Scottie dogs accused of soiling governor's carpets

Kathleen O'Brien, a columnist for the New Jersey Star Ledger, has leapt to the defense of former Governor Christine Todd Whitman's Scottish Terriers. The doges were accused by Dina Matos, Whitman's successor's wife, of having soiled the carpets in Drumthwacket, the governor's mansion, so badly they had to be replaced.

Complete and utter claptrap Whitman's spokeswoman, Heather Grizzle, told O'Brien. "They had one of their dogs down for a week, and they realized it didn't work out, and they never brought it to Drumthwacket again."

The dog, a Scottish terrier named Tokai, resumed living at Pontefract, the Whitman family estate. Whitman's dog pack also includes Coors, the mother of first dog Barney, who was given as a gift to President George W. Bush just before he named Whitman administrator of the EPA.

With Ashley's adoption, I succeeded in adding to my work load and subtracting from our bank account. We had no idea a Scottie would need so many visits to the groomer. And appointments with the vet, while vital, were budget busters nearly every time.

But who could deny the sheer joy that little mutt brought? Here she was, entered into the Muddy Frogwater Kiddie Parade, wearing a frog costume and toting a beaming child. There she was, tuckered out from a family walk and headed for home in the stroller while Daddy carried the baby.

So, admit it, you thought that a website called the Scottish Terrier and Dog News was already pretty specialized. Well, yes and no. Scottie News discovered today that there's a whole sub-culture out there of decorators and romantic home-lovers with Scotties.

Check out Lavender Fields and Mr. Tweed's Whimsy and then get back to us to let us know if you think Mr. Tweed could possibly be straight. According to Lavender Fields, his owner Pat says she named the business after him "because because he has always shown an interest in wonderful fabrics and tapestries - and how luxurious they feel." Hmmm.

Scottish Terrier would make great door stop

Tippy is one of the Pittsburgh puppies and he's now 14 weeks old. His owner writes on Flickr that he "has taken to sitting on his bum for extended periods of time. Often he rests his paw on the side of his pen but can easily sit without the brace."

And speaking of Scottie puppies, the Scottish Terrier and Dog News has recently created a puppy category complete with all sorts of very cute photos and video.

The Orange County Register reports on how to ensure that your dogs will be cared for if you die before they do:

Suzan Snider's 7-year-old Scottish terrier is much loved. Snider and her husband think the world of the white dog and want only the best for him. But there was a problem.

"I have a family that would not take him," Snider said. "You think you're going to outlive your pets. … I have two daughters, and neither one would take him. They have kids, and he's not too kid-friendly."

Snider eventually decided to leave money to a friend to care for Duffy.

"I figured how much it would cost," she told the OC Register. Figuring that Duffy would live to be 15 ("That's pretty average"), she looked at the costs of grooming, food and vet care, and set that amount aside for her friend to use for his care in the will she created on ItsMyLife.com.

Of course, you shouldn't just leave money to a friend without discussion. Whether you're using a will or a pet trust to provide for your pet, it's vital to talk to the people who will be charged with the pet's care. Make sure they're willing to take on the task.

Scottish Terrier-owning blogger, Julie of Bricolage, is picking up her new wheaten Scottie puppy this weekend and in anticipation of the big day, she has a nostalgic post on Children's Scottie books complete with lots of fabulous illustrations. The books featured are Angus and the Cat, Angus and the Ducks, and Angus Lost, all by Marjorie Flack, as well as Jock and Jill, illustrated by Morgan Dennis and written by Maida Huneker.

The Angus books are all available on Amazon, but Jock and Jill, alas, is not.

The Scottish Terrier and Dog News is on the record as saying we do not believe there's any proof whatsoever that Hitler had a Scottish Terrier. Today, however, we received an e-mail from an anonymous source that said:

Hitler did have a Scottie. The existence of Burli and his relationship to der Fuhrer are explained in diaries of a secretary, and Goebbels. The explanations are summarized by David Irving, Hitler’s War (Viking Press, 1977) at pp. 374-5.

“’There is also a Scotch terrier, but he is not all that popular as he is obstinate and capricious (besides which the Chief says he looks like a scrub brush and he’d never let himself be photographed with it…’ Goebbels found the terrier still being given the run of Hitler’s bunker at the end of March. ‘At present there is no creature closer to him,’ observed the propaganda minister.”

Two points:

Holocaust deniers like Irving have a major credibility problem with me -- even when they're dealing with Scottish Terriers.

Westie nabs role of Toto in new London production

Siân Brooke, who will play Dorothy, told the Times of London she is worried that Bobby, the West Highland Terrier, might upstage her.

The original Toto (left) was a Cairn although many mistakenly believe he was a Scottish Terrier.

Over the years there have even been rumours that Toto was supposed to have been a Dachshund, but lost the role due to anti-German sentiment.

Break a leg, Bobby. We'll be waiting for the reviews after opening night next week.

Back in the eighties, when the Scotiie News editor lived in Hong Kong, the minute you stepped off dog-protecting British soil and onto the ferry to Canton, there was an announcement that dog meat was being served in the ship's restaurant.

Martha Stewart's daily dog grooming tips

All I can say is thank gawd Martha Stewart has French Bulldogs and not Scottish Terriers, because then I would feel even more inadequate about my Scottie grooming regimen -- or lack thereof.

I'm not sure whether it's a good thing or a bad thing that, with all her multi-millions, Martha still clips the dogs' nails herself and wipes their bums.
