Friendster never died — it just moved

If they recall it at all, most Americans probably remember Friendster as the also-ran of social networking sites. Although the site had a head start when it launched in 2002, its founders squandered their lead when software glitches and slow access times prompted users to flee to the now hugely popular MySpace and Facebook. Friendster seemed destined for the scrap heap, remembered mainly as the company with the smiley-face logo whose owners in 2003 turned down a $30 million buyout offer from Google.

But Friendster never died — it just moved. Thanks largely to an accident of geography, it's become Southeast Asia's top social networking site. Asia is home to three-quarters of Friendster's 58 million users, compared to 17% in the U.S., and it's the source of 89% of the site's traffic, compared to just 8% from North America. While its bigger rivals MySpace and Facebook are just discovering the land across the Pacific, Friendster is already the most-visited web site in the Philippines and Indonesia, and the second most-visited site in Malaysia and Singapore, according to rankings from web tracker Alexa. In 2006, Friendster hired a 20-person engineering team in the Philippines, and last September, it opened a sales office in Singapore. Friendster's second life came almost by accident. The company started in Mountain View, California, before moving its headquarters two years ago to San Francisco, "the most Asian of U.S. cities," says Friendster president Kent Lindstrom. As a result, thousands of early adopters were Asian-American Californians who formed a nucleus that quickly expanded across the Pacific as users invited friends and relatives in Asia to join the network. Until last fall, Friendster was available only in English, but that didn't impede its growth in Southeast Asia, where colonial history has left high English proficiency and romanized Asian languages. Still, the site's new home across the Pacific came as a surprise to management. "We never envisioned it'd be growing like this," says Lindstrom.

Friendster's international reach has become a competitive advantage, for the company as well as for users. Five months after releasing her first album, Malaysian pop singer Karen Kong uploaded a video of a recent concert performance onto her Friendster page last summer, attracting two million viewers, mostly from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines and Indonesia. Her manager, Fred Chong, says that even though the record label created an expensive web site for the artist, Kong's Friendster profile is "way more powerful than any official page," attracting up to 800,000 page views per month. With more than 150,000 friends linked to her page, Kong has the biggest following of any Friendster user. "Her profile just exploded," says Chong. "For us, it's been a miracle."

Friendster's trying to pull off another miracle. It's reaching out to the 210 million Internet users in China, where the company's user base is already "in the hundreds of thousands," Lindstrom says. Last September, the company began rolling out foreign language capabilities: traditional Chinese for Hong Kong, Taiwan and other Chinese communities around the world, followed by simplified Chinese for mainland China, Spanish, Japanese and Korean. Unlike MySpace, which has launched separate, localized sites for different countries, Friendster is keeping all of its worldwide users on one multilingual site, according to Lindstrom, whose own Friendster profile shows pictures of him in Tiananmen Square and on the Great Wall.

Friendster may have a tough time staying ahead of its wealthier American rivals, which are starting to look to Asia for growth, as well as formidable local competitors such as Shanghai-based 51.com, which already has 90 million subscribers, and Xiaonei, a Chinese replica of Facebook. Less than 10% of visitors to MySpace and Facebook live in Asia, according to June 2007 figures from Internet research company comScore, but that is set to change. MySpace now operates separate sites in Japan and China, and has plans to launch sites in several more countries this year, including South Korea and India. Though Facebook has yet to release foreign-language versions of its site, comScore data shows the number of Asian visitors to its main site spiked more than 3,000% between August 2006 and August 2007.

The privately-owned Friendster, which is operating on $25 million in venture capital, says it's not intimidated by these billion-dollar giants. "We're not surprised that people are competing in our space," says David Jones, vice president of marketing at Friendster. "That's validation of the industry we helped create." And the Americans who've written them off? "Most of the world is outside the U.S.," says Lindstrom. "We're very globally focused." Stiffer competition in Asia is surely on the way, but until then, Friendster has plenty of reasons to smile.

Gang-Rape Cover-Up by U.S., Halliburton/KBR

I just found out about this today.

A woman from Houston, Texas says she was raped at Camp Hope in Bagdad in 2005 by several men employees of KBR which was a subsidiary of Halliburton at that time.

Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone she was put under guard in a shipping container for 24 hours without food or water.

