Here are a few rough shots and rough facts from the Crescent Train Route from Charlottesville to DC.

What a difference a day makes! The Crescent Train leaves Charlottesville at about 7:20am for NYC. This has been my main route over the last few years, along with the Palmetto to Charleston, SC. The Crescent Train travels everyday with endpoints at New Orleans and New York City! It travels through more states than any other Amtrak train...I was a little shocked by this fact but the Empire Builder travels west which is home to larger states. The Empire Builder was my first multi-day trip on a train, I love the train but decided to fly home.

I am developing characters from people who have crossed the paths of my life, I capture them in camera. Random people from the streets are acquiring names of people from my classes, family, friends, TV shows, etc. I call these people "My Peeps"(respect to my brother). My peeps and I are embarking on an adventure. We don't know exactly our direction but we are excited and encourage you to follow our discoveries.

WTP : Phase I

We the People : Phase I

Phase I is a work on paper project layering digital technology and the intaglio printmaking process created by the Sintra Plate. Photographic images are digital capture and print. The outline figures are of people walking 14th street in Washington DC.

I am happy with the Phase I experiment, I see potential. Phase II is in the works.

St. Thomas Circle

My first trip out-of-town this year was with John to DC. We went to deliver art and attend a talk by Frank Goulke at the American Art Museum. For the first time I found the city exciting, I stood in front of the White House watching tourists take pictures with a smile on my face.

These are a couple room view shots. We stayed at the Donovan House on St. Thomas Circle.

I love to photograph from moving vehicles. As I travel down paths I've seen before I always find something new. This trip granted us a beautiful sky as we drove past DC. I enjoy the quite presence of humans in the landscape.

Every New Year's Day I take a few photographs. I enjoy the process as a reflective practice on my current state of mind. In the past it's been powerlines, TV sets, parties but this year I was simply looking for the beauty of light and natural elements.

Where would we be without light? Nature Culture Paper Contact: A collection of Sunprints teaches students how to gather resources from their environment and use the sun to create prints. Students will first learn to create light resistant pages through four to five techniques learning about different opacities plus positive and negative space. Second we will work with one of the first photographic processes, cyanotypes, to make prints from the light resistant pages. At the end of the day we will demonstrate the pamphlet bookbinding techniques to create a small art book.

***Sunprints are dependent on the sun; if it rains the workshop will adjust focusing on the light resistant pages as the content for the book. More time will be spent on the sequencing of imagery.

Audience: Middle School-High School, Adults
Enrollment: 10-15.

Materials: Transparency page, Magazines, wax/oil, scissors, paper, Frosted Mylar, crayon, sharpies, iron, wax paper, tape, thread, needles, bone folder, glue stick, trays, hair dryer

Digital Photography Syllabus
Instructor: Stacey Evans

Course Objective:
Discover a personal style by utilizing light, perspective, and composition. Learn beyond the camera automatic mode for best aperture and shutter speed in specific situations. Software programs, web sharing programs and printing options will be researched and discussed as a group. Students will create a portfolio on a subject of their choice. Peers and instructor will provide feedback in a critique to help achieve a successful sequence of images.

Supplies: Students must bring digital cameras, media cards, charged batteries and manuals are recommended. Printing is required using personal printer or commercial venue. Digital files must be brought to class for viewing, a flash drive, CD or online portfolio is required to store and view digital images. We cannot hook cameras directly to the computer equipment.
Additional Costs: Are individually based on printing and storage options.

Class I:
1. Introduction of peers and review camera types
2. Overview of daily class structure
a. Discuss Personal Vision and look at work prints (5-7)
b. Critique in class shots. (Bring in 3-5 photos in digital format)

4. Introduce Still Life and Light

1. Look at three portrait photographers
2. Review composition
3. Looking at focus plane and body language
5. In Class Shooting- We'll work with different pairs to provide several portrait experiences. Class determines location.

Class IV:
1. Critique final portfolio. (5-7 photos)
2. Review Discussion.
3. Team Software presentation.
4. Evaluation.

Personal Vision Project:

Finding a subject that interests you. It is important to develop a connection with what you photograph. Is it your family, friends, a stranger on the street, garden, architecture, street sign, or special object that makes you click the shutter? Each week you will photograph your chosen theme as homework. You are required to bring a set(5-7) of work prints to each class. You will photograph this idea several times over the next few weeks developing a personal style and experimenting with camera techniques. At the end of the course you will have 5-7 photographs printed or an online portfolio.

Let There be Light Research

While researching symbols of the Winter Solstice I came across this paragraph by David Pratt, Patterns in Nature, January 2006 mentioning humans selfish and shortsighted ends.

All monads, or units of consciousness, are said to progress through a series of kingdoms towards a state of relative perfection in the system of worlds in which they are then evolving, before passing, after a long rest, into other world systems, on other planes. Humans, in their present stage of rebellious selfconsciousness, often succumb to the temptation to misuse their free will for selfish and shortsighted ends, creating discord and suffering. But it lies within our power to attune ourselves to the fundamental harmony of our inner, spiritual selves – sparks of the universal ‘Self’ – and to become voluntary coworkers with nature in the great cosmic adventure of evolution.

This photo is of the Lofoten Islands in Norway. I used the pronto plate process to print it on paper for Frankenstein project at the VABC. The final print is completely different than what you see here. The pronto plate is a lithography process using xeorox techonolgoy to create plates. It's all new to me so I cannot explain it, YET.

Heart and Soul

Working on the Frankenstein collaboration "F" project at the Virginia Arts of the Book Center has pushed me to try a few new ideas. One idea was to resurrect my sewing machine to adhere a cut-out black heart of ash to pages. First I had to thread the needle properly, thanks to the internet I was able to find the manual. I read, read and read again the directions until I understood I must hold the excess thread between forefinger and thumb during the last step of this process. The hearts were not added due to the pressing of the book and the impression the edge of the heavyweight paper would create. Now I have 40 oiled black hearts of ash...what to do.

Printmaking

Digital photography sometimes challenges my upbeat personality. A special moment that was so magical and unique has been replaced with an overload of imagery created by myself and others . To step away from modern technology I became a member of the Virginia Arts of the Book Center. Every year the members collaborate on a group book project. This year the inspiration was Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I have contributed three pages.
The books will be auctioned Nov 14. at the VABC

I am working on a submission to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship. One of the hardest parts of photography is the editing. It is a subtractive process rather than additive. Not all images are winners and it's hard to let go of those special losers!

Floating Lanterns

John and I are working on a collaborative piece for the exhibit Let There Be Light at Piedmont Virginia Community College this December. The exhibit is one night only, December 12 from 6-9, celebrating the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. Rain date is Saturday Dec 13.

We are in the process of constructing floating lanterns out of bamboo. This image is our first prototype to see if the structure would float.
