Monetization is the ubiquitous buzz word for online video content. The fellas bring this age old debate to the foreground while discussing what works for online advertising and the overall structure of very different business plans. Everyone agrees that current advertising agencies need to start taking full advantage of the online space whether that is through sponsorship or creating social environments.

“In order to survive when the TV giants decide to go “all out” online, you are going to have to have a set of partnerships, alliances and new content that constantly come into play,” says Mike Michuad.

There are sites available that split advertising sales and host videos for free for content developers. But these sites may not allow you to have control over what ads are involved with the site. The network models or the strategy of going directly to B2B companies both have their own advantages, but the fellas disagree on who is doing it right.

“Social networking and community building are the future of advertising for local business,” explains Steve Weiss. The fellas do seem to agree on at least this one instance.

Eight years ago on this day I was fortunate enough to be in Philadelphia for the filming of a reading of the Declaration of Independence by some of Hollywood's finest actors. It was an experience I will never forget being in Independence Hall in the very place the document was signed 225 years earlier.

That film, which is introduced by Morgan Freeman and featured Mel Gibson, Ed Norton, Michael Douglas and many others was directed by Rob Reiner and shot by Conrad Hall shortly before his death. As you may know, the document was written to be read aloud and short of being on the steps of Indepence Hall in 1776, this reading was probably one of the more memorabe ones in history.

So, in the frenzy of beers, backyard barbeques and fireworks, take a moment to enjoy the words of our forefathers that started this whole crazy experiment we proudly call the United States of America.

KNOXVILLE -- Merchants in the The Old City, near downtown Knoxville, want to capitalize on the success of Sundown in the City, the free concert series in Market Square with one of their own.

The free series called Old City Live will feature Americana, Country and Bluegrass music on Thursday nights. All shows start at 8:00.

The concerts will be at the Old City Courtyard behind Southbound Bar & Grill. If it rains, shows will be moved inside to the Southbound Bar & Grill stage.

Quiet Earth Review of the Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia

The White clan are West Virginia’s most psychotic, fun living, pill popping, gun toting and just plain dangerous family ever. “Boy, this is how we do it hillbilly style” says one of the clan as he blows stuff away with a rifle in the backyard. There are loads of people in the White clan, and I could barely understand their thick Appalachian accents, but I have to tell you, I love these people. A beautiful toxic tonic to the fake drivel that make up the Kardashians. An inspiration to anarchists everywhere, and also to people who think that Ozzy Osbourne turned into a giant pansy. The doc. was the brainchild of Johnny Knoxville of Jackass fame, and MTV stumped up the finance.

You might have already heard of Jesco White, son of the mountain dancing legend D. Ray White who was shot to death in 1985. Jesco carries on the tap dancing tradition and was the subject of the 1989 cult documentary The Dancing Outlaw. This time the spotlight is on the whole psychotic family. We get to follow them around for a year of hell raising, philosophy and tragedy. “Philosophy?” I hear you gasp. Yes, well Jesco is pretty damn smart. He ain’t had no schoolin or nuttin, but he’s a highly intelligent if somewhat moody chap. The scene where Jesco takes us on a tour of his family’s grave plot and muses on the vagaries of life is incredibly poignant and a total head-do. The cemetery is basically stacked full of his brothers, sisters and cousins most of whom died young from car crashes or shootings.

Right, well on a more up note, the music in this doc. is finger plucking brilliant. A treat of blue grass banjo foot stomping toe tapping tunes. Much of it was composed by Deke Dickerson. Jesco’s good mate Hank Williams III is in the mix too, and actually provides commentary as well as tunes that Jesco dances to. On another technical note, I liked the fast paced editing, MTV style, and the fact that at 88 minutes it wasn’t too long. I hate really long documentaries. The scenes and on the fly interviews with family members were intercut with set piece interviews with Members of Authority, who provide their own rueful and basically resigned view of the clan White’s behavior.

The Tim Burton 3-D flick doesn't come out till spring 2010, but film fans now have their first look at Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen from the upcoming "Alice in Wonderland."

The lead role of Alice will be played by 19-year-old unknown Mia Wasikowska from Australia.

"The Gold Standard"

Is the traditional Hollywood film structure starting to lose its hold on standard distribution because of the rapid growth of online films? The fellas argue that the experience of going to a movie theater is still the “Gold Standard” for the entire industry; however, there are other types of entertainment and ways you can distribution it on the web that can bring you a much bigger audience and are more profitable.

Old school mentalities that films must be seen on the big screen are changing and in turn the “Gold Standard” is being challenged. The fellas debate what is a film and whether on-screen or on-web is the right way to go for indies.

“What filmmakers need to realize that it is no sin in making something that not the gold standard, we are entertainment makers and we want make content that moves people and something we can make a living doing” explains Steve Weiss, Director.

Community building is a hot topic in all industries and the same goes for independent film. These new channels of distribution can both help and hinder filmmakers that jump on the band wagon. Find out what paths the fellas think can work best.

Boys of Summerville at Roane State

Hot on the heels of their successful 2008-2009 Film Festival circuit for the movie, Boys of Summerville, the Benjamin Brothers have decided to end their festival run in the same place where the movie began: Roane County. Boys of Summerville was filmed entirely in east Tennessee, the majority of which was in Roane County. "Tennessee has so much to offer filmmakers. You have everything you need right here. Mountains, rivers, lakes, plains, valleys. And Roane County had just the look we wanted for the movie."

Boys of Summerville was shot in the summer of 2007. The entire crew, and the majority of the cast was from east Tennessee. And even some of the characters were based on real-life east Tennessee natives. “One of the characters in the movie Charles “Buddy” Davis, was based on our father, Charles Davis Benjamin, who passed away from cancer in 2000. I wanted to make a movie as a tribute to him, and since he loved comedies and softball so much, I thought this would be a perfect movie to make.”

The movie will show as the second installment of the Appalachian Dreams series, produced by Princess Productions and Gary Baker. Princess Productions, in conjunction with Muse Watson and Bill Landry, has been promoting the restoration of the Princess Theater in downtown Harriman while simultaneously pushing to revitalize the artistic movement in the area. Boys of Summerville will show on Friday, June 26th at 7:00 pm at the Roane State theater. Muse Watson and Bill Landry will open the show and also be available with the cast and crew for the Q&A following the screening.

Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at the Rocky Top General Store and Jewelry Exchange in Harriman, as well as at the door the night of the screening.
