How to speed up Open Office 3.1 start up??

I use a lot Open Office Writer and every time I'm frustrated of application launch speed. Here is quick and excellent tutorial of how to speed up all OpenOffice apps:

Start Open Office Writer
From Tools menu choose Options
From the left menu choose Memory and check the box Enable systray Quickstarter (this will work for all OpenOffice suite)

Next choose Java and turn off Use a Java Runtime environment

GIMP will not be included in Ubuntu 10.04

GIMP was always been in the default Ubuntu OS installation. But from the 10.04 release, Gimp will not be included in the default Ubuntu. This decision was taken at the Ubuntu Developer Summit which is going on in Dallas, US so Ubuntu will follow Fedora example in the feature. (Fedora already drops GIMP from the 12th release).

But wait, don’t panic. GIMP will be in repositories so anyone who needed, can simply install it with “sudo apt-get install gimp”. This seams logic to me, because GIMP is very professional related and regular user will never use his potential and they generally use this application for very simple graphics operation (like cropping, resizing, watermark..) than can be done with other more basic softwares.

Google will show Chrome OS on thursday

Google is ready to show the Chrome OS progress with an event in Thursday at Google’s headquarters. After Google Chief Eric Schmidt resigned from Apple Board because conflict of interests - particularly about Android and the newly comer Chrome OS, the development of both Google OS’s is rapidly faster. In Thursday morning Google will give more technical information and some demos of the product that they will launch it next year.

Chrome OS is mainly targeting in netbook market, and is direct competitor is MS Windows XP and other open source Linux netbook OS like Moblin, Ubuntu netbook remix etc..

Knowing Google and the previous projects like Android and Chrome Browser, the next OS will be fast and more Web based – all integrated Google solutions (Google Mail, Apps, Picasa, Earth, Maps.…) and solution for Social Media, Web Browsing and Multimedia. Also, like Android, integrated simply and effective – animated user interface and easy online apps installation. The old XP on netbook is to slow (Windows 7 is even slower) and the good Moblin OS and Google Chrome OS will soon replace Windows-es from the netbook market so Linux will get more market share and more attention from big companies.

Nokia will acquire Palm

The rumors begin to circulate again that Nokia will acquire Palm. The similar story was presented on the net in September this year, but since then there are no concrete moves by any company. The last week speculation caused increased value of Palm shares for 8.1 % (to $ 12.38), but analysts are still skeptical about this feature business move.

Although the Palm is in a poor condition for a long time and Nokia doesn’t have a modern competitor for iPhone, Blackberry or Android devices, this move, besides the high takeover cost can be very smart. Palm is estimated on 2 billion U.S. dollars, and if Nokia makes this takeover, will get a modern and high quality linux based operating system (OS is selling mobile devices nowadays) with extensible features and easy API for new applications, that combined with the Nokia marketing machinery will increase sells of the company business and smart devices. So Nokia, in a very short time will achieve significant competitiveness in relation to the major players - RIM and Apple.

Youtube content in HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution

Google's YouTube service has announced soon availability of YouTube content in full HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution and the corresponding new player will be available to the users within a few days. The current YouTube content is 720p (1280 × 720px).

Some info about YouTube video content: YouTube original content is saved at resolution uploaded by their users and the company then recodes user content to the appropriate resolution for display. Now, for HD streaming, the company needs only to recode original uploaded user content in HD resolution. Youtube says that almost half of their content is already recoded for the new HD player.

Currently, only about 10% of the YouTube content is played in 720p high-definition. The reason for this is that many YouTube users are hardware or bandwidth limited for HD streaming. Also, there is a lot of uploaded content recorded with mobile devices so recoding that content in HD is not possible.

Windows 7 eats your laptop battery faster than XP

In Redmond, they probably have headache again and they cannot believe how Windows XP can't die even when Windows 7 is out. Instead of going in the stars – XP is still living in many computers and texts on the web, becouse Windows XP is still better in some segments than the new Windows 7.

