Jackie Sleper website: http://www.jackiesleper.com

Imágenes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dulceyamargo

Oficina de prensa:
Vito Abba, responsable de prensa
Studio Abba - Corso Italia, 6 - 50123 Florencia, Italia
info@studioabba.com
http://www.studioabba.com

Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-51480144934809422572009-01-15T11:19:00.003-06:002009-01-15T11:30:52.751-06:00Press release
The Museo de la Ciudad Santiago de Querétaro to host Jackie Sleper's exhibition dedicated to Mexico

In January, February and March 2009, Dutch artist Jackie Sleper will exhibit "Dulce y Amargo" in the Museo de la Ciudad Santiago de Querétaro, Querétaro, Mexico

From 21 January - 21 March 2009, the Museo de la Ciudad Santiago de Querétaro, Querétaro, Mexico, will host the famous Dutch artist’s, Jackie Sleper, touring exhibition "Dulce y Amargo" inspired by, and dedicated to, Mexico and the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and curated by Matty Roca.

Jackie Sleper, the winner of the section “Sculpture and Installation” at the Florence Biennale 2007, has always been fascinated by Mexico and the artist Frida Kahlo, for whom she has a profound admiration and so, when she received an offer from Matty Roca to depict her vision of Mexico she readily accepted. Over the course of the following two years, Jackie Sleper spent many months in situ, about which she says “I took in everything around me, spoke with lots of people and, in particular, got a sense of the country. My previous love of Mexico only grew stronger."

Her works are at times reminiscent of a variety of artists: Rivera, Orozco, Tamayo and Pollock. Jackie Sleper assumes absolute freedom in applying various techniques and introducing experimental elements: her work is characterised by combinations of photography and painting, and the use of mixed media. In addition to painting, Jackie also creates objects using a variety of materials, which she then transforms into wholly a new and surprising entity, such as the wonderful and fun piece “Rocatizada”, dedicated to her curator Matty Roca. The artist other works to be guided by a profound sense of humanity, and she is an artist in the truest sense of the word, her work has always been grounded in her exploration of the human existence and its significance. The art critic, Wim Van der Beek said about Jackie’s work prior to her 2007 Netherlands exhibition: “Jackie Sleper’s aim is not to shock, but to make things tangible and manageable. She does not want to magnify injustices, but to offer solutions in the form of positive and unorthodox ways of seeing.”

The Querétaro show is the first step in 2009 of Jackie’s touring exhibition. Jackie’s exhibitions showing throughout Mexico in 2008 and 2009 are all being curated by Matty Roca, art historian, museum curator and art critic. They have so far been a huge success, the first was held at the Museo de la Cultura Maya in Chetumal in March and April 2008, in May-June at the Museo de la Isla in Cozumel, at the Museum of Modern Art of Gómez Palacio in July and August, and most recently in the Museo El Aguacate in Durango.

The artist will, as always, be present at the vernissage of "Dulce y Amargo" on 21 January, along with important local personalities from the political, cultural and educational scene in Mexico and from the Dutch and European communities living in the state of Querétaro.

Jackie Sleper was born in Amsterdam and studied at the Utrecht Academy for Visual Arts. Between 1988 and 1995 she spent time in Ireland, Spain and Prague for study purposes. Works produced in her home country, the Netherlands, include a tile plateau in honour of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, commissioned by the municipality of Utrecht, and ‘light objects’ for the Kruisheren Hotel, a design establishment that opened in Maastricht in 2005. Outside the Netherlands, she has exhibited in Antwerp (Art-Event), Stockholm (Art Fair), Marbella (Marb Art – Feria Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo), Geneva (Europ’Art), Klagenfurt (Biennale Austria), Salzburg (Mozart Festival), Florence (Museo Diocesano and Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea), Milan (Studio D’Ars), New York (Carrozzini Von Buhler Gallery and CVB Space), and in Mexico. One of her sculptures, "Modestia", was exhibited during the Venice Biennale, at Open 2007. She won the 1st prize for “Sculpture and Installation” at the Florence Biennale 2007.

