qualcosa deve essere fatto per questa gente.
Assieme a loro abbiamo poi deciso di fare qualcosa per chi ha subito così duramente gli ultimi avvenimenti, che hanno risparmiato dalle distruzioni e dai lutti l'area di Krabi, ma non dalle dure conseguenze economiche.
Abbiamo quindi contattato le autorità dell'area di Kao Lak e preso visione di un ottimo intervento di assistenza già in essere ed offerto da numerose organizzazioni nazionali, efficenti e ben organizzate.
L'essenziale quindi non manca.
Ci hanno proposto di fornire loro latte per i bambini, vettovaglie ed altri generi non di prima necessità, ma che possono essere utili e di conforto in quella situazione ed alleviare la sofferenza di quelle persone così provate.
Il nostro staff ha quindi provveduto ad autotassare il loro salario racimolando così una piccola somma che abbiamo immediatamente raddoppiato e con la quale stiamo acquistando detti generi che consegneremo direttamente in loco a quelle sfortunate popolazioni.
Come potete immaginare anche voi, ognuno di voi può fare qualcosa, può dare il suo piccolo contributo a queste meravigliose persone così gentili e cordiali anche nella sofferenza e così provate dagli eventi; rimandate loro i turisti !
Rimettiamo in moto la macchina, rifacciamo partire le barchette per le incantevoli isole al più presto !
Che Krabi ed Ao Nang sono sempre rimaste perfettamente efficenti !
Riaccendiamo l'economia di quest'area nel più breve tempo possibile ed avremo dato il miglior contributo ai bambini dei villaggi distrutti ed a quelle madri in lacrime che l'ipocrisia dei media ci propina a piene mani, e chissà per quanto tempo ancora .

Introduction
Krabi hotel is a southern province on Thailand's Andaman seaboard with perhaps the country's oldest history of continued settlement. After dating stone tools, ancient colored pictures, beads, pottery and skeletal remains found in the province's many cliffs and caves, it is thought that Krabi has been home to homo sapiens since the period 25,000 - 35,000 B.C. In recorded times it was called the 'Ban Thai Samor', and was one of twelve towns that used, before people were widely literate, the monkey for their standard. At that time,
c. 1200 A.D., Krabi was tributary to the Kingdom of Ligor, a city on the Kra Peninsula's east coast better known today as Nakhon Si Thammarat.
At the start of the Rattanakosin period, about 200 years ago, when the capital was finally settled at Bangkok, an elephant kraal was established in Krabi by order of Chao Phraya Nakorn (Noi), the governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat, which was by then a part of the Thai Kingdom. He sent his vizier, the Phra Palad, to oversee this task, which was to ensure a regular supply of elephants for the larger town. So followers many emigrated in the steps of the Phra Palad that soon Krabi had a large community in three different boroughs : Pakasai, Khlong Pon, and Pak Lao. In 1872, King Chulalongkorn graciously elevated these to town status, called Krabi, a word that preserves in its meaning the monkey symbolism of the old standard. The town's first governor was Luang Thep Sena, though it continued a while as a dependency of Nakhon Si Thammarat. This was changed in 1875, when Krabi was raised to a fourth-level town in the old system of Thai government. Administrators then reported directly to the central government in Bangkok, and Krabi's history as a unique entity separated from the other provinces, had begun.
During the present reign, the corps of civil servants, the merchants, and the population generally of Krabi and nearby provinces have together organized construction of a royal residence at Laem Hang Nak Cape for presentation to His Majesty the King. This lies thirty kilometers to the west of Krabi Town on the Andaman coast.

Krabi is divided into eight districts : Amphoe Muang (Krabi Town), Khao Panom, Khlong Thom, Plai Phraya, Ko Lanta, Ao Luk, and Lam Thap and, Nhua Khlong.

