My father and I received our legend car last weekend and we are very excited for the experience and the new people we will meet along the way. For me personally I'm excited and can't wait to strap into the 125 + horse power beast and take it around the track. I think legend racing is going to be a great step up from karts and I'll probably learn a lot. And as far as my car goes you are not going to lose this car on the race track its going to have a sweet paint job all thanks to my father Don Johnson. Cody First Time in a Race car.

Earlier this month Cody went to Orlando Speed World to climb into a race car for the first time on a circle track. It was also his first time driving anything that required him to shift which he picked up on very quickly.

Thanks to Ross at 600 Racing for providing the Legends car Cody tested and for providing Cody with expert instruction to get him started. Cody adopted very quickly to both the Legends car and being on a circle track for his first time turning a very respectful 17.77 lap time.

We’ll see what 2009 holds but hopefully we can get Cody in a Legends car in some races the early part of 2009.

Cody picked up his WKA state championship trophy at the FKCS banquet and realized one of his goals for 2008, getting that big eagle. Thanks goes out to all the FKSC board members for their hard work this past season and for putting on a great end of the season banquet. Cody won three out of five races this past season to take the championship.

CIRCLE TRACK RACING

Saturday Night we went to Orlando Speed World to watch Taylor race his Legends car and we are happy to report he won. Was a great race and our first exposure to the Legends cars which where fairly impressive.
Cody will be getting in a race car for the first time later this month and take some lessons and hopefully get about 50 laps on the track. We are very excited about t his first test in a race car and will report back with pictures and a full report.

Congrats to AJ for winning the Mini Max National championship. Nice to see the small honest guy win for once and not the deep pocket, cheating bunch that race in the Rotax program.

PACKED AND READY TO GO

Cody is all packed and ready for the trip to the WKA Nationals at New Castle, In. this coming weekend.

This will be our first big out of state kart race and the WKA Zoom Zoom Nationals this coming weekend should be a lot of fun. After the 14 hour drive that is, the GPS is all set and we’re on our way.

Please keep your fingers crossed Cody does well; we’d love to show them Florida WKA kids can race with the best in the county and do well. Full report next weekend when we get back.

FKCS Race 5

Cody gets a win in race #5 FKCS in what everyone said was the best race of the weekend. Jacob Duval is a class act he and Cody had a great race. Thank you Jacob for racing Cody clean, its great Cody gets a chance to race kids as good as Jacob as it makes Cody a better racer. (and you to John G) Thank you Dave from TS racing for helping Cody, Corey Reeves for the awesome can motor.

One more race in supercan than watch out Austin both Cody and Jacob will be moving up to pipe, that will make for some great races.

Homestead this coming weekend to race the best Rotax series in Florida, the south series run by Tony. Hope to see a lot of you there. Hopefully the rain will stay away for the weekend.

I hope Mr Wright is healing up after his tumble.

I'm sorry to hear Rudy resigned from FKCS. The politics’ in karting do nothing but to hinder its growth. Thank you Rudy for trying to make FKCS a better series.

Cody won Sat. and I believe is now back in the points lead in Jr supercan. You can read his race report on his web site. Two WKA national races in Florida next year Daytona and Jacksonville 103rd street should be alot of fun. Stars of Karting will return to Florida again next year racing at Jacksonville 103rd Street from what is being spread around.

FKCS Monticello

Thanks to everyone at Monticello the site of race three in the Florida Karting Championship series. We where only there sat. but I heard the racing was great on Sunday also. Thanks to Rudy and all the FKCS board members for all their hard work putting the series together this year. Results and pictures are posted on the FKCS web site http://www.flwkasprintseries.com/

I heard rumor that FKCS race four has been canceled at Moroso and moved to Ocala. Better keep checking the FKCS web site for updates. I hope it's not true Moroso is a great kart track and we where looking forward to going there.

With the cost of gas here now near $3.85 a gallon will we soon see KARTPOOLING start to take place more often among FKCS members. Kartpooling would be a great way for FKCS members who live close to each other to share the travel expenses by hauling all their karts in one trailer. Will kartpooling catch on here in Florida we’ll have to see.

The South Rotax series holds races two and three this coming weekend you can expect to see a great turn out at Homestead for this weekend. Unforunately I can't get out of work so we'll miss it but hope everyone has fun and a safe race. http://www.homesteadkarting.net/

My trips to TS racing for parts, ect. where always highlighted by picking up a copy of the best karting racing magazine published, Kart Sport Magazine. Seems there are a lot of changes a foot at Kart Sport Magazine that should help make the publication even better down the road.

As a magazine publisher myself I can certainly understand what Kart Sport was going thru publishing a printed format magazine. With printing costs, mailing costs greatly increasing over the past year many magazines are finding it very tough to stay in business these days.

With the Internet growing as a preferred form of media that folks get their news and entertainment from the days of the printed publication being king is quickly coming to an end.

Kart Sports Magazines decision to go digital is a risky but necessary move on their part.
I hope you’ll give Kart Sport Magazine your full support as it is the best kart racing magazine published that covers karting in North America.

WHEN DRIVERS RUN OUT OF TALENT

Anyone who saw the NASCAR race Saturday night saw Kyle Bush run out of talent and take Dale Jr out of the lead. Or Lewis Hamilton last year during a F1 race run out of talent coming down pit row and going off course costing him a shot at the F1 Championship most likely.

In Kyle Bush’s case it affected another racer in Lewis Hamilton’s it didn’t but both at that time and place just flat ran out of talent. In the situation with Kyle Bush it goes beyond running out of talent as 1000’s of young racers where watching that race many of whom now might well believe it’s acceptable behavior on the race track.

