Chanel Preview - Robertson Boulevard Collection

Just when I thought summer bright streak was slowing down, I catch wind of this. Chanel, in celebration of their new boutique on Robertson Boulevard in LA, is releasing a set of four limited edition polishes designed by Peter Philips.

MELROSE - A fun, hot pink destined to become spring’s must-have pedicure
SUNRISE - A primary yellow as bright and cheerful as its name
L.A. SUNSET - A warm tangerine — just the thing for an afternoon shopping splurge

Is Chanel going pop art on us? I have to say that just seeing the product image has me excited. Such a bold nail color statement seems out of character for the brand but I'm loving it. Who would have thought that such crazy shades would make it to high end chic? Maybe it means I'll stop getting stares or comments when I have bright green or yellow on my tips.

Fanatic Feedback - Toenail Art?

So I was out shopping for shoes yesterday since the nice weather seems to be here to stay. And being the nosey person I am, I can't help but notice other people's manicures and pedicures, even the fugly ones. Seriously, who goes shoe shopping with broke down feet? Clip your nails or stay home!

But I digress. The whole reason for this post was inspired by one woman's pedicure. OMG I had to stop in my tracks and ask her about it. So so cute. I'm just glad she didn't think I was crazy and run away. Turns out she had found a picture in a magazine and took it to a local nail shop that day. Her big toes were a bright bold green, which is what first caught my eye, while the rest were painted a soft pink. And they were all adorned with tiny white polka dots. Adorable! I wish I had brought my camera because I totally would have snapped a shot to share. Instead, I found this adorable ladybug design.

Welcome to The Nail Files, a new series here on All Lacquered Up. The Nail Files will feature interviews with nail industry professionals, sharing their favorite products, manicure tricks, views on nail trends, back story, etc. I really hope you all enjoy it.

To kick off the series, I'm continuing the eco-conscious theme I featured in honor of Earth Day with green celebrity manicurist Jenna Hipp. Jenna spends her days styling the tips and toes of celebs like Jessica Alba, Sophia Bush, Fergie and Paris Hilton all the while keeping a focus on using healthy, earth-friendly products. She's young (only 26) and gorgeous (a former model), yet she's already racked up an impressive list of clients and editorial work. So getting the chance to pick her brain about all things nails was truly a treat.

What made you focus on celebrity and editorial work and how did you break into the industry?
This career most definitely chose me. Prior to the nail industry, I owned a photo rep agency in Los Angeles called "Hipp Artist Management". I was an agent for a select group of fashion, beauty and celebrity photographers. Before that, I was modeling and doing makeup. Celebrity Manicurist Lisa Postma is the sole reason for my career change. She's the one who made my new life possible because she believed in me and connected me with the right people.

It seems that a lot of celebrities are playing it safe with their nails. Who really dares to be different and fashion forward with their color choices?
Fergie is awesome! I love how she's not afraid to make a statement and go all-out with her nail choices. My favorite is her domino design. Sophia Bush is also quite brave with her color choices. She loves the color Alive by SpaRitual. Kate Nauta from Transporter 2 is always using the brightest neons! I just used Orly's Green with Envy on her. It's Wild! And, of course, we can’t forget Rihanna. She rockin' a different color every week. These girls definitely know how to use their nail color as an accessory, which I think is super fun!

Fergie has been the focus of an All Lacquered Up Celebrity Nail Watch due to her outrageously bold color and nail art choices. Where does the inspiration for her different looks come from?
Fergie likes what she likes. She's not afraid to try something new and she's definitely not afraid to make bold statements with her nails! Most magazines want a really natural nail, like the shoot I did for her for the cover of Glamour Magazine. She's totally cool with that, too.

Do you see any celebrity nail trends emerging for summer? And who is wearing them?
The hottest colors this summer are bright and bold but still feminine and sophisticated. Reds and darker oranges, even the flirty pinks and lavenders are mixed with beige, grey, or orange undertones to give the nails a uniquely personal, chic finish that looks new and fresh on toes and fingers. Popping, happier, energetic reds mixed with oranges, tangerines. Avoid matching the hands with the toes. You don’t want to be too matchy-matchy!

My favorite nail color for summer is a bold, yet elegant, tangerine from SpaRitual called Plugged In. The color is flattering on just about anyone!