The last example is the battery life laptop tests on the sites: jkOnTheRun, Liliputing and LaptopMag.

Three independent, separate web sites and the results are the same - depending on the tested laptop, Windows 7 is eating all the battery power for half hour or hour earlier than Windows XP. Although the Windows 7 look fancier, owners of laptops on the move and those who desperately need more battery hours probably still have a reason to "downgrade" to Windows XP...

Use your Ubuntu 9.10 background as Xsplash boot and login background

This script that I found on gnome-look.org is something that I've always wanted - the same booting background as my selected desktop wallpaper. And every time I've change the wallpaper I want changes to my booting and login background too. Finally I found that script and I will share this excellent tutorial with you ( there is no need for advanced Ubuntu users, beginners can do this too). You can follow the step by step tutorial or you can do the most steps with single terminal command just be sure to download and unzip the .py script from here in Home/Downloads folder (the default folder selected in Firefox)

1. First, download the .py script from here and unzip it in Home/Downloads folder

2. Single terminal Line: If you want step by step tutorial continue from step 3, or if you execute the next terminal line jump to step 9. Open terminal and copy/paste the next line:

sudo apt-get install imagemagick && sudo chmod -R a-w /usr/share/images/xsplash && cd ~/Downloads && mkdir ~/.scripts && mv wallpaper_daemon.py ~/.scripts && cd ~/.scripts && chmod +x wallpaper_daemon.py && ./wallpaper_daemon.py --install

3. Step by Step - Open your terminal – Applications/Accessories/Terminal and copy/paste the next line to install “imagemagick”, a program needed for this process (Ctrl+Shift+V to paste in terminal):

sudo apt-get install imagemagick

4. Change your xplash image writing permissions so the selected backgrounds can be adjusted automatically – open terminal and copy/paste the next line:

sudo chmod -R a-w /usr/share/images/xsplash

5. In your Home folder make new folder “.scripts” with a dot in front and small letters – the dot in front means that folder will be hidden and this is prevention for deletion becouse the script will be loaded in every Ubuntu startup; small letters is needed for better synchronization with this tutorial especially for beginner users. To show hidden folders in Nautilus window manager, from the View menu select “Show hidden files”

6. After that go to the folder where the script is downloaded and unziped "Home/Downloads" folder and and copy the script to a newly created folder “.scripts”

7. Go to the “.scripts” folder and Right click to the file “wallpaper_daemon.py”, choose Properties/Permissions/ and on Execute command – check “Allow executing file as a program” or you can do this in terminal:

cd ~/.scripts && chmod +x wallpaper_daemon.py

8. Next execute this command in terminal:

cd ~/.scripts && ./wallpaper_daemon.py --install

9. You will get message “daemon started”. Close the terminal besides the running process.

10. Now, go to System/Preferences/Start up Applications and click add. Add the name “Xsplash Background” to the name field and add the next line to the Command field and click Save:

~/.scripts/wallpaper_daemon.py

11. Change your Background on usual way: Right click on Desktop and choose Change Desktop Background - select new background.

12. Important: Before restart the system, start the terminal again and check if everything works ok with next command:

sudo xsplash

If the Xsplash is shown with the selected background everything is ok. Whenever you login and change your wallpaper the daemon will automatically adjust the xsplash background to selected background. If you get some error messages check if you do something wrong in the previous steps. If the errors are continued you must uninstall the all process:

UNINSTALL / RESTORE DEFAULT XSPLASH - Dont panic, it is simple and painless:

1. Remove wallpaper_daemon.py from the startup programs - go to System/Preferences/Start up Applications - find “Xsplash Background” - select it and click remove

2. Extract your backup file. If you used the install routine this file is called backup.TIMESTAMP (where TIMESTAMP is dynamically generated number) and located at “/usr/share/images/xsplash”.

