National Geographic Internship

Its been a while since my last post, but I have some fun news! Starting May 5, I will be starting a photo-research internship in New York City at the National Geographic Adventure magazine. The internship is four months, and some of the duties include routing photography materials, learning magazine production, conducting photo research on future story assignments, assist with stock photo research, and administrative photo organization. This work will be conducted under their photo editor. The NG Adventure magazine is published by the National Geographic society, and is intended for "imaginative people who like to try new outdoor pursuits and want to travel to wild corners of the planet". In addition, Adventure "inspires readers through profiles of remarkable explorers, past and present; travel narratives to amazing destinations; stories of exhilarating excursions closer to home; and accounts of ambitious expeditions...". All for now!

My heart goes out to the Hawaiians who are trying to save their beaches, surf spots, and culture on the North Shore. If you get a moment, sign their petition to stop the construction of up to 5 hotels in the Turtle Bay area by clicking HERE. I suppose every little bit helps. It is sad to me that there are still people who choose to remain ignorant to the truth; our resources on this earth are limited. Nearly all the beaches here in Florida are developed or over-developed, and with it comes consequences. The Florida Keys and Everglades (just one example), once full of living coral and clean water, are now part of the world's largest eco-restoration project. Florida beaches don't even compare to the beauty of Hawaiian beaches, and it would be such a loss to this planet for them to become developed and polluted. Sad!

Food for the Poor Donation

This month, 1,000 photo tees will be donated to Food for the Poor, Inc. Since 1982, Food for the Poor has provided direct relief assistance to the poor by improving the health, economic, social and spiritual conditions of men, women, and children throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The shirts will be shipped to Haiti and given out those in need through a church already operating in areas of need. In this way, the organization serves the poor with dignity and ensures the most appropriate use of donor's funds, goods, or in this case photo goods. Adventure Photography Workshop

This September 21-25, I will be attending an adventure photography workshop put on by National Geographic's "Adventure" magazine in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It will be an intensified week of learning and critique by a handful of the top adventure photographers in the field today. Prior to the workshop, I will be spending 5 days shooting wildlife in Yellowstone. I will blog again when I return home, and build an online album of the photos. All for now, Amy

Sea Wall Mural

New Smyrna Beach, FL: A couple years ago I had the opportunity to paint a seawall near Crawford Avenue. The colorful spectacle is 6 feet high and stretches 60 feet wide. The painting was inspired by an indonesian fabric dying technique called "batik" and includes multicolored coral and sea life. The mural took 3 months to complete due to weather and tides. If you're ever driving on the beach in New Smyrna, head one mile south of downtown's Flagler Avenue to see the wall.

Orlando Style Magazine

This month I did a photo shoot that no one would have predicted... a feature for a style magazine. The purpose of the article, "In Her Closet", was to showcase an Orlando woman who is known for her style and elaborate closet. New! Costa Rica photos

Here are some of my most recent photos taken in Costa Rica. Locations include Hermosa, Boca Barranca, Salsa Brava, Jaco, and the rainforest. One of the most spectacular sights of the trip was a tour through the rainforest at Rainmaker. Their goal is to preserve the natural land while educating people about the rainforest. Please take a moment to visit their website: www.rainmakercostarica.org. Another highlight was capturing a swell on the Caribbean side of the country at a surf spot called Salsa Brava. The swell only lasted 3 days, and the first two days were mostly overcast and didn't offer much lighting for photos. Luckily, on the last day the sun came out, and although the swell had dropped a bit in size, it was a spectacular sight. Boca Barranca also broke beautifully. Being the second longest left in the world, it was amazing to see just how far a wave can actually break. At the Manuel Antonio National Park, the monkeys are aggressive and will steal your belongings if you're not careful. Hope you enjoy my photos from Costa Rica.
