Tips for Traveling with your Dog from Dogster.com

For all of you dog lovers out there, check out http://www.dogster.com/, the My Space for dogs. It is a really fun place to go to give your dogs a chance to make new friends and to get to know other people in your area with the same dog loves. This month, Dogster.com has some great tips on traveling with your dog. Here are their tips for taking your dog in the car.

Driving With Dogs

It is acceptable for larger dogs to ride in a seat, like a human passenger. If your dog has never done this before, consider making one or two short "practice" excursions to be sure the canine keeps its place and does not try to roam around the car. Smaller dogs may prefer to be transported in their sleeping crates, as this provides a secure refuge from a strange situation. Be aware that all dogs are fascinated by the smells they encounter when they stick their noses out the window of a moving car. It is acceptable to indulge this desire, but never leave the window open so far that the dog can jump or fall out.

During long car trips, allow the dog to make regular rest and exercise stops (always leash it before opening the car door). Bring along food, water, and treats in a separate container. If your dog is prone to getting carsick, your veterinarian may recommend medication (bringing the dog on a few short "practice" trips may prevent the problem altogether).

CAUTION: Never, for any reason, leave your dog alone in a car. Changes in outdoor temperatures are unpredictable and can lead to stress, hypothermia, heat exhaustion, and worse.

Paul & I have been taking our dogs on road trips forever. Here are a couple of things we have learned.

1. Start taking your dog in the car when he is a puppy. He will get used to it. Our dog, Cooper, thinks the car is his dog house. If I open the back to load or unload, he hops in, lies down and gets ready for the ride.

2. Our dachshund, Frank, is always really curious for the first 10 minutes of the car ride, then he just curls up on my lap and goes to sleep. Let your dog get his ya-yas out in the beginning, then show him who is alpha and make sure he lies down calmly.

3. Be on the look-out for a park, creek or other open and safe area to let your dogs out for a stretch and potty break. We will usually throw a ball or stick for 10 or 15 minutes. If you let them get out and move around every few hours, they will be more relaxed passengers. And don't forget to give them water. It is tempting to avoid water, so you don't have to stop as often, but they get thirsty just like you do.

4. Bring a dog bed or blanket for the car. Your dog will feel more secure on his bed or blanket and it will help keep your car cleaner.

5. If your dog is in the back of the car, make sure there isn't too much sun glaring in through the back windows. It can get really hot back there.

6. Barney, our lab mutt, is 14 years old, so he has difficulty getting in and out of the car on his own. Paul can lift him, so it is not a problem for us. But if you cannot pick up an 80 lb dog, invest in some folding steps and then guide the older dogs up and down the steps.

Snow on Mt Hood Roads & Trails in July!!

It was the winter that would not go away this past year at Mt Hood. We would get a little blast of spring with sunshine and warmer temperatures for a few days, then head back into winter-like weather until mid-June, when a cold winter storm rolled in, depositing 2 feet of snow on the ground at Timberline Lodge (6000 ft elev) and 1 foot of snow in Government Camp (3200-3800 ft elev). The Mt Hood Adventure Park has postponed it's opening to July 9th this year. In normal years, they would have been operating for a full month already. The management just had to be patient and wait for the 5-foot snowpack to melt enough to open the Alpine Slide, Bungee Jump, Go-Carts, Mountain Bike Park plus 25 other attractions.

As of July 5th, the West Leg Road up to Timberline was closed just one mile from Highway 26, due to 3 feet of snow on the roadway. A normally fun, back-country drive from Welches to Hood River, heads up Lolo Pass Road, past Lost Lake and down FS Road 18 to Dee, Parkdale, Dee and finally Hood River is closed due to heavy snow.

Many higher elevation campgrounds are still closed due to heavy snow.

However, there are still lots of options for hiking, biking and camping in the woods this year. And now that July is upon us with longer and warmer days, the snow will melt away in no time.