Important: Copy/paste the next line, then delete”.TIMESTAMP” press TAB and then ENTER

tar -C / -xf /usr/share/images/xsplash/backup.TIMESTAMP

3. Important: don't change your desktop wallpaper before restarting!!!

How to install Google Chromium on Ubuntu 9.10

Google Chromium is Linux version of Google Chrome. It's fast, secure and very simple to install and use. This Google browser is native Linux app and is build from scratch not using wine like Google Picasa for Linux. For installing we will use PPA launchpad repositories from Google Chrome development team.

1. Open System/Administration/Software Sources, click on Other Software tab and add repositories line by line:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

2. Next, open terminal and add the GPG key (Ctrl+Shift+V - paste in terminal)

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xfbef0d696de1c72ba5a835fe5a9bf3bb4e5e17b5

3. Then, update the source list and install Google Chromium with next terminal line:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

After installing, you can found Google Chromium at Applications/Internet menu.

MacOS 10.6.2 kills support for Intel Atom

Apple continues its fight against increasing number of hackintosh community, particularly the growing part devoted to modification of the Atom netbooks machines. Apple will upgrade the upcoming Snow Leopard 10.6.2 to exclude the possibility of successful installation on Atom driven netbooks.

Something similar may be included in MacOS 10.5.9 update. So if you are already MacOS user on Atom netbook avoid these upgrades.

Hackintosh scene has experienced rapid popularity among cheap netbooks owners because the Mac Os installation process is very easy with minimal modifications. Especially popular are Dell Mini 9 and 10 becouse all hardware components simply works with MacOS system.

10 things to do after installing Ubuntu 9.10

Ubuntu 9.10 is excellent, it has improvements in every field, it is faster, more responsive, the effects are smoother, the apps installation easiest than ever :)) But after installing your system you must spend some time of fine tuning your system... Here is 10 things how to do that:

1. Install Graphics drivers. According to your graphic card, you need to install graphic drivers to support advance compiz effects. In this particular case, I'm using nvidia, so in Applications/Ubuntu Software Center search for “nvidia drivers” without quotes (or ATI, Intel, VIA or other – depending of your graphic card). Next select the newest one and click install. If you have older graphic card maybe you should downgrade your driver version. Ubuntu will automatically suggest that when you start System/Administration/Hardware drivers to activate your graphic driver. Select the driver from the list a click activate. After restart you will have new drivers activated with advance compiz effects..

2. Fonts. To install Microsoft Windows fonts, open your terminal (Applications/Accessories/Terminal) and enter:

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

If you want to install any other fonts you can get from the net or use your font database follow this steps:

Go to your home folder (Places/HomeFolder)
Enable “Show Hidden Files” option from Nautilus View menu
Then create new folder with name “.fonts” (with dot in front)
Now in new folder copy all your true type fonts. If you want to copy your Windows fonts, you can find it in WINDOWS/Fonts folder.
After that, the new fonts will be active, you can try it with OpenOffice or other application.

3. Make LCD Monitor Adjustments – To optimize your Ubuntu LCD Screen go to:

System/Preferences/Appearance and choose Fonts tab.
Select the SubPixel Smoothing (LCD) and click details.
Next - find “Hinting” field and select “Medium”.
Close the Appearance window. Your pixels should be smoother now.

4. Make Ubunty 9.10 Multimedia ready (DVD, Divx, Xvid, MP3, WMA, WMV, MOV, etc..). Go to Applications/Ubuntu Software Center and search for Gstreamer plugins. From the list bellow, install one by one next Gstreamer plugins:

GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin
GStreamer extra plugins
GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack
GStreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad

After installation you can play all you favorite songs and movies in various multimedia formats.

