John and his wife met Joe and I at Mad Mary's Steakhouse for supper. We listened to Joe talk about his trip so far. We talked a little about our own paddling and what he (Joe) can expect downstream. Sounds like Joe will be meeting Kelly and John at the causeway at 11 AM tomorrow. I believe that John is going to watch over Joe's boat, etc., while Kelly takes Joe out to the Black Hills. Joe should be back in Pierre Friday evening. I think he will be camping in Griffin Park Friday night. I think John and I are planning on paddling along with Joe for a bit as he departs Pierre.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Tg_6ucuyTZbA8VCWBGaHKw?authkey=Gv1sRgCK3y7ZulgJe1pQE&amp;feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SlVTzgwPCBI/AAAAAAAAYak/rN6X_ui-adI/s400/IMG_5202.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">Again, Joe's website/blog is <a href="http://www.paddlingforparkinsons.com">http://www.paddlingforparkinsons.com</a></center><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-7961466916487112432?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-42448451140240744032009-07-08T14:49:00.002-05:002009-07-08T16:06:49.541-05:00Big EnvelopeThe big envelope says, "Pat wins... @ engineering!" We went up and met with Joe Forrester, a med student from the U of Virginia, that is paddling from the Missouri River headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico. <a href="http://www.paddlingforparkinsons.com/pfp/index.aspx">Joe is paddling to raise money for Parkinsons disease</a>. John is going to help him portage the Oahe Dam tomorrow and it sounds like Joe is going to stick around the area until Saturday. I think some folks from the Black Hills Paddling Club are going to show him around the Hills Thursday and/or Friday. John and I are planning on paddling with him a bit as he departs on Saturday; I think some folks from the Black Hills are planning on doing the same.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-5598943577941266023?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-78925897852233668762009-07-01T12:49:00.002-05:002009-07-01T12:52:26.090-05:00Canoe Night as a precursor to Canada Day!Last night, the Boy Scout troop I volunteer with took the troop's canoes out to goof around on the water. There also were a couple of kayaks. my Carolina and another adult's boat. Not much to say. I talked Chuck into taking an excursion up the Bad River. And what a day to do it! We made it further up the river than I have ever been! We totaled 7.4 miles.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Qn5L9IPW2CZ9Zlnm3is7QQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7vD5N6KI/AAAAAAAAWyo/cA0xNjVKWGw/s400/map.jpg" /></a></center>We launched from the boat ramp at the mouth of the Bad River and Chuck was his usual late self.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/P9CJaEyLppxZKoWcO4_X8w?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7eIpXCYI/AAAAAAAAWwk/9s5LktEj3to/s400/IMG_5110.JPG" /></a></center>About a mile up the Bad River is a draw that has never before had enough water to paddle. Today was different. I couldn't very far up it, but I did make it around a bend.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/xDysV0IFrGpJWIE9FL-WJQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7gSPsrdI/AAAAAAAAWw0/VwtYPf05t5Q/s400/IMG_5112.JPG" /></a></center>After our endeavor up the draw, a rainstorm passed over us. Nothing to bad, just added some clean water to the Bad River.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/z5PojsUtEtiob0mdtuWb1Q?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7hTE0LiI/AAAAAAAAWw8/USI8C3jJKtM/s400/IMG_5113.JPG" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wI1RpCv-h9DmiuaB6rUX4w?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7iUI5RpI/AAAAAAAAWxE/yxIT1UxMke8/s400/IMG_5114.JPG" /></a></center>Don't mind the water spots, but here is a picture of where we had to turn around.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/dDiOSizAwzBFjwK8MWZjaQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7nMcuT4I/AAAAAAAAWxk/GUU0HX28pqU/s400/IMG_5118.JPG" /></a></center>And nearing the mouth of the Bad River. It was a bit windy, so I continued around the island and played in the big waves some as I paddled downstream. Nothing to special. I wish I could take pictures while I was playing in the waves; maybe someday I will have someone stand on shore and photograph the fun.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-jzIrrPd5J4JHkJNMDFvtg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7c2z108I/AAAAAAAAWwY/OP2F161UJLE/s400/map.jpg" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-jzIrrPd5J4JHkJNMDFvtg?feat=embedwebsite"></a></center>I managed to shave a bit off the distance somehow... 5.7 miles.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/odKTWwEs6rOAKPJ_dSn8RA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Ska7bguo7_I/AAAAAAAAWwI/lZtBQZwjuKY/s400/IMG_5108.JPG" /></a></center><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-6989193642691812688?