Die Office-Bibliothek und der Eee

Schlechte Nachrichten für alle, die auf dem Eee-PC (mit der mitgelieferten Linux Version) die aktuelle Office-Bibliothek Version 5 nutzen wollen. Wegen fehlender Abhängigkeiten scheint dies nicht ohne weiteres möglich zu sein. Probiert habe ich es sowohl mit der rpm- wie mit der deb-Datei und dem Hinzufügen etlicher zusätzlicher Quellen in der sources.list. Vermutlich würde es ab einem bestimmten Punkt klappen, wenn man immer mehr fremde Quellen übernimmt. Dies ist aber nicht empfehlenswert, weil dann auch die Qualität des Systems abnehmen könnte. Bislang ist mir kein Howto bekannt, wie sich die Office-Bibliothek 5 unter dem Linux des Eee-PCs installieren ließe.

Hier zwei Alternativen
1. Frühere Versionen der Office-Bibliothek funktionieren. Allerdings werden sie nicht länger zum Download angeboten. Man ist also auf die Version angewiesen, die man durch die gekaufte CD (oder den gekauften Download) besitzt. Diese Alternative hilft zudem nicht, wenn man einen Titel nutzen will, der bereits mit Version 5 geliefert wurde bzw. wenn ein e-Wörterbuch von Langenscheidt nutzen will, bei dem die Office-Bibliothek nicht mit beilag. Zudem sollte man bedenken, dass die Office-Bibliothek vor der Version 5 sehr unausgereift war. U.a. verschwendet die Version 4 wertvolle Bildschirmfläche durch die zu tief angeordnete Menüleiste (ein Extremfall schlampiger Programmierung).

2. Wenn man auf dem Eee-PC allerdings eine aktuelle Linux-Version installiert, sollte auch die Installation der Office-Bibliothek klappen. In meinem Fall habe ich Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon genommen (vgl. hier). Danach habe ich nicht die deb- sondern rpm-Datei installiert, weil mit der deb-Datei die Schrift in der Office-Bibliothek pixelig dargestellt wird. Folgende Schritte sind zur Installation erforderlich (sofern ich alles noch richtig im Kopf habe):

sudo apt-get install alien libgtk1.2
cd /Pfad/zur/officebib-5.0.1-1-suse.rpm
sudo alien officebib-5.0.1-1-suse.rpm
sudo dpkg -i officebib-5.0.1-1-suse.deb

Fertig.

Zur Bildschirmauflösung
Leider ist die Office-Bibliothek nicht besonders für die Auflösung von 800x600 geeignet, weil sie durch die Tab-Leiste und das rechte Kontext-Fenster unnötig Platz verschenkt. Ich habe auch weder in den offiziellen Einstellungen noch in der ini-Datei eine funktionierende Möglichkeit gefunden dies zu ändern. Dennoch - man sieht genug, um den Eee prima als mobiles Wörterbuch einsetzen zu können.

Here is a script to automatically trim the last seconds of several mp3 files in Linux for the following scenario:

In each file close to the end is a 1-2 sec break of silence and then about 7-12 secs of speaking. The silence and the speaking at the end should be removed.
The tags of the original file should be kept.
The shortened files shouldn't overwrite the existing ones but be saved to a new directory.

If the tags weren't necessary and the end of each file would have the exact same length a fine solution would be available here. Actually this was my starting point for the following solution.

For splitting the mp3-files at the desired point mp3splt seems to be the best tool in the Linux world. Unfortunately has two shortcomings:

No batch mode.
The current version 2.1 has problems with keeping the tags of the original file. The second shortcoming is gone with version 2.2_rc1 which is available as installation file for several distros.

Before starting the following shell-script you have to change to the directory where your mp3-files are stored. The modified files will be saved to a sub-folder called Shortened.

OK, here is the script

One still unsolved problem is that mp3splt doesn't support a recent ID3 standard. This can result in shortened tag information. Theoretically another problem could happen with a mp3 file which has a longer break of silence in the middle than at the end. In this case you could try to modify the parameters for mp3splt (man mp3splt). However, I tried my script with several pieces of japanese zen-flute music with breaks in the middle and all were trimmed fine.

