Bon Worth Fashion Show!

On May 21, Grand Villa was host to 93 people who enjoyed our 2nd annual Bon Worth Fashion Show. Thanks to Senior Home Care, Bask Rehab and Bon Worth for contributing prizes for the event. Thanks to Savage Jewelry for a beautiful display.

Tennis, Golf, Bowling Anyone? You Bet!
Have you heard of the Wii? It's an interactive digital game system played on a TV.

If you visit Grand Villa on Thursday afternoons you'll see our residents throwing a bowling ball, swinging a golf club and serving a tennis ball — all with a digital controller. The best part of the system is almost everyone can play. Players report they get a workout, too. Yep, it's a lot of fun and games at Grand Villa!

Join us for a trip to the movies to see “The Bucket List” at 1:55 pm. $4.00 ticket price. Stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to do all the things they have ever wanted to do according to their bucket list. In the process, both of them heal each other, become unlikely friends, and ultimately find the joy in life.

Icicles in Florida?!

Brrr! The water in the decorative fountain by our entrance was stopped cold by overnight low temperatures. Residents were surprised to discover icicles in Florida this morning.

The cold weather is expected to last a couple more days with lows in the 30s and highs in the upper 50s. Temperatures in the 70s are predicted for the weekend.

Grand Villa residents and staff enjoyed the sights and sounds of the 35th Annual Pinellas Park Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 8, beginning at 6 pm. The illuminated parade began at Park Blvd. and 58th Street and proceeded east on Park Boulevard. Bands, floats, clowns, marching, equestrian and car units, along with Santa made the parade a festive event!

Trick or Treat?!
Residents thought it was a treat when they were greeted by Alice in Wonderland, The Good Witch of Grand Largo, Sister Betty, Brother Don, Angelic Mary Jean and Utterly Great Wendy on Halloween. Staff dressed in costume to celebrate the last day of October. (More Halloween staff photos in previous post.)

On Sunday, November 2 at 2:00 am, Daylight Savings Time is officially over. Don't forget to turn back your clock one hour. Enjoy your extra hour.

Bluegrass Strings and Crafty Things

Our Grand Villa residents, families and staff attended the Third Annual Bluegrass Strings and Crafty Things Festival in Largo Central Park in October.

The two day festival offered authentic Bluegrass music, food, a craft show, petting zoo, square dancing, children's games, train rides, historic craft demonstrations, and gorgeous weather!

Heroes Breakfast
Grand Villa was pleased and proud to serve a Heroes Breakfast to local police, fire and emergency services personnel on Tuesday, September 11. Eleven local heroes attended. Thanks again to all our heroes. We appreciate all you do for us (see story below).

Let's Just Call It a Fire Drill, Shall We?
On Friday September 7, during Happy Hour, fire alarms sounded inside Grand Villa of Largo. This triggered immediate action by the staff.

Residents were directed out of the building to safety. Those who couldn't walk alone were carried by staff. In minutes all 127 residents were evacuated from the two-story building.

John Moschner, an executive director from the corporate office, was on the scene within four minutes. As he reached Grand Villa he saw two fire engines, two fire chief cars, one ambulance and two police cars.

"However, " John reported, "the most rewarding find was 127 residents already evacuated from the building. I asked the firefighters if the evacuation was initiated prior to their arrival. They responded, 'Are you kidding? It was one of the best evacuations we've seen! The staff did 100% of the evacuation.' "

John says he will always remember the smell of the burnt microwave brownie that caused the alarm. But more importantly, he was absolutely thrilled by the quick reactions and implementation of the fire evacuation procedures.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation go out to the entire Grand Villa team. Also, special thanks to the fire and emergency departments for their fast and reassuring response.

Music and Ice Cream
Twenty-two Grand Villa residents enjoyed a concert by The Haloes at Elmer Park on Friday evening, September 7. Monique treated each attendee to an ice cream sundae!

The residents of Grand Villa will invite several area preschools to trick or treat at our community during the day on Halloween. Residents will hand out candy. Refreshments will be provided.

Hurricane Season Preparedness

Hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30.

Evolving Emergency Plans
Each year Grand Villa updates our emergency plans to meet and exceed state requirements. In 2004 and 2005 multiple hurricanes put us to the test. We’re happy to report our emergency plans worked well under pressure. The busy hurricane season taught us new strategies which we incorporated into this year’s plans.

Prepare Now
Everyone is advised to prepare a personal emergency kit—a small bag or case—to take with you if an evacuation is necessary. Your kit should include medicines, toiletries, shoes, clothes, a list of contact names and phone numbers, important paperwork and valuables such as jewelry and photographs. Pack enough for a two night stay.

Designate a Contact
Designate a contact name and phone number outside the area where you reside. Phone service in areas surrounding a hurricane can be interrupted for several days. Choose a family member or friend in another state as a contact to relay information in case telephones are out of service.

Our Preparedness Plans Include:

Generators to run the air conditioning, electricity and operate the kitchen during power outages
Food and water supplies
Evacuation plans that include transportation to another senior living community in a non-evacuation zone
Medication Supervision
Nurse on staff
Month to month rentals available during hurricane season

A Hurricane Checklist for Everyone

Know what zone you live in, and if you have to evacuate.
Check if flashlights and other emergency lights work.
Buy extra batteries.
Get cash.

The History of Flag Day
Flag Day is observed on June 14 of every year. The observance began on June 14, 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the following resolution.

“Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. (Stars represent Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island)” Source: www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagfact.html

History of Father’s Day
The first Father’s Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

The United States Flag Code and Flag Etiquette
The United States Flag Code, which was adopted in 1923, describes the following rules for proper flag protocol:
• Always display the flag with the field of blue in the upper left-hand corner. To display it upside down is considered a distress signal.
• It should be carried aloft and free, never flat or horizontally.
• The flag should always be kept clean and safe; never let it become torn, soiled or damaged.
• The flag should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
• Always treat the flag with respect. Never embroider it on household items or pieces of clothing.
• People who are unable to dispose of the flag in the prescribed manner should contact their nearest American Legion or VFW post. Most usually have an annual ceremony in which old and worn flags are properly destroyed (usually on Flag Day, June 14th).