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-22253932290246422752009-06-21T21:15:00.002-05:002009-06-21T21:41:45.887-05:00Another La Framboise Circumnavigation<center style="text-align: left;">Between the Oahe Days 5k, yesterday's paddle, and two nights enjoying live bands, I was sore and tired today. This afternoon, when the sky began to clear off, I wanted to go out for a paddle. I decided to stretch out on my couch and watch a little TV first. The next thing I know it was after 5:00! I still went out and had an enjoyable cruise around La Framboise Island. The river was active with other boaters, but not too crowded.</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-yMk8j7Dy2lMfwWzoZeTOA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sj7oRAyh2jI/AAAAAAAAU6g/WNk9RAxyQg0/s400/map.jpg" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">My gps read 5.8 miles for the trip length. The temperature was around 80 degrees and the wind from the E-SE at 12 mph. I didn't take too many pictures today. I kind of liked how this one turned out. Nothing spectacular, but something to show that my boat was on the water.</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-yMk8j7Dy2lMfwWzoZeTOA?feat=embedwebsite"></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/DLIvsoKPXkZDVH7HOCMIqA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sj7oPtZG8pI/AAAAAAAAU6Q/YniTq0I2C24/s400/IMG_5101.JPG" /></a></center><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-2225393229024642275?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-56819670350464958742009-06-20T18:59:00.004-05:002009-06-20T23:59:26.520-05:00Pierre SDCA CruiseThe turn out for the first SDCA event in Pierre was low, but the fun and enjoyment factors were enormous. Just one soul, Ryan S., came up from the south eastern part of the state. We also had another Pierre paddler meet us at the put-in, Dave P. Btw, Dave paddles a skin of frame boat he built with Rick Johns.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MXLNfs5WhBJUtJcepmQszA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sj135E-Ql5I/AAAAAAAAUrE/7Ok_zZTAalU/s400/IMG_5069.JPG" /></a></center>As we paddled downstream and began to get close to the edge of Pierre city limits, we saw what looked like a giant beach ball approaching us. It turns out that Chuck used his pop up sail to meet us on our way down. He departed once we got down to the causeway. Though he did help his shuttle vehicles at the end too.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Nk0RXSDAx2U7bER1b8_oNA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sj14CiN6RTI/AAAAAAAAUsY/Ho0QN4ART1A/s400/IMG_5077.JPG" /></a></center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Nk0RXSDAx2U7bER1b8_oNA?feat=embedwebsite"></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/H7atB748SVJEn64s4nAHxg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sj14D15cdrI/AAAAAAAAUsg/NO6Sq3a9jKw/s400/IMG_5078.JPG" /></a></center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/H7atB748SVJEn64s4nAHxg?feat=embedwebsite"></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/qpgSO-Jiju483Uc4EFBuUg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sj14E1RQYCI/AAAAAAAAUso/GP5S4_K7P50/s400/IMG_5079.JPG" /></a></center><div>The temperature was in the mid 80s, but we had a SE wind ranging from 14-20 mph with gusts in the mid 20s (NOAA). The wind provided us a bit of fun coming around La Framboise. Our bows were crashing into the waves and I know at least two of the subsequent splashes came over my head! Ryan said something to the extent that this portion of the cruise was enough to make his whole trip worth it!</div><div>For a reprieve from the wind, we took the channel alongside La Framboise Island. Part of the island trail system is blocked off to try to keep a pair of eagles from abandoning their nest. The temperature was in the low to mid 80s, the wind was essentially nonexistant, and the humidity was below 40%. Obviously, I had to get out on the river. I put in from the causeway. I noticed that quite a few people fishing from the riprap and the dock today. Also, the dam must have been releasing water, because most of shore of Discovery island (near the causeway boat ramp) was submerged.<div>I chose to head upstream and it was tough paddling against the release from the dam. I struggled to keep at 3 mph. With the water high, I took a short detour to check out Whiskey Gulch. What little there is of it anyway. I paddled to the island upstream of the bridges. On my way back downstream, I noticed that the sandbar upstream of the bridges is completely submerged with at least a foot of water. It was a beautiful afternoon, low winds and a high in the low to mid 80s. I put in at the upstream boat ramp near the polo fields and paddled around the island, back past the beaches and campground. I took out on a beach behind some campsites and walked the quarter mile or so back to the launch point to fetch my pickup. The trip totaled 6.5 miles.