SliTaz 1.0, The Smallest Desktop Distro On Earth

SliTaz GNU/Linux is a free operating system working completely in memory from removeable media such as a cdrom or USB key. It is light, speedy and fully installable on a hard drive.

SliTaz GNU/Linux is a mini distribution and live CD designed to run speedily on hardware with 128 MB of RAM. SliTaz uses BusyBox, a recent Linux kernel and GNU software. It boots with Syslinux and provides more than 200 Linux commands, the lighttpd web server, SQLite database, rescue tools, IRC client, SSH client and server powered by Dropbear, X window system, JWM (Joe's Window Manager), gFTP, Geany IDE, Mozilla Firefox, AlsaPlayer, GParted, a sound file editor and more. The SliTaz ISO image fits on a less than 30 MB media and takes just 80 MB of hard disk space.

SliTaz is distributed in the form of a LiveCD that you can easily burn to a cdrom and boot from. When the system is running you can eject the LiveCD and use your CD drive for other tasks.

The Live system provides a fully-featured, working graphical distro and lets you keep your data and personal settings on persistent media. The system can be extended with the Tazpkg package manager and security updates are provided for the cooking and stable versions.

MilaX, the OpenSolaris Live CD

MilaX is a small-size live-CD distribution which runs completely off a CD or a USB storage device. It is based on OpenSolaris Nevada and includes its basic features. It originally started as an experiment to see how much OpenSolaris software could fit on a mini-CD, but it eventually became a full-fledged OpenSolaris distribution.

It is also possible to use MilaX as a rescue CD. It can be installed on storage media with a small capacity, including bootable business cards, USB flash drives, memory cards, and Zip drives. By the way, MilaX is free to use, modify and distribute.

The current version of Milax requires at least 256MB RAM and a Pentium or Celeron to boot into a IceWM desktop. 128MB RAM is sufficient for booting into Command-Line mode.

Urban Terror: Free Linux Multiplayer FPS Game

Urban Terror is a free multiplayer first person shooter (FPS). Urban Terror uses the free, stand-alone, ioquake3 engine modified, which doesn't require Quake III Arena, in addition to being an add-on to id Software's Quake III Arena.

Urban Terror is focused on blending realism with the fast-paced action of shooters such as Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament. The realism in the mod is introduced through a number of changes.

The weapons available are real-life, have recoil, are less accurate when fired while moving, and require reloading after a magazine has been expended. The number of weapons and other gear that can be carried is limited.

Damage is also realistic, based on dividing the player target into discrete areas. In addition to the damage system, wounds require bandaging, and wounds sustained in the legs or feet slow the player down considerably until they are bandaged. A stamina system is also present, and is depleted by activities such as sprinting or jumping; crouching down allows the stamina bar to recover faster.

Depending on the map being played, external environments are more realistic too and can include weather effects such as rain or snow.

Urban Terror 4.1 can run on Quake 3 Arena or on the free ioUrbanTerror. The .zip and the .exe installer have exactly the same files in them and both include ioUrbanTerror, so you only need to get 1 installer. There's only FULL packages, no upgrades. Ultimate Edition 1.8 is built based off Ubuntu Hardy Heron, unlike previous builds which were created by a tool called reconstructor the development team built this one by hand. it is by far their best work. Elyssa (Linux Mint 5) RC2 has been Released

This is the second release candidate for Linux Mint 5, codename Elyssa, based on Daryna and compatible with Ubuntu Hardy and its repositories.

Puppy Linux 4.00 Has Been Released

The development team of Puppy Linux has announced availability of new release of Puppy Linux, a major updated of the minimalist desktop distribution. Its the 4.00 version.

For who don't know, Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full featured. Puppy boots into a 64MB ram disk, and that's it, the whole caboodle runs in RAM.

Unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, Puppy in its entirety loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multi session formatted CD-R/DVD-R to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all!

Now, this Puppy has all drivers built-in for scanning, digital camera, printing (Gutenprint), audio recording/editing/conversion, making it a complete multimedia environment ...yet is only 87.1 MB!!! Of course this is in addition to being a complete office environment, in addition to having a huge collection of useful utilities, in addition to anything else you can think of...

Alternative 4.00 live-CD with 2.6.25 kernel
The 'standard' build of Puppy 4.00 is file puppy-4.00-k2.6.21.7-seamonkey.iso, which is 87.1MB, compare that with Puppy 3.01 'standard' (with much less functionality) which is 98.6MB!

The team have also built puppy-4.00-k2.6.25-seamonkey.iso, using the latest Linux kernel. This may not be quite as mature for wireless network connectivity though. Choose this one if you want support for a dual-core CPU (but the 'standard' build with mono-core 2.6.21.7 kernel works on dual-core systems). Also, strangely enough, we have more success booting older PCs with the 2.6.23 and later kernels, so try this one if Puppy fails to boot.

