Women Choose Thinner models

A survey of 470 female undergraduates claims two thirds reacted "favourably" to adverts using thinner female models.

University of Bath researchers found those preferring thinner models thought diet or exercise controlled weight and were "more likely" to like the product.

Those who believed weight was not controllable tended to be "larger" and less likely to be impressed by a thin model and the advertised product.

It follows calls for a ban on "stick thin" models at London Fashion Week.

The survey also suggested thin models were "more elegant, interesting and pleasant"

The recent idea among some commentators that women will respond to models who are average size is generally not right

Professor Brett Martin, from the university's marketing group in the School of Management, said: "This study shows us why using thin hot models is a successful strategy used by advertising companies."

The survey's results come after the organisers of last week's Madrid Fashion Week imposed regulations banning "super-skinny" models from the catwalks.

At the weekend, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell "applauded" the decision, and urged the organisers of this week's London Fashion Week to do the same.

But Prof Martin said the study suggested that the idea that women would respond better to models of "average" build was wrong.

Thinner women models tend to be more likeable and pleasant too, an idealised version of themselves.

Women who don't feel weight is under the control of individuals feel the model has just got lucky genetics and are less inclined to see the model as possessing more attractive psychological qualities, though they don't favour larger models either.

"So the recent idea among some commentators that women will respond to models who are average size is generally not right," he said.

Los Angeles – The screaming started early, while the sun was still shining brightly over the Mann Village Theater in the heart of Westwood on Monday, June 22, where director Michael Bay and company skipped down the red carpet for the Los Angeles Film Festival's premiere of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," and kept on going late into the night as Linkin Park took over the street with a live concert at the massive after party.

In between, all eyes were on the ravishing Megan Fox, who wore a revealing white jersey "side cowl gown" by Kaufman Franco and graciously signed autographs for her mostly-male adoring fans reaching madly across the barricades; they were screaming as loudly as the girls whose focus was on Fox's co-star, Shia LaBeouf. He wore a Prada suit and seemed slightly ill at ease, but maybe his hand still hurts, the one he injured in a DUI crash in 2008 and that continues to need repeated surgeries. He is still wearing bandages on it, and word is that it may never be the same. In fact, he hurt it in the middle of filming "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," and they had to work it into the story line.

At an earlier press conference, Fox marveled at her co-stars dedication, despite his pain

"Shia's level of commitment to this movie was incredible, because he showed up with his injury and acted as though he didn't have an injury ... and did things that were not safe for him to do. But he wanted this movie to be as real as possible," Fox said.

Joining the celeb-packed premiere screening were "Transformers" co-stars Josh Duhamel, Isabel Lucas and Tyrese Gibson. Others strutting their red-carpet best were Kim Kardashian, Reggie Bush, Ciara, Kendra Wilkinson, Kristin Cavallari, Josh Peck, Emile Hirsch, Shawn Johnson, and Vanessa Minnillo and Brenda Song.