UPDATE
I have used the script now for several hundred files and it worked with all of them. However, there is one album I once downloaded from Magnatune.com which for whatever reason resists to get circumcised. I played with several of mp3splts parameters - but no success. Hmm, I might decide to buy it... Otherwise I still could use Audacity...

Firefox 3 Beta1 and zooming - Part 2

Yesterday I wrote about the full-page-zooming feature of Firefox 3 Beta 1. While this is a great new feature text-only-zooming should still be possible for reasons I explained yesterday.

Today I found a way to use text-only-zooming with Firefox 3 Beta 1. It is even possible to combine page-zooming and text-zooming and let Firefox remember both settings combined.

In order to use text-only-zooming you have to install the Firefox extension NoSquint which let you zoom text-only and can save your text-zooming settings. It is also possible to zoom text on all webpages to a fixed zooming level. This works independently from the page-zooming settings and you can use both at once.

One problem with installing NoSquint is that it is not available for Firefox 3 yet. Fortunately you can install the version for Forefox 2 the way I described here.

Since this extension is not build for Firefox 3 there are some smaller problems. You can not use ctrl++ or ctrl+- for text zooming. Also the sidebar is not available. The only way for zooming is to use the settings menu.

Firefox 3 Beta1 and zooming

Here is another piece of experience with Beta 1 of Firefox 3:

One new feature is full page zooming. This new feature combines three aspects:

Not only text gets zoomed but design elements and pictures too.
Firefox remembers the zooming level for each page.
The traditional text-only zooming is no longer possible.

While I appreciate aspects 1 and 2 I think that the lake of text-only zooming is problematic. Picture zooming can result in ugly looking pictures. Especially at websites where picture quality matters but the text is too small for comfortable reading text-only zooming is needed.

What I would love to see is the option to choose between text-only and full-page zooming. In both possibilities the settings should be automatically saved. It also would be great if both options could be combined. For example I would like to use page-zooming up to the level where picture quality is still ok. Then I would like to zoom the text up to the point where the page design is still intact.

Another problem is that Firefox significantly slows down while zoomed pages are open (tested with Linux. This might vary depending on your operation system). I guess/hope this problem will be solved in the final version.

Firefox 3 Beta1 and extensions

I have just installed and tested Firefox 3 Beta1. Everything seems to work ok. However, I have only used it for about 30 minutes yet.

Here are some experiences regarding extensions:

Adblock Plus: Works out of the box. Great!
Greasemonkey: Not working. See below.
Mostly Crystal (Theme): You can find a version for Firefox 3 Beta 1 here.
Dictionaries (Polish, German and probably many more): Not working. See below.
Google Toolbar: Not working. Method below doesn't help. However, i don't really need it since Firefox's own search bar is good enough.

Here is what you can do to use extensions not ready for Firefox 3:

Download and unpack the xpi-file (actually it is a zip-file).
Open install.rdf.
Chance in the following line '2' to '3':

Repack everything.

For me this works well with Greasemonkey and the German and Polish dictionary file. But don't expect it do work with every extension. This might also unstabilize your Firefox.

UPDATE 21.11.2007
Since smooth scrolling still doesn't seem to work out of the box I tried to install SmoothWheel. This extension is already ready for Firefox 3 but is still not installable by default. The reason seems to be that Firefox 3 only accepts updates from secured web pages (https://...). To solve this problem another hack to install.rdf is necessary (as described below). Simply remove the URL in the following line:

GMail & Imap: serious show stopper for most people in the world / a solution for the 'all mail' problem (at least for users of KMail)

Here are some information regarding the new imap-feature of GMail/Googlemail I couldn't find anywhere else:

Imap has a serious show stopper for most people of the world. Many special characters (e.g. German 'Umlaute' or East European special characters) aren't shown correctly. I hope this bug will be fixed really soon. If you write or receive e-mails in non-English languages you might consider to wait until this is fixed.
One theoretically nice feature of GMail with imap is that you can use it to upload all your e-mails originally written on a external e-mail client (like Thunderbird). Unfortunately all uploaded e-mails get assigned to the date of the upload not of the original date of sending. Since the date of sending is an important information uploading of old messages doesn't make sense to me.
You can't unsubscribe from the folders on the server. This implies that you have to subscribe to the 'all mail' folder. This really slows everything down if you use disconnected imap (which means that all messages are stored also locally). As in the web interface 'all mail' contains all your ever send or received mails (as long as you don't delete them or report them as spam). This means that you have to download everything twice!
Fortunately there is an option for some e-mail clients to differentiate between imap-folders subscripted server-side and imap-folders subscripted local. This makes it possible simply to ignore the 'all mail' folder in your e-mail client while it still exists on the server.
Here are my settings for KMail 1.9.7 (don't use earlier versions if you want to unsubscribe 'all mail' locally!):
1. Go to the settings for incoming accounts and check the option "show only locally subscribed folders".
2. Click with your right mouse button at your [GMail] or [Google Mail] folder and choose "local subscriptions...". Uncheck here every folder you don't want to see. Additionally to the 'send all' folder I also unchecked the trash folder because I use the local trash folder anyway. This makes sense as long as you don't need your deleted mails on several locations.

Google solved the encoding problem. I still got seldom encoding errors but they aren't necessarily related to GMail.

Die Office-Bibliothek - Warum einfach, wenn es auch kompliziert geht?

Die Office-Bibliothek wird seit August 2007 in der Version 5.0 zum Download angeboten. Wie schon in der Version 4 wurde das Interface erneut überarbeitet. UND - zum ersten mal lässt sich mit der Software fehlerfrei arbeiten.

Drei Dinge sind allerdings zu beachten:

Out of the Box lassen sich durch eine neue Funktion (Bug oder Feature?) nur sehr umständlich Stichwörter öffnen. Der Versuch ein über die Stichwortsuche gefundenes Stichwort zu öffnen, führt in vielen Fällen nicht zum Ziel, sondern löst eine erneute Volltextsuche aus. Der erste Treffer dieser Volltextsuche wird anschließend automatisch geöffnet. In vielen Fällen handelt es sich nicht um das gemeinte Stichwort, so dass nun erneut in den Ergebnissen der Volltextsuche das eigentlich bereits zum Öffnen ausgewählte Stichwort ausgewählt werden muss. Dieses merkwürdige Verhalten lässt sich zum Glück abschalten, was allerdings viele unerfahrene Benutzer überfordern könnte. In der Konfigurationsdatei muss hierzu in der Zeile
DefaultOptions\ImplicitMaxIncremental=4
die 4 durch eine zweistellige Zahl (z.B. 40) ersetzt werden (vorher die Office-Bibliothek beenden). Bei 40 wird das merkwürdige Verhalten dann z.B. erst ab Wörtern mit 40 Buchstaben auftreten, ist also faktisch deaktiviert. Wird die Suche dagegen über den Lupenbutton gestartet, funktioniert die Volltextsuche weiterhin. Linuxbenutzer finden die Konfigurationsdatei unter /home/BENUTZER/.config/BDNM/office-bibliothek.ini.
Unter Windows hängt der Ort von der konkreten Windows-Version ab. Auf jeden Fall befindet sich die Datei 'office-bibliothek.ini' aber im Installationsverzeichnis und kann dort wie beschrieben angepasst werden.
Zum Download angeboten wird nur die Express Version. Hierbei handelt es sich um eine funktionsreduzierte Variante, die bislang nur für die CD-ROM-Beilagen der Duden/Brockhaus-Buchausgaben eingesetzt wurde. Wer auf die Version 5.0 updatet, verliert also u.U. zuvor bereits eingesetzte - und bezahlte! - Funktionen. Hierzu gehört das Anlegen von Notizen, die Arbeit mit Textmarkern und das Erstellen und Importieren von Benutzerwörterbüchern. Evtl. handelt es sich hierbei um ein Versehen - auch bei der Version 4 wurde zunächst nur die Express-Variante angeboten, was dann aber nachträglich korrigiert wurde.
Für Linux wird nur eine rpm-Datei angeboten. Auf den CD-ROMs wurde bislang aber auch das deb-Format für debian-basierte Distributionen sowie eine Installationsroutine für weitere Distributionen angeboten. Zumindest für debian-basierte Distributionen lässt sich die rpm-Datei glücklicherweise leicht ins deb-Format umwandeln. Hierzu muss auf der Konsole der folgende Befehl gestartet werden:
fakeroot alien /Pfad zur/officebib-5.0.0-4-suse.rpm