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/H7-4JdIoW7_PJfszf0qvvA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SjROoaAOj4I/AAAAAAAAUgo/RUuUVMmunR4/s400/map.jpg" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">There was one other kayak on the water, a tandem, and a paddle boat. Nothing too eventful. I took a slight;y different path. I stayed outside the little channel until just before the dike. The distance was a little shorter today, 5.7 miles. Probably due to a more direct path. A few decent scenery pictures, one pelican, a couple shots of the dike, and a couple of the river traffic. The river traffic is starting to pickup, low June temps have made it later this year than in the past.<center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&amp;captions=1&amp;noautoplay=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feat=flashalbum&amp;RGB=0x000000&amp;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2FPat.Wellner%2Falbumid%2F5346831772418507393%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center><div><a href="http://www.piratesofthemissouri.com/2009/05/june-20_29.html">Just a reminder: SDCA event in Pierre next Saturday, June 20th.</a></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-6201936218295337559?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-29857203043129359612009-06-12T12:30:00.003-05:002009-06-12T12:41:02.738-05:00Next SDCA Event: June 20<center style="text-align: left;"><center style="text-align: left;">Current plan for the SDCA June 20 event in Pierre:<br /></center></center><center><iframe width="400" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=106115280086677163477.00046aad16b9e0ad888d5&amp;ll=44.377858,-100.317535&amp;spn=0.171771,0.274658&amp;z=11&amp;output=embed"></iframe><br /></center><center><div style="text-align: center;"><small>View <a href="http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=106115280086677163477.00046aad16b9e0ad888d5&amp;ll=44.377858,-100.317535&amp;spn=0.171771,0.274658&amp;z=11&amp;source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">June 20</a> in a larger map</small></div><div style="text-align: left;">Launch from near the dam and cruise south to Farm Island. The cruise could be modified in route to include a jaunt up the Bad River and/or through the chute/channel alongside La Framboise Island. The route is 10.5 miles to the first Farm Island boat ramp. An option could be to continue another 6 miles around Farm Island, past the 2nd boat ramp, and take out along a sandy beach only a quarter mile walk from the first boat ramp. Depending on the turnout, we can adjust this plan or even go up onto Oahe instead.</div><div style="text-align: left;">Note that the take-out is at Farm Island State Rec. Also, <a href="http://ci.pierre.sd.us/parks/campgrounds.shtm">Griffin Park in Pierre</a> offers free tent camping and has some camper hookups for $15/night. As for motels, there are quite a few in town. I have no idea which have the best deals. Another note, the same weekend is <a href="http://www.oahedays.com/viewschedule.htm">Oahe Days</a> in Pierre. There will be a free concerts Friday and Saturday nights. Judd Hoos on Friday and Black Water Band on Saturday. Also, Steamboat will be having free kayak rentals on Saturday and Sunday.</div><div style="text-align: left;">I am going to suggest a meet up time at 12:00 PM. From the forecast, we thought there would be a window of opportunity. We had initially wanted to try to also go from Clay Co. Rec. Area to Mulberry Bend to fill the hole from our trip last October. But we decided to not risk the "window" any further. Also, I had a friend come up from Lincoln, NE to paddle with us. I borrowed a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">WS</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Pamlico</span> 14 from another friend for him to use.<br /><center><iframe width="300" height="300" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;t=h&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=106115280086677163477.00046bcaf35bb7897140c&amp;ll=42.72583,-96.867142&amp;spn=0.151325,0.205994&amp;z=11&amp;output=embed"></iframe><br /><small>View <a href="http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;t=h&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=106115280086677163477.00046bcaf35bb7897140c&amp;ll=42.72583,-96.867142&amp;spn=0.151325,0.205994&amp;z=11&amp;source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">MR Mulberry to Bolton</a> in a larger map</small></center>We began by meeting at the take out, Bolton's Bend. The rain had made it a muddy mess. I could feel it pulling my pickup as I drove through it. Also, there is not much space for taking out or shuttle vehicles. Maybe postponing was a good idea if over 100 paddlers were expected. At the take out, we loaded all three boats onto  my pickup and left John's Tracker behind.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/kxU6AvFJOcXN15SQr8omFw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixQ9LPN-nI/AAAAAAAAT3U/hD3E7GNlZ4M/s400/IMG_4884.JPG" /></a></center>The gravel road that leads to Bolton's Bend was in worse shape than the above location. The drive to Mulberry Bend is 20 miles; nearly twice the length of the river cruise (11.3 miles)! The one thing that stood out about Mulberry Bend was the length of the boat ramp. I am not sure how long it is but the river could be quite a bit higher and not submerge the access area.