Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools get into basketball full-time this week with a full slate of games. The highlight tonight is a meeting of state powers at East Mecklenburg.

Vance's boys, ranked No. 5 in the Sweet 16, visits 2008 N.C. 4A champ East Mecklenburg.

On Tuesday, No. 16 Harding visits No. 8 West Charlotte boys in one of the city's best rivalries.

Shelby wins 2A state soccer title

CARY -- Jerry Zeller's goal in the 77th minute proved to be the game winner as the Golden Lions of Shelby slipped past Pittsboro Northwood 2-1 in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men's soccer championship Saturday night at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Zeller's goal broke a 1-1 tie after Northwood had knotted the game just three minutes earlier and the game appeared to be headed toward overtime. Zeller, a diminutive sophomore midfielder, was voted the Most Valuable Player in the final.

Shelby opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Northwood had trouble clearing the ball and Kevin Petty was credited with the Golden Lion goal. It stayed 1-0 until the 74th minute, as Northwood's Sam Lucier tallied off a throw-in to tie the game and set the stage for Zeller's
heroics.

Shelby was in the NCHSAA finals for the second consecutive year and ended the season 23-3-1, going 18-0-1 in its final 19 games. The Golden Lions took five one-goal decisions in the playoffs, including a dramatic penalty kick triumph over Surry Central in the Western Regional final.

Northwood got past Swansboro 1-0 on Friday night in a rain-delayed Eastern Regional final to advance to the state championship match for the first time. The Chargers had a 14-match winning streak snapped to end at 19-3-2 after going 21-3-2 a year ago and losing in the regional
final.

Marvin Ridge wins 3A state soccer title

Senior all-state forward Matt Risher scored in the first minute of sudden death overtime to lift Waxhaw Marvin Ridge to a
thrilling 2-1 victory over Chapel Hill in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men's soccer championship Saturday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Risher, with a goal and an assist, was named the Most Valuable Player of the final.

The teams battled to a 1-1 draw through 80 minutes of regulation play and then two 10-minute overtime periods before moving into sudden death.

After a scoreless first half, Kole Patterson tallied off a pass from Risher in the 43rd minute to give Marvin Ridge a 1-0 lead. But the Tigers battled back to tie it in the 63rd minute when Jamie Dell scored on a header and set the stage for the extra time.

In sudden death, Risher scored his 23rd goal of the season on an assist from Garrett Condon to end the contest and give the Mavericks their first men's soccer state championship.

Marvin Ridge ended the season with a 20-match winning streak and the Mavericks wound up with a 22-2-1 record. One of the newer schools in the NCHSAA, Marvin Ridge was in only its third trip ever into
postseason play.

Chapel Hill, which finished 19-8-1, had an unusual trip to the championship match, its first since 1983. The Tigers battled
Jacksonville in the Eastern Regional final on Wednesday night, but after 80 minutes in steady rain the officials deemed the field to be unplayable to continue. That meant that Chapel Hill had to go back to Onslow County to complete the game with the previously unbeaten Cardinals, and on Friday night the Tigers finished the contest with a 2-1 overtime victory to advance
to Saturday's state final.

Butler-East Meck quarterfinal to be played at Butler

Friday's N.C. 4AA quarterfinal between unbeaten Butler and Southwestern 4A conference rival East Mecklenburg will be played at Butler, athletics director Jim Boone said.

Butler's stadium seats less than the 4,000 minimum required by the N.C. High School Athletic Association to host playoff games. Boone said he got special permission from the NCHSAA to play the game on campus.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.

Greensboro Page rolls to 4A soccer title

CARY -- Senior forward Rob Lovejoy scored a hat trick as he led Greensboro Page to a convincing 4-0 victory over Cary Green Hope in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men's soccer
championship on Friday night at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Lovejoy earned Most Valuable Player honors as Page won its fifth NCHSAA state championship in men's soccer but its first since 1983. The Pirates were playing in their eighth state final but this was Page's
first berth in the championship in 15 years.

Page dominated play early and led 2-0 at the half on a pair of Lovejoy goals. In the 12th minute, he headed a ball down, controlled it and then shot and scored, and five minutes later tallied again to make it 2-0.

A penalty kick by Glen Long six minutes into the second half put the Pirates up 3-0, and then Lovejoy closed out the scoring in the 60th minute, scoring off an assist from sophomore midfielder Hassen Kouyateh.

The Pirates finished 22-0-2 and won their last 10 matches in a row, including outscoring its opponents 20-1 in the state playoffs. Green Hope, in the finals for the first time since 2001, ended the season 19-5-2
and suffered its first loss in 19 games.

Woolbright resigns as Ardrey Kell football coach

Ardrey Kell football coach Marty Woolbright, 58, has resigned as the school’s football coach.

