The date of this picture is unknown. My Great Grandmother was Anishinaabe. My Great Grandfather was Anishinaabe and French. I just recently discovered this picture over three weeks ago. I have been wanting to see a picture of my Great Grandparents for a long time and finally it showed up. I am named after my Great Grandmother whose name is Cecelia. To see this picture was like a homecoming for me.

The second picture is of my Grandfather and me. This picture was taken in 1982. I love this picture very much. I have always felt like my Grandpa has been a guide for me throughout my life. He had a very hard life and denied being Native throughout much of his life to survive in the world. I feel like this picture is telling him that I can help to create a better way for the generations to come.

This video is called, "I Am Anishinaabe." I love writing! The poem below was posted to my World Pulse journal. So I thought I would dig it out and post it here. I am answering Flying Eagle Woman's question today.

Her question: What is YOUR favorite traditional practice in your homeland?

My Answer

Although I have yet to participate in manoomin (wild rice) harvesting this is something I am excited to do when the time comes. The spiritual aspect goes generations back. It has played a central role in the tribal life of the Anishinaabe people. Manoomin has been a main food source so it is exciting to see so many of our people reclaiming this traditional practice. There are efforts being taken place to keep manoomin from being genetically modified. This traditional practice is a very important part of my culture. I am glad to see it flourish again!

Here is a video on restoring manoomin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

"The Manoomin Project is restoring wild rice to northern Michigan thru the hands of at-risk teenagers with help from American Indian guides. Over 100 teens have planted more than one ton of wild rice seeds during the past four summers thanks to guides from several Native American communities and other volunteers including from Marquette County Juvenile Court. The wild rice project was founded by the Cedar Tree Institute in Marquette, Michigan and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community to help the teenagers learn respect for themselves, nature and American Indian heritage. The teens can also learn about faith and are taught social issues like racism against Native American. Normally held in September, the fourth annual planting was delayed until November 2007 due to lo water levels in Wisconsin where the seeds are purchased. Manoomin Project volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has the story."

Links

Cedar Tree Institute - a healing spirit restoring a land and its people

Save Wild Rice - Keep it wild! We had an above ground pool in my family as a kid. For fun my parents put all sorts of bumper stickers on it. One of the stickers was a pro-life sticker. My Mom is and always has been pro-choice. Later when I asked her about it she said that she just had it and put it on the pool to add to the collection of stickers. I don't know why I remember that one in particular but I did.

I read daily about reproductive rights, feminism, and pro-choice issues. I will always read about these issues. All night I have been reading the updates on the Planned Parenthood facebook page. Earlier this evening I found out about the Stupak amendment. Representative Bart Stupak is in Michigan's 1st congressional district which represents most of Northern Michigan and the entire Upper Peninsula. Since I just moved to my new community I am getting involved here in Northern Michigan. Mr. Stupak is not my representative but as soon as I found it I have been waiting to hear the results of the vote that took place tonight. The update is that the Stupak/Pitts Amendment was adopted. 64 democrats voted yes on this amendment.

Please make sure you take action and contact your representative. I just want to know why we are taking steps backwards on women's health? Its almost 2010!

Please click on these news stories below and find out how you can take action:

See how your representative voted here.

In Pelosi's House, 64 Democrats Sell Women Out

Read more at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/taylor-marsh/in-pelosis-house-64-democ_b_349769.html&cp

Read more at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/taylor-marsh/in-pelosis-house-64-democ_b_349769.html&cp

PLANNED PARENTHOOD CONDEMNS PASSAGE OF STUPAK/PITTS AMENDMENT

- - - - - - - - - -

Healer Notes on This Amendment...

As a healer I may feel, see or know things long before I know why I am experiencing what I am. It is not much later, maybe a few hours or days later, that I know why I felt what I did. Earlier today I went to a community event. I arrived home from the event feeling a bit tired and exhausted. Its not like me to feel tired or exhausted because I am a very high energy person. Usually if my energy is low it means that I am doing some healing work either on myself or others.