Krabi's estimated population, as of September 1999, is 344,610

Geography
Krabi's mountainous physical geography is broken by highlands and plains on the mainland.The provincial administration also covers more than 130 islands in the Andaman Sea. Natural forest cover is chiefly mangrove and Cassia trees. Krabi's sandy clay soil conditions are perfect for a variety of agricultural products, including rubber trees, palms, mangos, coconuts, and coffee. The Krabi River flows 5 kilometers through the city and falls into the Andaman at Tambon Pak Nam. There are other streams as well : the Khlong Pakasai, the Khlong Krabi Yai and the Khlong Krabi Noi in the province's highest range of mountains, the Khao Phanom Bencha.
Climate
Weather in Krabi is typically that of the tropical monsoon, providing the province with just two seasons, the hot season from January to April, and the rainy season from May to December. Monsoon winds, which change according to season, blow from the southeast, the southwest, and the northeast. Temperatures range between 16.9 and 37.3 degrees Celsius and the yearly rainfall averages 2,568.5 millimeters.

Festivals & Events
Andaman Sea Festival
This Festival takes place in November and celebrates the opening of the tourist season in Krabi. Water sport competitions, cultural shows, and good-natured fun are the schedule.

The Setting Adrift of the Chao Le Boats
Takes place on Ko Lanta during the full moon night of the sixth and eleventh lunar months. This is a religious rite performed by Sea Gypsies or "Chao Le" who gather on the beach near Ban Saladan Village. They dance their famous "rong ngeng" round the boats to be set adrift. Ceremonies feature singing and dancing. The reason for the fest is to bring prosperity and happiness to the participants.

Krabi is one of southern Thailand's most picturesque provinces. Midway between Phuket and Samui Island with white beaches and a stunning interior jungle.

The province is famous for its great natural park and island , characterised by the limestone "karst" scenery that can be seen throughout the entire area of krabi - ao nang.

The beach, 160 kilometres long, is full with bays, coves and outcrops of limestone mountains rising up from the sea, creating a fascinating seascape of magic tropical islands. Inside, the limestone mountains support a virgin biodiversity of plant and animal life.

Predominantly, it's an agricultural area, with sandy clay soil conditions producing rubber, palm oil, fruit, coconut and coffee. Rubber is the main cash crop grown with over 700,00 rai being under cultivation for this purpose. Palm oil comes in second, followed by coconuts.

However, with natural attractions like tropical islands, palm fringed beaches, forest waterfalls and caves attracting more and more sunseeking, adventure-bound tourists, Krabi has begun to earn a substantial income from its tourism industry.

The Coastline

It's estimated that the Krabi coastline contains over 200 limestone and jungle covered islands. Many are uninhabited outcrops rising from the sea with tiny patches of pristine white sandy beaches.

Much of Krabi's coastline is dotted with little coves and mangroves which form a unique eco-system and serve as a natural breeding ground for diverse aquatic life. Krabi's beaches are gradually opening out to tourism, although care is being taken to ensure management of the environment.

Development is being kept low rise with many hotels designed to blend in with the surroundings. There are few deckchairs and building directly on the beach has been kept to a minimum in most resort areas.

Fishing is widely carried out along the coastline and on most larger islands, and although traditional methods are still in use, modern trawling techniques are threatening numbers and the industry. Shrimp and cockle farming has been a high growth industry since the early 1990's, and there is also a flourishing grouper farming industry.

The Interior

Bordered by Phang Nga and Suratthani provinces, the interior of Krabi province presents a landscape of weirdly shaped limestone mountains, separated by flat valley floors with rubber and oil palm plantations.

There are many unusual cave systems in the rocks resulting in large caverns and tunnels. Some of the larger caverns have been made into Buddhist temples or shrines and others have revealed evidence of human habitation from over 43,000 years ago.

The Provincial Capital - Krabi Town

Krabi town, the provincial capital, is a charming little town which seems to be retaining its identity in the face of developing tourism. The river is still the hub with fishing boats and river taxis ferrying locals and visitors along the coast and to the islands.
