Working on a new project

Hi all! :-) Just wanted to let you know that I'm working on a new project these days - but it's very exciting! We're releasing some new songs soonishly as well that I am really excited to share with you!!

We'll be releasing the new tracks late summer/early fall, and in the meanwhile, will be embarking on some really cool summer touring in our region.

New projects will be announced in the fall.

OMG! I've been everywhere else but this blog! :-)

Well, if you're looking for me on the internet, I'm all over on Facebook, Reverbnation, MySpace, Twitter and I think I'm found in a few other places as well. Well, since there's just one of me and we're currently working on new material and reorganizing projects - it takes a bit longer to get to each thing at the moment. I have been thinking of you though - wondering if the people who loyally follow this blog are wondering if I've fallen off the face of the earth.

Well, nooooo --- but as said, we've been busy writing new material - helping some other bands out, and working on a couple of cool new projects. The website will be changing soon too!

Anyway, if you want to touch base, please feel free to add me as a friend on any of the social networks! I'd love to talk to you any time! Thanks so much for your support and yes, we will soon have some new tracks for you to listen to --- they are super cool! Can't wait to share them with you!

October 2008 - News

Hi there! It's October and just wanted to wish you a very happy Autumnal season! Get out and jump in some leaves and breathe in the spicy air (well, if you are in a climate that has autumn! :-))! We are in the midst of working on new material still -- being creative! But it's very exciting stuff!!! Can't wait to share it with you!

Also, letting anyone from Victoria or who might be in Victoria on Saturday, October 18th -- there will be a brief CSB/Crimson Star siting at the Octofest at Hermann's Jazz Club on View Street. Doors are 7:30pm and show gets rolling at 8pm. Tickets are $8 in advance (you can get them at Lyle's or online at www.cornerstonecollectiverecords.com), or $10 at the door. Also featured that evening will be CSB bandmates, Pauline Edwards and Adam Basterfield showcasing some of their own material and projects. Lots of bands, lots of fun! Hope to see you there!!

Catching Up - September News

Hi there! Hope you've had a great summer! We have certainly been busy! Caroline Spence Band is now called 'CRIMSON STAR' - check out the new website at www.crimsonstarband.com -- we're in the process of writing new material for a new album and putting together all the creative stuff for launching an all-new band. The core members are still myself, Pauline Edwards and Adam Basterfield. We were just tired of calling our mutual efforts with just my name. Or mostly, I was tired of that - lol! :-) Anyway, we're excited about it and will be working on that project this fall.

This website will be updated to promote my many various projects, and hopefully be more of a creative outlet for me to spout news, views, and songwriting tidbits. Which might be more interesting than it is now. So I hope you will check back and keep in touch. Please join our mailing list, if you haven't already.

March News 2008

Hi everyone who pops by to read this! :-) Thanks for your support!

This month we've been pretty busy with being in the studio starting the recording process and.... with this Sam Roberts contest!!! We actually made it into the finals!! Now we just need to get the most votes to win the whole thing! Starting tonight, March 25th - people should be able to log on to the www.mazdamusictour.com site to vote for us. Each e-mail address counts as a vote - so vote with all your e-mail addresses! You can vote again each day of the contest all the way to April 4th. If you can spread the word too, that would be a super help! By winning, we will get to open for Sam Roberts in our own city -- so that means a free show in Victoria on April 11th!!! Also, we would get some studio time and Mazda might promote the song we do in the studio!

Anyway, your help is appreciated!!

What else is new on the horizon, etc.? We have been asked to showcase at NewMusicWest in May! That will be so much fun! The show will be in Vancouver and we'll have more details soon.

Well folks, thanks to all of you who voted for us - we've made it to the next stage in the Mazda Music Tour Contest!! The prize is that we'll get to open for the Sam Roberts Band at a FREE concert he'll play locally, if we win! Yep, we get to have a free Sam Roberts concert AND get to open for him. AND they also give let you record one of your songs at a top notch local studio on their time. SWEET! :-)

So here's what has to happen for us to win the next stage:

ON SATURDAY, MARCH 15th, 2008 - we need you to go to www.mazdamusictour.com and VOTE for the Caroline Spence Band. Each e-mail address is a vote. Hi everyone who reads this blog! :-) We've had quite an exciting month - and looks to get even more exciting through March!