The 2.6.25 kernel is configured with the unified /dev/sd* and /dev/sr* drive naming, which may cause some difficulty if you need to configure GRUB.

Slackware 12.1 Has Been Released

A new stable Slackware has been released. Its Slackware version 12.1, a must-have upgrade for any Slackware user. This first Slackware edition of the year combines Slackware's legendary simplicity (and close tracking of original sources), stability, and security with some of the latest advances in Linux technology. Expect no less than the best Slackware yet.

Among the many program updates and distribution enhancements, you'll find two of the most advanced desktop environments available today: Xfce 4.4.2, a fast and lightweight but visually appealing and easy to use desktop environment, and KDE 3.5.9, the latest version of the award-winning K Desktop Environment. The Slackware development team have added to Slackware support for HAL (the Hardware Abstraction Layer) which allows the system administrator to add users to the cdrom and plugdev groups. features such as journaling filesystems, SCSI and ATA RAID volume support, SATA support, Software RAID, LVM (the Logical Volume Manager, and encrypted filesystems. Kernel support for X DRI (the Direct Rendering Interface) brings high-speed hardware accelerated 3D graphics to Linux. It have switched from the older one-piece X11 Window System to the newest modular X11 from X.Org, which should be simpler to maintain and will likely speed up development of new features for X (such as translucent windows and a few other things that are on the horizon).

New Release of OpenBSD 4.3

The development team of OpenBSD have released OpenBSD 4.3. This is the 23nd release on CD-ROM (and 24rd via FTP). It remain proud of OpenBSD's record of more than ten years with only two remote holes in the default install.

For who don't know, the OpenBSD project produces a FREE, multi-platform 4.4 BSD-based UNIX-like operating system. Its efforts emphasize portability, standardization, correctness, proactive security and integrated cryptography. OpenBSD supports binary emulation of most programs from SVR4 (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, BSD/OS, SunOS and HP-UX.

Kiwi Linux 8.04 Has Been Released

Kiwi 8.04 is a 386 Desktop CD derivative based on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. As you know, Kiwi Linux is a modified Ubuntu live CD for the i386 architecture. It includes Romanian and Hungarian localisations, multimedia codecs, encrypted DVD support, Flash and Java plugins for Firefox, PPPoE GUI for accessing local Internet services (Clicknet and RDS) and write support for NTFS partitions.

This new release installs packages necessary for playing restricted audio, video and Flash formats by default and supports the Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem.

The list of available languages is English, French, German, Hungarian and Romanian. The default package selection is altered somewhat to be more familiar to Windows users: Thunderbird is the default mail client and Audacious the music player.

Other additions to the CD are Compiz extra settings GUI, unrar and mstt corefonts, and a graphical tool for restoring GRUB boot menus lost after installing other Operating Systems (OS).
The Medibuntu repositories are enabled by default to allow installing w32codecs, Skype and Google Earth among others.

CDLinux 0.6.1 Stable Release Is Available

The stable release of CDLinux 0.6.1 is out now. CDlinux is a compact Linux mini distribution. It ships with an up-to-date version of the Linux kernel, X.Org, Xfce window manager, and many popular applications. It has good internationalization and locale support and is highly user-configurable.

This release has a minor bug fix and some major feature enhancement. It ships with linux-2.6.24.5, xorg-7.3, xfce-4.4.2, firefox-2.0.0.14, pidgin-2.4.1, xine-1.1.12, and many other up-to-date popular applications. And all these are packed in a 57M ISO file.

Canonical has announced that Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop and Server Editions are now available! Its integrate the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

“Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is a very significant release as it will take Ubuntu squarely into the business environment," said Jane Silber, COO of Canonical Ltd. "Our business and home users have told us that they want a longer support cycle to make Ubuntu a better deployment option. The release of SymphonyOne 2008.1, an Ubuntu-based distribution with Mezzo, an alternative desktop environment, is available now. Symphony OS is a distribution of GNU/Linux based on the Debian GNU/Linux and KNOPPIX operating systems. Symphony will do things a bit differently than other Linux operating systems; making it easier to use and more intuitive than most existing distributions.

SymphonyOne is an almost 100% rewrite of all the Mezzo desktop code taking advantage of more features of fvwm to provide a smaller footprint and more stable environment. Based on Ubuntu 7.10, SymphonyOne provides a complete desktop environment and full Ubuntu compatibility on systems with as little as a 200mhz processor. When launched, the web app is run in it’s own window seperately from firefox.
With the changes in the Mezzo desktop we have thrown away our old desklet system which was never really adopted by developers and have moved to adesklets in this release.

Sidux 2008-01 has been Released

The Sidux's development team has announced the release of Sidux 2008-01, a desktop distribution based on Debian. Sidux 2008-01 is shipping in roughly 435 MB KDE-lite flavours for AMD64 and i386 (i686) and a combined i386+amd64 release with 1,470 MB KDE for KDE-full.

