Serious Issues

There's a lot of news in the world, and the reason everybody thinks it's the end of the world is because bad news sells better than good news! There is good news, and one of the good newses is that Diesel Sweeties might be in your local newspaper! Now I know what you're thinking -- what the hell is a newspaper? -- but I assure you they still exist and can be made marginally better.

If you're not familiar with The Gynostryker's modus operandi, you should click about six words back.

"Again with the global warming," you say! But you know what, global warming is serious. How serious? This serious.

There is a movie called Brick that you need to see because it's really good. Also there is a movie called Clerks 2 that you don't need to see. Watching Clerks 2 is like watching a 6-year-old girl who is dressed like a fairy princess throw up for two hours. She is throwing up on her favorite teddy bear, and you can't do anything about it.

Jim Inhofe is a Piece of Crap

Everyone in this particular Overcompensating comic has a good point and is right. So why argue? One thing that bothers me though is my former senator Jim Inhofe, who is the Chairman on the Committe on Environment and Public Works. He thinks global warming is a hoax. And even if it is a hoax, what possible reason could you have to be against cutting back on air pollution. For succinctness's sake, I won't go into his opinions about gay people; it's well-documented.

December 2nd is my brother Danny's birthday! He is five years younger than me. You should add him to your added him to your Myspace friends for his birthday, it would be funny if he suddenly had hundreds of friend requests. Earlier I went running down at the wilderness preserve! It was really great. Okay bye!

I don't know about where you live, but around here it seems like a lot of cars have way too many bumper stickers on them. It's like, back in Oklahoma, people had too many bumper stickers that were about Football and how the government is trying to take away their guns. But here in Massachusetts, there seems to be too many bumper stickers about how Bush is generally disagreeable and ones that encourage others to tolerate the lifestyles of Lesbian Wiccans. Also there are bumper stickers that are opposed to advertising, which kind of causes me to make a noise that is simultaneously a guffaw and a sob... a guffob if you will.

Also they're extremely distracting.

George Bush's mom is seriously fat. Can you imagine what she looks like naked? I just did. Do you believe a person with such a fat mother should be in charge of the free world? The answer is probably not.

Holy gosh, how did it get to be Thanksgiving already> For those who don't know, I am half-Cherokee and from rural Oklahoma and therefore consider Thanksgiving to be mostly insulting. I'm thankful for stuff everyday, I don't need a whitewashed version of The American Holocaust and a ritual sacrifice to remind me to be grateful. I'm grateful everytime I look in the mirror and realize I am basically symmetrical.

Today is the day when Wigu is back! What's happening there is what happened on the Monday before the original series started. It is me getting back to my roots, like how Christina Aguilera did that one album in Spanish. I hope you like it.

Both Wigu and Overcompensating are works in progress and we are adding new features all over the place. Soon there will be a forums and mailing lists and RSS feed for Wigu and Overcompensating.

I always wondered if the Biblical Apocalypse is supposed to just affect Earth or the entire Universe. The whole Revelations End Scenario seems to be extremely Earth-centric. It seems to me that if the entire universe were to come to a clean, theological end, then some photon-based, intelligent, peace-loving critter a million light-years away might be affected, and I don't know about you, but I don't want that at all!

The good news is, that old MTV show The State is being released on iTunes [youtube, nsfw]! I am very happy about this, as The State seriously comes up about once a week in my world.

We are so close to the new site going live, I can barely stand it. Just a few more hours.

When Jeffrey came busting into the office yesterday and announced that I would be doing book reviews for you guys, I said, "What? Why me? Why not have one of those screaming blondes who are always running around here do it?" He just cocked his head to one side and looked at me. "Oh... right," I said, "good point. Well what about you, then?" He scoffed, "I don't read comics. C'mon! Besides, you're always tryin' to tell people what to do. Now you can tell 'em what to read!"

You know if somebody had more leafy greens in his diet, somebody wouldn't be so surly all the time.

But I digress!

Today's review is of House Of Sugar by Rebecca Kraatz. House Of Sugar is a collection of strips that originally appeared in a Canadian newspaper, and also as a webcomic. I have to admit that prior to picking up this book, I was completely unfamiliar with Ms. Kraatz or her work. After reading the book, I like to think that she is the kind of lady who looks casually sexy in 1940's house dresses and has really shiny hair. We would hang out on white porch furniture, and have fresh lemonade and that war cake made with chocolate and mayonnaise, and play canasta.

House Of Sugar is beautiful and poignant, offering a glimpse into Rebecca's younger years and family histories coupled with a pure love for old Hollywood and an obvious longing for a time early last century when everyone just seemed classier. While most strips are just 'one shot' vignettes, there are a few storylines that run their course over a few strips. (My favorite example of this is "Mr. Desmond," a six part story of the oldest man she ever knew.) When read in one sitting, all of the stories of House Of Sugar mesh together into a heartfelt narrative. I really enjoyed reading it, and can easily see myself picking it up again.

In short, highly recommended! You can buy House Of Sugar for yourself here, and support both Rebecca Kraatz and the spirit of independent publishing!

This comic was ready to go up last night but Comcast wouldn't let us have inter nets at the Bunker. When the new Overcompensating systems get activated, I won't have to manually update anymore (I have to manually update and do all the links and all). I have had it with manually updating.

Adventures in Tequila Marketing

The day of the election I went to the liquor store and said "give me a pint of your finest tequila!" The guy pulled the bottle down off the shelf and said "thirty five dollars." I replied, "give me a pint of your second-finest tequila instead."

Much comicking this weekend, and moving next week into my own private spot in Northampton, with a sound-proof drawing room! I am becoming increasingly affected by outside forces in my rapidly advancing... maturity.

It looks like this is going to be our holiday lineup this year! You should be sure to order things before 30 November if you're planning on getting things for "the holidays." I'll also be offering affordable original comics to purchase soon. First we have to concentrate on the new OC website, which will have a whole new commenting system. If you're already registered at Goats it'll be the same login! Either way, it will be a sort of self-policing return of the Loch Ness Monster Adventure Club.

Readers of Sheldon should be advised of that comic's new URL - SheldonComics.com! We are neighbors now. This is a lot better than when Wigu was on the goatse server.

Since I stopped watching TV (or should I say stopped watching commercials on TV) I'm only getting second-hand info about political candidates' TV ads, and the impression I get is just embarrassing. I don't want to vote for anybody! I want to vote for robots, and I am fully aware of the consequences of this.

This weekend Phillip and I got the Wigu and When I Grow Up archives all overhauled, complete with series browsing! All this stuff will be under jjrowland.com from now on!

Over the next few days, Overcompensating is also moving to a new archiving system. Please be patient while we get everything figured out.