First off -- we went to Whistler and opened for Melissa Ferrick at the Whistler Pride Week celebrations! It was super awesome - great people, great sound, great stage! What a great show! Melissa Ferrick was absolutely phenomenal as well -- highly recommend checking her out! She was Ani di Franco's opening act on her recent tour.

Our set went really well. It was the three of us, and it was a big, open sound that really brought out the loveliness of what everyone was doing. The vocal harmonies were beautiful, and the violin and guitar solos were impressive! Polly and Adam really were awesome. I wore a corset type top and couldn't bend over very well - but other than that, had a fine time performing! :-) So much fun! The audience was really receptive, funny and awesome! I hope we get invited next year! (did I use too many exclamation marks? I think I might have!! See? LOL!)

We've been working on the Cornerstone Collective Records label that we mentioned last month - had a really great launch -- and a fundraiser gig this month that was just so much fun. We're doing it again next month, March 21st - so save the date. I made a really awesome spinach lasagne - I was so proud of myself. Yeah, we all brought food to share included in the price - yummy! The Fernwood Community Centre has a lovely living room that we held the event in. Really cosy, and we made it so pretty with lights and material. One of the better 'intimate' stages I've played. The sound was just awesome! We had Brad Hawkes come out and join our set with his 'cajon' drum - it's like a box that he sits on and plays. Very cool! Thanks, Brad! :-)

Some of you know that we're so far placed first in a contest to have a chance to open for the Sam Roberts Band - AND bring the Sam Roberts Band to play a show here in VICTORIA!!!! How cool is that!! Well, we have to win it first, to get his band to play in Victoria - whoever wins gets the band to play wherever they are. SOOOOO -- for those who have been voting everyday with all their e-mail addresses, we THANK YOU! For those who just read this -- go to http://www.mazdamusictour.com/en/profile.php?id=116 and vote for us. This is a spam free contest -- whoohoo! So you have no worries entering your email as all the info gets deleted after the contest. I read the fine print! :-)

We'll find out for sure if we're going to get to go to the semi-finals by the end of this month, so we'll let you know what's going on from there! But exciting stuff indeed! YAY!

And in March, we will be starting to record a new album. Looking forward to that process - and finally getting some new stuff out to you!

January Updates

Well, we're off to a bright start this year with lots of cool stuff on the horizon. First off, we'd like to thank you so much for your support over the years, including this past one! It means a lot to us.

Up next -- some shows!

Cornerstone Anniversary Party -- 1 year of goodness coming from the musical epi-centre of Fernwood - the Cornerstone Cafe. We'll be celebrating Saturday, January 26th starting at 7:30pm. Come on down and hear some of the best from the Fernwood music scene - and celebrate the launch of Cornerstone Cafe Records! Free - PLUS CAKE! Yum!

THEN - we're heading up to Whistler for the Whistler PrideWeek Celebrations on the weekend of February 8th. We'll be opening for Melissa Ferrick (who will be opening for Ani diFranco on her upcoming tour). Should be tons o' fun! If you're going, let us know so we can connect with you there. Next up after that will be a couple of local shows, one on February 15 and one in March for to celebrate the launch of our new collective label endeavour with a bunch of other indie artists. The two shows will be acoustic house concert/party events to raise funds to help build the label and promote local musicians. Both will be at the Fernwood Community Centre in the 'living room' in front of the fire. We'll have a potluck and lots of great entertainment. More details soon!

Other community items:

CSB will be featured on the Carolwood fundraiser compilation and will have a spot in their summer festival

We'll be playing a benefit show in March to help bring awareness to homelessness issues in our city. More details soon!

What's up next for the band:

Recording a shiny new studio album - set for release Summer 2008. This will feature the song, 'I Do' that so many of you raved about on our Wyld Lily Tour!

Playing a number of festivals and shows in Canada and the UK over the summer and fall of 2008!

January 2008 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year to you! Hope it is a wonderful year for you, this brand new 2008! :-)

Just want to let you know that our performance on CFAX 1070 to celebrate the new year went swimmingly well! Hope you were able to listen in either on the radio or online this morning. Some of Victoria's most exciting acts all performed for a 5 hour block today, and shared stories of their new year's traditions. Lots of fun! Thanks to James Kasper for co-hosting as well as inviting us! :-)

Lots of great stuff planned for the year ahead! Festivals, shows, recordings! We're looking forward to 2008. We're performing a more rootsy, acoustic show this year with a more 'organic' flavour, focusing on the 3-part harmony vocals and instrumentation.