Sidux is a full featured Debian sid based live CD with a special focus on hard disk installations, a clean upgrade path within sid and additional hard- and software support. The ISO is completely based on Debian sid, enriched and stabilized with sidux' own packages and scripts.

As development team said, Sidux 2008-01 concentrates on KDE 3.5.9, the large changes implied by Kernel 2.6.24.4, the newly added "resolvconf" facilities to deal with DNS settings in combination with "Ceni" and our new build system for sidux. Furthermore a large number of individual functionality enhancements and bugfixes have been applied to the full package line up.

Talking about upstream development, kernel 2.6.24 has merged "i386" and "x86_64" as sub-architectures for the new generic "x86" architecture and offers support for further wireless lan devices like RealTek RTL8180L/ RTL8185, UVC video support for Logitech webcams, high resolution timers and dynamic ticks for amd64 systems. Especially these kernel related changes have imposed a number adaptions on sidux' kernel release process, which is now provided by packages closely following Debian's lead and are finally, accompanied by a number of GPL2 compatible external module packages, available through plain apt-get.

Another major topic has been the dissolution of the former "sidux" menu into the XDG compliant menu categories, which — in combination with the new SVG based artwork — allow for better compatibility with alternative window managers and desktop environments and have been a precondition for future KDE4 or potential GNOME or XFCE support. Likewise a number of packages have undergone major changes or been replaced by new approaches (like Ceni replacing netcardconfig) all together.

TuxGuitar, a GuitarPro Alternative for Linux

GuitarPro, known as a Windows application, which is used to create music for guitar. Yes, I knew, but I never used it, as it is for Windows and not free software, and I didn't run Windows anymore since few months ago. So I try to search on web, and found TuxGuitar, the freeware alternative of GuitarPro for Linux. And again, this software is available for Windows, Macintosh too.

It is a wonderful and fun application programmed in Java to create, edit and play scores, like GuitarPro in Windows. TuxGuitar's features include the publisher of scores, the use of multitrack, autoscroll while playing, apply various effects (curve, slide, vibrations), manager of times, import and export of files gp3, gp4 and gp5, etc..

To install TuxGuitar, in its latest version, 1.0, we need some units, are these:

As I said before, TuxGuitar is programmed in Java, so we have to install java library:

$ sudo aptitude install sun-java5-jre libswt3.2-gtk-jni libswt3.2-gtk-java $ Sudo aptitude install sun-java5-jre libswt3.2-gtk-jni libswt3.2-gtk-java

It takes a minute, once completed, type this in terminal :

$ sudo aptitude install -f $ Sudo aptitude install-f

And we continue to download the debian package for TuxGuitar:

$ wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/tuxguitar/tuxguitar-1.0-rc3-ubuntu-x86.deb $ wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/tuxguitar/tuxguitar-1.0-rc3-ubuntu-x86.deb

Okay, then install it:

$ sudo dpkg -i tuxguitar-*.deb $ Sudo dpkg-i-tuxguitar *. deb

Now we remove the debian package, and we do not serve anything:

$ rm tuxguitar-*.deb $ Tuxguitar-rm *. deb

That's it! Ready to use.

KToon, Linux Alternative for Anime Studio

KToon is an open source 2d vector animation toolkit with focus on on the cartoon industry. All of the features you would expect of such a products is there: drawing tools, layers, keyframes, time line and more.

Together all of these functionalites lets you build cartoon animations. The animations can either be saves as a list of png files - or exported in Macromedia flash (swf) format. A LiveCD is available to allow anyone to try out this product.

Zenwalk Live 5.0 Has Been Released

Finally, Zenwalk Live 5.0 is available now! The new Zenwalk Live features all the latest secure & stable versions of Zenwalk 5.0 standard packages based on the current repository.

In this release, the development team also present Zen Installer which will enable you to install a standard Zenwalk system onto your computer's hard drive. You will, of course, find Zen Installer along with all other native Zenwalk system configuration tools under Menu -> System -> Zenpanel (Root password is: ZenLive).

Now, if you first use Live Clone to remaster your own LiveCD & then execute Zen Installer from that remastered LiveCD, it is interesting to note that in that case, you will install your own customized version of Zenwalk rather than the Standard version. This is very helpful if you need to deploy a highly personalized Zenwalk System on the computer park of a school, a cybercafé, an office or an organization.

(Notes: From a Zenwalk Live cession, yous simply have to personalize your desktop graphic environment as well as suppress and/or add some new programs, and then click a couple times in Live Clone, in order to create a LiveCD that will be a perfect clone of your modified cession.)

As previous release, Zenwalk Live 5.0 offers extended multilingual, Multimedia & Wifi support. Simply execute Wicd network manager from Menu -> Network, in order to configure eventual passwords & connect yourself to any available wavelan.
