Developed Shakta doctrine postulates seven chakras. These are called the Muladhara or "Root Support" at the base of the spine with four "petals", the Swadhishthana or "Own Abode" at the root of the genitals with six, the Manipura or "Fullness of Jewels" at the level of the navel with ten "petals", the Anahata or "Unstruck Melody" at the heart-centre with twelve, the Vishuddha or "Complete Purity" at the throat with sixteen, and finally the Ajna or "Guru's Command" at the brow with two "petals". The Crown centre, the Sahasrara-Padma or "Thousand Petalled-Lotus", located at the very top of the head, is technically speaking not a chakra at all, but the summation of all the chakras.

According to the traditional Tantric teachings, the seven chakras are strung like pearls or jewels along the brilliant thin thread of the sushumna nadi, which is the primary nadi in the body. On either side of the sushumna are the two main secondary nadis: the white moon-like ida on the left, containing descending vitality (apana), and the red sun-like pingala on the right, containing ascending vitality (prana in the narrow sense of the term). The tantric yogi aims to direct the subtle airs from these two primary side channels into the central sushumna nadi, and so activate the latent Kundalini energy. This then ascends through each of the chakras in turn, and when it reaches the top of the head, the yogi attains Liberation.

Tantric Views on Subtle Body and Elements

The Inner Fire and Inner Water are complimentary and related to the principles of expansion and contraction; male/solar energy and female/lunar energy respectively; as in Taoist Chinese Yang and Yin, or Tibetan Tantric Yab/Yum. The faculties of sight (fire) and taste (water) are characteristic of this expansion/contraction, which manifest erotically in the male and female body during sexual arousal and lovemaking. Fire and Water are seen as inherently orgasmic; and Tantric cosmology's "creation myth" suggests that the Water element must cool the Fire element enough so that life forms are able to emerge without being destroyed before their birth. Similarly, sexual union harmonizes the Inner Fire and Inner Water--and the Creation Potential is manifested, i.e., possible conception of a child. Tantric tradition does not neglect the "mundane" aspects of sexuality, such as simple release; nor does it ignore the more "traditional" concept of sex as procreation, for in actuality, the act of creating a new life is the ultimate sacramental product of heterosexual lovemaking. Rather than the Transcendental Siva/Sakthi Union; when a child is conceived, the Tantric couple rather takes on the aspects of Brahma and Saraswati, the Creative Principles. After the child's birth, Visnu/Laksmi, the Preserver, steps in through the Tantric parents to sustain the child. In the meantime, of course, Siva/Sakthi are still readily accessible to the Tantric couple, whether childless or a "family," leading to transcendence and ultimate Union *as* a couple.

The HEVAJRA-TANTRA, a Buddhist Tantric text, states: "The five Great Elements are physically produced in the body during lovemaking. Through the harmonization of the male and female sexual organs, hardness and erection are produced, calling up the Earth element. From the flow of charged sexual secretions, the Water element emerges; and the Fire element evolves through the passion and physical friction of Jewel and Lotus. The Air element is called forth by the movements of love, and the Ether aroused by the ecstatic Bliss."

"A number of writers and teachers, particularly in Western academia, have tried to divide the two great traditions of India of Veda and Tantra as different or even contrary. Some Yoga teachers have uncritically taken up this view as well. They see the Vedic tradition as Aryan and patriarchal and the Tantric tradition as non-Aryan and matriarchal. They identify the Vedic tradition with invading Aryans and the Tantric tradition with indigenous Dravidians. They see the Tantric as worshipping the Mother Goddess and the Vedic as rejecting her. They imply that Vedic and Tantric ideas and practices are very different.

Now that the Aryan Invasion theory is severely in question, and the Sarasvati River of Vedic fame, discovered as the main homeland of civilization in ancient India, we should re-examine these views. In my own more than thirty years of studying Vedic and Tantric texts in the original Sanskrit, I have also found remarkable connections between the two traditions.