For further information:

Jackie Sleper’s website: http://www.jackiesleper.com

Images:
You can also see images of Jackie’s art at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dulceyamargo

For journalists only:
High resolution files of the images or other press related information can be requested directly from the press office:
Vito Abba, press officer
Studio Abba - Corso Italia, 6 - 50123 Florence, Italy
info@studioabba.com
http://www.studioabba.com

Visitors to Jackie’s exhibitions in Mexico can also upload photos taken during the exhibitions on Flickr and share them with
http://www.flickr.com/groups/dulceyamargo
At the end of the exhibition series, the authors of the three photos that Jackie likes most, will each receive a signed lithograph of one of her works.

For general comments contact:
dulceyamargo@yahoo.com

Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-60719346399189046672008-12-07T08:11:00.003-06:002008-12-07T08:23:07.115-06:00Jackie Sleper on NY Arts MagazineThe Sacred and Divine

By Edward Rubin

It’s easy to think of mankind and nature when coming face to face with the work of artist Jackie Sleper, who is based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. For in every work of art that she creates, be it a painting, a photograph, or one of her intricate jewel-like sculptures, no matter what the subject matter is, landscape or portrait, sectarian or religious, there is something sacred and divine emanating from her work that captures both the transitory nature of beauty and the fragility of life. No doubt this magic-like melding of the earthly and the spiritual, which forms the basis of the artist’s philosophy, as well as informs her artistic output, stems in large part from her earlier education in agriculture and horticulture, even before enrolling at the Utrecht Academy for Visual Arts, where she studied painting and photography. It was at the academy, as a young lady, living and working on a farm, while pursuing her agricultural degree, that the artist was exposed to the life and death cycles of plants, animals, and the earth that supports them, on a daily basis. What better way to prepare oneself to be an artist.

Though Sleper likes to say that she was “born an artist,” it wasn’t until she was seven or eight years old when her aunt gave her a book on Frida Kahlo that she was fully awakened to her life’s calling. “I knew right then and there, and I thank Frida for this, that making art, which I was already doing much to the disapproval of my parents, was how I was going to spend the rest my life.” For the past 25 years, first locally, then countrywide, and now internationally, Sleper, who has also studied her craft in Spain, Ireland, and Czechoslovakia, has been building a reputation of some import. She was invited to participate in the Biennale Austria in 2006, and OPEN10 International Sculptures and Installations Exhibition in 2007, which is held annually in Lido, Venice. In the same year she participated in the Florence Biennale, where an international jury awarded her first prize for her sculpture and painting installations, Modestia and Dulce Y Amargo.

Sleper has been gifted with boundless energy. Every minute of her waking life, both day and night, she can be found tending to the needs of her large family, creating her art, and planning her next ten moves, sometimes doing all three at once. Being interested in world cultures and how people live their daily lives, all of which she appears to digest effortlessly during her travels, lately she has been focusing her attention on exhibiting abroad. At the Florence Biennale in 2005, the Mexico-based curator Matty Roca, also a biennale juror, was so impressed with Sleper’s soul-catching Chinese paintings and sculptures, which developed out of the artist’s trips to China, that she invited Sleper to visit her in Mexico. The resultant affair—the artist’s love of Mexico and its people—sent Sleper back home, where she spent a year channeling the soul of the Mexican people into 25 paintings and sculptures. It also led to a Roca-curated eight-museum exhibition that is currently traveling in Mexico through May 2009.

Sleper has been fascinated by Mexico ever since her early bonding with Kahlo. “Till this day whenever I look into Kahlo’s face I get goose bumps,” she said. “Seeing her eyes is like looking into my own. As an art student I wrote many stories and made many sketches and drawings about Mexico in my journal. Having my work travel to Mexico now, something that I never even dreamed of is like a prophecy fulfilled, one that brings me full circle. Growing up, I read every book about Frida that I could get my hands on. I related to Kahlo’s loneliness. I felt that we both shared a great love of humanity. Sure her work is very personal…all those self-portraits. But she was able to turn the personal into the universal, so that we all could share the pain and joy of living. This is my goal as an artist. When people see my work, I want them to feel alive, to feel good, and to be wondrously happy in the knowing that despite how hard and painful life can be that there is great joy to be had. This is why I titled my exhibition Dulce Y Amargo, which means bittersweet in English.”

Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-76644146154360918952008-11-12T05:22:00.001-06:002008-11-12T05:22:24.771-06:00Opening in Durango / Inauguración en Durango

Report for the TVUJED news of the "Dulce y Amargo" opening by Gerardo Efrain Flores Solis

Report for the TVUJED news of the "Dulce y Amargo" press conference by Gerardo Efrain Flores Solis

Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-86631676687308594672008-11-06T09:33:00.004-06:002008-11-06T09:47:15.092-06:00Opening in Durango / Inauguración en Durango

Jackie Sleper, Lic.

In addition to painting, Jackie also creates objects using a variety of materials, which she then transforms into wholly a new and surprising entity, such a the wonderful and fun piece “Rocatizada”, dedicated to her curator Matty Roca.

The Durango show is the fourth and last step in 2008 of Jackie’s touring exhibition and she is delighted to be holding in a city which she feels has a close link with her own home town of Utrecht. The museum is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city centre, built in 1890 and was the residence of the family of Francisco Gomez Palacio, son of the famous governor.

Jackie’s exhibitions showing throughout Mexico in 2008 and 2009 are all being curated by Matty Roca, art historian, museum curator and art critic. They have so far been a huge success, the first was held at the Museo de la Cultura Maya in Chetumal in March and April of this year, in May-June at the Museo de la Isla in Cozumel, and most recently at the Museum of Modern Art of Gómez Palacio in July and August.

The artist will, as always, be present at the vernissage of "Dulce y Amargo" on 5 November, at the Museo Regional de Durango-UJED “Angel Rodríguez Solórzano”, along with important local personalities from the political, cultural and educational scene in Mexico and from the Dutch and European communities living in the state of Durango.

Jackie Sleper's website: http://www.jackiesleper.com

Images:
You can also see images of Jackie’s art at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dulceyamargo

For journalists only:
High resolution files of these images or other press related information can be requested directly from the press office:
Vito Abba, press officer
Studio Abba - Corso Italia, 6 - 50123 Florence - Italy
info@studioabba.com
http://www.studioabba.com

Visitors to Jackie’s exhibitions in Mexico can also upload photos taken during the exhibitions on Flickr and share them with
http://www.flickr.com/groups/dulceyamargo

At the end of the exhibition series, the authors of the three photos that Jackie likes most, will each receive a signed lithograph of one of her works.

For general comments contact:

Jackie Sleper website: http://www.jackiesleper.com

Imágenes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dulceyamargo

Oficina de prensa:
Vito Abba, responsable de prensa
Studio Abba - Corso Italia, 6 - 50123 Florencia - Italia
info@studioabba.com
http://www.studioabba.com

Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-79135370477553385372008-09-02T04:59:00.006-05:002008-09-16T02:45:07.519-05:00Announcement
Due to the flooding which destroyed part of the city of Parral, the exhibition of Jackie Sleper's art work which was to open on 4th September at the Museum of the Palacio Pedro de Alvarado has been postponed with the date to be confirmed.

Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-56302969420439475702008-08-15T20:57:00.005-05:002008-08-15T20:57:57.550-05:00Video of the opening in Gómez Palacio / Video de la inauguración en Gómez Palacio

Dulce y Amargohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819001009789734132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401535787914471557.post-79262825604878931542008-07-04T05:54:00.006-05:002008-08-04T05:37:02.595-05:00Opening in Gómez Palacio / Inauguración en Gómez Palacio
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230609162190612098" style="DISPLAY: block; The first two exhibitions were held at the Museo de la Cultura Maya in Chetumal in March and April of this year and in May-June at the Museo de la Isla in Cozumel, both of which were considered to be a huge success. Manuel Ramírez López, Director of the Casa de Cultura, where this next exhibition is to take place, has said that he is honored to be hosting Mrs Sleper’s exhibition.
The artist will be present at the opening of "Dulce y Amargo" at the Museum of Modern Art of Gómez Palacio on the evening of 3 July, along with important local personalities from the political, cultural and educational scene in Mexico and from the Dutch community living in the state of Durango.

