This time the motive force is not <a href="http://www.thrustssc.com/thrustssc/contents_frames.html">jet engines</a>, <a href="http://www.jcbdieselmax.com/html/home.php">diesel power</a> or <a href="http://www.steamcar.co.uk/">steam</a>. Its the wind.<br /><br /><br />Called Greenbird, it was developed by English engineer Richard Jenkins and private 'green' electricity supplier, Ecotricity. On March 26 in a dry lakebed in California, the craft broke the world land speed record for wind-powered vehicles by more than 10 miles an hour, setting the new record at 126.2 mph. Greenbird uses a solid, vertical sail shaped like an aircraft wing to capture the wind. The craft's unique low-drag design, coupled with the power of "apparent wind" (a combination of true wind and the wind force created by forward motion), allows it to travel at up to five times the true wind speed.<br /><br />It's a graceful thing to look at, but like most other LSR vehicles, not really practical for everyday driving.<br /></span><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8441140909101787085-3079780533271235?l=sabcc.blogspot.com'/></div>Rodneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16684947103800880958mowog@sabcc.org0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441140909101787085.post-15360480977244039522009-07-13T09:02:00.003-05:002009-07-13T09:18:54.856-05:00It Lives!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/SltBwQ-0zpI/AAAAAAAAATQ/8J3VM2LRcSs/s1600-h/phoenix.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 188px; height: 172px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/SltBwQ-0zpI/AAAAAAAAATQ/8J3VM2LRcSs/s320/phoenix.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357948479135338130" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">You may remember reading <a href="http://sabcc.blogspot.com/2009/05/sleeping-mgb-is-about-to-wake-up.html">an entry is this humble blog </a>about my brother's efforts to get his '76 MGB on the road after its lengthy slumber. It seems that it somehow ingested air in the bra</span><span style="font-family:arial;">ke lines during the trip </span><span style="font-family:arial;">down to St. John's Lawn Party and I've been both too busy and too sorry to go into the garage to look into it. Similarly sized American sixes make think of pickup trucks. There's nothing to compare to the sound of a big Healey, a TR6, MGC or the sublime E-Type. The main item of business was the selection of a charity to receive a portion of the proceeds from British Car Festival 2009. <a href="http://www.bgcsouthal.org/">The Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama</a> was nominated and Donna Cunningham spoke at length about the funding plight the organization was in. The newspapers here are carrying stories about the demise of Pontiac and the sale of Hummer and Saturn to a Chinese firm and Roger Penske, respectively. On the other side of the pond Opel is likely going to become the property of contract car builder Magna.<br /><br />That brings us to Vauxhall. As it stands now, Vauxhall will be packaged with Opel in the Magna deal. Magna has said publicly that it intends to wind down the Vauxhall name and will replace it in the UK with the Opel badge.<br /><br />For a number of years Opel and Vauxhall have been sharing the same designs and</span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/Si5ee-POddI/AAAAAAAAARw/EsRe-QHzMQA/s1600-h/1859250622_aa5a97e61e.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 262px; height: 199px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/Si5ee-POddI/AAAAAAAAARw/EsRe-QHzMQA/s320/1859250622_aa5a97e61e.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345313693931304402" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;"> model names with Opel building left hand drive versions and Vauxhall concentrating on right drive and parts building for both UK and Germany. In the US many Opel designs are Saturn-branded. It is very possible that Opel's continental plants will be the sole source for Opels in the future.<br /><br />Since most of us are into the sports car scene, it might be of interest to many of you to know that the first universally acknowledged sports car carried the Vauxhall griffin badge. The Vauxhall Prince Henry was built from 1911 to 1913 and was a powerful open top tourer that won several early motoring competitions including Brooklands speed trials and long distance rallying.<br /><br />In 1925 Vauxhall became a GM subsidiary company, giving the General a weapon to fight Ford in the UK. For a time in the '50s and '60s, some Vauxhall models were imported to the US and sold at Pontiac dealers, again to respond to the "English" Fords on offer here.