Ramona Falls Trail FINALLY open despite Patches of Snow

The snow has melted enough to finally open the Ramona Falls Trail. One of the most popular and scenic trails in the Zigzag Ranger District of the Mt Hood National Forest, the trail was closed until last week due to excessive snow and high water in the Sandy River. This past winter's record breaking snowfall coupled with continued snow storms through the middle of June kept the trail under several feet of snow. The warm weather of the past few weeks melted the snow enough to allow opening of the trail. There are still patches of snow in the shade under the trees.

The Sandy River was running too high to install the seasonal bridge that provides access to the trailhead. Several years ago, the Forest Service decided to remove the bridge in the fall and replace it in the spring after several years of wash-outs during the spring high waters.

Ramona Falls trail is a 7 mile round trip, with a gentle climb to the falls, gaining about 1000 feet over 3.5 miles. You can take the loop in either direction, following Ramona Creek to the north and the Sandy River to the south. The beauty of the falls is well worth the hike. The hike does pass through Wilderness area, so no bikes are allowed and dogs must be on a leash.

Nude Sleepwalkers in Hotels

Huh...According to a recent study, Travelodge found there have been more than 400 cases of nude sleepwalkers in the past year, almost all involving men. Conducted in 310 Travelodge hotels, the study found that sleepwalkers wander all over the hotel. In fact, a number had walked to the front desk and asked for a newspaper or to check out!! Sleep experts blame stress, alcohol abuse, lack of sleep and injuries for this unusual behavior. Advice to hotel workers on the night shift includes keeping a supply of towels behind the desk to help preserve a guest's dignity. Advice to people who know they sleepwalk: always wear something to bed when you travel. Or better yet, stay in a Mt Hood Vacation Rental; you won't run into strangers that way.

We came across a really good article with great tips for planning a family reunion. The info is in an E-Newsletter from Upscale Consignment, a used and surplus furniture store in Gladstone, Oregon. (P.S. We have found some great bargains on good quality furniture and home decor at this shop.) Here is a reprint of their advice:

Planning the Perfect Family Reunion

As the summer is quickly approaching, do not delay on planning the perfect family reunion. In addition to being a lot of fun, family reunions provide a great way to catch up with relatives and strengthen family bonds. However, family reunions can be difficult to plan and organizing a successful reunion does take some work. Nevertheless, if you are willing to take the time and are interested in planning a successful reunion, here are a few steps that you may find quite helpful.

First, you will need to decide which family members you are going to invite to the reunion. You may only choose to invite direct family members, such as parents, grandparents, brothers, and sisters. On the other hand, you may choose to expand the reunion to include 2nd and 3rd cousins. Remember, before you get carried away inviting every relative that exists, the bigger the reunion, the more difficult it is going to be to plan.

Second, you may find it helpful to form a small committee. Creating a committee will make organizing the reunion drastically easier for you. With a reliable committee, you will be able to pass some assignments to others and not have to worry about doing all the work by yourself. Then, think about which of the tasks below can be assigned to the different committee members.

Third, it is beneficial to do a quick survey and find out when the best time for the reunion is going to be for the majority of your family. There are likely going to be conflicting schedules with some people, so send out an email with a few dates, asking each family member to list which dates they would be available for the reunion. That way you can plan for a time that works best for everyone.

Fourth, you will need to pick a location. If everybody lives close, just pick a convenient location for you to all meet. If your family is spread out, try to pick a central location so that traveling will not be too much of a burden.

Fifth, you need to find how much you need to budget for the reunion. How much are you and everybody else willing to spend? This will ultimately determine where you go, how long you will be there, the activities you will do, and the food you will eat.

Sixth, you will likely have to reserve a site ahead of time. You might want to reserve rooms in a hotel, a park pavilion, or even a swimming pool.

Finally, once you know the amount of people that will be coming and the budget that everybody is willing to spend, make sure to plan a large variety of activities for everyone. Remember that you will need activities for children as well as adults so that everybody that comes will have an enjoyable time and want to participate in the reunion next year!

Government Camp is reporting 27 degrees.

The snow levels are expected to stay low for the next 5 or 6 days, then the sun will shine and bring us the more classic spring conditions of bluebird days by next weekend.