He said he told Knights principal Harrison Peters about his decision in August, before the season started. Peters was out of the office and unavailable Friday.

Woolbright said he was wanting to free time to pursue his hobbies and spend time with his family. He has seven grandchildren.

“I’ve been a head coach for a long time and when I came here I was hoping to do it for five years and make sure I got this first ninth grade class through,” he said. “They’ve had the same coach for four years now and it’s been a lot of hard work and responsibility. I just want to step back now and be an assistant for a few more years and then fully retire.”

Woolbright has taught for 35 years and coached for 30. He’s coached at six schools and was head coach at five, including Clover (S.C.) High, where he was coaching prior to coming to Ardrey Kell. Woolbright still lives in Clover.

His first Ardrey Kell team, in 2006, finished 1-9. The 2007 team won its first four games, reached the second round of the playoffs and finished 8-5.

In 2008, the Knights were 5-6. They were 3-7 this season.

Woolbright said his successor will have a good nucleus of players. The team’s junior varsity was 6-4, its first winning record, and the varsity returns four starters on offense, including tailback Justus Pickett, who has offers from Stanford and Vanderbilt, and tight end Drew Owens, who has 10 Division I offers. The Knights return five starters on defense.

Woolbright said only five of the school’s seven coaches work on campus, which can create increased workloads at times, especially in the offseason. That extra work, he said, was starting to wear on him.

“Ardrey Kell has great kids,” Woolbright said. “I think they need somebody young with a lot of energy. The program is solid. I’ve just been doing this a long time. And for us, with our staffing situation, it gets to be a year-round process. We’ve got to do all the little things to try to be competitive. It’s a lot of work and responsibility and I want to free (myself up) from some of that.”

Woolbright is the second area coach to step down this week.

First-year Mooresville coach Steve McCurry resigned Thursday after his team finished 0-11. Mooresville principal Todd Wirt said, in a press release, that McCury's resignation was for personal reasons.

Concord 1st Assembly goes for state title Saturday

Saturday at Charlotte Christian, yhe Concord First Assembly Eagles will play in the NCISAA Division II football State Championship game. The Eagles will host the Harrells Christian Academy Crusaders (Harrells, NC) who are the defending state champions. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

The Eagles won the Piedmont Conference this season and finished their schedule undefeated (10-0). They defeated the Ashville Blues (55-13) in the first round of play-offs and last week, the Eagles defeated the Forsyth Country Day Furies (20-19) to advance the title game.

The Crusaders are the 2008 defending State Champions and finished their season (10-2). They defeated Northside Christian Academy (48-8) in the first round of play-offs and last week, the Crusaders defeated Westminster Catawba Christian (14-0) to advance to the title game.

The past two years, the FACS-Eagles and the Harrells-Crusaders have met in the State Championship game with one win each. In 2007, the Eagles beat the Crusaders 34-33 in the closing seconds of the game to win their first state title. Last year (2008), the Crusaders came from behind late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Eagles 38-35 in the closing seconds of the game.

Head Coach, Mike Minter, a former Carolina Panther, is currently in his second season at First Assembly. His team has averaged more than 300 yards rushing and more than 100 yards passing per game this season.

The offense is led by: Senior, Running-Back Tony Moore who has more than 1900 yards and 22 TD’s on the season. Senior, QB-David Larson has over 900 yards and 11 TD’s passing. Seniors, Kyle Grisby has over 500 yards and 9-TD’s. Senior, Brandon Stegall has more than 300 yards and 4-TD’s.

The Eagle defense is led by: Senior, Matt Wallace with 8.3 tackles per game, 5 sacks and 1 interception. Senior, Kyle McKinley with 8 tackles per game, 4 sacks and 1 blocked punt. Junior, Easton Sprabary with 8 tackles per game and 3 sacks. Senior, Ansley Miller with 7.9 tackles per game, and 9 sacks. The Eagles defense has also averaged six sacks per game, led by Jon Wilson (11 sacks), Ansley Miller (9 sacks) and Matt Wallace (5 sacks), and Kyle McKinley (4 sacks). Plus, Junior, Tyler Rhyne leads the conference with 6 interceptions for more than 225 yards.

First Assembly is 22-2 over the last two seasons and they have not lost a game on their home (Webb) field since October 12, 2007. As a result, this State Championship game looks to be the biggest games of the season (maybe the biggest game in the past three seasons) and an incredible rematch between these two great teams. Harrells (10-2) and defending State Champion would like to be the spoiler for a perfect (12-0) FACS season. It will be an exciting game with a lot of history between these two teams.

Hopewell's Brooks signs basketball scholarship

Hopewell senior De'Mon Brooks, a 6-7, 228-pound forward, signe with Howard Sunday at the New Birth-Charlotte Family Life Center.

