Shot throughout the month of August 1990, the production used such familiar locations as Marywood College, The Woodlands and Market Street Square.

The plot, such as it is, centers around a college co-ed (Farrah Forke) and a police dectective discovering that her professor (a somnambulant Terry Londeree) is performing brainwashing experiments on students at the behest of some corporation. (The why of it all is never explained. I guess it’s just because they’re evil or something…) Of course, the brainwashing has slightly unforeseen side effects- turning the participants into killers.

The only recognizable name in the cast is Forke, making her film debut, but still a few years away from her career height as helicopter pilot Alex Lambert on the sitcom Wings. There are some locals who round out the cast and crew. The Woodlands proprietor Mitch Kornfeld appears as one of the brainwashed victim’s boyfriend. Even WVIA’s old late night monster movie series Uncle Ted’s Monstermania gets a mention.

Of course, being familiar with some of the locations used lends itself to a moment or two of unintended comedy. An early scene in the film has Detective Tun interviewing the boyfriend of a murdered co-ed at the restaurant at Wilkes-Barre’s Market Street Square (Left, click to enlarge) where he works. Unfortunately the waiter’s brainwashing kicks in and he throws himself out a window. Tun looks out the window, and we see the waiter’s broken body floors below. The only problem is that Market Street Square is on the ground floor!

But how is Brain Twisters as a movie? Not very good, unfortunately. As a horror/slasher film, it lacks the usual trappings of the genre. The gore is almost nonexistent and there is no sex or nudity to speak of. With the exception of exactly two four letter words, it is impossible to see how this was ever given an “R” rating. Jerry Sanguiliano’s direction is fairly lifeless and the movie plods along, never building any tension. The synth score is leftover 80s cheese. The acting is uniformly bland, even from Lee Strausburg Institute graduate Forke.

I can’t find any indication that Brain Twisters was picked up for theatrical distribution in the United States. It did however make it to theaters in Argentina, Germany, Iceland, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea and Yugoslavia. More than likely, the film went straight to video here in the states. I’m actually a bit surprised that it never wound up on Mystery Science Theater 3000, as several other movies from its releasing company, Crown International, have, including Wild Rebels, Sidehackers and the MST3K classic Catalina Caper.

It is currently available on DVD in the Drive-In Cult Classics, Volume 4 collection.

Rich Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04883386588727303782noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359128.post-40203598269661331022009-04-18T20:11:00.005-04:002009-04-18T20:40:09.455-04:00"Get Pumped!" at West Chester Film FestivalCommunity Film Project's 30-minute comedy, "Get Pumped!" recently was awarded 2nd Place at the Roslyn Film Festival. Gorgeous. Brunette. Athletic. Very intelligent. Strong willed. Independent. She has been obsessed with a school film project on missing children ever since her little sister Lacie disappeared two years ago. Sarah is highly intuitive yet she is unaware of her strength and therefore unable to correlate her visions to clairvoyance. She is content with her boyfriend Hale but has always felt like something is missing. She spends a lot of time with her best friend Richter, whom she grows more attached to every day as he helps her cope with the madness that surrounds her. She loves her family very much but when her younger sister disappears and her older sister kills herself, the family bond begins to deteriorate.

HALE -- 20 years old. Handsome, in a Yale or Harvard sort of way. Thin. Worldy but not fearless. Has been dating Sarah for two years. His father is very wealthy so Hale has always had everything he could want. He doesn’t work and spends most of his time traveling. He is intelligent but has an air of ignorance. He loves Sarah with all of his heart. Yet when the craziness begins, he sees no other choice but to get far away from her.

RICHTER -- 24 years old. Good looking. Charming. Honest and caring. He met Sarah in college. After sharing several classes together, he developed an interest in her but was aware and respectful of her relationship with Hale. He was lucky enough to get paired up with Sarah for the film project in Sociology class. He is happy to use this experience to get closer to her but is completely unaware of just how deeply involved he will become. He also sees Hale’s desertion as a chance to fill the role that Sarah so desperately needs right now.