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Ep6a8FUPlcbnVE5Us50rKA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixRWTVDmHI/AAAAAAAAT30/g7vMLi187fU/s400/IMG_4886.JPG" /></a></center>And we were on our way.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6iOpJ43SbYrGNzV53veV5A?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixSUOVMXEI/AAAAAAAAT4s/xxcEqSgMPtA/s400/IMG_4893.JPG" /></a></center>The temperature was in the mid 50s. It got breezy for a bit, but was mostly calm during the cruise. I think we had a few sprinkles initially, but didn't see any rain after that. Between the early wind and mist and the overcast sky, my early pictures turned out a little <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">blurry</span>. Not too much exciting to report from the early portion of the trip anyways.<div>I found two significant places to specifically mention. First of all, we passed the mouth of the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Vermillion</span> River. Someone has a house right at the mouth and I couldn't help but imagine the benefits to it.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/T6eXl4_T9hyJymQDtE7xyA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixXvEHFsXI/AAAAAAAAT-Y/4fhFLBQVt8A/s400/IMG_4927.JPG" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wsQmO0aogE7e1iEQeS9Wzg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixXnBwN2iI/AAAAAAAAT-Q/frE1Y7T5pb8/s400/IMG_4926.JPG" /></a></center></div>Not long after passing the mouth of the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Vermillion</span> we began to approach a wooded island. I have not found a name for the island though.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wu7YD0OLMAghipMfsYUKdw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixYBtFq2EI/AAAAAAAAT-0/cgE2LKKXEMI/s400/IMG_4930.JPG" /></a></center>As we approached the island, my friend, Arne, and John took the north side and I took the south end. I feel like I chose the correct side; I made a cool discovery. As I paddled along, I noticed smoke coming from the island. I thought to myself, crap, there is a fire. I wondered if I should try to call out on my vhf radio or cell phone. I kept paddling, trying to keep an eye out for the source of the smoke. Eventually, I came to a couple of guys and three kids camping on the island. They had camped on Goat Island the night before and chose their current camp site because of a structure, some sort of fishing lodge maybe, that might provide shelter if Friday night's storm got too bad. They were a friendly bunch; we <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">BSed</span> a bit and they even offered me a cup of coffee. But I had to go and catch up with Arne and John, so I dispensed Pirates of the Missouri stickers to all of them and headed downstream.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/oYKyW4g1SAVkypQV632-EQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixY2cYcOeI/AAAAAAAAT_k/GMR4bZCh_Iw/s400/IMG_4934.JPG" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/x22aUb9L_-oAmK0an0cm3g?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixZF7153pI/AAAAAAAAT_s/wQx1BjYfsDA/s400/IMG_4935.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">Taking it easy...</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/43Zbv-NVTMcfEJLIj5kLWA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sixci0lRtJI/AAAAAAAAUDM/jxPqcFJK3iU/s400/IMG_4958.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">Nice view.</center><center><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixcrK7w4HI/AAAAAAAAUDk/o9tfIhfm-Us/s400/IMG_4959.JPG" /></center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/h-ty-Yl9SHdSP6mF-MIczA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixdQu7m2pI/AAAAAAAAUEc/k02yZmuxEBo/s400/IMG_4966.JPG" /></a></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sb6xAnwa3K3AauGZEOv8lg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixfJTghJyI/AAAAAAAAUHI/K_IxaHoBsTs/s400/IMG_4983.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">We doing alright!</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HiZ8Ggsl3zf0Yi1mxdKzlA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sixgh_8qjLI/AAAAAAAAUIs/WNRR4c7YHoQ/s400/IMG_4993.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">Whew, finishing up... what a day!</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/kmo-Jj1sGXCID4rKtmzSYg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixhTKZEA-I/AAAAAAAAUJc/FU2Vy-eQ_l0/s400/IMG_4999.JPG" /></a></center>And time to head back to Mulberry Bend...<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wRHv448LMVNNXPWKEFNKdA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sixi0IbFNDI/AAAAAAAAULA/iH0H_B5riic/s400/IMG_5007.