Jones convinced one of the guards to use a cell phone so she can call her father at Texas. She told her father that she had been raped and was being held prisoner. Her father called their congressman, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas. Immediately Rep Poe called State Department and told them of the urgency of rescuing an American citizen. The state Department quickly sent out agents from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to Jones' camp, where they rescued and free her from the container.

After two years, the Justice Department has conducted no criminal charges in the matter. Legal experts say that these men will not likely face any judge and jury, due to a massive ambiguity that has effectively left contractors in Iraq beyond the reach of United States law.

Jaime still continues to fight for her justice. She is pursuing a civil case but under her contract she is not allowed to sue Halliburton or KBR. She can go through arbitration with a private mediator.

Why and how would we give so much authority to private companies like this only to not do something like this but not be able to bring them up on charges?

This is painful and unforgivable behavior!!! People who are involved in this horrible crime should be punished and prosecuted by law no excuses or whatsoever.

An Office Fling!

So your man works pretty much everyday. Always spends his time inside the office and comes home late and exhausted. But of course you knew that he’s not the only one working, he is with his co workers and colleagues etc. What if your man gets trapped in what you called “an office fling”? He and his woman co-worker spend so much time working together and all of a sudden feelings develop. But here’s the thing, the affair never turns to be physical. What if they only spend time together and share an emotional connection. Do you consider it cheating? Same goes to women also!

I was reading this article regarding How Men Cheats and one of the readers posted this question. It made me think and kinda ask myself too if I will consider it cheating. Well for me I think emotional cheating is worst than physical. The moment you get deeply attracted to somebody else just means that you’re not fully in love or happy being with your current partner anymore. When your feelings started to change than that’s the fall of every relationship, strong relationship starts from the emotions. A woman thinks with her heart and the man more with the mind.

Cheating is cheating no matter what form it takes and its WRONG!

So what is this new Google invention can do for us now?

Google Base Beta is place where you can put any information you want to the internet. It includes every kind of information, from your collection of holiday products to your love poem to your favorite chicken recipe.
For example let say you have a delicious home made style pot roast recipe. You could actually put it on your website, but there’s no assurance that people will find it. When you post it to Google Base, supposedly, can help gain a lot of exposure. You can use keywords called labels to categorize your recipe and attributes to describe it more. Once you upload it to Google base, anyone searching for a pot roast recipe will likely see it online. And if your recipe becomes popular it will eventually appear in the main Google index.

Most likey if you use Google Base you may no longer need any website. You just upload your list of services, products, art or the like to Google Base with your correct labels and attributes and your content will be available all around the world. So what’s the catch? Eventually Google could target relevant ads to listings, as it does with other products.

Hosting listings are free and easy to post. Difficult to browse listings. Supports only English language and U.S. currency for now.

Last weekend I attended two birthday celebrations. Two separate dinner parties.
Friday, we went to this Mexican Restaurant called 'Rio Grande Café 'located at Northern VA. Here they served you with there all you can eat handmade tortillas and sizzling fajitas together with there freshly made salsas. If you’re into Mexican foods then here’s a place where you want to go. I ordered "The Plato Gordo", if you want to taste a little bit of everything. It comes with there famous mesquite grilled favorites. Marinated beef and chicken fajitas, costillas and camerones brochette.

They also have a frozen drink called a Swirl. It is half frozen sangria and half frozen margarita. It is their signature alcoholic drink and like most everything else in the restaurant - very good. A little bit noisy though because the place is always crowded. Good food and very affordable. B+

Saturday, another friend of mine celebrated his birthday at this elegant restaurant here at Downtown DC, it’s called 'The Oceanaire Seafood Room'. The décor is very inviting with dark wood paneling, semicircular red-leather booths, and white tablecloths. We tried some of the oysters on the half shell for appetizer. There were typically a dozen varieties, and they came to the table nicely shucked and glistening.

For the main entree, I ordered this Chesapeake jumbo crab cakes and it was alright. I also got to tastes some of the other food that we ordered and I'm a little bit dissapointed because some were really not that good. The fish was not fully cooked and it tasted like rubber. I can say that there food was way too much.

I think if you're the type of a person that likes to eat at places that only looks nice, then this place is for you. Ill give this a C-.