JUDY -- 42 years old. Classy, blouse and pearls kind of woman. She has been married to Phil for 20 years. He is her third husband. She loves him, but the magic has been gone for ages. She promised herself that if she had children, she would never get a divorce. She goes through the motions of every day life just trying to hold the pieces together of what was once a perfect family.

PHIL -- 45 years old. Intelligent. White collar. Investment banker. Provides very well for his family. Even though things are crumbling, as long as his bills are paid and his family taken care of, he feels as if his job is done. He’s not the type of father that you can talk to anything about. He has always preferred a “don’t ask questions” approach from his children. He appears to be out of the loop but Sarah starts to believe that both he and Judy know more about what’s going on then they are letting on.

CHANTAL -- 26 years old. Once beautiful, her trauma has aged her dramatically. Brunette with hints of gray. She has been locked up in a mental institution for two years. Horrible nightmares and visions along with the disappearance of her little sister Lacie sent her over the edge. Once in Law School and an honor roll student, she became completely removed from reality when the world around her seemed to disintegrate. When Sarah shows up at the hospital to see if Chantal knows anything about her mysterious nightmares and visions, Chantal fears the worst and believes that there is truly only one way out.

AUNT BECKY -- 40 years old. Heavyset. Short hair, glasses. She is a preacher. A devout Catholic who runs a summer camp for children where she immerses them in religion. She truly believes what she teaches and feels as if it is her calling in life to enrich a new generation of children. She adores her family and has a special affection for Sarah.

MARK -- 36 years old. Married with two children. Sociology Professor. Sarah and Richter work on the documentary for his class. He is aware of the drive behind Sarah’s research but doesn’t let her know it. He holds a special place for her pain in his heart and is willing to go beyond his duties as an educator to give her the help that she needs.

For more information e-mail thecultmovie@gmail.com

www.myspace.com/thecultmovie

Jeffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02906430848420796753noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359128.post-18608873240786742522009-01-31T08:14:00.002-05:002009-01-31T08:21:47.514-05:00"FORGED" Press Conference"FORGED"

Looking to bring a little Hollywood to your weekend?

Head out to Breakers at Mohegan Sun on Saturday.

"Forged," an independent film shooting in Northeastern PA from February 2nd, through March 2nd will host a cocktail party, meet and greet with cast and filmmaker, and press conference.

The movie stars Manny Perez (Pride and Glory), Margo Martindale (Million Dollar Baby), David Castro (Where God Left His Shoes) and Kevin Breznahan (Superbad, There Will Be Blood).

Written and directed by William Wedig (Tryst, Rise of The Dead), produced by Josh Crook and Joe Van Wie.

Cocktail party and press conference Saturday, Janurary 31 at 3:30 p.m.

Breakers at Mohegan Sun

Film stars Manny Perez, Kevin Breznahan, and David Castro will be on hand.

There will be light hourdoerves, free soft drinks, and cash bar.

For all the up to date info on Forged, check out the movie's blog www.forgedmovie.blogspot.com

Jeffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02906430848420796753noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359128.post-33133274347385901712009-01-24T00:00:00.000-05:002009-01-24T00:01:24.954-05:00MAJOR MOVIE CASTING IN SCRANTON THIS WEEKEND!!!"FORGED"

The independent film that will start shooting in Northeastern Pa. Check out the following press release-

The Philadelphia Film Society (PFS), parent organization to the Philadelphia Film Festival, is pleased to announce an extended deadline and a further call for entries for the Philadelphia Film Festival’s Festival of Independents. The new deadline for submissions to this groundbreaking line-up is January 15th, 2009.

The Festival of Independents (FestIndies) is the Philadelphia Film Festival’s annual platform for promoting local filmmaking. Comprised of feature films, documentaries, shorts, experimental films and animation, the Festival of Independents showcases regional filmmakers and celebrates local talent. PFS hopes the deadline extension will allow unique creative talents the necessary time to apply for this prestigious
series.

"Festival of Independents is involved in world-premiering many features filmed in the tri-state region, as well as having recognized Philly talent before the international community," said Scott Johnson, FestIndies senior programmer. "We have been thrilled to host many filmmakers and entertainers.