<br /><br />As British car enthusiasts, we've seen this soap opera before in the decline, nationalization and subsequent breakup of the company that was British Leyland. </span><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8441140909101787085-528136030796899837?l=sabcc.blogspot.com'/></div>Rodneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16684947103800880958mowog@sabcc.org0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441140909101787085.post-85308350432205196672009-06-07T13:59:00.003-05:002009-06-07T14:20:08.114-05:00Visiting the New MINI Dealership in Pensacola<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/SiwS2QxoGFI/AAAAAAAAARo/YIvwjIH6SB4/s1600-h/open-road.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 289px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/SiwS2QxoGFI/AAAAAAAAARo/YIvwjIH6SB4/s320/open-road.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344667581207287890" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">While trolling the web the other evening, I found a posting on<span style="font-family:arial;"> a Mini forum about an invitation to visit the new MINI dealership under construction in Pensacola. The <a href="http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/pages/accueil_gb.html">24 hours of LeMans</a> is the 13th and 14th and will be on SPEED TV. I try to watch as much as possible live, but it's tough when I'm the only one in the house that really enjoys it.<br /><br />Although it was panned by critics when it was released in 1970, the Steve McQueen movie of the same name is one of my favorites. I know, I know, the dialog is pretty weak and the story is a bit lame but the racing scenes are to die for. The golden age of LeMans - Porsche vs Ferrari - it just doesn't get any better. Here's a YouTube clip that a fan put together. Enjoy it.<br /><br /><object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ls08-F6I5Ss&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ls08-F6I5Ss&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object><br /><br />Maybe the club should do LeMans for a movie night. Located on Baldwin County 104 just east of downtown Silverhill, the park is shady, well-kept and has a grill and a very nice covered picnic pavilion with tables and electricity.<br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/Sh8tEwcX4EI/AAAAAAAAARY/M75QEfX6Nx4/s1600-h/1+manet+picnic.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 272px; height: 225px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/Sh8tEwcX4EI/AAAAAAAAARY/M75QEfX6Nx4/s320/1+manet+picnic.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341037242831331394" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">We'll try to eat around noon, but come on by whenever. After the near -tropical storm South Alabama endured on Saturday, no one could be quite sure what the weather was going to do. Weather radar showed light rain bands running north from the Gulf. An eyeball cast toward the skies saw scattered clouds and lots of blue.<br /><br />I went to the rendezvous site for the trip to Magnolia Springs and was soon joined by Jack & Linda Ross and Richard Cunningham. We stretched our 9:00 AM departure to 9:15 to make sure any late arrivals had a chance to join us. No one else came so off we went.<br /></span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/ShoPz8P_1cI/AAAAAAAAARQ/cSDgN96Unjw/s1600-h/P5230002.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 275px; height: 205px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_j182GPp9P7Y/ShoPz8P_1cI/AAAAAAAAARQ/cSDgN96Unjw/s320/P5230002.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339597693222114754" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-family:arial;">The ride down sce</span></span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-family:arial;">nic 98 was beautiful. It seems like there were more joggers and bicyclists than cars. We pulled into Fairhope and parked our cars at the site where SABCC was born. I thought the Mini set a pretty </span></span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-family:arial;">quick pace, but one of the Jaguar drivers begged to differ. Oh, well at least no one overheated.<br /><br />Turning into Magnolia Springs we passed several lovely old houses and the famous <a href="http://www.jessesrestaurant.com/">Jesse's restaurant</a> which had a large sign out front advertising a "Huge Meat Sale". Being in the Mini I had no room for huge meat so we pressed on to St. Johns.<br /><br />We found our usual spot under the oaks and parked the cars. We enjoyed the fresh breezes and shade of the trees until it was time to partake of one of the lunches sold to raise funds for the parish. The bar b que was great and the portions were generous.