What is this teaching all these young racers? Weather Kyle Bush likes it or not he is a role model to a lot of young racers out here and the example’s he set both Friday night during the Nationwide race and Saturday night during the NASCAR race was pretty poor.

Is respecting other racers on the track becoming a lost part of racing, is doing whatever it takes to win on the track following corporate America’s examples with ENRON and the mortgage mess we are now facing. Win at any cost, become successful at any cost.

As a parent what do you tell your young racer about racing their competitors clean?

With Cody I can’t tell him how to race out there I can however make it very clear that respect is given to drivers like Cory Reeves, Jacob Duval who race their competitors clean and still win time after time. It takes very little driving talent to boot a competitor in a corner, to drive over them rather making a clean pass on them.

I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum on this over the last three years Cody has been racing. More times than not it was Cody who was on the receiving end of a less talented drivers practices. On one occasion Cody forgot he is a talented kid and pulled a less than Cody like move on Nick Neri I was in total shock when I witnessed it. After the race I didn’t have to say anything Cody told me without my prompting he regretted doing it and being a less than talented driver was not the way he wanted to be known.

In the past two races Cody had to deal with two separate kids whose talent, driving skills where so lacking they took him out of both races or moved him back several positions. All you can tell a young driver when this happens is to keep their chin up, to race against even those who have thru a lack of their own talent; driving skills have taken him out in past races too race them clean in future races.

It’s very hard as a parent to deal with this because deep down you’d like to tell him to go out and boot the kids but that proves nothing. Going out racing them clean and beating them proves everything if you are a talented driver and thats what you have to impresson on your young driver. I would be more proud of Cody for finishing second than winning by showing he is less than a talented driver.

Stars of Karting Western Division Race

Miller Motorsposts park in Utah was the site for the first Stars of Karting Western Division race this year. A total of five drivers from Florida took part in the opening race of the western division. Great job by all five was turned in all weekend; they represented Florida kart racing very well in Utah.

Isn’t it great we live here in Florida and can race year round, well May 2008 is shaping up to provide you with a lot of track time. I’ve done the best I can to round up all the kart race locations and dates for tracks here in Florida in the month of May. I'm still working on this list as I find time to do so, if I’ve over looked any kart races please contact me and I’ll add it to this list ASP.

I believe there is now a kart series being held at Sebring, soon as I get that info I’ll update this.

Suspect Released

After hours of integration as to weather he was the racer who pulled tape off his radiator during a Rotax race the suspect one John Gula was released to race another day. At the writing of this article the real perpetrator of the horrible track defiling crime still had not been apprehended. As for young Mr Gula the hours of intense interrogation by track officials did not seem to dampen his sprites any. Having proven his innocents Mr Gula was back on track for the next race.

April 2008 BILL WRIGHT WINS MASTERS RACE

April 2008 Bill Wright the god father of kart racing here in Florida showed he is not only the best kart racing promoter in the country but his driving skills are equally as great.

After being out of the seat for several years Bill got behind the wheel again for a Rotax R Max Challenge race here in Florida and walked away winning the masters class. I was not able to watch the Masters race but by all accounts Bill had it handled pretty well, his lack of seat time over the last few years seemed to have no affect as he picked up right where he left off when he was racing full time, winning.

Congrats to Bill for his win we all look forward to the 2009 Winter Tour.

WKA Florida State Championship Kart Race Homestead April 2008

The second race in the Florida Karting Championship series took place at Homestead Kartings track April 11-12-13, 2008. Tony and his crew provided us with a great track for this race and our thanks go out to him for all his hard work.

The weather Saturday looked to be a bit in question but it turned out to be a great day after a short rain shower. As with race #1 in the Florida Karting Championship Series this race was a well organized event and everyone seemed to really enjoy them selves. This series is one of the most fun, relaxed kart racing series Cody and I take part in and I encourage everyone to come out and race in this series.

I do not get to watch many of the races with Cody racing Supercan Jr but that race was a great race with Cody and John Gula battling for the lead right up until the last lap. I'm sure the other races where just as exciting.

STARS OF KARTING IN FLORIDA

April 4-6, 2008 saw Stars of Karting come to Florida for the East Division Events 1 + 2 races.

As seems to hold true for the first Stars of Karting race every year it rained at this event also. Not only did it rain but Sunday it flat out poured down most of the day. Any other race in Florida would have been canceled but Stars of Karting stuck to their schedule and raced even though conditions where horrible.

The event was well organized with 31 JICA’s and 24 Cadets taking the track for two days of racing. The race format was a bit different with qualifying determining your grid position for the three heat races. If you had a bad qualifying effort this format really works against you but it sure made it interesting. Rather than have one final on Saturday and one on Sunday Stars had two finals on Sunday.

Florida racers had a good showing with Jarvis Gerinari driving skills in the rain really shined. Danny Formal had the best finish of all the Florida racers with a win in one of the finals on Sunday.

The point standing for Stars of Karting Florida races are as follows in JICA: 2 Jarvis Gerinari, 3 Danny Formal, 10 Phil Delao, 14 Nick Neri, 23 John Gula, Cody Johnson and Jesus Rios raced as temp members and received no points although both put in great efforts all weekend. For the Cadet class Florida racers also had a good showing with Stars of Karting point standing being 14 Derek Sobel, 16 Ian Tilbor with Dominic Tesorro racing as a Stars temp member with no points awarded.

Will Stars of Karting come back to Florida next year, we’ll have to wait and see. It was great event that had the weather been better I'm sure would have done a great job promoting karting here in Florida.
