BooTown is having auditions Sunday, July 19th (1-3 PM) for two shows we have coming up this fall. If you know anyone that might be interested or have actor lists that you could send this info to, that would be UHMAZING! Thank you sooo much!

We have two shows coming up in the fall that we need to cast:

1. Ace Skates on Thursdays
-1 Woman, 1 Man, 1 person who can play an 11 year old boy
-Playwright Truman Phelps describes this show as an 8 year old's existential journey. I describe it as Kick-ACE! Philip Hays will direct.
-Rehearsals will start early-mid August. Performance dates are (tentatively) Thursday September 10, Thursday September 17, and Thursday September 24.
-each scene of this show will take place in a different outdoor location within short walking distance of each other. so if you are allergic to being outside BE WARNED.

2. Our as-of-yet-untitled Halloween Show
-This show will be written by an ensemble cast of 5 or 6. Emily Hynds will direct. It. will. be. gorey.
-Rehearsals will start at the end of September. This show has a one-night-only performance, probably on Thursday October 29.
-This show might also be performed outside, so again, if you have allergics to nature, BE EVEN MORE WARNED.

Please come prepared with a monologue/story/whatever as long as it has a sense of character. The auditions will be at the Spacetaker office located in Winter Street Studios (2101 Winter, Houston, TX 77007).

individual will bring a bold, contemporary vision and revamp the
website to better reflect the organization’s programs.
Responsibilities include: define, architect and implement website
enhancements to existing content, and incorporate new interactive
elements including video and sound; and develop page layouts,
creation, development, scalability and functionality of the web site.
The anticipated project completion is September 1. If you have a

Recess invites resident artists to use free non-living flex space as work space, exhibition space and/or non-traditional performance space. The space is open to the public and free of charge. Artists may engage with their audience in a manner specific to their creative goals, using Recess as a studio, stage, experimental platform. Artists have access to their space for the full duration of their residency, and will be given a small materials stipend based on the length of their residency. In conversation with Recess curators, artists designate their own work hours and the degree to which they coincide with public hours.

Call for Entries: Bayou City Art Festival Downtown’s Art on Water, Oct. 9-11

HOUSTON (July 7, 2009) – It’s time to get the creative juices flowing for the Call for Entries for Bayou City Art Festival Downtown’s annual “Art on Water” floating art exhibition. The event, located in Houston’s City Hall Reflection Pool, 901 Bagby between Walker and McKinney Streets in Hermann Square, is the centerpiece of the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown October 10-11, 2009.

Individuals, groups and students are invited to design original floating, stationary or kinetic art pieces for the water-locked art display. “Art on Water” is launched October 9 and is up through Sunday, October 11. The pieces are on view to approximately 30,000 art festival patrons.

“Art on Water,” presented by Art Colony Association, producer of Bayou City Art Festival Downtown, invites artists to submit a rendering and description of their artwork for consideration now through September 18. Bayou City Art Festival Downtown staff and invited outside jurors will select fifteen (15) pieces for the exhibit. Festival art jurors will award cash honors to the first ($500), second and third place ($250 each) artists on Sunday, October 11. Festival patrons will also select a Patron's Choice award ($250).

No advertisements or name recognition is allowed on the artwork. Other requirements are as follows: size, maximum six-foot base; no height restrictions. Materials must be waterproof and non-bio-degradable. The floating work must be weighted with plastic weights. Use of any material that will disintegrate, dissolve or in anyway damage the reflecting pool or stain the water or concrete is strictly prohibited.

Bayou City Art Festival Downtown primes the heart of the city for a weekend of art in the city. The juried fine art festival, framed by Houston’s world-class skyline, is a one-of-a-kind outdoor gallery with its highly acclaimed mix of visual, performing, culinary and interactive arts.

Over the two-day festival, art lovers enjoy downtown’s newly fashioned pedestrian promenades in and around City Hall. Walker, Bagby and McKinney Streets, closed to vehicular traffic, are lined with artists’ booths where patrons can interact with 300 juried fine artists one-on-one. The Festival also encompasses Houston Public Library Downtown Plaza and Sam Houston Park, which are home to the Capital One Bank Creative Zone for children’s interactive art projects and international food and wine cafes, respectively.

The City of Houston and Houston Parks & Recreation Department, Budweiser, Capital One Bank, KTRK-TV, Houston Chronicle and Legacy at Memorial high-rise apartments are among the Festival sponsors. The Festival is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

Jerry's Artarama Presents: Steampunk Art Contest!

Art on Water Call for Entries

Open to individuals, groups and students, piece will be on display for three days to over 30,000 art festival patrons.

Art on Water, presented by Art Colony Association, invites artists to submit a rendering and description of their Art on Water project for consideration now through September 18, 2009. We're seeking submissions of ART, MUSIC and LITERATURE to be part of Karma's hanging art garden, an experiment in public art.

All Karma event attendees will have the opportunity to view, share, interact with, and take home pieces of music/art/literature submitted by you to the Karma art garden experiment.

There are no guidelines as to tangible format, subject matter, or quantity (although multiple copies of your work, say 5-10 (or more), would delight us).

Artist Call for Entries

Spacetaker and Winter Street Studios announces a call for entries for the upcoming exhibition: Parallel Universes – The Art of Quantum Physics - A Conspiracy of Space, Time & Art Parallel Universes – the Art of Quantum Physics is conceived to allow artists to collaborate with each other, explore and create effects of art worlds. The nature of another reality is often mysterious, known only by its effect on our own world.

The exhibition will showcase artists interested in exploring the relationship between art and quantum physics. Fifty artists selected will be asked to work with other artists to integrate their art as a whole, hence the title Parallel Universes. The show will begin with a “Exquisite Corpse” opening at Spacetaker on Thursday August 13, 2009.

Artists are asked to explore the concept of parallel universes and the nature of quantum physics as a series of inter-connecting planes of existence. Fifty selected participants will be asked to contribute two 12” x 12” paintings that represent their concept of Quantum Physics.

Exhibition jurors include Solomon Kane, Paula Hawkins and David Brown.

Fifty paintings will be used to create a Parallel Universes Exquisite Corpse collaborative piece and a set of limited editon prints will be made to benefit the Houston Artist Field Guide, a new Spacetaker project. All paintings will be available for sale, with 75% of the proceeds going to the artist and 25% supporting the Artist Resource Center.

There is a $ 25.00 entry fee to help cover expenses, made payable to Spacetaker at the time artists pick up their canvases. Two 12” x 12” canvases will be given to the selected artists, courtesy of Jerry’s Artarama and Spacetaker.

Artist Reception at Spacetaker Thursday, August 13th 6 – 10 pm
Viewing is through Saturday, August 15th, 2009.

A private artist’s reception will be at Spacetaker, which is located at Winter Street Studios 2101 Winter Street, Studios B10 – 11 (First Floor) Houston, Texas 77007 on the evening of August 13th from 6 – 10 pm, with public viewing on August 14th and 15th. An exquisite corpse party will ensue on the evening of August 14th from 5-8 for the public reception. On Saturday the 15th there will be an art & reading workshop for children and parents which explores science and art, followed by a lecture. All events are free to the public.

FotoFest Online Call for an Artist for POKE!

FotoFest is reserving one spot in the upcoming fall exhibition POKE! - Artists and Online Social Media, September 10 – October 24, 2009, for an artist chosen through an online open call.

The exhibition, POKE! focuses on artists responding to the internet and utilizing web-technologies and online social media, i.e. Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Google Maps dating sites, Twitter, etc. FotoFest is interested in viewing artist-created “hacked” websites, “crowdsourced” projects where artists act as facilitators and recruit others to implement the scenarios they create, appropriated online content, and interactive work that is able to function in a gallery setting.

POKE! is a group exhibition that will take place at the FotoFest Gallery in Houston, Texas. FotoFest is looking for original, well thought out, content driven work about contemporary life as lived through the filter of the internet. Submission will be accepted via email only. To submit, send the following information to exhibits@fotofest.org with subject line of POKE SUBMISSION

1. A written statement or project description. The statement should not be longer than one page. It must clearly define the purpose of the work, the medium, and the size of the work and/or installation.

2. Send no more than (10) images. We will only accept digital files in the jpeg or zip file formats. We use PCs at FotoFest so please check your file extensions. The images must be formatted at least 72DPI, 5 x 7 inches. The whole submission package cannot be larger then 9MB or the submission will bounce back. Web links are acceptable for video or online pieces.

3. Please include a separate caption sheet, including the following information for each image: medium, year, dimensions, any special installation requirements.

4. Include a Curriculum Vitae: One page summary or longer resume, with all contact information (name, complete address, phone number, email, website)

5. These materials MUST be received by midnight on Friday, July 3.

A P.A., or Production Assistant, is the primary entry-level job for the film/video industry. They provide support and assistance to almost all areas of production. In doing so, P.A.s build upon their work experience while getting an overview of all departments and what's needed to move up the film/video production ladder. The Texas Film Commission's P.A. Workshop is a two-day, introductory course that comprehensively teaches the requirements of the job. Taught by working industry professionals, the Workshop includes paperwork, terminology and set etiquette; opportunities to meet and learn from crew members in all areas of production; simulations of on-set work flow; and tips for a successful job search.

Sloan Foundation Producers Grant

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation will award one participant of Film Independent's Producers Lab the second annual Sloan Producers Grant. The winner will receive a $25,000 development grant, admission to Film Independent's 2009 Producers Lab, and year-round support from Film Independent. The grant is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which seeks to create and develop new scripts and films about science and technology and to see them into commercial production with national and international distribution. To apply for the Sloan Producers Grant, the filmmaker must apply to the 2009 Producers Lab and indicate in their letter that they wish to be considered for the Sloan Grant. To be eligible for the Sloan grant the applicant must be involved as producer and possess the rights to the script with which they are applying. The screenplay should have a scientific, mathematical, and/or technological theme and storyline or have a leading character who is a scientist, engineer, or mathematician.

You can’t tune out talk of crisis, meltdown, bail out. Anxiety marks the current zeitgeist as we collectively hold our breath. What does it look like to confront this anxiety or escape from it all together?

Cantanker magazine is seeking submissions of artwork that relate to personal, social, political, or economic anxiety. Art may address alienation, disaster, chaos, abandon, distraction or frivolity. Formal elements like materials, color, and composition may also express tension. New work that addresses the theme of anxiety in thoughtful and playful ways is preferred.

Selected work will be featured in Cantanker’s full-color summer art catalog, Issue 8: Anxiety and in a group exhibition at Pump Project Art Complex opening August 29, 2009.

About the Juror:
Andrea Mellard helps coordinate innovative exhibitions and programs as the Curatorial Associate and Manager of Public Programs at the Austin Museum of Art. She came to Austin seven years ago to earn a M.A. in American Studies from the University of Texas. Before moving to Austin, she worked as a curatorial and research assistant at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. Drawing on an interdisciplinary background she seeks to make connections between visual art and other cultural expressions, inspiration and everyday experience.

Submission Guidelines:
•    Submitted work must either formally or conceptually address the theme ANXIETY.
•    Works can be executed in any media, traditional or digital/new media.
•    All works must be submitted digitally in high-resolution jpg files (300 dpi or larger).
•    Video work must be submitted as still images.
•    Work submitted may be in any size and will be appropriately scaled to fit the catalog.
•    Only recent or newly created work will be considered.
•    Submissions must be made online at www.cantanker.com. Please note that submissions cannot be mailed.
•    Work submitted must be available for the group show August 30 – September 19, 2009.
•    All artists are welcome to submit except those who are members of the Cantanker staff.

Entry Requirements:
•    $10 for a single submission, $20 for 3 submissions.
•    There is no upper limit on submissions.
•    Artists should provide a brief statement about their work. (150 words or less).

Jury Process & Dates
•    Submissions will be juried by Andrea Mellard.
•    Artists will be notified of their acceptance by August 3.
•    Accepted submissions will be printed in full color in Issue 8 of Cantanker with full credit given to the artist.
•    Selected artists will be contacted by the Cantanker editorial staff with details regarding Issue 8: Anxiety group show set to open August 29, 2009.
•    Selected artists are responsible for shipping expenses to the gallery. Cantanker will provide return shipping at Cantanker’s expense.

Houston, Texas - Lawndale Art Center invites artists living within 100 miles of Houston to submit artworks for a chance to be included in its annual open-call, juried exhibition, The Big Show, and a shot at one of three cash prizes. This year's Guest Juror, Laura Fried, Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, will select the show and three award winners based on work submitted in person to Lawndale Art Center. Artists may submit up to three pieces of artwork along with a $30 entry fee ($25 for Lawndale members) on June 24 and 25, 2009. Jurying of the actual artwork will be conducted over two days. Works not selected for the show must be picked up by the artists on June 29 and 30, 2009. About The Big Show:

Each year Lawndale Art Center invites a different guest juror to select the work submitted by artists living within 100 miles of Houston. Artists are invited to bring up to three works of art, not previously shown in Houston, to Lawndale Art Center where the work is juried on-site for a chance to be included in the show and a shot at one of three cash prizes. Emerging artists selected for The Big Show have received gallery representation and greater exposure for their work as a result. Eileen Maxson, recipient of the Texas Prize in 2005 first exhibited her winning video in the Big Show 2003. First Prize in the 2003 Big Show went to Robert Pruit whose work was included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial in New York City, NY.

About the Guest Juror:
Laura Fried is the Assistant Curator of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, where she recently organized British artist Carey Young's first monographic museum exhibition in the United States. A co-curator of exhibitions in the Main Galleries and The Front Room, Fried also oversees a number of ongoing exhibition programs at the Contemporary, including the Great Rivers Biennial, Flat Files and the Emerson Visiting Critics and Curators. Fried is a regular contributor to museum and gallery exhibition catalogs as well as regional publications, and she serves as Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Missouri St. Louis. Fried is currently preparing a solo show with Los Angeles and Cambridge based artist/musician Stephen Prina to open in 2010.

The Shell Center for Sustainability Call

The Shell Center for Sustainability will hold a sustainability water conference in October 2009. The Water in the Houston Metabolism - Water needs and water quality for this century conference includes an art exhibition featuring the work of local artists interpreting and representing how the technical issues of water in the region impact the life of those who live there. There will be a People's Choice award presented to the top three favored artworks.

We hope some of you remember 600 sq mi: Photos from Houston, Houstonist's first photo show, which we held back in 2007. We knew there were a lot of talented photographers in Houston, but that show ended up being even better than we expected: around 60 amazing images from 39 photographers, plus one heck of an opening reception. So we were just thinking: Why not do it again?

And we are.

Houstonist is proud to announce 600 sq mi: Hidden, our second biennial photo show. It will be a juried show, like before, though this time around it'll open in October at Xnihilo Gallery in the Montrose. The theme of the show, "Hidden," reflects some of the things we love most about our hometown: its hidden corners, unknown places, overlooked people, the things that make Houston a truly wonderful city for anyone who bothers to scratch the surface a bit. We all have our favorite bits of hidden Houston — and this is your chance to show us yours. (And yes, this show is open to anyone, regardless of experience. Whether you just picked up a camera yesterday or make a living with your lens, we want to see your work.)

So, what we need now are your images. Head over to the show's website, 600sqmi.com, for all the information you'll need, including instructions, rules, the official entry form, FAQs and a link to contact us with your questions and concerns. Keep in mind that we will be updating the site as often as we need to with the latest news, deadlines, answers to your questions and anything else we think will come in handy.

The deadline for submitting your photos to us is Monday, July 13, 2009, which gives you six weeks to pull some images together and check your couch cushions for the $15 entry fee. We can't wait to see what y'all send us, and we're looking forward to an incredible show.

Entries and Eligibility

There is a $30 submission fee for all non-Lawndale Art Center members. Members receive $5 off the cost of entry.
Works in all media completed during 2007-2009 will be accepted.
The exhibition will be juried from actual work.
Open to all artists living within 100 miles of Houston or in the following counties: Angelina, Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Tyler, Walker, Waller, Washington, Wharton.
Artists are limited to three (3) entries.
Only original works are eligible; works publicly exhibited in Houston, created in art classes, or copies of works will be disqualified.
Works that are not stable enough to endure the exhibition will be disqualified and are not insurable.
Fragile works, such as drawings or photographs, must be framed or securely mounted under glass or Plexiglas.
All works must be ready for installation upon submission; do not submit work which is not ready to handle (i.e. wet paintings and work without hardware).