As far as neutral colors; matte baby pinks with a hint of melon or lilac mixed with a creamier white base. Not the usual shimmery pinks of the past several years. My favorite softer pinks are Orly's First Kiss and Cupcake. For brighter, Butterflies is great summer pink! Dolly Parton has been wearing the best pink ever like SpaRitual's Strike A Pose. I love it...and her! Seriously, if I could meet anyone in the world, it would be her!

I'm also seeing traditional summer fabrics used as nail texture. Heatherette and Tracey Ullman are rocking nails painted like the American Flag and we may also being seeing plaid and snake skin patterns too!

OK let's talk green and healthy nail care. How does being a "green" manicurist affect your ability to work with artificial nails?
I do not do acrylic or gel artificial nails at all. When I work with a celebrity who has artificial nails I usually just do an organic deep conditioning treatment as well as hand exfoliation. And, of course, a polish change!

What are your favorite green nail products? Polish, treatments, tools, etc.
These are my favs that just came out:

I've noticed brands that say they are "formaldehyde free" still contain the resin. What is the difference?
3 Free formula SHOULD be completely free of any traces of DBP, Formaldehyde and Toluene. However many lacquers say they are 3 Free but contain formaldehyde and toluene resin. Sometimes the toxic heavy metal lead acetate is included. A number of the common synthetic coloring agents have also been linked to cancer in some studies, especially the coal-tar dyes found in FD&C Blue 1 and FD&C Green 3.

What about the packaging? Does 3 Free and environmentally friendly packaging go hand in hand?
Green packaging is important as well! Green formula with environmentally hazardous bottles and packaging/manufacturing practices is so not cool! SpaRitual makes it their brand philosophy from start to finish to be eco-conscious and green. They recycle all by-products, run on the least amount of energy possible, avoid harmful chemicals and toxins during the manufacturing process and use recycled glass and FSC certified paper for all sales and marketing collateral, shipping and packaging.

Just a few things to know about how GREEN SpaRitual is...they are in eco-friendly bottles with soy based ink, recycled glass and shipped/produced to create the least stress on the environment. Do you feel that the chemical free or more natural products are just as effective and long lasting as the conventional lines?
It's known in the nail world that a lot of really natural lacquer collections usually lack color options and don't have the best staying power. This is true for a lot of brands, but not for the ones I use which include SpaRitual, Orly, and Priti. They each have over 80 shades in their collections and a staying power that matches the toughest of lacquers out there!

What steps can we as consumers take to make sure our nail services are more earth conscious both at the salon and at home?
Education is the first step. Read labels to avoid toxic ingredients. Next step, find a green brand of polishes you love and take them to the salon. Make sure you bring your base coat and top coat as well. Jessica Alba keeps green products I gave her in the glove box of her car. That way she always has them with her. She's very aware of the harm nail chemicals can cause, especially while being pregnant. She's going to be the best mom!

What are your 5 "must have" eco-friendly nail polish shades for summer?
I LOVE Orly Bon-Bon this summer! It's a creamy lilac that I used on Amanda Bynes for the cover of Seventeen and the cover of Harpers Bazaar International.
Spa Ritual Alive. This is Sophia Bush's favorite color.
Orly Passion Fruit is so fun! A very bright pink, perfect for the girls who are bringing back the 80's!
Priti Cornflower. It's that perfect Navy everyone's raving about!
Zoya Elodie. Such an incredible blend of pink and orange tones. You will get compliments everywhere you go!

And just for fun...
If you weren't a manicurist you would be...
A photo agent once again. I loved everything about it.... I just make more money doing nails!

What was the last nail polish shade you wore on your tips? on your toes?
The last time I had my nails painted was for my wedding. Funny enough, I chose "One Night Stand" from Orly's Divorcee collection. Ha! Isn't that ironic?

Oh, goodness. I'm so thankful for all my experiences. Working with Jessica Alba has got to be my favorite though! She's just been so amazing over the past year. I can't even begin to tell the world how much I love and appreciate her. She often has me over to her house for mani/pedi's along with her hairstylist, Robert Ramos, his assistant Christopher, and her makeup artist, Lauren Anderson. We have such a great time getting Jessica ready for whatever event she has that day. It was really weird though when paparazzi started taking pictures of me leaving her house! I just ran to my car as fast as I could because I wasn't expecting that at all!