Vedic and Tantric traditions are one, though with different orientations. The Vedic tradition is an earlier form of the Tantric, which itself is a later development of Vedic practices. Tantric teachings abound in the use of Vedic mantras and the mysticism of the Sanskrit alphabet. They use Vedic fire altars and practices and honour Vedic deities at an inner level. Inner Tantric Yoga reflects the four main Vedic deities of Agni, Soma, Vayu and Surya (the forces of fire, moon, wind and sun)."

We can see that with the ongoing controversy surrounding sex education in schools, the persistent negative image of sex as being ‘dirty’, increased divorce rates, sexual dysfunctions, sexual abuse, sexual crimes, abortions, fatherless children, broken homes, and the list goes on and on. What should have been a source of joy is a source of pain and problem upon the human race. The solution to our sexual problems lies not however in putting a seal of approval on perverse sexual acts, but by embracing true spiritual sexuality."

The sexual symbolism of Tantra, like the subject of sexuality in general, has always engaged the human mind. The modern mind seems to be obsessed with it as well. Many people into Tantra, as well as most of the scholars who write on it, seem unable to move beyond the physical suggestions of these symbols to their spiritual indications. This has kept the study and practice of Tantric Yoga at a superficial level in which its deeper cosmic and creative energies remain latent.

There is an inclination to reduce the Shiva linga and Shakti yoni, the two main Tantric symbols of ascending and descending forces – which are often represented by upright conical stones for the Shiva linga and ring stones or basis for the Shakti yoni – to merely the male and female sex organs, which is but one of their representations, and their erotic glorification. There is the tradition of Tantric sexuality of mithuna which uses sacred sex as part of Yoga practice. But it is not the only practice of Tantric Yoga and when done is integrated into a much larger array of practices.

The general public seems to have a vague sense that Tantr a has something to do with sex, while those with a bit more knowledge are likely to think of it as a form of sexual Yoga. The former impression, however limited, is far closer to the truth, but Tantra is a vast subject and not an easy term to define. We hope this overview will both provide some insight into and debunk many of the misconceptions that have developed about this remarkable spiritual path.

Many people who attend our introductory workshops give voice to the popular stereotypes and answer that it is something celebrities do, that it is about better sex and marathon lovemaking sessions. Others suggest that it is a way of bringing spirituality into sex, as if the two were ever separate. As Westerners and products of our culture, we cannot avoid the influence of this popular mythology, but in our practice and study, we strive to arrive at a deeper and, we hope, a more authentic understanding.

The myth that Tantra is primarily sexual originated in either scandalous or scandalizing 19th-century accounts of Tantric rituals. In the early 20th-century, Sir John Woodroffe, also known as Arthur Avalon, a British judge serving in India and a Tantric initiate himself, attempted to legitimize the tradition as part of a pro-Independence effort to celebrate Indian civilization; Avalon was one of the few Westerners involved in this effort, which included a number of influential upper-class Indians. Avalon and his circle de-emphasized the sexual aspects of Tantra, since these aspects remained scandalous to much of the general public and perhaps to Avalon himself, even though there is some evidence that he and his wife practiced Tantric sex together."

"A collection of lore about the concept of lovemaking without sexual satiety would not be complete without mentioning tantra. Yet few subjects are more bewildering than the concept of beneficial synergy between mates in the Hindu religion. On the one hand, there is the belief that creation itself arose from the divine sexual union of male and female. There is also the legend of Parvati, a primary personification of the Divine Feminine. She willingly chose grueling spiritual asceticism and privation in order to win her divine consort Shiva, unite with him, and thus bring love back into a forlorn world. (Shiva had abandoned the world in favor of ascetic solo practice after her death in a prior incarnation.)

On the other hand, the term tantra can create more confusion than clarity. Tantra comprises both a celibate tradition known as the “right-hand path” and a sexual tradition known as the “left-hand path.” Moreover, there exist both a Tibetan Buddhist tantra (to be discussed later) and the classic Hindu tantra. Finally, even within classic tantra, streams diverge—and have shifted with time.