Is TomTom for you??

Few weeks ago I bought a Tomtom ONE XL-S gps. I’m no Mapquest and neither Google maps. I’m the type that I need to go several times in a certain location to get familiarized and straightened up my directions. For those of you who have TomTom ONE XL, it’s basically identical except for its text-to-speech feature. Text-to-speech feature tells you the street names of every road you need to take, for example you'll get "turn left on Streamview lane in 500 feet" rather than just "turn left in 500 feet" pretty cool huh. Other features include the time it will be until your next turn and which direction you need to go, the night / day settings are great and appropriate and adjustable, the HELP feature is good but a little 'busy' with the First Aid instructions etc. -- and they're from the British Red Cross, not the American Red Cross and so much more.

But most of the users find it not quite a user friendly device especially if you’re not really familiar with gps. For example, if you select any other voice for the directions, you won't get the "S" functionality, just the same directions as the XL version. This wasn't spelled out in the instructions and took me a couple days to figure it out. Additionally, the URLs on TomTom's website haven't been updated for the XLS or the manual.

But all in all I'm satisfied with this GPS. Once you get used to all of its features then your good to go! I can say that this one is a nice gift to get for Christmas!

First Snow Fall of the Season

I am off today from work *yay* because we are having some weather situation. We're having our 1st snow fall of the season here in the east coast. Not a lot in my area but for most part they're having 1” to 2” plus of snow already. Even though it’s not much, since I live far from my work, my boss told me to just stay home because it’s crazy outside, lots of accidents and the traffic, man, so terrible!

When I first came here in the US I was so excited to see snow falling down the ground. Because I was born and raise in a tropical island the Philippines, I don’t have any idea how it looks and feels like being in the country where there’s a lot of snow. Yeah too shallow but hey I’m young back then and I’m sure if you’re in my situation you will feel the same way too haha. But anyways, as time goes by and I’m encountering snow every year, I kinda starting to dislike it. Actually, I don’t like cold season. It’s so boring and makes me feel so lazy to get up every morning. It makes me just want to stay in my bed all day under my smooth soft blanket and sip a hot cocoa while watching my favorite DVD. And for the clothes, ugh! I wear triple of what I wear normally or I can wear like the super thick winter coat that it’s so heavy that I can’t even walk straight.

Well looking at the bright side though, it’s fun because there’s a lot of cancellation and delays in school (fun for kids most specially) and work, like mine hehe. And also whenever cold season comes I always tag it with Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, meaning more fun and party because of the holidays.

It’s the 1st week of December few more days till Christmas and before we know it, it’s 2008 already! Are you done with your Christmas shopping list? I spent my whole weekend buying Christmas stuff for my family and friends and I’m still not done with everybody.

I love Christmas shopping because I love giving gifts to my love ones but sometimes it’s hard because I just don’t buy gifts to them but I think through first what kind of gifts should I buy to each one of them. I don’t like buying gifts just for the sake of buying and so that I have something to give on Christmas, I know it’s the thought that counts but where is the thought if you just randomly get something for that person without even thinking if that person will ever use it or not. I hate it when a person give’s you a book for example, I know you will ask what’s wrong with that? Yeah, nothing’s wrong with that but if that person give’s you the same book as he/she gave you last year then thats when the problem occur. It’s like for me; you know what don’t even bother!

Buying gifts expresses thoughtfulness and love to a certain person merely buy giving a little bit of your time, it doesn’t really necessarily expensive it could be just something simple as long as you exert effort, I’m sure it would be appreciated.

Once in your life, you experienced a time when you felt puzzled about the path which your life was heading, I myself once been in this kind of scenario and I realized that whatever direction my ship takes me you will always encounter opportunities in life whatever it may be.

Your personality is a huge factor in choosing which door to walk through. If you are open to all the chances and possibilities in life, together with your strong faith, choosing the right door to walk through would be easy.

You always want to choose the right thing. You are so busy making the right choices so much that you don’t go anywhere. You get stuck right where you are. If you encounter a closed door, avoid forcing and beating it till it opens. It won’t open, meaning it’s not for you so choose the door that’s open when you knock.