Right away upon arriving home I made some food and took a nap. During my nap I was trying to do some energy and healing work on myself so I could make diagnosis of why I was feeling so off. I am a sensitive spirit as most healer's are. It is a gift to see, feel and know things. To transmute energy, heal and to help others heal is a blessing. On the contrary, it can be very challenging to go through the heaviness and the weight of toxic energies. I have learned through the years to feel, allow, transform and transmute energies. I have fined tuned the process in the last year so I am spot on with what is happening with me. Tonight during my nap I saw energy that was being moved from the base to the top of my spine. Yet, I didn't understand why this energy was not flowing through me. Instead it was being trapped in my body. I didn't know what this was connected to and had not read about the Stupak/Pitts Amendment yet. Also, during the day I felt a heaviness around my throat. I didn't know why I felt this because I have been working for years on clearing my throat chakra from all of the oppression and negative energy that was located there. I felt like I had cleared a lot of energy from this chakra but apparently I was picking up something else.

After my nap I smudged to clear my energy. My throat stops feeling tight. I meditated for a bit and ground into the Earth. I turn on my laptop and log onto facebook. I read what is going on the Planned Parenthood facebook page. I put the pieces together. It makes sense that I see energy going up and down my spine. The whole body is important in healing work but the spine is very important. The spine is where energy from Heaven and Earth can blend. During my nap I realized that my energy was being trapped. This amendment traps women. My throat was feeling tight because this Amendment silences us as women and takes our rights away. Maybe my throat had a tight feeling for those who feel like they could not speak about this issue? My hope is that now after tonight more women step up to the plate for our rights. We can't allow our rights to be taken away from. I was seeing and feeling what I was tonight for a reason. Now I can direct my energies to choice and voice.

Okay... its late here... goodnight all!

Arrived in Northern Michigan

Dear Blog Readers ~

I have arrived in Northern Michigan! I was laid off from my job down in the city and in a matter of days the Universe, Creator, and Goddess aligned me with a new job in Northern Michigan! I am moving near Lake Michigan and in Anishinaabe territory! It is so exciting because I have been praying to the land to bring me home. Detroit Metro is not home - the energy here is very dense and heavy. It does not serve me (not sure that it ever has) and I am now free from it! Home is the land, forest, sand dunes, small lakes, rivers and Lake Michigan! Home is a strong community and a smaller community of people. I have a half dozen good friends in Northern Michigan and I hope to make some new connections. I have realized recently that I thrive best in smaller places, towns and organizations. So here I go! I love Northern Michigan! The forest and the big lake will now be my neighbors!

You can check out a few previous posts below that show more pictures of Northern Michigan. The beauty and bounty of the land and life are revealed in these posts:

Why I />The grass below my running shoes,
I walk home,
Walking under the train bridge,
Thinking about the Earth,
The healing,
I am twenty years old,
My running career just died,
My heart is on fire,
Blackened,
I run,
Hate,
The land I cannot feel,
Torment of the past,
I live in self deprecation,
Radio,
Loud music,
Stereo out of control,
Dark spirits,
No angels,
I am twenty four years old,
My healing has begun,
I try to love me,
I try to love my body,
My whole self,
Its not working,
I crumble,
But,
Begin rebuilding,
I am here now,
Twenty-seven years old,
I am here,
Healed,
Ancestors show me my journey,
What I have chosen to face,
What I have chose to heal,
And I smile at them,
They smile back at me,
They point down my path,
There is a bright light,
And at the end,
Ancestors wait,
Elders wait,
Smiling as I make my way down this road,
Arriving,
Now.
I wrote this poem today while on a break at work today. It just had to come out. I was a cashier at health food stores and coffee shops during undergraduate school. I was also a collegiate athlete for two years in cross country and track before I worked most of these jobs. I was a hard core runner! But when I quit running in college my life as I had formerly known it was over. My confidence in who I was crashed fast. When I quit running I had to work whatever part time job I could find because my job when I was an athlete was running full time and then some. I had low self esteem and lacked confidence to ask about doing internships in my department in college. I wandered lost for many years after I quit running. By the time I got to graduate school I was encouraged by my professors and people in my department to do internships. I have been rebuilding my confidence and life since 2002. Its been 7 years since I quit running and college. I tried to run over the years and it never felt right. I tried running recently and it feels so good again. Finally, it is a match! The poem below is a reflection of energy I am purging and releasing. It can hurt to revisit this but it is essential to write this to bring wholeness in my life again.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Anger at the Register