OPI Summer 2008 Preview - Retro Fun in the Sun

Zoya Summer 2008 - Chit Chat

The Chit Chat collection from Zoya is just one of their summer offerings launching May 1st. Filled with golden metallic goodness, each shade has ribbons of shimmer and micro-glitter flowing throughout yet dries smooth to the touch.

Each lacquer was tested using two coats, except where noted, without a top coat. For the most part they all applied smooth and even with good pigmentation. I just wish the spectacular glitz factor would have translated on camera. I think the sunlight shot of Lianne captures it well but it's really something best admired in person.

Regarding the name change: A lot of you have asked about why there isn't a Mismas in this collection. I wanted to address you all at once. While I am extremely honored and flattered that Zoya would want to immortalize me in polish, I suggested that they name the shade after someone who would truly love and appreciate it. So naming the shade Bekka, after the color's designer, seems fitting.

Gaia - Oh how I wanted to love Gaia (the label says Gala but it's Gaia) because the color is outstanding. It has an icy white base but the ribbons of gold shimmer make it a perfect warm weather shade. Not at all dingy or white out-esque. Unfortunately, the formula is its downfall. After three coats it still wasn't opaque or even on the nail.

Erika's cool baby pink base has a slight lilac undertone but the gold shimmer gives it warmth. I think it's the combination of the two that make this pink very neutral and wearable. As you can see, with three medium coats my whites are still slightly visible so, this may work better as a sheer.

Bekka is described as a "cool chartreuse metallic". Three coats on me looks like a semi-sheer neon yellow leaning towards green. This shade just doesn't work for me and if I'm being honest, it doesn't really fit in the collection. I think coral would have been a nice transition between Erika and Lianne.

Lianne is my absolute favorite shade in the bunch. This gorgeous tangerine is right on trend and so so sparkly. The base color has a creamy melon feel but the glorious shimmer really makes it a knockout! I know I'll be sporting Lianne on my tips and toes a few times this summer.

Annie is a red orange and looks like a duo-chrome in the bottle. On the nail the red is more prominent in indirect lighting while it looks more orange in the sunlight. The golden red base makes me think this will look best on warm and dark skin tones.

Elke has a berry red base but the shimmer warms it up. I think if you're going to do a red in the summer, this is the way to go. With a glossy top coat the finish looks jelly-esque which gives it a lighter feel than your typical heavy winter red.

Go Green - "Healthier" Polish

Big 3 Free. Non-toxic. Chemical-free. Water-based. Pregnancy Safe. Healthy. Eco-conscious. These are all buzz words that the polish industry throws at us to make their product look healthier, more eco-friendly, safer, etc. but, what does it all mean and who makes what?

If you haven't read my post about Big 3 Free nail polish, I suggest you start there to familiarize yourself with the ingredients the term refers to. I use "healthier" in quotes to describe these lacquers since the jury is still out as to whether traditional formulas are really a health risk.

OK so you want a polish with less chemicals for health or environmental reasons. Which one is right for you? It all depends on the ingredients you want to avoid. Here I've broken down the brands according to what is excluded. I tried to cover the majority of the big and cult brands but if I missed one and you have ingredient info to share, please post it in the comments.

Natural Nail Polish Removers

One way to easily green up your nail care routine is to replace your nail polish remover with a natural version. Choosing a natural remover not only helps the environment but your health. They rely on water and plant based ingredients rather than chemicals that can affect the soil and water supply.

Now I know that there is a lot of concern about acetone and the possible health risks. That exposure to acetone can cause cancer. However I've also read that it's more of a concern if you are constantly surrounded by it (i.e. nail techs). On that issue I suggest you do your own research but here are a couple references I found:

I reviewed the No-Miss remover the other day but here are some more options.

Tate's The Natural Miracle Odorless Nail Polish Remover is a local Cleveland area brand. Located in charming downtown Willoughby, Tate's remover is made from 100% minerals and is dye, color, fragrance and cruelty free. They claim it takes off polish 50 times faster than traditional removers but I'd like to see the tests on that. Additionally this product is a multi-tasker. It can be used as a nail conditioner, nail strengthener, callous remover, wart eliminator, and cuticle remover. ($14.58)

Go Natural is non-toxic and contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin E to protect and condition your nail plate and cuticles. There are two versions of the remover: the first is a low odor, zero VOC formula for California residents that contains no solvents that can contribute to ground-level ozone; the second version is a completely odorless formula for use in all other states. ($5.25)

Low Odor Ingredients: Methyl acetate, butyl diglycol, aloe vera extract, Vitamin E, embittering agent, D&C yellow #11.