Although there are now as many different sexual-tantra recipes as there are cat breeds, classic Hindu sexual tantra was not about mutual enlightenment or deeper union. Despite the showy display of worshiping the divine god or goddess in a shared ritual for raising the kundalini energy (refined life force energy), the maithuna (or “twinning”) ritual apparently developed for solo spiritual pursuits, not as a mutual, or ongoing, cultivation of sexual energy for spiritual purposes."

"To practice the Tantra, first understand that there are eight petals to the heart chakra as well as the chakra’s center. You must visualize a silver flame at the heart chakra’s center and recite the mantra of Zhunti Tathagata and Vairocana Tathagata going around the center with each chakra being the source of a sound syllable or word (AH, VIR, RAH, HUNG,CHIT, ….Namo, Sado, …). In other words, you visualize the heart chakra center point, and recite the jouint mantras going round it in a circle, always keeping your focus on the central channel. You recite the mantras along these chakra petal points in a circle to help send the chi there and open them. That’s one key point of the practice.

You can recite the mantras going clockwise around a chakra, counterclockwise, in a sphere on the point, or a circle traversing the zenith and nadir, and so on. Be creative. Someone will one day come along and say a particular direction is best or most efficient, but for now I’m saying try everything. You keep concentrating on the image of the flame so that it becomes stable, and you continue reciting the mantras on the chakra location, and on the bright points surrounding the chakra. That is the essence of the Tantra. Very simple, very easy, very quick, very clean, very effective."

Hatha yoga concerns two important and vital systems in the physical body- the solar and lunar forces. In tantra and in hatha yoga these are known as ida and pingala. Ida represents the mental force, and pingala the pranic force. In the body these pranic and mental forces interact with each other, respectively controlling, guiding and directing the senses of action and of knowledge. Due to them we live, move, think and know.

Pranic and mental force are conducted through ida and pingala nadis within the framework of the spinal passage. From each chakra they branch off via the network of nadis into all the respective organs and parts of the body. The scriptures and tantric texts state that in this physical body there is a complex of 72,000 nadis. I believe this is a conservative estimate. Nadi does not mean nerve. It means a flow, just as electricity, a radio wave or a laser beam is a flow. There are 72,000 channels or flows that carry these two interacting energies of ida and pingala from pore to pore of the human body. There is not one point in this body where you do not have the interaction of these two forces.

In the practices of hatha yoga we are concerned with the balance of ida and pingala; these two interacting forces of prana and mind. When the pranic force predominates and the mental force becomes subservient, there are physical imbalances due, to excess prana in the system. On the other hand, if the mental force is predominant and pranic force subservient, there are diseases related to the mind. This is the definition of somo-psychic and psychosomatic diseases. Diseases do not originate only in the mind, they also originate in the body. Body is part of the mind, and mind is part of the body. Mind and body are not two separate realities. At different stages of manifestation, we know them as body and mind, but in essence they are one."

1. Build sexual anticipation by kissing all around your lover’s face with soft, baby kisses and use your hands to caress the face, hair or body.

2. Use your nose to nuzzle and your lips to caress to your lover.

3. Tease your lover by tracing the outline of his/her lips with the tip of your tongue.

4. Now put your heart and body into a slow kiss alternating the pressure from gentle to deep with mouth slightly open.

5. Take your lover’s bottom lip between yours and suck gently. Make some sounds of pleasure.

6. Lick your lover’s teeth with your tongue and increase your breathing to short rapid breaths.

7. Wrap your lips around your lover’s tongue and suck passionately alternating your speed from slow to quick.

9. Dart your tongue in and out of your lover’s mouth rapidly and then slowly as if you were having intercourse. Remember to use your entire body and make all those wonderful sounds of love.

This is the Crown Chakra."