I've got anger at the register,
Sidelined running career,
I sit on the bench,
With my hands covering my eyes,
Covering my tears,
I've got anger at the register,
I'm Native,
You can't see me,
I cover my body,
I run away,
I've got anger at the register,
Customer service,
Poverty level wage,
Beer bottle curse,
Wripped and torn receipts,
I've got anger at the register,
Ringing up your groceries,
Bagging them,
Green counter,
Dirty counter,
I've got anger at the register,
A hole in my jeans,
In junior high,
Principal assuming I was dirt poor,
Stigmatized working middle class Native youth,
I've got anger at the register,
I can't eat,
I can't sleep,
I can't be me,
I breathe your toxic air,
I've got anger at the register,
I am just another women of color,
Ringing up someone's groceries,
While I go hungry,
In more ways than one,
I've got anger at the register,
Because I want peace in my life,
But,
I've stepped over every land mine,
Inside my mind,
I've got anger at the register,
My soul deep rooted to the Earth,
You keep cutting my roots,
Removing me,
From my home territory,
I've got anger at the register,
These lights in this store I work at,
Are hurting my soul,
Dig into me,
Toxicity,
I've got anger at the register,
I've got anger at the register,
Anger,
And most wonder why the working poor are so mad.

Poem: Heart Open, Heart Closed

I am working on my heart these days. It is as if I am bringing together the parts, transmuting energy in my soul and body and going to the next level in life. Read on.

What encompasses the Southeastern Michigan (Detroit) region is patriarchy. I have been becoming more clear with this oppressive energy of this place and region. I currently reside and work in this region. I know what I can do with this energy as a medicine woman. I may not be here to heal it or free up any energy. I may be here to just be in my power no matter what. To be in my Goddess power and not stumble over the thick and stale energy of age old patriarchy. I have experienced more sexism in this region that in any other place I have lived. You can feel it in the air.

As a healer and reader I can see that the pictures that the majority of people have created in this region are male based. What I mean by pictures is basically consciousness. It is a collective of choices, decisions and declarations that the majority of those residing in this region have chosen. They have chosen patriarchy, abuse, control and linear thinking. There is a lot set up here that has not been taken down by the consciousness of the people that have resided here. The energy of this region is ages old and are directly connected to some European energies like kingdom and fiefdom energies from the Middle Ages. If a pattern does not clear it repeats until there is healing and the lesson is complete. This region is far from this and I can tell you that as a reader and healer it is not changing anytime soon. Most people who are choosing more matriarchal, creative and balanced pictures leave the region. If the town or city has a bit more matriarchal energy than Detroit (and its suburbs) then people will flee if they can. This may mean that they go to Denver, Colorado or Missoula, Montana. People leave because the pictures are lest constrictive and confining. They go because their heart and spirit can breathe.

I am probably writing this because I was just in Colorado for work last week. I felt a huge difference in the cities and regions. It made me take a look at Michigan's and Detroit's energy in a different, ehem, light. Denver was more vibrant and I saw a lot of confident women in their business suites downtown. Boulder is very bright and it was like some sort of soul homecoming for me because I used to live there. My spirit opens up in Boulder with the blend of the front range of Colorado where the wide open spaces of the plains and the mountains interweave. When I got back to Detroit I could feel the sharp and harsh energy of this region. It is like the energy here is flat-lined and dead. It is sad that the patriarchal energies made it this way.