RIP Franco :-(

For those of you following the Caroline Spence Band - you will know that we had a doggie named Franco as a bandmate for a number of years. Our dear canine friend (and ex-bandmate Ken's son) passed away recently. He was one of those dogs that is so smart and handsome and wonderful, you just count him amongst your friends. Rest in peace, Franco. We love you.

Back from the festival tour across Canada and it ROCKED! Thanks to all the people who helped us with places to stay and food! To all those who came out to the shows and partied with us! And to all the venues who were so awesome to us! THANKS!! YOU ROCK!! :-)

It was great fun -- we went all the way from Victoria to Cape Breton and back again - Pacific Ocean to Atlantic (and jelly fish season - ugh!!). Great to meet some cool new artists and commune with others we have loved over the years.

New CSB Line-Up

Hi there, everyone who follows this blog!

We've had a pretty tough few months lately. Two of our bandmates fathers passed away recently, and we've all been reviewing our lives and what we want to do as individuals and what we can do with the band.

We've always been a touring band with a focus on making our music into a career. But sometimes you just come to the realization that what you think you want and what really works in your life are two different things. With a summer tour on the horizon, Ken, John and Ursula realized that they just want to remain local performers and want to focus on other musical projects they have on tap.

Polly, Adam and I are still on board for touring and creating music together. We are looking forward to the creative challenge and to furthering our aims to make our music our long-term career.

We want to thank Ken, John and Ursula for all that they brought to the band and wish them well in their new musical explorations and challenges!

Hi there, folks! Ok... I am slowly but surely getting all of the websites up to date. We just played a show at Logan's, a local hangout here in Victoria, just the other day with Seven Year Old Poets. They were great. It was lots of fun!

We've got another show coming up in November -- but in the meanwhile, we're working on getting songs done. Yep, working on recording a full album is our current project.

Plus, I'm trying to get all the web stuff up to date. We're all going to be hanging out at the new website www.carolinespenceband.com - so that will soon be changing into the band site. So keep an eye out - more is coming to the web o'sphere soon!

GLORIOUS BANDNESS!!!

Hi there! It's been a while - sorry I've been remiss on the updates! We've been super busy - and I'm going to get the sites all updated asap! It's weird - no updates - yet SOOOOO much has happened! So lots to catch up on. I hope you've had a great summer! We sure had a great summer - we did a crazy tour across the country along with Shauna Major - it was super great! And then we came back and went to Wells for the Arts Wells Festival - and that was great fun too! Lots of photos are on their way!

Right now, the band is hard at work getting this year's planning underway. We are planning on recording a full-length cd - and doing more touring next summer. So we've got our noses to the grindstone -- but more cool stuff coming soon.

The IMA Showcase at Fernfest - June 11 - 2006

History in the making! It was a great show, though I heard that people couldn't really hear me singing. I couldn't hear much myself - but I still had fun! It was a great day and our set went over really well. It was a joy to be performing with everyone and everyone sounded really incredibly great. We also got interviewed by Shaw Cable - so that was good too!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to come out and see the show -- and to all of our friends who took pictures, video, etc. Wow! There must be at least 500 images from a 25 minute set -- haha -- we went from no pics to a mazillion! Thanks!!!! :D That is so awesome!

Well, more soon - as we build to the big tour....

I got a chance to drive the official tour van around the other day - just imagining what fun it will be to have everyone there, and be off on adventures across this vast and wonderous country of ours! It will be great!

Island Music Awards - festival showcase -- June 11th - Fernwood and Gladstone as part of Fernfest! 1pm!

Island Music Awards Night - Caroline is a presenter! June 17th - 7pm onward - into after party after 11pm.

TOUR -- tour tour tour!!! Exciting stuff - the shows are booked, except for one last one in Penticton. Check out the tour listings to see where - and if you are in the area, come on out and see us! We'd love to give you a big hug!!!

MAY NEWS!

Hi everyone! Happy May Day! :D

Hope you are finding Spring renewal and wonder in your heart, if not actually in the weather. I am blessed to live in Victoria, where we have flowers all year round. It is not always warm, but for the most part, it is sunny a lot of the time - and very beautiful. I live near the ocean, and am surrounded by trees. We actually have a lot of palm trees near where I live too, but they are not natural - that's just 'showing off' - haha! We do have arbutus trees though, and they are pretty cool.

Anyway, hope this message finds you all well. I know lots of people come to the site, so if you happen upon this news, I just want to send you a big hug and a wish for a wonderful day!