Brooks averaged 13.5 points and 10.2 rebounds last season for the Titans, who are 2-0 in the 2009-10 season and ranked No. 1 in the Observer's Sweet 16 poll.

Brooks got 32 scholarship offers and plans to take his 4.2 GPA to Howard to pursue an Architectural Engineering degree.

Metrolina Christian's Hallice signs with Gardner-Webb

Metrolina Christian Academy Senior, T.J. Hallice has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC.

In 2009, Hallice averaged 18.5 points per game combined with 9.5 rebounds per game and was named to the Metrolina Athletic Conference All-Conference team. Prior to moving to North Carolina, Hallice played at Tabernacle Christian in Gardendale, Alabama where as a sophomore he earned All-Conference honors and his team won the ACEA State Championship. Hallice will be the first basketball player in the history of Metrolina Christian Academy to play NCAA Division I basketball. T.J. is the son of Tim and Robin Hallice of Waxhaw, NC.

St. Stephens softball star Jones signs with NC A&T

Hickory St. Stephens softball star Tranea Jones signed with N.C. A&T last week.

Jones carries a 3.1 GPA is is active in Theatre Arts, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and her local church youth group. During her three years at St. Stephens, she's got a career batting average of .306, with 43 RBIs, has a .487 sluggng percentage and has 98 total bases. Defensively, Jones has totaled 118 put outs playing second base and short stop in her career.

"She's our team's enery, which she constantly uses to push her teammates," St. Stephens coach Jan Davis said.

Butler's Smith signs with Wofford

Butler High basketball player Aerris Smith, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound senior, signed with Wofford this week.

Smith studies honors physics at Butler and carries a 3.6 GPA taking advanced classes. He's the fourth player in three years from his school to sign a Division I basketball scholarship, following Demontez Stitt (Clemson), Jordan Springer (West Point) and Khalif Guiden (The Citadel, now at Queens).

Marvin Ridge reaches state soccer finals

Four championships will be up for grabs this weekend in the annual
North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state men’s soccer
championships, but the matchups are not yet finalized.

The championship games will be played at the WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday
and Saturday, but only the 4-A championship on Friday night and the 1-A
final at three o'clock Saturday afternoon are set. Rain and storms kept some
regional finals from being played or, in the case of Jacksonville and Chapel
Hill, from being completed.

The 4-A championship Friday night will send the Falcons of Cary Green Hope
(19-4-2) against unbeaten Greensboro Page (21-0-2). Green Hope is in the
soccer finals for the second time in school history, with a runner-up finish
to Durham Jordan in its only other appearance in 2001, while Page has a 4-3
record in seven previous trips to the championship.

Rob Lovejoy and Glen Long lead Page, which has only ties with Northwest
Guilford and Greensboro Day as the blemishes on an otherwise perfect record.
Nader Jaibat and Jared Girard scored goals for Green Hope in its 2-1 win
over Southern Pines Pinecrest on Wednesday night for the Eastern Regional
crown.

The 1-A championship will send Dixon (19-5-1) against Hendersonville
(19-4-1). Hendersonville makes its first trip to an NCHSAA men's soccer
final, led by Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year Brayan
(correct spelling) Aguirre and the league's Goalkeeper of the Year Will
Patrick.

Dixon, in the championship for the third time in the last seven years, has
outscored the opposition 22-1 in the playoffs and is paced by senior Colby
Geohagan, who has recorded 35 assists on the year.

The first game on Saturday is for the 3-A championship, sending the winner
of the Jacksonville-Chapel Hill game against the survivor of the Waxhaw
Marvin Ridge-Asheville contest. Jacksonville and Chapel Hill battled to a
1-1 draw after regulation time but the officials ruled the field unplayable
due to the rain so the two will resume the contest in overtime on Friday.

Saturday's final game has last year's 2-A runner-up, Shelby (22-3-1)
awaiting the winner of the Friday night game between Pittsboro Northwood and
perennial power Swansboro. Shelby is led offensively by junior Ben Cheaney
but nine different Golden Lions have scored playoff goals.

Tickets will be eight dollars at the gate. Wendy’s is the
presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program. The Raleigh Sports
Consortium serves as a host city sponsor for these championships, along with
the city of Raleigh and the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors’ Bureau.

Prep hoops: No. 4 Lake Norman stops No. 3 Forestview

High school basketball season opened this week and one of the best games was Lake Norman's boys, ranked No. 4 in the Sweet 16, at No. 3 Gastonia Forestview.

Forestview reached the N.C. 3A championship last season. Lake Norman moved up to 4A from 3A this season.

Lake Norman jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead and won 69-53 at Forestview Thursday. Former Garinger star Reggie Price had 20 points and five rebounds. Matt Eller (14 points) and Brian Whalen (11) were in double figures.

Forestview got 13 from Chris Johnson and Dejuan Means.