We need both energies to make a place whole. We need linear and creative thinking to create a new world. We need power in a healthy way to create a new world. We need healing from both patriarchal energies and matriarchal energies. We don't need cut and dry energy that leaves our region dead. Michigan is a dire need of balance and wholeness. Its core is the least vibrant region in the United States. There are beautiful things taking place here but the pictures are still in place. The tale of the region will keep repeating itself until the people that commit to living here choose otherwise.

Writing this piece helps me come to peace with my current space in life and the soul declarations that brought me here. I came back to this region to understand a lot of the old patterns set up in my life and family. I am rewriting my tale mixing matriarchy and embracing the Goddess that I AM. Thank you for the lesson. Its time to move on and out eventually to a place where my soul and heart are aligned.

That's from the healer side of my life, my authentic self. What do you think, feel and see about the southeastern Michigan (Detroit) region?

Why I Love Michigan

My recent experiences can be shared with you via photographs.

I am in love with a particular part of Michigan I refer to as Sleeping Bear. I love the lore and the legend of Sleeping Bear. Where I go is quite a popular vacation spot yet still not as developed and populated as some popular vacation spots. In other words it is still very rural and still beautiful countryside. I hope it stays this way. I used to make fun of it when I was younger because I didn't think it was "up north." I thought up north was anything north of the Mackinaw Bridge. It just so happened that I feel in love with the place that I used to make fun of. Interesting, eh? I feel the most at home here in my body, mind and spirit. Also, because this is Anishinaabe territory I really feel at home. I am in love with the land!

On my recent travels on my vacation I realized that I have become less and less of a city person. I thought I was until my mid twenties. Then after graduate school this slowly changed. I know in my soul that I belong out on the land away from the big city. A part of me has craved the country my whole life. There was once a dirt road I used to take in my suburb when I walked to high school. I dreamed that the dirt road went to a lake and that I lived in a really cool small town somewhere. Now I am taking my daydreams from then and now and beautifully weaving the fine strands of intention and manifestation. My energy is being directed to living in a rural area in the very near future. It is no longer a secret of mine that I want to live on the land, farm, have a few horses and being surrounded by the forest and tall grasses. The energy is being directed towards my dreams and the plan is in the works. This is another reason that I have been moving away from activism so much. I feel a huge change in my life. I am experiencing quite a metamorphosis in my life right now and I am thankful.

Some of you fellow Michiganders may know where these photos were taken. The only thing constant in my life is change. Stagnation is a fear I have that is probably a past life fear that I need to overcome in this lifetime. Haha! Therefore, it can be said that this blog will change as I change. As you can see I have changed the looks of the blog and therefore the energy of it. I have also changed the name of the blog itself, but not the link which will stay the same. The name is Anishinaabekwe which means Anishinaabe (Ojibway) woman.

I will blog when I feel inclined to and take breaks when I feel I need to do so. I will still post news stories and information Aboriginal, First Nations, Indigenous and Native peoples. But, I am going to kick it up a notch with my writing and stories. I am a writer and a poet. Much of my writing is on shelves in small notebooks and binders. I have thousands of poems yet to be revealed. As well as stories ready to be written on this blog and into books.

I have noticed that I have more people following this blog. Right now I have 68 people following and that is a big deal. I know in many of you have mentioned that you like and enjoy reading my blog in previous posts that I have made. What I have gratefully taken from your comments is that my voice is important in the world. I know this but I often want to run and hide like a hermit to the forest and forget about life. So, I am here and I will write. I promise you I will write and I am sure you will enjoy my posts! For now I am here blogging, writing and being me!

Indigenist Intelligence Review: SPIRITUAL EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;