Green Manicure Tip: Due to the oils and other ingredients used in these natural removers I suggest swiping your nail with vinegar before polishing to remove any residue that could cause the lacquer to lift or peel.

Chanel Fall Sneek Peek

The big beauty story in today's Women's Wear Daily is about Chanel's fall collection. It's the first collection for the new creative director of makeup Peter Philips and he's taking Chanel GOLD!

The collection's nail colour, Gold Fiction, will be quite a departure from what we've been seeing from Chanel. There's no "satin" in the name, the packaging will be opaque and the price tag has significantly incresed; $30! No that's not a misprint, the lacquer will retail for $30 due to the high-end pigments used to create the shade and the opaque gold case.

Christine Dagousset executive vice president of Fragrance and Beauté for Chanel describes Gold Fiction as "...a soft honey gold, not a sparkling bright gold. It’s very wearable and very modern."

Go Green with No-Miss

Found in health food stores, like Whole Foods, No-Miss is a line of cruelty free cosmetics that includes over 150 shades of Big 3 Free nail polishes. With the formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl-pthalate and camphor eliminated these lacquers are a healthy, pregnancy safe choice.

I have been scoping No-Miss out for a while now at my local Whole Foods. I keep hoping that one of the amazing green or blue shades listed on their site will miraculously appear in the small display rack. So far, no luck.

But on my last trip I noticed a gorgeous shade that just had to come home with me. After sharing the orange trend with you, I've been on quite a kick. And oddly enough, craving orange juice like there's no tomorrow. Are orange polishes some kind of subliminal message cooked up by the Florida Orange people and polish manufacturers? I'll add it to my growing list of conspiracy theories.

On to the polish. The shade is called Tamarac Tangerine and as with all No-Miss polishes it is pigmented with natural, from-the-earth micas and oxides. I was pleasantly surprised by the formula and application. Unlike some thicker Big 3 Free polishes, this formula is thin and easy to spread. You do give up some pigmentation with that but I think it's worth it. What you see below is 3 coats of color with no top coat applied, just its own glossy sheen. Overall, I'm impressed with the quick drying time, the color range and application.

For you chemistry/ingredient geeks like me here's the run down on the No-Miss formula.
Nitrocellulose-a fiber used for viscosity. Ethylacetate, N. Butyl Acetate, Isopropyl Alcohol-solvents used to dissolve Nitrocellulose. also may contain: Mica, made from sand, cosmetic titanium dioxide, (white),cosmetic iron oxide blue, (indian paint pot grey/blue), iron oxides, earth born colors made from rocks, zinc oxide, from the earth, used to promote drying and to deflect harmful UV rays from the sun.

While I was shopping I decided to pick up the Almost Natural Polish Remover as well. Using fruit acids as a solvent this remover claims to be non-drying and gentle. I just had to see if a "green" remover could really deliver as well as its acetone laden counterparts. The answer is yes and no. Did it remove my polish without drying my nails? Absolutely! Did it work as quickly? No. But isn't it worth the few extra seconds of rubbing to make a healthier choice? The only downside for me was the smell. The touted vanilla scent comes off very plastic and strong.
Ingredients: Fruit Acid Solvent, Amber Acids (derived from plant lichens), Deionized Water, Vitamin A, Natural Vanilla Fragrance.

Chanel Summer 2008

This summer, go on safari with Chanel. Khaki gets an upscale makeover in this collection inspired by the hues of the Serengeti. As one of the few high end beauty brands to acknowledge the importance of incorporating nails into an overall look, the line includes nail polish shades for both the warm and cool toned.

I tested both lacquers with three very thin coats and found that they applied smoothly with adequate pigmentation.

Straight up, I flipped for Flamingo. I think my pal Nikki's undying love for all things pink is starting to rub off on me because I felt a bit giddy just applying the shade. I haven't been feeling pink polishes much for the past year or so but this one really got to me.

