On March 9 in downtown San Rafael the Marin community came togther to voice their opposition to the Homeland Security ICE raids recently being carried out in Marin. This is one of many planned actions in response to the terrorizing activities of the ICE agents.

On March 9, 2007 at 5 am over 75 people gathered in the Canal Neighborhood of San Rafael to stand witness over the Homeland Securitys I.C.E. terrorist activities. For over a week Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been pulling people out of their homes, cars and workplaces in the name of their mean spirited Return to Sender campaign. A seven year old child, an American citizen, was handcuffed and arrested and eventually separated from his parents. The Canal Watch vigils will continue on weekdays until I.C.E. stops their terrorist activities. On March 12 at 6 pm there will be a community meeting at the Canal Pickleweed Center, 50 Canal St. San Rafael.

Canal Community Responds to Homeland Security ICE raids

Upcoming Actions in response to ICE raids

In response to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Raids that have been taking place in San Rafael, Novato, and other locations, there are several upcoming actions.

Vigil – Marin Interfaith Council – Friday, March 9th– 5:00 AM to 9:30 AM

The Marin Interfaith Council would like to hold vigils in San Rafael and Novato in the early morning hours when the raids have been taking place. They are seeking at least 50 leaders to stand vigil in the Canal neighborhood and in Novato to say "we are here, we are watching, we are in solidarity."

There are various levels of participation:
Stand vigil with a candle or flashlight to be present for raids, as well as provide safe passage for children to leave their homes to attend school
Stand vigil with candle/flashlight and bring a camera or video camera to document activities
Stand vigil with candle/flashlight and be willing to accompany an ICE official to the door as s/he issues their arrest warrants and practice being a silent observer/witness

1) Provide information about the current situation and learn from residents about their experiences
2) Implement effective plans about what to do at home, at school, at work in order to minimize the impact of these immigration raids
3) Develop policy and other strategies to stop the raids

We are inviting all concerned citizens from all sectors of Marin County including residents, government, schools, and community organizations.

We will form action teams to implement strategic responses to stop these raids.

San Rafael's Canal Boat Parade of Lights

This year the Canal Parade of Lights became an official fundraiser for Community Action Marin. Enjoy the parade and send to friends. Are you on one of the boats?

Russ Hamel one of the Directors of Community Action Marin wrote:

We're Marin County's oldest and largest providers of social services (1966). We operate 16 programs at 28 different sites throughout the county (Marin Head Start, early child development programs, food programs, mental health, senior employment programs and on and on. This year we decided to give the boat parade a shot at being a "formal" city parade as well as a fundraiser for Community Action Marin. Six weeks prior to the parade we formed a committee to get the ball rolling. We never expected this to be the pageant that took place on the 16th!!! Over 80 boats, and thousands of citizens lined the canal in what was the largest lighted boat parade in Northern California. It was a success beyond our wildest dreams.

It would not have happened without the efforts of Loch Lomond Yacht Club, Marin Yacht Club, San Rafael Yacht Club, specifically:

Community Action Marin (CAM) benefited in several ways. We did raise much needed funds, but more importantly we set a president that CAM will be the annual sponsor of a wonderful county wide event. Second, we gave the City of San Rafael and Marin County one of most incredible holiday parades in its history. We'll be back next year, all of us, bigger, better, and in the spirit of giving once again. Hats off to all the boat owners, sponsors, and participants that made Community Action Marin Lighted Boat Parade 2006 a success. And thanks to you Jimmy for letting the rest of the world know that Marin County maritime community isn't a bunch of rich guys with boats... their an incredible group of caring men and women who continually make a difference in the way underserved and low income families, individuals, and children in our county live. Kudos on the video!
