I was amazed to see the TV program, 'Human Weapon: The history of Judo-the science of Samurai' on History channel .

Just go to the website, and check the Today's picks section.
Some Judo techniques are explained such as Uchimata, Okuri-eri-jime (choke), and Ude-jyuji(arm-bar) etc. The TV program was very well organized, telling us the history and tradition of Judo, as well as its science.

Must see! and once you see it, come to the practice at UI field house.
The real is there!!

Our junior player, Jasmine, was interviewed by Gazette newspaper, and the article is in Gazette!! Click the link to check the article. Since she is going to compete Pam-American Judo Championship in November at Colombia as a representative of U.S.A, no wonder to be on the newspaper. Also, the movie-style interview can be seen here (Click!). In the movie-clip, our junior players are cooperating with Jasmine. For example, see Rogan's great Tai-otoshi at the end of the movie.

Also, the fall semester will start soon and we are waiting for the new students! Fliers are available at several places on campus, and this website. Feel free to come and watch our practice.

Almost all divisions, players from our team are got nationally/locally ranked, although the scale of the team is not so large. In old Japanese proverb, we say this situation: 山椒は小粒でもぴりりと辛い!

means 'Even just a small amount of Zanthoxylum piperitum taste very spicy!' Let's keep moving forward in the fall semester seasons, be spicy! Enjoy your summer!

Competition result for VEISHEA on April 22, 2007

On April 22nd (Sun), VEISHEA Judo tournament was held at Ames, IA. From our team, four of senior players competed; John, Sergio, Peter, and Nobu. Belows are their achievement.

Sergio: Competed in All ranked -66kg division

3rd in Novice light weight

1st in All ranked -66kg division

John: Competed in All ranked -73kg and -81kg divisions

1st in -81kg division

Peter: Competed in All ranked -73kg division

4th in -73kg division

Nobu: Competed in All ranked -73kg and -81kg divisions

3rd in -73kg division

Congratulations on their achievement! Competition photos and the results for junior division are to be added soon. Stay tuned! Although our team size is not so large compared to the other teams in Iowa, all senior players got ranked/medals and it is a big achievement. In addition, nobody got seriously injured. The next one could be Iowa Games on July 14th, 2007.

Updates of our friends

Do you remember Syota and Nori? Two wrestlers came from Japan and practiced with us. Now, Syota obtained his CSCS (Certificate of Strength and Conditioning Specialist) in the US, and is now hired as a coach of Wrestling and Judo team at Yamanashi Gakuin University at Yamanashi district, Japan. On this January, he organized the seminar for the coaches. See his nervous face : )

For Nori, he trained his wrestling in Warsaw, Poland for three month. Our head coach and coach, Dr.Krajewski and Mr.Goska helped a lot for his visit in Poland. He trained at Polish police and army team for wrestling and Judo. Back in Japan he is now in Nihon Sports Science University, Tokyo, and is aiming to Peking Olympic on 2008. His first qualification match is All Japan Championship on June 9th and 10th. Nobu is going to watch the competition, so let's wait for his report!

The local tournament, VEISHEA, is going to be held at Iowa State University on April 22. So far, Peter, John, and Nobu are going to compete in their own division. But the problem is... they are all overweighted!!! John and Peter are supposed to be in -73kg division, and Nobu is supposed to be in -66kg. Why do they gain their weight?! Anyway, VEISHEA is a carnival, and they may not have to care about their weight. Good luck on their matches, and enjoy!! Also, junior class players are going to compete. Coach Finly is going to protocol them.

Wendy is going to compete in USA Senior National, which is one of the largest Judo tournament in the US at the same day as VEISHEA. As she achieved 1st in Northglenn National, she will do a good job in the Senior National either, and we hope so! Good luck on her matches!!

Our current team member, Wendy, is going to compete at Northglenn Championships at Denver, Corolado this weekend in senior -57kg division. Rich will be coaching her. Also, junior class students are going to compete. Our former team member, Karl, (currently at Univ.Corolado) is going to compete at senior elete -73kg division. Good luck on their matches!!

Nobu competed in the tournament last year, whihc was really tough days for him lost at 1st match...:( See the last year's competition photos as below.

Team Judo America Iowa City Website started!!

Do you know that we have Judo practice at Field house at the University of Iowa?

Judo is the martial arts established by Jigoro Kano in Japan on 1882, and is now recognized as one of the official Olympic event. Train yourself in mentally and physically!

The Judo America Iowa City club is located in Iowa City, Iowa. The club uses facilities and organizational support of the Recreational Services of the University of Iowa. Practices are held three times for the seniors. The dojo is located in Room 511S Field House, which is equipped with a 24 m by 9 m high-quality tatami on a spring loaded support.

Members of the club have competed at state and national level tournaments.