Spring, spring, spring -- lots of wonderfulness happening in and around the band. This is probably one of the best groups of people I've ever had the pleasure of working with - ie. they put up with my quirks. :D In fact, Ken, the drummer is starting to speak in my weird hand signal language, and it's actually making sense to me! haha

Lots happening with the band. We have been auditioning guitarists for the past number of months, and will be announcing the new personage soon! We are also working with a top-notch arranger to help hone and polish songs. We have been working at putting together a great show, with great songs, ready to take out on the road to share with you. We are planning our summer touring schedule - and making plans for recording and touring for next year already! Lots of great stuff in the works!

Some of the new songs are really great. If you've been a long-time fan, you know that I write in mixed genres - I'll write anything from a poetic soundscape piece to a jazz/blues piece and any kind of fusion in-between, all with my jangly guitar filling in the holes. Although, with the band, the jangly guitar will soon be a thing of the past for most stuff. Some of the newest stuff seems to be going kind of jazzy -- and it's pretty cool. We have a new song, 'Cry' that is pretty great. I can't wait for you to hear it!

There are very cool and eclectic vocal harmonies in the songs, which are really highlighted in another new song, 'To be heard' - we call this the 'Cigarettes and Coffee Song' - so you'll know which one, when you hear it. Though the only one of us who smokes is Ken. Giant cigars. Oh, Ken! But I do have my Tim Horton's fix. So he's got the smoking, and I've got the coffee covered. :D

There's lots more coming.... so stay tuned!

APRIL NEWS

Hey there, folks! Well, more news on the Island Music Award Nomination. There was an error in the local music paper, we were only nominated for one - Best Live Performance! That's pretty cool though!!

Anyway, we'll let you know more about that as we get closer to the events in June. We are currently planning our summer touring schedule. We will be heading across Canada once again, but only for a brief stint. And continuing regional touring through the summer with the full band too!

The music is really coming together well with the whole band. WOW! It is so exciting and I can't wait for you to hear it! With that in mind, this website will be changing over the next number of months into a 'band' website, rather than just promoting lil ol' me anymore. I put this together last year to promote the EP. But now, there is a band of wonderful performers and some new songs and lots of nifty new stuff we can start putting on the site. Like photos of the band! Eventually, it will all come together.

Lots of cool stuff in the works!

MARCH NEWS! Probably Pt 1

Hi there, Everyone who comes to visit, especially our visitors from Europe who came in droves last month! Thanks! Someday, we hope to make it out that way to meet you all and give you great big thank you hugs! :D

Anyway -- it's March 1st, the cherry trees are blossoming all around here in the city of Victoria, and I just finished putting together a rough demo of a new song, "Living Like Garbo" -- it's the song that I had to write about the album that I'm working on called "Living Like Garbo" -- haha! :D So, I just finished that and feel pretty good about getting it done.

Band stuff is coming along well. We are still looking for a talented and special guitar player to come and join our group. Hey, if you are out there, lovely guitar player person, looking for us, we are looking for you too. :D

Other than that -- we have some new people that have come to the band that I want to introduce to you. There's Polly, Laura and Ursula who have brought their incredible talents and lovely personalities to the band.

Polly plays violin like a magical gypsy lass and sings like an angel -- and is radiant with creative energy and laughter.

Laura, one of the friendliest people you will ever meet, has a talent for creating harmonies, and an unique and luminous voice that dances.

Ursula, another kind and lovely person, has a sweet, breathy voice and a talent for rapping, plays jazz keyboards with her own flair, and adds a unique 'urban' sound to the mix.

All three are stellar human beings with gorgeous smiles and positive attitudes, and tons of talent. They have such special gifts to bring to the world, I feel honoured to work with them, and be a part of creating something really special together.

John, who plays bass, can also sing - and all of us together are creating harmonic tapestries that I can't wait for you to hear.

We are working up a bunch of songs and hope to get out there and play for you soon!

Lots of other exciting opportunities are currently in the works. I can't wait to share it all with you -- but I must leave something for the next installment. :D

Thank you, thank you, thank you -- all of you out there who are so supportive and sending positive energy this way. You have our heartfelt gratitude. :D I've always wanted to be able to inspire other people to follow their dreams somehow. I try to live that every day of my life, but I'm certainly far from perfect. And sometimes life sends amazing reminders that it really does want us to create something beautiful for others. So don't give up! :D