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;"><br /></center><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&amp;captions=1&amp;noautoplay=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feat=flashalbum&amp;RGB=0x000000&amp;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2FPat.Wellner%2Falbumid%2F5344734856616495953%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center><center style="text-align: left;">The next <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">SDCA</span> event will be in Pierre on June 20. I then had scramble down a somewhat steep bank, dragging the boat behind me.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ww_yltd7Jb2rRPB6QCjgQA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixMC_2GVDI/AAAAAAAAT0c/mu6ClcaEZBE/s400/IMG_4867.JPG" /></a></center>I did get some good shots while I was down on the creek though.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/K_BzfahkmgE-DhwaT-y88A?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixMeZmCRVI/AAAAAAAAT0w/SUExeA2vBnQ/s400/IMG_4869.JPG" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/tqGpYmxhJrhhlbRAodGutQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixNku7N1CI/AAAAAAAAT14/Jvy95dIpFfk/s400/IMG_4876.JPG" /></a></center>And the point where I turned around...<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/h3hbjdFqKOLHeqNh3_yaFQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixNuSn8vqI/AAAAAAAAT2A/wKePo2XTEXk/s400/IMG_4877.JPG" /></a></center>On may back, on one of the ripples, I had to get out and walk my boat upstream. In doing so, I noticed a strange rock. It seemed to have legs and a tail! Here is a picture of the mystifying Brule Creek turtle:<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/nUnMeEFC25rZIIJPirEF2Q?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SixOIYNhQSI/AAAAAAAAT2Q/U3Mp4R0ptTA/s400/IMG_4879.JPG" /></a></center>The trip only totaled 1.5 miles. Riding downstream was lots of fun, but it was a struggle to get upstream. Low water was the factor. If the water was much higher, it may have been more difficult to launch a boat in the creek though. This trip could be better by finding another point to access the creek and shuttling a vehicle.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-6496670203781598196?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-25875264756106494452009-05-31T16:03:00.003-05:002009-05-31T16:19:17.171-05:00Dissecting Farm IslandWell, today I paddled up all four channels into the interior of Farm Island. It was a nice afternoon, but a little warm and breezy. Temperature was in the upper 80s and the wind was about 12 mph. I had something to photograph in the first second of my paddle too. A car jumpstarting a boat!<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/gHK985alVJe-zBcVb0FaOg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SiLwldkEe4I/AAAAAAAATo4/vxGEw3ID9Bo/s400/IMG_4854.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">All it takes to jumpstart my boat is some water or coffee if it is in the morning! It's hard to see, but there is a good-looking, bikini-clad gal behind the car too.</center><center style="text-align: left;">The trip ended up covering 6.8 miles.  </center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hCaMHIO68l-YMfCs5bSahQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SiLwi627n_I/AAAAAAAATow/JPf_KQJ1rTs/s400/map.jpg" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">Almost immediatley as I began to enter the channels, I came across a bunch of pelicans sitting atop a partially submerged log.</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/uXsdWVw1iuflSyRn7qehCw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SiLwqW2SiEI/AAAAAAAATpQ/-EfnsuvFms0/s400/IMG_4857.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">I also came across the remains of a building that I do not recall seeing before. I assume that I have because I am certain I have been down all the channels in the past though.</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/kE_jtSL-0hXOQVkuJ8KSBg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SiLw5okfuWI/AAAAAAAATqk/QhjPLMHX6p8/s400/IMG_4865.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">And then there is the remains of the building I don't forget.</center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ESV-FWNQkKb4u4krUH34oA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SiLw76AwHtI/AAAAAAAATqw/OfLVGFssvf8/s400/IMG_4866.JPG" /></a></center><center style="text-align: left;">The motorboat and personal watercraft traffic is picking up for the summer. We met at the East Shore boat ramp, loaded my boat and gear onto John's Tracker and headed for Peoria Flats. Until recently, the Peoria Flats has been high and dry. The recently submerged trees reminded us of the movie <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">Deliverance</span>.<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_30?feat=embedwebsite#5341762932566201314"></a><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_30?feat=embedwebsite#5341762932566201314"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SiHBFdX1E-I/AAAAAAAATho/kzbIxd0ChQQ/s400/IMG_4833.JPG" /></a><br /></div><center style="text-align: left;">We ended up paddling 5.5 miles from Peoria Flats to East Shore. But between me not getting to the causeway until about 6 PM and a <a href="http://www.doubletongued.org/index.php/dictionary/popcorn_storm/">popcorn storm</a> blowing through, I chose to just dink around in the river. I didn't even completely miss out on the storm; despite all the clouds being over town not the river, I still got pelted by heavy rain for something like 30 seconds. I did manage a couple of pics of a rainbow and some nice pics of "butter like water", wake boarding term for what I call glass like water. I ended up with just 3 miles.