The snowpack on Mt Hood at 5370 feet is at 216 feet, 148% of normal for this time of year and just 48 inches from the record high snow level according to John Lea, state meteorologist. The good news is that the ski and snowboard season is far from over. And next week is forecast to offer up classic spring conditions, sunny and dry, staying cold enough at night to firm up the snow, warming up just enough during the day to soften the snow into perfect corn conditions.

Snow Kite Boarding on Mt Hood - More Extreme Sports

We keep finding examples of extreme sport enthusiasts doing their thing on Mt Hood. The latest blog we found is of someone named Aaron who Snowkite Snowboarded on Mt Hood for 3 hours on March 16, 2008. The rider (or skier) hangs on to a large kite or small parachute with what looks like a Windsurfer harness and a tow rope for water skis and lets the wind as it catches the kite move him around on the snow. Beware, if you are not a very accomplished skier or snowboarded, you can fall while Snowkiting, in which case your face could end up looking like a road pizza.

Kayakers ride Frustration Falls on the Salmon River at Mt Hood Oregon

Described as the Mt Everest of Oregon kayaking, local boaters made the run down Vanishing Falls, Frustration Falls and Final Falls in the Salmon River Gorge 2 times last spring. The Salmon River Trail is great for hiking and viewing old growth forest and the Salmon River. But for a few really gnarly, very experienced expert kayakers, the hike would not be worth it if they did not have their boats with them for the return trip. Anyway, the photos are really awesome and make it pretty clear that your average person would not or could not attempt this.

A quote from the kayakers' blog discussing the 2nd run in June of 2007: "One more run before it goes away for another year. We decided to camp at the put-in and get up and charge it the next day. So we arived sat. afternoon and proceeded to hike our boats down the trail so we didn't have to deal with it the next day. The next morning we ran shuttle really fast...and made it on the water by 1pm. " and "We had a rope for the rappel at Final Falls, but there were other options that the crew explored. Keel and Jeff jumped off the top and into the pool and Chris Korbulic decided to fire up the main line, just left of the flake in the center of the falls. He over rotated just a little, tossed the paddle and tucked up tight. That was right up there with the sickest lines I've seen. Final Falls is really big and hard to line up. We paddled out and made it before dark."

The Oregon Food Bank (OFB) is the hub of a network of 919 hunger-relief agencies throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington, distributing 752,044 Emergency Food Boxes between July 1, 2006 & June 30, 2007. Did you know that 47% of families receiving food have one person in their household working? And that 37% of the food recipients are children?

The Oregon Great Food Drive has a goal of raising 1 million pounds of food during the month of March. If you won't be able to make it up to Mt Hood on Friday to ski at SkiBowl, there are several other ways you can contribute to Oregon's Great Food Drive.

Donate $10 to OFB. Every $10 you donate enables OFB to provide enough food to help an agency fill an emergency food box -- enough food to feed a family for four days.

Purchase Tillamook Cheese from any retailer. For every pound sold, Tillamook Cheese will donate one cent to the Great Food Drive. Last year, Tillamook's statewide cheese sales resulted in a $16,000 donation to the Great Food Drive. Look for Great Food Drive signs at Albertsons, Fred Meyer and New Seasons Markets. New Seasons Markets will have demonstrations and specials featuring Tillamook Cheese. Customers can also donate food at any New Seasons location or donate cash online at New Seasons Market's Web site.

Donate cash or nonperishable food at KGW's studios, 1501 S.W. Jefferson in Portland.

Skier Base Jumps off Mississippi Head on Mt Hood

Holy Cow!! Check this out...a Spokane Washington man base jumped off of Mississippi Head at the 8000 ft level of Mt Hood on Thursday (Feb 27). He skied down from above, then launched off of Mississippi Head, opened his chute, then landed on his skis and continued down Zig Zag Canyon.

Okay, kids do not try this at home. We have the exciting You Tube video that the base jumper, Matthias Giraud, and his friends took before and during the jump & ski.

Mt Hood Snow Pack is 137 - 288% of Average

According to Oregon State Hydrologist, John Lea, the snowpack at the timberline level of Mt Hood is 137% of average. This is not a record, but it does bode well for skiers and snowboarders. All of this snow is also good news for the summer; for now, there are no concerns about a water shortage for this summer.