To enable protected DVD playback, you must install a few things more:

First, Medibuntu to the repository - Medubuntu is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons (copyright, license, patent, etc). Doing that is quite easy, just copy and paste in terminal this commands block by block(Ctrl+Shift+V in terminal to paste):

For DVD:

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list \
--output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list &&
sudo apt-get -q update &&
sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring &&
sudo apt-get -q update

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

You can also add Windows, Real Networks, Quick Time and other codecs support:

Ubuntu 9.10 32bit

sudo apt-get install w32codecs

Ubuntu 9.10 64bit

sudo apt-get install w64codecs

That's it. For DVD player, we recommend to install VLC media player. For anything else, the native Ubuntu player is excellent.

5. Install Screenlets – Screenlets are Widgets (Clock, Calendar, Weather and other useful things on your desktop). Go to Application/Ubuntu Software Center, search for Screenlets and Click install. Next you can set up screenlets from Applications/Accesories menu.

6. Mount your Windows HDD 's on Ubuntu startup with PySdm. You can install Pysdm with Ubuntu Software Center or with your terminal:

sudo apt-get install pysdm

Next run the app with

sudo pysdm

On partition list you can found all your hard drives. Click on the drive you want to mount, then on general preferences tab click Mount and apply. If the disks are not mounted on startup, start your Pysdm again and select Mount on startup options then apply. Be careful, don’t play with the rest options if you are not experienced user because you can damage your Ubuntu system.

7. Set another Keyboard Layout – If your language is not native English, you can set another keyboard layout so you can write to you native language.

Open System/Preferences/Keyboard and select layout tab.
Then click Add, and from the new window select your country or language and click add again.
You default keyboard layout shortcuts are both ALT. If you want to change that, go to Layout Options/ Keys to Change Layout/ and select your combination.

8. Add Rar support to Ubuntu. Many files on the net (music, subtitles, e-books, rapidshare files etc...) are packed in .rar so you must add rar support to use them. It is easiest part of all tuning processes so open your terminal and copy/paste next line:

sudo apt-get install rar unrar

9. Install Skype and additional themes on your Empathy messenger. To install Skype go to Skype official page and download the latest Skype for Ubuntu 8.10+. Open it with gdebi installer and follow the on screen instructions. After that you can find Skype on Applications/Internet menu.

10. Install Adobe Flash Plugin to Firefox – You can do it manually from Ubuntu Software Center or Adobe official page (select .deb package in version download) or enter some address with flash content – example "youtube" and select install missing plugins from Firefox

After all this tunings, make update to your system – Go to System/Administration/System Update and make sure that everything is on and up to date. Enjoy and have fun with your new Ubuntu 9.10 experience.

Easy Install 65+ empathy chat themes on Ubuntu

To install new chat themes first download the themes .deb file from here.

Install it with double click and then follow the next easy tutorial. You must copy the installed themes on your home folder. Here is the steps:

Find the installed files in “/usr/share/empathy-chat-themes” . You can do it manually or in nautilus – click on pencil below the back/forward icons and copy the path without quotes.
Next open your local folder on new nautilus window: Click Places/Home Folder.
From the View tab select “Show hidden files”
Go to “.local/share” folder and make new folder “adium” then make another folder inside adium called “message-styles”.
Final step, copy all files from “/usr/share/empathy-chat-themes” (Ctrl+A to select all and Ctrl+C to copy) and copy to “.local/share/adium/message-styles/” (Ctrl+V to paste)
That's it, you can found empathy themes in edit/preferences/themes in empathy window

Symbian has announced that the kernel of their popular Symbian OS will now be open source. Currently, Symbian OS is the most popular mobile operating system and is widely used by Nokia phones and other smart phones.

Recently, Facebook social network announced more than a 300 million users, while new trends show no decrease in popularity in the coming months. However, very small percent of facebook users thinks about the logistics that stays behind Facebook network so the whole system can work without problems.

The last official outdated data of Facebook servers comes from April 2008 and it counts about 10.000 servers, and today info counts about 30.000 servers serving the social community. The servers for 300 million users are maintained by 230 engineers and they consumed almost $20 million US dollars per year.