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_28?feat=embedwebsite#5341201338965105490"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sh_CUaLbG1I/AAAAAAAATdo/_2-bVe5fXqI/s400/stitched.jpg" /></a></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ykuF5BHsWWZ67TRI6GTB1Q?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sh-_tGOKgzI/AAAAAAAATcc/pLfcF8sm4mk/s400/IMG_4824.JPG" /></a></center><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&amp;captions=1&amp;noautoplay=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feat=flashalbum&amp;RGB=0x000000&amp;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2FPat.Wellner%2Falbumid%2F5341198204972586577%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-1089170081643526528?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-55727504826488873952009-05-27T22:14:00.005-05:002009-06-08T21:27:40.080-05:00Night PaddleAfter work I went for a run and then picked up a pizza at Papa Murphy's for supper. The plan was to eat and then go out for an evening paddle. Problem is I dosed off on my couch for 30 or 45 minutes. The next thing I know it is 8:00 PM. I started gathering up some paddling gear, figuring that I would at least drive down to the causeway before making a decision. Still being a little drowsy, I didn't get down to the causeway until 8:45 PM. I some how managed to convince myself to go out anyway.<div><br /><div>I put my beacon on the back of the boat and wore a headlamp on my hat; though I only used the beacon. I ended up paddling downstream from the causeway to the Bad River, looping upstream to the railroad bridge, and returning to the causeway. Distance covered was 3 miles. I always like how tranquil the water is at night. If I didn't go into work at 7 AM, I might have stayed out until it was darker. But I managed some decent pictures.</div><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/NxN8jghQIOTGIY1Wawr5RA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sh4BqVS4KhI/AAAAAAAATXw/q8Nx8j6kPzA/s400/IMG_4788.JPG" /></a></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Pca05Tu5pQStKyNnqkjG7g?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sh4BsfZ55tI/AAAAAAAATYI/5D2xYOqAZ48/s400/IMG_4792.JPG" /></a></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/7dkxgsWx_s-Kq1TZ6pJu8w?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sh4ByJhf5PI/AAAAAAAATY4/IGf4iSsHA5I/s400/IMG_4811.JPG" /></a></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3MCxHYIDOw4Vtvyjo883qw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Sh4BzEl713I/AAAAAAAATZA/J2LPICMfKJg/s400/IMG_4813.JPG" /></a></center></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-5572750482648887395?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-27293098777057428162009-05-25T19:53:00.007-05:002009-06-08T21:27:27.044-05:00A full crew!It wasn't a beautiful afternoon, but it proved acceptable. Chuck, John, and I met at the causeway at 2 PM. We began paddling upstream against the wind and the current. It was tough going. When we stopped paddling, we would lose ground! After about 40 minutes, Chuck turned back so that he could meet up with his daughter. John and I pushed on to a small island. It took us an hour to reach the island and only half an hour to get back. We ended up covering 4.5 miles.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_l8djBxZgIvu93VX_IFNMA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/ShseIeI9E8I/AAAAAAAATSw/OcsgBt-ZcG0/s400/map.jpg" /></a></center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/23Y6mpeaGmu00LMWNgi-4A?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Shsdv6QKFvI/AAAAAAAATRU/O_CYKZ-0UM8/s400/IMG_4775.JPG" /></a></center><center>Fighting the wind.</center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/qy07hRTNRUwNbMv79a2lkw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/ShsdyRdFRaI/AAAAAAAATRs/SXLqNUCF6yc/s400/IMG_4777.JPG" /></a></center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/5irN6T0OxGVKaxv9bha9Eg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/Shsd-ztBxSI/AAAAAAAATSU/8gJcDaAj-A0/s400/IMG_4782.JPG" /></a></center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/7NBOXr0OBGIOh_2u-qLuhQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/ShseHPXqPSI/AAAAAAAATSo/9kx20U9uJjc/s400/IMG_4784.JPG" /></a></center><center>What? Eventually we should bump into each other.<br /></center><center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/PEGuAdpMRBHrJjTTCV9dNw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/ShrfmSSu8qI/AAAAAAAATPU/Cw878T3Xkek/s144/FINAL.JPG" /></a><br /></center><center><br /></center><center>A slideshow of all the pictures I took.