As well as a composer, Alwyn was an accomplished artist and poet and was at one time principal flautist of the LSO. As a composer, Alwyn was essentially from the late Romantic line of composers, writing in the same vein as William Walton.

Alwyn was perhaps best known for his film scores, of which he wrote over 70 between the war years and 1962. His classic scores included Odd Man Out, Desert Victory, Fires Were Started, The History of Mr Polly, The Fallen Idol, The Black Tent and The Crimson Pirate. Until recently, these scores were not available on record, but now quite a few are out on CD, thanks largely to the work of Philip Lane, who has reconstructed the scores from the original film soundtracks as written scores were often lost. You can read about some of his work here. In addition to Alwyn, Lane has worked on film music by another of our favourite composers here on The Light Programme, Richard Addinsell. You'll hear film scores from both composers today, often performed under the baton of Gavin Sutherland.

In addition to Alwyn's film scores, we'll hear his Elizabethan Dances, a set of six dance pieces written for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II - which alternate between modern styles and those of the first Elizabethan period - and his impressive Festival March, commissioned for the Festival of Britain, held on London's South Bank from May 1951. An artist's impression of the Festival appears above, and you can watch a public information film on the Festival at the National Archives site here - which is accompanied by Alwyn's Festival March. The Festival showcased British invention and was intended to provide a "tonic to the nation". It was attended by over 8.5 million people between May and September 1951.

From the Library is produced in conjunction with the Alexandrian Free Library Consortium, and today's programme is presented by Elrik Merlin. For more about the work of the Consortium, please click here. All of the music from last week's program was classical music, from the Baroque to Romantic eras.

This week, I am proud to present Part II of this program, which focuses on Jazz, Popular Standards from the early to mid 20th Century, as well as a healthy dose of Bluegrass and Cowboy songs! I remember sitting with my Dad, when I was about 12, watching old Roy Rogers movies. He was a huge fan of those movies and the music that they contained.

To me, my Dad will always be the Cowboy with the White Hat.

Radio Riel produces this program in conjunction with the Alexandrian Free Library Consortium of Second Life. Gabrielle Riel and Mosseveno Tenk are the program Producers...and we want your help to make this program happen! We are seeking:

Story Writers - we welcome short story submissions from any and all writers

Story Readers - we need people with excellent dramatic voice skills to read the stories; story authors are also welcome to read their own stories

A single reader will perform each story. We will also welcome dramas written for multiple characters if someone submits them. Stories should be no longer than 2000 words.

TfNB does not have a concrete schedule nor deadlines. We will gather stories as they come in, and we will produce a program when we have roughly 60 minutes of material. We will then wait until we receive another 60 minutes worth, and then produce show number two...and so on.

Keep in mind that story submission does not guarantee inclusion in the program. The Producers will review all stories prior to production and it is possible that you will be asked to edit your story, or that your story might be held until a later program based on its theme. Authors, if you have any concerns or questions about theme or tone of a story, please contact Mosseveno Tenk before you write, or during your writing.

We also welcome stories about actual New Babbage history, legends or previous roleplays. This will be a way that we can document some of the stories that have already played out in Babbage. These stories can educate new residents, and residents of other communities, about common and ongoing story threads in the City, for example the antics of the evil Dr. Obelensky.

If you would like to contribute to TfNB, please contact Gabrielle Riel or Mosseveno Tenk to let them know....or simply submit a story, and help us put this program into production!

World Wednesday: The Violin Around the World

Today's program on Radio Riel consists of music from around the world that focuses on one particular instrument, the violin. It is the culmination of my life long passion for music, and it is my goal to bring that passion to those of you that listen to Radio Riel. I've been influenced by music from different sources throughout my life, but the single largest influence on who I am musically, and thus what you Riel Audiophiles hear on Radio Riel, is my father.

Burke Riel (actual first name, my SL last name) passed away in August 2006. I don't think it's a coincidence that I joined SL in April of that year during the decline in his health, nor that my first time to play a show on air was in October, the show that sowed the seeds for Radio Riel. The energy that you feel from me regarding music, the love of it that I express on a regular basis, comes directly from my father, because I am exactly like him when it comes to music.

Last week my mother and I cleaned out his CD collection, a great deal of which I brought home with me for use on Radio Riel. Today's program is all from his Classical music. You will hear a variety of pieces, composers such as Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti, Puccini and more. And I think you will also hear the "ancestry" of Radio Riel. This is the music that surrounded me as I grew up, the music that influences how I play music on Radio Riel today.

Enjoy it. My father was as much of an entertainer as I am. But despite the rigours of the Depression, people still knew how to have fun, and the popularity of mass entertainment – whether it was live music, wireless, gramophone record or movie, reached an all-time high.

The music had changed, too, with the advent of new dances, swing, and the start of the big band era. In today's programme, you'll hear amazing soundtracks from Busby Berkeley's spectacular films, early Frank Sinatra with Tommy Dorsey, the wonderful writing of Noel Coward, instrumental hits of the period, songs that even today still bring a tear to the eye - and much, much more.

Listen in particular for songs in which a significant part of the total running time from the start of a number is taken up by an instrumental or vocal section - what we would today call an extended "intro". In fact, it's the "verse" section of the song that you seldom hear today - followed by the more familiar chorus, which is the part we might remember.

Inevitably, without checking the release dates of each of these songs, it's possible there's the odd number from the 40s in today's show, but the majority of those we'll leave for another day.

From the Library is presented by Radio Riel in conjunction with the Alexandrian Free Library Consortium of Second Life. And don't mind the fact that the Prim Minister accidentally opened a portal to the afterlife by mixing Pagan magic on Voodoo land...everything should be fine!

From the Library: Music of the High Renaissance

In this month's edition of The Early Music Show, we're featuring music of the Renaissance from Germany, France, Italy, Spain and England. Related to other solfege, or named note, systems used in Europe, the Sacred Harp developed in the 19th century as a way of teaching music in communities that lacked musical instruments.

This week's World Wednesdays program will give listeners a taste of a traditional Sacred Harp singing session, featuring a selection of tunes from the Sacred Harp and other shapenote hymnals--including some non-traditional interpretations. You can listen to the program now at http://main.radioriel.org.

For more information on the Alexandrian Free Library, current exhibits and the work of Consortium members in general, please visit the Alexandrian Free Library website, or one of their branches in-world.

Halloween Dance at Poppy Estate in Caledon

Radio Riel provided music at back to back Halloween dances this evening. The first one being at the Peacock Tavern in Wellsian with Gabrielle Riel presenting. The second dance at Autopilotpatty Poppy's regular Saturday evening dance but moved back to 9 pm because of the earlier Ball in Wellsian that was expected to be heavily attended.

Just a few minutes after 9 the crowd began to arrive at the 150m high pavillion that was created especially for the event. Ghosts, electricity, skulls, fog, clouds, blowing curtains; all sorts of creepy halloweenish things would meld with the party goers with their wonderful array of costumes.

Well into the 4th continuous hour of Radio Riel music a special visitor arrived on scene in the form of Miss Infinity Linden. She endured us for well over 30 minutes, possibly longer, joining in the dance and visiting with us. A very delightful person indeed.

Regards
Poppy