In person this bubblegum girly confection has a sparkly finish that leaves one word swirling through my head, "encrusted." It's like there is a layer of silver and pink micro-gems sprinkled atop my nails. In all honesty, I just couldn't capture Flamingo's magic in an image so I dare you to test this at a Chanel counter and leave empty handed. For pink girls, it won't be easy.

Oh how I wish I could gush over Antilope but it's just not a winner for me. I know it has its fans, including The Daily Obsession, I'm just not one of them. While it has some of the same sparkle as Flamingo, Antilope has a metallic finish that causes brush strokes I just can't overlook. To quote Cher from Clueless the finish is, "a full-on Monet. From far away, it's OK, but up close, it's a big old mess." To be fair, the golden beige shade is chic and wearable and I know my mother will LOVE taking it off my hands.

"I'm loving the new dove grays," nail blogger Michelle Mismas of All Lacquered Up tells me. They're neutrals with a slightly metallic finish, kind of like Essie's Great Expectations (here 'tis). She also mentioned the new sheers with colorful opalescent sheens, like CND's Turquoise Tint. "They're playful and different, and you don't have to worry about chipping since they barely show up." Speaking of chipping, when I asked her which celebrity is most in need of a nail makeover, Mismas didn't hesitate to call out Lindsay Lohan, who is frequently photographed with chipped polish. "These hues would be perfect for her," she says.

Fanatic Feedback - Formula

When it comes to choosing what polish to wear, formula factors into my decision as much as color. After all, if a lacquer doesn't apply well or last long, what's the point? Of course there are days when I know that I'll only be wearing a shade for an event or a couple days and then it's all about the color but when it comes to building my collection I focus on quality.

A Visit to Dashing Diva

A trip to New York isn't complete without a stop at Dashing Diva. It's the perfect destination for a little pampering and a girly good time. So when I was in the city for Fashion Week back in February, I had to pencil in a manicure with some of my beauty blogging pals.

This time we visited the Upper West Side location and I had a chance to replace my broke down four day old mani with a fab cobalt blue; Stellar Ella (see left). Pictured with me is Julia from All About the Pretty and Erika from Makeup Bag. We were joined by our fearless Beauty Blog Network leader Elke and the fabulous and charming Sam from Dark PR who made the excursion possible.

Of course in the sea of conservative french manicures and pale pinks my tips stood out but I'm sure they would have been right at home with the funkier clientele at the downtown locale. But you know me, I'll flash my bold nail personality anywhere. And the staff couldn't have been more welcoming and professional. As expected the service was top notch and extremely hygienic which just makes my desire for a Cleveland Dashing Diva even stronger. Are you listening TPTB?

I took my time perusing the massive polish display and fell in love with a few shades that I just had to make my own. They're not necessarily Spring season appropriate but they're must haves for my collection.

Black Diamonds - I first wore this shade back in November and I regretted not bringing a bottle home. And while the gunmetal gray trend may not be as strong this coming fall, I still think this color is relevant. It's got a bluish, slightly lavender base that softens the dark gray pigment. Super shiny and a relatively brush stroke-less metallic, Black Diamonds is mesmerizing.

Merlot Luscious Molly caught my attention with its subtle gold shimmer that weaves throughout this deep wine inspired shade. It's even richer in person and in warm, incandescent lighting takes on a pretty rust colored cast.

Northern Lights is a no brainer "me" hue. A blue based green with gold shimmer that is peppered with bronze, blue and green glitter, this polish is truly unique. Depending on the lighting it can lean towards either blue or green. And while it may not appeal to the mainstream, I'm in love. Though if it were up to me, this color would be called Under The Sea. It's the color you'd see while scuba diving, looking up at the sun sparkling on the surface.

Nail Trend Alert - Orange

Rihanna is the one celebrity I can rely on to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to nail trends. She isn't afraid to be bold or take risks. While most of the red carpet clan is playing it safe with french manicures and sheers, there are few that dare to be nail fashion forward.

Rihanna's red carpet look at the 2008 Grammy Awards in February was one of those stand out nail moments. Her fiery tangerine hued talons were most definitely noticed. If you want to be in vogue this summer you'll want to rock a similar look. Personally, I'm not a fan of long bright nails so I'll be sporting an active length version.

My top picks are all cremes and range from muted mango to blazing traffic cone orange so there's something for everyone. With such a bold shade you don't need the extra glitz just high shine so cremes fit the bill. It's more chic and modern.