UPDATE 15.11.07

Mac-Nutzer finden eine Lösung zu Punkt 1 in den Kommentaren zu diesem Blogeintrag oder inzwischen auch in der Wikipedia.
Inzwischen wurde ein Update auf Version 5.0.1 nachgeschoben. Bislang konnte ich keine Unterschiede zur Version 5.0 feststellen. Die oben beschriebenen Punkte 1 und 2 gelten weiterhin. Zu Punkt 3 ist zu sagen, dass nun auch offiziell wieder ein deb-Paket angeboten wird. Mit diesem wird allerdings die Schrift pixelig dargestellt. Ich empfehle daher weiterhin, sich aus dem rpm-Paket wie beschrieben ein eigenes deb-Paket zu bauen.

VirtualBox 1.5 - kleiner Testbericht

Hier ein kleiner Testbericht der neuen Version 1.5 von VirtualBox. Leider muss ich vor der Installation dieses viel versprechenden Updates warnen.

Vorweg kurz zu meinem System
- Gastgeber: Kubuntu Feisty
- Gast: Windows XP
- KDE 3.5.6
- VirtualBox wurde über Apt installiert.

Hier einige sehr ärgerliche Fehler des Updates

1. Nach dem Update auf 1.5 ließ sich mein Windows XP nicht mehr starten. Es gab eine Fehlermeldung bezüglich der Windows-Images. Als Grund stellte sich heraus, dass ich unter 1.4 Windows zuletzt nicht vollständig heruntergefahren hatte sondern nur den Zustand der Machine gespeichert hatte (ähnlich wie Suspend2Disk). Nachdem ich ein Downgrade auf Version 1.4 gemacht hatte, konnte ich Windows erfolgreich 'aufwecken' und dann herunterfahren. Nach einem erneuten Update auf 1.5 funktionierte dann das Booten.

2. Wenn VirtualBox mit Gasterweiterungen für 1.5 läuft funktioniert Copy&Paste nicht mehr richtig. Nur das Kopieren von Windows nach Linux klappt. Wenn ich aber von einem Linuxprogramm zu einem Linuxprogramm (!!!) oder von einem Linuxprogramm nach Windows Text kopiere, wird er verstümmelt. Unter 1.4 klappte beides noch weitgehend problemlos.

3. Unter 1.5 ist es mir jetzt mehrmals passiert, dass ich nach einem Abspeichern des Maschinenzustandes nicht wieder zum gespeicherten Zustand zurückkehren konnte. Stattdessen bootete Windows komplett neu.

4. 'Gemeinsame Ordner' können nicht länger erreicht werden.

5. Eine Rückkehr zu 1.4 ist leider auch nicht ohne Weiteres möglich. Offenbar verändert 1.5 etwas an der Konfiguration, so dass 1.4 die Images nach einer Weile nicht mehr booten kann. Um das Problem zu umgehen habe ich in VirtualBox ein neues Maschine für Windows XP eingerichtet und dort dann die bestehenden Festplatten-Images integriert. Danach müssen noch die Gasterweiterungen für 1.4 neu installiert werden. Ob und wie die Gasterweiterungen für 1.5 wieder entfernt werden können, habe ich leider nicht herausgefunden. Der Zugriff auf die 'gemeinsamen Ordner' funktioniert auch nach dem Downgrade nicht mehr.

Zum neuen Seemless Mode
Wirklich nett ist der neue Seemless Mode. Zu viel darf man sich davon aber auch nicht versprechen. Der Effekt des Seemless Mode ist, dass nur noch die Windows-Taskleiste oberhalb der KDE-Taskleiste zu sehen ist, sowie die unter Windows geöffneten Fenster. Die Linux- und Windows-Fenster können nun nebeneinander benutzt werden. Eine Integration der Windows-Fenster in die KDE-Desktop-Umgebung findet aber nicht statt. Unter KDE erscheint als einziges "Windows"-Programm also weiterhin nur VirtualBox selbst. Wenn VirtualBox nicht im Vordergrund ist, ist auch die Windows-Taskleiste nicht (voll) zu sehen. Eine wirkliche Integration steht also weiterhin aus.

Fazit
Die Probleme die das Update mit sich bringt können für mich die Probleme nicht aufwiegen. Durch die nicht länger verfügbaren gemeinsamen Ordner ist mir ein auch nach dem Downgrade bleibender Schaden entstanden. Ich hoffe InnoTek schiebt schnell ein fehlerbereinigtes Update nach und prüft in Zukunft Updates gründlicher vor der Veröffentlichung.

level 1 wnc-0301 & Kubbuntu Edgy & wpa

Some days ago I bought a 'level 1 wnc-0301' pci wlan-card. Here a some instructions how to use this card in wpa-psk mode with Kubuntu 6.1 (Edgy) and KNetworkmanager. Installation can be painful since a lot of contradicting information regarding this card are online (so this is another contribution to this mess).

1. Chip
Some online sources claim that this card uses the Ralink 2500 chip. This might be right in some cases, but at least my card has a Ralink RT61 chip.

2. Problems with standard Kubuntu driver
The driver coming with Edgy doesn't work. The card gets identified correctly out of the box and network scanning is possible (e.g with wlassistant). Unfortunately connecting to networks (even open ones) doesn't work. Additionally KNetworkmanager thinks it is a wired card and as a result is not even offering a possibility to scan for networks. I tried to make a connection with the Ralink-cards related tool RutilT (Version 0.13) but without success.

3. Problems with fresh linux drivers
Fresh drivers (cvs- and beta-versions) are available from the rt2x00-project. After downloading I found the following warning message inside:

NOTE: This driver at this point in time is largely untested.
It basically consists of the base rt61 driver code released by Ralink with
a number of assorted fixes out of the rt2500 tree applied. More fixes need
to be brought over from the rt2500 tree before this driver can be considered
"beta-quality"

There are some positive but also many negative user experiences regarding this driver online. Because of this I took the decision to try to install the card with NDISWrapper first (which works fine with this card).

4. NDISWrapper
The version of NDISWrapper that comes with Kubuntu Edgy is buggy according to several sources online. Because of this I compiled and installed the latest version of NDISWrapper manually. The README and INSTALL files are easy understandable for experienced linux users.

Here are the basic steps I took:

4a. For unloading the buggy standard driver:
- sudo su
- modprobe -r rt61pci

4b. For installing NDISWrapper:
- Downloading of the newest version (version 1.39 in my case)
- Unpacking the file.
- apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev (and kernel-headers according to the installed kernel)
- Make
- sudo su
- make install

4c. Then I had to setup my card with NDISWrapper. For doing this, Windows-drivers are needed. The driver on the product CD-ROM doesn't work well with NDISWrapper. E.g. it seems to be impossible to connect to wpa-protected networks. On this page I found the information that the chip works well with a windows-driver-package available from Ralinktech (which is right).
I downloaded the package which unfortunately is a exe-file. Since I don't have a Windows-installation (and orange & cabextract failed) the next task was to get to the driver-files inside with the help of wine.

4d. The downloaded exe-file includes drivers for all versions of Windows. After executing drivers according to the running operating system get installed. NDISWrapper may need the drivers for Windows XP. Because of this I configured wine to tell the software that Windows XP is running. This can be done with the gui-tool 'winecfg'. Otherwise the driver for Windows 2000 would have been installed.
Then I started the exe-file with wine and said next/ok up to the point were the installation routine extracts all files (don't answer any messages after this point!). The the driver is now available at '~/.wine/drive_c/program files/RALINK/RT6x Wireless LAN Card/Installer/WINXP' or similar. Copy this folder to another place. Add to this folder also all files you can find at '~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers' (or similar) that end with '.bin'.

4e. In order to load the windows-driver, do the following:
- sudo su
- cd /path/to/windows-driver
- ndiswrapper -i rt61.inf
- ndiswrapper -m
- Add the following line to: '/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist':
blacklist rt61pci
- Add the following new line to '/etc/modules':
ndiswrapper
- depmod -a
- /etc/init.d/networking restart

5. KNetworkmanager
For using wpa it easiest to take KNetworkmanager. For this the following is needed:
- apt-get install wpasupplicant network-manager knetworkmanager
- Open '/etc/network/interfaces' as root. Comment out everything other than “lo” entries in that file.
- Create a file called '/etc/default/wpasupplicant' and add the following line:
ENABLED=0- touch /etc/default/wpasupplicant
- /etc/init.d/dbus restart

5a. You might find it annoying that KNetworkmanager ask for the kwalled-password every time it connects to an protected network. If you don't like this, just configure kwalled to use an empty password.

5b. KNetworkmanager might freeze after rebooting. If you configure kde to start with a fresh session after every reboot this problem disappears. In order to start KNetworkmanager after every reboot make an entry in '~/.kde/Autostart'.

UPDATE 28.04.07: Kubuntu 7.04 (Feisty)
Yesterday I upgraded to Kubuntu 7.04 (Feisty). My 'level 1 wnc-0301' pci wlan-card does still not work out of the box. My instructions are most of the time still valid for Kubuntu 7.04. However, some smaller changes are necessary:
- Kubuntu loads the module rt61 instead of rt61pci in oder to use the card out of the box. Modify my instructions above accordingly.
- KNetworkmanager works out of the box. In case your the WLAN-Card doesn't appear, activate it under "Manual Configuration". Sometimes KNetworkmanager needs several attempts to connect to wpa-protected networks.

1. Staatsexamen Lehramt Grund- und Mittelstufe an der Universität Hamburg

Derzeit bereite ich mich auf das erste Staatsexamen Lehramt Grund- und Mittelstufe vor. Ursprünglich für den Eigenbedarf habe ich mir eine Tabelle mit OpenOffice.org gebastelt, mit der man vorausrechen kann, welchen Einfluss die einzelnen Prüfungen auf die Gesamtnote haben werden. U.a. ist mir dadurch bewusst geworden, dass es keinesfalls empfehlenswert ist, sich für alle Prüfungen gleich intensiv vorzubereiten. Vielmehr lohnt ein Vorbereiten nach bestimmten Strategien, die ich in der Tabelle beschreibe.

Die Tabelle ist nicht geeignet für Studierende, die ihr Studium mit einer praktischen Prüfung (Sport, Technik, bildende Kunst) abschließen, bzw. müsste ggf. für diesen Personenkreis modifiziert werden.

UPDATE
Inzwischen ist das 1. Staatsexamen (sehr) erfolgreich bestanden und ich habe einen Referendariatsplatz erhalten. Die oben erläuterte Strategie hat sich aus meiner Sicht bewährt.

HP PSC 1210v unter Suse 10.1

Ich nutze eine Kombination von Drucker und Scanner von HP mit der Bezeichnung "HP PSC 1210v". Dieser wird eigentlich gut unter Linux unterstützt. Unter Suse 10.1 musste ich anfangs allerdings die Erfahrung machen, dass der Drucker beim Booten bereits an sein musste, damit er für Cups aktiviert wird. Wenn ich ihn erst später einschaltete, musste ich ihn zusätzlich manuell in Suse aktivieren. Mit Suse 10.0 ging es noch automatisch.

Als Grund hat sich herausgestellt, dass unter Suse 10.1 defaultmäßig der veraltete Treiber hp-officeJet (hpoj) verwendet wird, anstelle des besseren Nachfolgers hplip. Der Nachfolger wird aber ebenfalls mit Suse 10.1 mitgeliefert. Man muss also lediglich das Paket hp-officeJet deinstallieren und die beiden Pakete hplip und hplip-hpijs anstelle dessen zu installieren. Danach müssen Drucker und Scanner nochmal neu in Yast eingerichtet werden.

Nun wird das Gerät auch bei einem verspäteten Einschalten erkannt. Man sollte allerdings trotzdem das Gerät ein paar Sekunden vor dem Druckbefehl einschalten, um Schwierigkeiten zu vermeiden.

Druckerverwaltung unter Suse

Mit SUSE 10.1 hatte ich das Problem, dass der USB-Drucker deaktiviert ist, wenn er erst direkt vor dem Drucken eingeschaltet wird. Theoretisch könnte man ihn im 'KDE Kontrollzentrum -> Angeschlossene Geräte -> Drucker' erneut starten. Nur leider funktioniert das nicht. Es wird nach dem Benutzernamen und Passwort gefragt, ohne dass aber die Angaben für den Benutzer oder Root akzeptiert würden.

Folgendermaßen habe ich das Problem beseitigt:

Als Root auf der Konsole folgendes eingeben:
lppasswd -g sys -a root
und dann nachfolgend das Root-Passwort nennen. Nun lässt sich der Drucker im KDE-Kontrollzentrum mit dem Benutzernamen 'root' und dem entsprechenden Passwort starten. Wenn man nun noch
lppasswd -g sys -a BENUTZERNAME
eingibt, geht es auch als Benutzer.

Noch schöner wäre es, wenn es ganz ohne Benutzernamen und Passwort ginge...

Lexikon der Religionspädagogik

Seit heute habe ich das Lexikon der Religionspädagogik auf CD-ROM. Das Lexikon nutzt die Software PC-Bibliothek, die auch von vielen Produkten von Duden, Langenscheidt, Brockhaus und Mayer verwendet wird. Außerdem ist es auch mit der Nachfolgesoftware Office-Bibliothek kompatibel, und kann so auch problemlos unter Linux genutzt werden. Inhaltlich sind die Artikel von sehr unterschiedlicher Qualität. Anders als im Vorwort der Buchausgabe angedeutet, scheint keine Update-Möglichkeit des Inhalts vorgesehen zu sein, schade.

Laptec Media Keyboard

Ich bin immer noch auf der Suche nach einer möglichst leisen und nicht zu teuren Tastatur. Bei Karstadt habe ich heute das 'Laptec Media Keyboard' für rund 9 Euro gekauft. Es ist nicht super leise, aber trotzdem schonmal deutlich leiser als meine bisherige CHERRY Tastatur. Die Tastenanordnung ist ok. Der Tastenanschlag fühlt sich zunächst gut an. Beim schnellen Tippen klemmen die Tasten aber schon mal, so dass es leider nicht wirklich brauchbar ist.

Die Multimediatasten lassen sich unter KDE aktivieren, indem man im 'KDE Kontrollzentrum' folgendes Tastaturlayout einstellt: "Genius Comfy KB-21e-Scroll" (sic!). Mit 'KHotKeys' (ebenfalls im 'KDE Kontrollzentrum') lassen sich dann den Sondertasten Aktionen zuordnen.
Firefox ordnet nutzt die Vor- und Zurück-Tasten out-of-the-box.

Genius LuxeMate 300 unter Linux

Ich bin derzeit auf der Suche nach einer Tastatur, die möglichst leise ist. Grund ist, dass es meine Frau nervt, wenn sie mich früh morgens im Halbschlaf beim Tippen hört. Gestern habe ich bei Saturn die "Genius LuxeMate 300" für rund 15 Euro gekauft. Von der Lautstärke her bin ich zwar zufrieden, aber die Pfeiltasten sind zu nah zu den übrigen Tasten angeordnet, um zu beim Schreiben intuitiv ertasten zu können. Außerdem stört mich, dass es links unten noch vor der Strg-Tasten eine FN-Taste gibt. Ich werde die Tastatur deswegen wieder umtauschen (das geht zum Glück problemlos bei Saturn).

Hier trotzdem ein paar Infos zur Nutzung unter Linux für die Nachwelt:

Kann an PS/2 (Adapter liegt bei) oder USB angeschlossen werden. Probiert habe ich es allerdings nur mit PS/2. Die Tastatur wird sofort erkannt.

Das Lexikon der Vor- und Familiennamen

Im Downloadshop von Duden und Brockhaus gibt es derzeit das Das Lexikon der Vor- und Familiennamen für 14,95 € zum Download zu kaufen. Als Software wird die Office-Bibliothek eingesetzt. Eine CD-ROM-Version wird derzeit nicht angeboten. Dies ist schade, weil man einen Internetdownload nicht weiterverkaufen kann, wenn man das Lexikon nicht mehr benötigt. Durch Zufall habe ich dann aber herausgefunden, dass der TVG-Verlag eine Lizenzausgabe des Lexikons im Programm hat. Technisch scheint es sich um fast das selbe Produkt zu handeln, nur dass es auf CD-ROM ausgeliefert wird. Es lässt sich problemlos in die Office-Bibliothek einbinden und trägt dort auch den Titel der Duden-Version. Zudem kostet es nur 9,95€ - allerdings plus zusätzlichem Porto. Insgesamt die bessere Methode das Lexikon zu kaufen.