Snow measured nearly 10 feet in the Bull Run watershed at the end of January. That's 348 percent of average! By the end of February, the snow had melted down to a wopping 288% of average. Here is a picture of the Bull Run Cabin at the end of January.

Zip up to Mt Hood

One snow storm after another gives good reason to zip on up to Mt Hood for a snowplay day. Temps at the ski areas today are in low teens & low 20's with 9 inches of new snow and sunshine forecast for this afternoon.

When skiing or riding, it's a good idea to zip up with your clothing, too. Wear multiple layers of of zip tops starting with a thin layer closest to your skin. Underarm zips are nice when you are moving and getting hot, helping you to ventilate and cool down. Sweat next to your skin can make you cold when you stop moving to ride a chairlift. What a fantastic Holiday it has been at Mt Hood. The snow just keeps on falling with several new feet of snow sticking at Mt Hood Meadows, Timberline and SkiBowl this week. The temps have been staying low in the teens to low 20's maintaining light, fluffy powder.

Our favorite place to ski or ride this week with all of the new pow' and low temps is SkiBowl. The lower runs are more gentle with wide consistent fall lines and the upper bowls are long, steep & deep for the adrenaline junkies. Make sure you visit the mid-mountain warming hut, a charming historic log building with a massive rock fireplace. "Built in 1935, the Warming Hut offers a refreshing rest at the top of Skibowl’s Lower Bowl. Stop in for a cold beer, hot sandwich or traditional goulash by a crackling fire."

The holidays are here and Mother Nature is treating us to some awesome deep powder snow conditions. The ski areas have experienced 2-3 feet of new snow in the past 48 hours with about a foot more expected over the weekend. Paul went to SkiBowl yesterday and said it was waist deep off the groomers and about 8 inches of new on top of the groomed runs.

Cascade Christmas Party

The annual party was last night at Cedarwood Lodge and we did have a good time. We hired Busy Bee Catering to prepare the food which was awesome. We recommend them for your catering needs. One of the highlights was early on when Paul spilled beer on his pants, so was prancing around in a towel until he got them dried. Glen is always a fun to have around, keeping us entertained. Then the white elephant gift exchange was a hoot as always. Later on, Paul & Cec started dancing around the kitchen. Well, we are all a bit tired today to get our photos together, so stay posted for updates.

Mt Hood Ski Areas are Open

Most ski areas in the western states are still not open due to lack of snow, not the case at Mt Hood. Mt Hood Meadows, Timberline & SkiBowl are up and running this weekend. If you are planning a winter snowplay vacation, contact us about staying in a Mt Hood Vacation Rental. We have some good availability now through December 21st, so you can ski, ride, cross-country ski, snowshoe, sled or build snowmen before the holiday crowds arrive.

Mt Hood Meadows, 22°, 11" new snow in the last 24 hours, 42" base, currently snowing, 6 lifts running, no night skiing

Timberline, 17°, 11" new snow in the last 24 hours, 39" base, currently snowing, 4 lifts running, no night skiing

Mt Hood SkiBowl, 24°, 10" new snow in the last 24 hours, 35" base, currently snowing, 4 lifts running, night skiing only

6-12 inches of new snow is expected in the next 24 hours!!

Christmas & New Year's Eve Reservations are Sold Out

Mt Hood Vacation Rentals are booked solid from December 22 - January 2nd. However, there are some great opportunities to stay in a Mt Hood Vacation Rental now through the 22nd or in January & February. It has been snowing on & off for several days now with about 2 feet of new snow and another foot or more expected in the next few days.

Paul & Jan Marc are at Meadows today, making turns, so we will give you an update of their adventures later on today.

We have good availability this weekend including Cedarwood Lodge in Government Camp for larger groups or Henry Creek Cabin in Rhododendron for smaller families or couples.

And we now have discounted lift tickets available for Timberline and Mt Hood Meadows for all of our guests. You save $15-20 per person per day on lift tickets. Not bad.
