It is easy to forget their needs as time goes on but there is so much long term assistance that is needed for the families of our community in order for them to move forward. It has been extremely heart warming to experience the out pour of donations from our community as well as their eagerness to help. This is why VC is a great community and a place I have called home for 30 years.

HELP FOR LA JOLLA TRIBE

During the fires last month 94% of the La Jolla Indian Reservation burned and 54 homes were lost. Over the weekend that number rose by one more house that was lost to flooding caused by the fires. There is no casino on the reservation to provide ready funds to the tribe.

A La Jolla Band of Indians Fire Relief Fund has been established at the Bank of America. You can donate to the fund at any Bank of American branch.

If you want to send the money directly to the tribe, mail it to 2200 Highway 76, Pauma Valley 92061.

TOYS FOR TOTS IN VALLEY CENTER

The Valley Center Coldwell Banker is your collection point for the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots drive. The Marines request that all toys be new and unwrapped. Coldwell Banker Real Estate office is located at 27301 Valley Center Rd. There is an even more than usual need for toys due to the devastation of the wildfires.

FIRE RELIEF CONCERT

The VC-P school district will be reviving its “Teachers and Friends” Concert, which was originally used to raise money for the Maxine Theater. This time it will be used to bring the community together and support the families of VCPUSD students and employees who lost their homes in the fires. The concert will be Dec. 15, 2 p.m. in the Maxine. Production costs are being underwritten by donations so all proceeds will go directly to support our the stricken families. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students/children 18 and under.

FREE LEGAL ADVICE FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY FIRES

Free legal advice and referrals are available for anyone affected by the recent California wildfires.

The American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division (YLD) in conjunction with the State Bar of California, which is made up of attorneys who volunteer their time and knowledge, can offer basic disaster-related legal services such as advice on:

Landlord-tenant problems;
Disaster-related contract or insurance matters;
Replacement of legal documents;
Counseling on mortgage foreclosures; and
Assistance with consumer-protection matters.

The group's toll-free telephone number is 1-866-636-9041. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A caller's specific complaint, or need, will be forwarded to an attorney who is an expert in that branch of the law. If researching a legal problem is necessary, the YLD expert will find an answer and get back to the caller.

No member of the volunteer attorney group will accept fee-generating cases. Their services are authorized only to assist in resolving disaster-related issues.

"The Bell Farms Red Cross came by the St. Vincent de Paul Pantry this morning requesting laundry services. Please go by and ask for Chris or Maryleese(?) or just go by and let them know you are there to help. I believe you would pick up the clothes for a family or two, bring them home, wash them, and return them to the family at the Red Cross Shelter."

the dollar tree has really good supplies of utensils, brooms, dishes and such. Every store I shop at for the families I always as the manager for a discount and have been blessed with much kindness- never hurts to ask

I have on family that we are just about done outfitting but she still needs 4 dinning room chairs.

AID NEEDED FOR INJURED DOG

We were evacuated for a week. During the evacuation my dog broke or dislocated its back right foot. We can not afford to take our dog to the vet since my husband was out a full week of work. The house he was working on was evacuated. My dog's foot sure does hurt but we can not afford to have it looked at.

FOOD FOR FIRE SURVIVORS

The Fallbrook Church of Christ has food boxes that are designed to feed 4 people for up to 6 days. They also have blankets and tools such as rakes, shovels, wheel barrels. We have been working with North County CERT, Rainbow Volunteer Fire Station, and the Red Cross throughout Rainbow and East Fallbrook. They still have several food boxes available. If anyone knows of people who need food or supplies, call 760-728-3900. They will get the boxes to the right folks.

FREE MOVIE TICKETS!

There are still FREE tickets to see the movie Bella at the Regal Theater in Escondido for 3:15 TODAY (Saturday).
If you know anyone who would like to go...evacuees, church members, youth groups, friends, family...I will be picking up 115 tickets at 2:30 today and you can tell people to find me for their free tickets in front of the theater. I will give them out first come first serve. If we run out, there will be other showings you can purchase tickets for. Please forward this...I would like to see these tickets used! For those who do not know me personally, I will be wearing a blue sweatshirt that says "Chisholm" across the front :-) If you can't find me - call my cell phone at 760-822-4115 (but I can't hold tickets for anyone because that will get too confusing)

Toy Drive to Benefit Children of the Fires

Sponsored by the California Center for the Arts, Escondido

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2007) - Due to the devastating fires, children from needy families whose parents might be unable to buy them even a single toy for the holidays will suffer twice. Adding to the loss of their homes and belongings there may also be no special joy for them this holiday season.

To help bring happiness to these boys and girls, the California Center for the Arts, Escondido has initiated a toy drive which will start on Sunday, November 11 with the performance of bluegrass band, Cherryholmes and end on Sunday December 16 with the performance of Handel's Messiah.

Vicky Basehore, president of the Center said about the toy drive, "Seeing the sad, confused and frightened faces of these youngsters on TV, and knowing what they suffered, inspired us to do something to help them. The proximity of the holiday season to the fires made a toy drive a natural way to try and bring some joy to their lives. And, to be sure that children truly in need receive the toys, the Salvation Army, whose mission is to help families in need, will distribute the toys."

For those wishing to donate, toys can be delivered Tuesday though Friday to the Center's Administration building. On performance days or nights, toys can be brought to the Center Theater or Concert Hall. For events in the Conference Center, toys can be left in that facility's lobby.

CASEY R.I.P.

Casey, the dalmation of Fireman Mike O'Connor, who many people were hoping would survive his car accident, died yesterday from a blood clot. Mike told us that Casey was up and walking around and seemed to be recovering from the surgery, but then keeled over. We're very sorry to hear that about a guy who does so much for the community and who really loved his pooch.

SCHOOL FUNNELS DONATIONS FOR SURVIVORS

The Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District has numerous avenues where interested people can funnel donations. Please note that the Valley Center- Pauma Unified School District cannot accept any items such as food, clothing etc. It does not have the capability to store, sort, launder and distribute items, however, monetary donations and gift cards are a better way to give to the fire victims.

If you would like to directly provide aid to the fire victims for food, clothing, etc., you can provide gift cards from local store outlets or you can provide donations to the following agencies and church groups listed below and on our website that are within our community. They can be contacted through their web sites or feel free to call them.

Several community members have inquired about giving back to the school district because of the significant role that the high school played during the fire as an evacuation site. Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District is accepting donations for the school district for any school related activities or any additional transportation cost to pick up students who have been displaced and are located outside of our district. If you would like to donate to the school district for transportation or other school related activities you can make out a check to VCPUSD.

Saint Francis Episcopal Church is collecting money for a fire fund. 100% of the proceeds of the fund will be used for fire relief aid for people in the local area.