As you continue your journey and discover your path, you will still face a lot of trials and challenges. In order for you to know that you are walking to the right gate, you need to keep choosing the right trail that appears to involve the right amount of effort. Do you sometimes caught yourself using this kind of punctuations "!?" in your sentence? Do you ever figure out if this is even a correct punctuations to use? I don't remember my teacher teaching me about using this when I was on preschool up until I finished college. Well according to the infamous "WIKI" ,

The interrobang is a rarely used, nonstandard English-language punctuation mark intended to combine the functions of the question mark (also called the interrogative point) and the exclamation mark (known in printers' jargon as the bang). The typographical character is a superimposition of those two marks.

A sentence ending with an interrobang either (1) asks a question in an excited manner, (2) expresses excitement or disbelief in the form of a question, or (3) asks a rhetorical question..

The same effect is also achieved by putting the exclamation point before or after the question mark; e.g., "How could you do such a thing!?" or "How could you do such a thing?!"

Mobile Phone by Google on 2008?

Reports are starting to flow that Google may be doing a deal with Smartphone producers; HTC and Motorola, to create a Google Phone most likely loaded with mobile Google applications and not based on Windows Mobile! They call there latest invention as ANDROID, named after a tech company that Google bought last summer of 2005. Google assures to bring the world’s first open source that will give developers the flexibility to design their own products and applications for mobile users. The key factor is the capability of those mobile companies to customize there mobile devices.

However, in order to see their ad business efficiently, handsets must have a source software platform for business’s that offers low-cost entry to independent software vendors. They are guessing that Google will have its phone service for free if people want to see the ads. The only catch that people needs to do is to pay 20 percent less for a phone including Google’s software. Maybe with this kind of deal, Verizon and ATT subscribers will want to change there lines with their high content. But in the other hand, if it’s not free and the price is a little bit higher customers might end up switching.

As we all know eBay is the most powerful store on the www. We can get almost everything from eBay for the cheapest price. Most of us love hunting vintage and modern branded clothes among other things. But we should also be aware of some imposters out there selling fake designer products.

Here are some steps that will help you hunt for your right outfit.

Limit Yourself
Before you start browsing the site, you need to have a list of how many are you willing to buy. One piece will probably great, two or three will just be okey and couple will be too much. Shoes are really tricky. I bought a pair of shoes from Ebay before and it didn’t fit. Before I bought, of course I made sure that it’s my size but then when I got it, it’s too big. Take note, only 20% actually fit and look good.

Narrow your Search
Instead of browsing the eBay store for vintage clothes, try to narrow your search. For instance you could do a search for a “1960s halter dress" or “Gold enabled bangle”.

Special Feature
Go under “My eBay” icon and change your preferences to view tons of items per page. Also try the “Favorite Searches” feature, it will let you choose a key word or phrase and the site will notify you whenever a new item matching your description is listed.
Another thing, it’s much better if you use the “Buy it Now” feature, only if you can afford the item though, so you can bypass an item outright and also not to miss out on anything.

Check the sellers feedback. You need to make sure that the person whom you buying the product is reliable and honest. Sellers usually say if the item is new, used or damaged. You can also email the seller if you have any question about the products.

Size it up
Sizing is always the biggest problem when you’re shopping for clothes, specially if it's vintage or one of a kind piece. If measurements aren’t showing ask the seller to measure inseams, sleeves, and pants lengths.
TIP: Go up a size from your normal size. Don’t be afraid of alterations. It’s better to get it too big than too small.

We want Wii

What’s in the Nintendo Wii that a lot of people are eager to rush to the stores and grab it once the store announces that it’s already available? The Wii has been flying off store shelves since it debuted a year ago, bypassing the popularity of the PS3 and Xbox 360. Up until now the Wii is getting sold out in just a blink of an eye!

Well based on my own experience, I really like Wii compared to Xbox 360 and PS3. I think Nintendo took a different approach in the gaming world experience. I like how they changed the traditional buttons-dictate-actions approach to the joystick. Nintendo centered on play, making the actions of its controller’s part of the game and play technique, giving the Wii more advance concept. Instead of just moving the buttons to promote simplicity of use, it changes the way the item is used.

As you start playing the Wii you will come to realize that this system is fun for everybody. To get a better gaming pleasure you need to try multiplayer action. People of all ages and even your Granny will love to play the Wii. Every part of the Wii is full of fun. Even the feature like creating your own profile will give you some laugh as you try to create your self as a character. Once you start playing you will feel that the actions are real and live.