Jackie Sleper, the winner of the section “Sculpture and Installation” at the Florence Biennale 2007, has always been fascinated by Mexico and the artist Frida Kahlo, for whom she has a profound admiration. In 2005, she received an invitation from Matty Roca to depict her vision of Mexico and over the course of two years Jackie Sleper, together with her husband and children, spent many months in the country, about which she says that: “I took in everything around me, spoke with lots of people and, in particular, got a sense of the country. My previous love of Mexico only grew stronger.... Over the next two years my work will be travelling to various museums in Mexico – something I would never have dared dream of as a child. I feel like I am on top of the world. This is the link that completes the chain."

In addition to painting, Jackie also creates objects using a variety of materials, which she then transforms into wholly a new and surprising entity. The artist allows all her work to be guided by a profound sense of humanity, and she is an artist in the truest sense of the word: her work has always been grounded in her exploration of the human existence and its significance.

Matty Roca: “I have been able to witness Jackie Sleper’s development – as a photographer, painter and sculptor – at first hand. Every painting is an intensely personal creation and expression, presenting the world as she perceives it. She is sensitive, intense, mysterious and subtle, but also possesses a strong personality, conveying this in her paintings with exceptional clarity, so that she is comprehensible for one and all.”

Calendar Mexico 2008

3 July - 25 August
Museo de Arte Moderno
Londres y Bilboa
Col.

Exposiciones Internacionales:

3 Julio – 25 Agosto
Museo de Arte Moderno
Londres y Bilboa
Col. Cozumel is the second Mexican location for her "Dulce y Amargo" exhibition, which forms part of the series of exhibitions that the famous Dutch artist will be showing in Mexico in 2008 and 2009, all being curated by Matty Roca, art historian and art critic. After the success of the first exhibition in Chetumal, David Domínguez Povedano, General Director of the Museo de la Isla in Cozumel has announced that there is great interest in the forthcoming event.

Jackie Sleper has always been fascinated by Mexico and Frida Kahlo, for whom she has a profound admiration. In 2005, she received an invitation from Matty Roca to depict her vision of Mexico. Over the course of two years Jackie Sleper, together with her husband and children, spent many months in the country, where she created many of her works. Jackie says: “Matty Roca became a dear friend. She showed me Mexico. I took in everything around me, spoke with lots of people and, especially, got a sense of the country".

Her modern works are at times reminiscent of Rivera, Orozco, Tamayo and Pollock. Jackie Sleper assumes absolute freedom in applying various techniques and introducing experimental elements: her work is characterised by combinations of photography and painting, and the use of mixed media. In addition to paintings, Jackie creates objects that incorporate a variety of multiple materials, which she transforms into wholly new and surprising concepts.

Jackie Sleper's work Modestia, was exhibited during La Biennale di Venezia, at Open 2007. She won the 1st prize for “Sculpture and Installation” at the Florence Biennale 2007.

CALENDAR 2008 (dates to be confirmed):

9/05 - 20/06 Museo de la Isla de Cozumel
3/07 - 25/08 Museo de Arte Moderno de Gòmez Palacios.
4/09 - 23/10 Museo Palacio Pedro de Alvarado
6/11 - 12 (closing date TBC) Museo del Aguacate, Durango

For further information:

Jackie Sleper
http://www.jackiesleper.com/

Images:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dulceyamargo

Press office
Studio Abba - Corso Italia, 6 - 50123 Florence, Italy
info@studioabba.com

It will be possible to follow the various stages of “Dulce y amargo” thanks to the information and images that will be posted on http://www.dulceyamargo.com/
Visitors to Jackie’s exhibitions in Mexico, can also upload photos taken during the exhibitions on Flickr and share them with http://www.flickr.com/groups/dulceyamargo
At the end of the exhibition series, the authors of the three photos that Jackie likes most, will each receive a signed lithograph of one of her works.
For general comments contact:
