Hello everyone,

I am starting a library at a charter school, Carter G. Woodson School of Excellence, in Winston-Salem. Through my work with WFU's Community Law & Business Clinic, I have developed a relationship with the school. The school has 300 K-5 students, 75 middle school students and 75 high school students and has served these children for over 10 years. However, the school has never had a library. It has a wonderful space for it - lots of windows and floor space. The student population is 87% free and reduced lunch - in other words, it is a high needs school. I've worked on this since April, and now that my semester has ended, I've been able to devote a lot more time to ensuring the kids have a library when they come back to school. Last week, I met with the director of the Forsyth County Public Library and its Technical Specialist to figure out how to even begin a library! This week, I met with the Associate Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning at Winston-Salem State University to discuss media center technology. I also spoke with WSSU's Curriculum Library Librarian about developing a book collection appropriate for K-12 students.

I am meeting with Carter G. Woodson's grant writer and principal Tuesday morning, because I am now at the point that I believe (perhaps naively) that I am ready to begin the library. Although the school and I plan on applying for grants to help fund the library, many of those grants (if we were to receive them) will not provide funding until late fall. So, I am emailing all of you. No, I'm not necessarily asking for money. I'm asking for ANYTHING! Keep in mind that we are starting from scratch. Carter G. Woodson is run by a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit corporation, so any donations you make should be tax deductible. (I'm not a tax attorney; I just play one in school and in the summers - for actual legal tax advice, see a professional!). I can get you the exact name of the corporation and address and tax number, if you are interested.

A short list of various items that would be greatly appreciated are the following, but certainly not limited to:
* Books for kids ages 5-18. They can be fiction, non-fiction, biography, science, art, etc.
* Even if you don't have books appropriate for ages 5-18, you can trade in your books for store credit at various used book stores. In Winston and Greensboro, Edward McKay has a wonderful selection of books that we could use in our library, so you could trade your books in for store credit and give the school your credit.
* Posters
* Magazines appropriate for ages 5-18 (some magazines such as nature magazines can even be a year or so old).
* For those of you who live close to me: lightly used bean bags or comfy reading chair for kids, lightly used fun carpet or rug for a reading area, tables and chairs and bookshelves, computers, headsets with microphone, printer.
* Anything else you can think of for a library.

For those of you who have any pennies left in these difficult economic times, we can use your pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars. Not only will be buying books, tables, chairs, bookshelves, but I have also developed a cost spread sheet of the library supplies we're going to order - from spine labels, book pockets, check-out cards to date stamps and ink pad. If you cannot help at this point, perhaps you can ask your friends and family, church members, community organizations and others if they would like to help.

District Note: The Swine Flu and You

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

You may have heard about Scouts getting Swine Flu while / after attending Boy Scout summer camp last week at Camp Daniel Boone, near Asheville.

Parents or leaders might call wanting to know what we are doing at Camp Raven Knob to prevent this from happening there. I am attaching our “plan” which is being distributed to the leaders of all troops signed up to attend. We will also be covering this at leaders’ meetings on the first day of camp. Feel free to share this with parents or leaders. Thanks! to Keith Bobbit and his staff for putting together such a thorough procedure to keep our kids healthy.

The Surry County Health Department is reviewing the plan, and I will forward updates if the plan is amended.

Attention Scoutmasters:

There will be a Venturing Interest Dinner next Tuesday night, June 2^nd at the Truliant Federal Credit Union Pavilion (located at the Truliant facilities off of Hanes Mall Blvd- address is 3200 Truliant Way, Winston-Salem, NC). The event will start at 6:30 PM and will include a meal of fried chicken and barbeque (no charge for attendees).

The event is designed for churches in the area to attend to see whether Venturing would be a program for their church to adopt. Even though the event was not specifically designed for Scoutmasters to attend, we would like to extend an invitation to you (if you’d like to bring a couple of other troop leaders with you, that’s fine too).

Denny Boyce, the Venturing Crew advisor for Clemmons United Methodist Church will be talking about the things that they do in their Venturing Crew and tell how it can provide an extra challenge for older Boy Scouts who are looking for more high adventure things. The troop and crew there work well together and work as a team to provide the best opportunities for their youth.

District Note: Introductory Swimming Lessons - FREE!

For many first year Boy Scouts, the CRK swim test and the Swimming merit badge come easy. But we also see a number of boys who have difficulty in water and can not swim. Swim lessons at camp are good but often are not enough to get a non-swimmer swimming.

Attached is a YMCA flier on their Introduction to Swimming classes for kids and adults - and it is FREE! If you know of someone who might benefit from this, please share the flier with them.

They will need to contact the Red Cross at 724-0511 and complete the registration form (part of the attached flier). Classes start soon, so please spread the word!

Your assistance is needed!

Did you know it is against the law for a local bakery to bake and sell a cake with the image of a Cub Scout emblem, the Boy Scout fleur de lis, or even the Eagle Scout badge? That is, unless they have acquired permission from the Boy Scouts of America to do so.

Local vendors located within our council boundaries who would only supply products using BSA insignia, trademarked images, and/or copyrighted phrases to the Old Hickory Council and its local units, may apply for single council licenses AT NO CHARGE. The license application is very simple, and can be faxed to the Old Hickory Council for signatures. The council will forward the application to the national office, and approval notification to the vendor is usually within 48 hours.

We want to compile a list of approved vendors to make available to our local volunteers and families, and we are asking you to help us promote this licensing process in your local communities. Please direct any business or individual who is providing pack or troop t-shirts, baking cakes for Scouting events, making signs with Scout emblems, or any similar products to the BSA website www.scouting.org. There, they will find an application for the local council supplier license. They can download the form, complete it, and fax it to the attention of Steve Wilburn at (336) 760-4222.

Our May District Round Table Meeting is this Thursday, May 14, 7:00 PM at Maple Springs UMC on Renolda Road. This is for ALL registered adult leaders in our district.

The Cub Scout session will be conducting "Youth Protection" training. I know, this can now be done online, but there are some extra benefits available from discussion in an in-person group session.

The Boy Scout session will be a presentation/demonstration of some of the latest technology in camping and outdoor gear and clothing being led by the Great Outdoor Provisioning Company.

Order of the Arrow

Our local Elauwit Chapter of the OA will have their monthly meeting to coincide with the Round Table meeting, as usual, but this month they are conducting a Brotherhood Help Session.

Brotherhood membership is a way of sealing or confirming your membership in the Order of the Arrow and advancing in your knowledge of the Order.

To become a Brotherhood member in the OA, you must have been an Ordeal member for at least 10 months, advance in your understanding of the OA, particiapte in a Brotherhood Hike and be presented with your new Brotherhood sash at a Brotherhood ceremony.

Our help session will be available to all adult and youth Ordeal members.

Every Scoutmaster should bring their OATR and all their Ordeal Candidates to this special session!

Our annual Piedmont District Advancement Camporee is this weekend at Camp Merriwood near Clemmons. Directions are included below and more details are available on our District Web Page at http://www.oldhickorycouncil.org/piedmont.html.

Merriwood Christian Camp is located 14 miles west of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is easily accessible, as it is only 10 minutes off of Interstate 40.

From the East (Traveling from Greensboro):
Travel on I-40 West. Take the Clemmons exit (Exit #184.) Turn Right off the exit ramp onto Lewisville Clemmons Road. At 1st stoplight, turn Left onto Peace Haven Road. Go to the end of Peace Haven Road. At the stop sign, turn Right onto Lasater Road. Go about ¾ of a mile, and turn Left (just after the large Center Grove Baptist Church) onto Center Grove Church Road. Go about 1 ½ miles and turn Left (across from the old Center Grove Baptist Church) to continue on Center Grove Church Road. Go about 3/10ths of a mile and turn Left into Merriwood Christian Camp.

From the West (Traveling from Statesville):

This is planned for ALL registered adult leaders in the Piedmont District so YOU should be there! This is a reminder that we will not have our monthly meeting this week. We will have all April Round Table sessions on Thursday, April 16.

I know we usually have these meetings on the second Thursday of the month, but this Thursday is Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter) which is observed by many of our local churches and meeting on this day has caused numerous conflicts in the past. Maple Springs UMC really prefers that we not have meetings while they are having a church service, and they do have services this Thursday night.

The April 16 date is what is on the council calendar and it was in the last issue of the Raven.

District Note: Recharter / District Pinewood Derby

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

Attention units who have not yet rechartered:

Just a reminder that your recharter is due at the end of March and will be considered late as of April 1. It is a concern that some units may overlook an important step in rechartering as we rush to get things done by the end of the month. In order to be considered on-time, all of the following must be done:

Recharter paperwork must be submitted (electronically or the “old fashioned way”); applications for anyone not printed on the original recharter paperwork must be submitted (you are not allowed to simply write their name in).
Necessary signatures must be on accompanying paperwork (this is usually the minister’s signature where it says executive officer and the unit leader signature); committee chair and Chartered Organizational rep. should sign any new adult applications.
Money must be submitted to cover the charter fee, membership fees and Boys’ Life subscriptions

If one of these three things is not done, then the recharter cannot be considered on-time.

The Pinewood Derby will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at St. Peter’s World Outreach Center. The address is 3683 Old Lexington RD., Winston Salem, NC 27107.

Registration will take place between 8-8:30 AM. The race will begin at 9 AM. The races should be finished by noon.

Cost is $2 per Cub Scout.

The event is open to all currently registered Cub Scouts in Piedmont District. Boys who have already crossed over to Boy Scouts may not participate.

If you missed our 2009 OHC Banquet at Bermuda Run this year, you sure missed a good one!

Special congratulations are due to the 2008 Class of Silver Beaver Award Recipients named in honor of James E. (Doc) Bennett, Jr. Our six recipients this year are Kirby Smitherman, George Clinard, Pete Honaker, Cmeron Finley, Bruce Sherman, and Bill Seippel.

The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award was presented to Mr. James Brown and Learning For Life Awards were presented to Tamra Thomas, Ron Rash, and Elaine Pegram.

Our 2008 Eagle Scout Class is named for Mr. Charles W. Griffin, our Council Commissioner. Charles administered the Eagle Charge for those Eagles present.

Piedmont was one of the three districts to attain the 2008 Centennial Quality District Award. (Others were Salem and Hanging Rock.)

Russell Shouse, James Grimes, and Phillip Thompson were recognized with Veteran Awards for 60 Years of Scouting!

The atmosphere was fun, the food was great, and the fellowship was fabulous. If you were there, you know. If you missed it, then all I can say is that you should plan on attending next year!

For the Cub Scout session, the March topic will be “Jurassic Pack” and for their hands on activity they will be building terrariums.
For the Boy Scout session, the March program will be on “Conducting Boards of Review” presented by Rusty Worthington.
The Venture Scout leaders will also have a separate session, but I do not currently know the topic - but I know it will be good!

IDEAS? We are also looking for topics for the Boy Scout Round Table meetings for the 2009-2010 Season starting in September. If there are programs that you would like to see (or present) or Scouting Topics about which you would like to know more, please share your ideas and requests with me or David Curtis. The idea is to have program topics for next year planned by the end of this season in May.

Not quite ready for on-line renewal and feel you need some personal help? We will have a Charter Renewal Help Session during the hour preceding this week's Round Table meeting. Commissioners and Staff will be available 6-7:00 PM Thursday at Maple Springs UMC.

Can't get there quite that early? Bring in your charter materials, drop them off with us when you get there, and we will review it while you are in your Round Table session.

The North Carolina Forest Service will be conducting a Chainsaw Safety Training Course
at Camp Raven Knob on Saturday March 7, 2009. This course is required for anyone operating
a chainsaw at Camp Raven Knob. For those individuals who took the course three years ago,
it is now time to re-certify.

We will be meeting at the Barnhardt Training Center at 8:30 a.m. and will be at camp through the
day. Please bring your chainsaw and safety gear. Lunch will be provided to all participants. The
cost for the course is $20.00. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

We would ask that you forward this email to Scouters throughout your area who might be interested

District Note: ReCharter Help Session

TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT SCOUTERS:

We are planning to conduct a recharter help session during the hour prior to our March Round Table on Thursday, March 12. You can bring in your unit charter and we will have a Commissioner available to check it. If you can't get there the hour before, you can drop off your charter when you get there, we will check it while you are in the Round Table session, and you can pick it up afterwards.

Turning your charter in on time (complete with signatures and check) is one of the requirements for attaining the Centennial Quality Unit award so plan to get yours done early!