As for Graphics, sure it does not have the best graphics compared to PS3 and Xbox 360 but I think what people are really looking for is a console that gives more satisfaction and freedom. I think Wii creates more interaction and enjoyment for all gamers, new ones or old ones.
And best of all its CHEAP!

Better than $ex ....

CAKE! yes! I'm talking about 'Better than $ex Cake' that my friend made, what the heck are you thinking??? lol Since it's the weekend I thought of sharing this delicioso dessert recipe. So if your planning just to stay indoors and thinking of some dessert to cook for your love ones, try this one! I know we are just trying to shed some pounds from the Thanksgiving fiasco but there's no harm in tasting and prolly if you like it you can serve this on XMAS or NEw YEar =)! I swear you guys will love this!

Better than $ex CAke!

1 box yellow cake mix
1 box French vanilla pudding (can be instant)
1/2 c. oil
1/2 c. water (some recipes call for milk instead)
4 eggs
1 (8 oz.) carton commercial sour cream
1 (6 oz.) bag sweet chocolate chips
1 c. chopped pecans
1 bar (or 1/2 box) German chocolate, grated
1 c. coconut, toasted

Add each ingredient in the order above, blend thoroughly between each. Pour into a greased, floured tube pan and bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes or until done.

ICING FOR B-T-S CAKE
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, at room temperature
1 box confectioners' sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Nuts and coconut

Cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add vanilla, nuts and coconut.

BETTER THAN SEX CAKE 2
1 1/2 c. sugar
9 oz. frozen whipped topping
1 box vanilla pudding
1 box butter cake mix
1 sm. size can crushed pineapple

Mix cake and bake by package directions in two 9-inch cake pans. Allow to cool. Cook sugar and pineapple together on low heat for 5 to 10 minutes. When cake cools, stick hole in the cake and pour cooled pineapple and sugar mixture over cake.

Add vanilla pudding, mixed by package directions, between layers and to top within 1 inch of edge. Ice sides and top edge with cake with whipped topping, and refrigerate until ready to use.

An Indonesian fisherman who feared that he would be killed by tree-like growths covering his body has been given hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A.

Dede, now 35, baffled medical experts when warty "roots" began growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident. The welts spread across his body unchecked and soon he was left unable to carry out everyday household tasks.

Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, Dede has been raising his two children - now in their late teens - in poverty, resigned to the fact that local doctors had no cure for his condition.

To make ends meet he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience alongside victims of other peculiar diseases.

Although supported by his extended family, he was often a target of abuse and ridicule in his rural fishing village.

But now an American dermatology expert who flew out to Dede's home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life.

After testing samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.

Dede's problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts.

The virus was therefore able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" on his hands and feet.

Dede's counts of a key type of white blood cell are so low that Dr. Gaspari initially suspected he may have the Aids virus.

But tests showed he did not, and it became clear that Dede's immune condition was something far rarer and more mysterious.

Warts aside, he had enjoyed remarkable good health throughout his life - which would not be expected of someone with a suppressed immune system - and neither his parents nor his siblings have shown signs of developing lesions.

"The likelihood of having his deficiency is less than one in a million," Dr Gaspari told the Telegraph.

Dr Gaspari, who became involved in the case through a Discovery Channel documentary, believes that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been shown to arrest the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV.

"He won't have a perfectly normal body but the warts should reduce in size to the point where he could use his hands," Dr Gaspari said.

"Over the course of three to six months the warts should be come smaller and fewer in number. He will be living a more normal life."

The most resilient warts could then be frozen off and the growths on his hands and feet surgically removed.

Dr Gaspari hopes to get the necessary drugs free of charge from pharmaceutical firms. They would then be administered by Indonesian doctors under his supervision.

Still intrigued by the origins of Dede's peculiar immune condition, the doctor would like to fly him to the United States for further examination, but fears the financial and bureaucratic barriers would prove too difficult to overcome.

"I would like to bring him to the US to run tests on where his immune condition has come from, but I would need funding and to get him a visa as well as someone to cover the costs of the tests," he said.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire career."