</center><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&amp;captions=1&amp;noautoplay=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feat=flashalbum&amp;RGB=0x000000&amp;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2FPat.Wellner%2Falbumid%2F5339158170920850385%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-3911520581562181642?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-76773452756354898062009-05-23T17:57:00.005-05:002009-06-08T21:26:31.514-05:00Splitrock Creek and Devil's GulchOn Friday, I drove down to Garretson to camp at the Splitrock City Park. I did this so that I could join other SDCA members on an early morning Skunk Creek cruise. While I was there I decided to paddle around in Splitrock Creek and Devil's Gulch. Not too much to report. I did about 2.5 miles.<center><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iwg03zRoTmH4FH1_x-2KQg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/ShiGEBLDwBI/AAAAAAAATIU/tJQAHpi5BSU/s400/map.jpg" /></a></center><center><br /></center><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&amp;captions=1&amp;noautoplay=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feat=flashalbum&amp;RGB=0x000000&amp;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2FPat.Wellner%2Falbumid%2F5339155397467235777%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center><center style="text-align: left;">One negative about my night here: The some of the graduating class from the local high school also used the park for a party. It hit 90 degrees so I decided to go for a paddle after work. When I arrived at the causeway I wasn't sure what direction I would head until I saw that the water level was up. I quickly decided to circumnavigate La Framboise Island. As I was preparing to launch, a pair of jetskis sped by the boat ramp... I guess I have to start watching out for them again.<div>I may have seen more wildlife on this La Framboise Island circumnavigation than any other. Started with three turtles sunbathing, a buzzard flew low from the sandbar over to the main island, and finally I saw three or so white tails run into the island. Though I didn't see any other part of the deer. I also failed to capture the buzzard or the deer with my camera. After coming around the island the boat traffic picked up. There were even two boats pulling wakeboarders. It must be summer! The trip ended up being 5.7 miles.</div><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&amp;captions=1&amp;noautoplay=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feat=flashalbum&amp;RGB=0x000000&amp;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2FPat.Wellner%2Falbumid%2F5337346086173935729%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-9210586474005297615?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8385865722275635429.post-79752660136752389722009-05-13T06:08:00.003-05:002009-05-13T06:22:04.505-05:00An Evening At Farm Island...Yesterday evening John and I decided to go out for a paddle. Because of the possibility of storms and the wind picking up, we chose to paddle alongside the Pierre side of Farm Island. That way we had some where to come ashore if the weather got bad too soon. We ended up covering 5.7 miles. The wind picked and switched direction on our way back from the tip of Farm Island; we could  also see lightening in the distance, but we only had a few sprinkles fall on us. And we were off the water soon after.<center><table style="width:auto;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/p9-ACISyUxEtOjop9iuWhQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SgqoKWfhoOI/AAAAAAAAS0A/zEriVmZ0rB0/s400/map.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_12?feat=embedwebsite">2009_05_12</a></td></tr></tbody></table></center><center><table style="width:auto;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MMb613BAZuI9RyxLsJeapg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SgqoBzNyWJI/AAAAAAAASzg/dOvgKJMxodY/s400/IMG_4675.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_12?feat=embedwebsite">2009_05_12</a></td></tr></tbody></table></center><center><table style="width:auto;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_12?feat=embedwebsite#5335261514239804578"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SgqoFGwThKI/AAAAAAAASzo/98CEqMppGpQ/s400/IMG_4676.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_12?feat=embedwebsite">2009_05_12</a></td></tr></tbody></table>John letting his wife know we are heading back.</center><center><table style="width:auto;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/YyhWsq6FJz1ZtHyeGUtw0Q?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fMlGzFpYFtk/SgqoG5GKQCI/AAAAAAAASzw/qI_TcSNrnqc/s400/IMG_4677.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Pat.Wellner/2009_05_12?feat=embedwebsite">2009_05_12</a></td></tr></tbody></table>Pretty cool looking...</center><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8385865722275635429-7975266013675238972?l=www.piratesofthemissouri.com'/></div>Pat Wellnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12692886494512207207Captain@piratesofthemissouri.com0