Rothschild has also published a few interesting statistics: Currently Facebook stores totally 80 billion photos (20 billion different, each in four sizes), while the servers every second serve approximately 600.000. How to check battery status on Ubuntu

Ubuntu provides you with the proc filesystem from you can get very useful information’s for your system. If you need info for your battery, you can found at /proc/acpi/battery folder. If you use only one laptop battery you can find info on BATO folder, otherwise there will be several folders according to your number of batteries. So for quick check, open terminal and copy/paste yhe next code into it:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info

You can then see useful information about your battery’s health etc..

For current battery state enter this lines to the terminal:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state

Now you can see how long will the battery last and other useful info. Have fun.

Sun claims that they have the fastest network disk system FlashFire. It is a 2TB capacity device that is mounted in a standard network racks, and according to the official statement the speed is 1.6 million operation in reading and 1.2 million in writing per second. More impressive is the speed of data transfer which is 12.8 GB/s.

At this moment the only competitor of Sun is RamSan-440 from Texas Memory Systems that provides bandwidth of "only" 4.5 GB/s.

Shared folders in Google Docs

Although Google Docs before allows document sharing among users, from Monday started new service which allows sharing of folders also. In this way, by setting access rights to the shared folder, and define access rights to each document in the folder - whether on the text, table or presentation. Easy Install Wordpress on your Windows

For easiest Wordpress windows installation you can use Microsoft’s Web Platform Installer and with a few clicks, you will be running a full WordPress blog on your computer without doing any complex stuff.

Microsoft Web Platform Installer is free product designed to make it easy for you to develop and run websites on your Windows PC. It provides a wizard which will help you to install the wanted blogging or CMS platform. The installer is web based and it will install only necessary components that you need for specific platform.

Download and run the Web Platform Installer (download here), click the “Web Applications” tab and then select the “Blogs”. Find and select WordPress to install. The other options needed for Wordpress installation will be automatically added to the installation.

When the installation is done, you will be asked for specific information about your website and passwords for database admin and the Wordpress database. You can use the default options.

Next, setup your Wordpress blog.

1. When everything is installed, “Launch WordPress,” with the top link or you can do it manually with your browser. Enter on your address bar:

http://localhost/wordpress

2. Enter the name and password for your website and click install wordpress.

Wordpress will use admin as a username and will generate password for your blog.

After you log in, WordPress will show you a reminder to change the default admin password or you can change your password in user/your profile.

Windows 8 in 128–bit variant in 2012?

Microsoft eagerly awaited starting sale of Windows 7 in 22nd October, and initially (like Vista) in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. At the same time, 64-bit version take more and more users from the "ordinary" users, so Microsoft is preparing a new revolution for future versions.

According to unofficial information, the new windows name will be Windows 8 and Windows 9 in 128-bit variant, which is necessary and appropriate hardware. Information are coming from the LinkedIn profile Robert Morgan, long-term employee in Microsoft research and development department. The description stated “Development of 128-bit compatibility for Windows 8 and Windows 9 center, in collaboration with Intel, AMD, HP and IBM”. Morgan pointed out that they are developing a binary instruction set compatibility IA-128 with the existing IA-64, while the simulations are already in progress.

Whatever the case, Windows 8 should bring important changes compared to previous systems. It is mentioned a new algorithms and API functions for hibernation, support for clusters, better support for the SSD's and a lot of other features. Of course, all this information has not officially confirmed.

Windows 8 will be released on the market probably in the year 2012.

Firefox 3.6 Works With The Accelerometer

If you own a notebook or handheld device equipped with accelerometers, which are more common part of these PCs, the new Firefox 3.6 will be able to use that part of the equipment.

The new version of Firefox is able to take data of the orientation of the device from the built-in accelerometer and inform application executed in the browser window. In Mozilla think that this feature is useful for early web-lab type games where the user control the movement of an object with movement of device, such as (from “that” time) Marble Madness, for those which still remember it.

Of course, not exclude the possibility of some other applications outside of games, but in this moment nothing comes to mind...
