What do an auto insurance broker, a cell-phone service provider, a landlord, and a prospective employer have in common? They all might want a peek at your credit report before agreeing to a longterm financial commitment with you. "All customers seeking service that extends them credit, such as a phone contract, undergo a credit check," says Matt Wakefield, a spokesperson for T-Mobile. That means that, along with your personal information, your credit accounts are also up for review: car and bank loans; bankruptcies, collections, and other information in the public record; and inquiries from everyone who has accessed your credit report within the last two years.

Know Your Rights

If you want to avoid indecent exposure of your credit score, you need to know your rights, as well as what's on your report. Check your score with the three major credit bureaus -- Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion -- at least once each per year, so you can find and sort out any discrepancies among their reports. Next, familiarize yourself with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which safeguards your privacy by restricting who has access to your report's sensitive information. But first, you've got to know who's keeping score.

Job (In)Security: Prospective Employers

Did you know that a prospective employer might demand to see your credit report? A full 42 percent of employers run credit checks on job applicants, according to the Society of Human Resource Managers. Greg Powers recently found that out firsthand, when he recently screened when he was screened for an opening at Fidelity. "They told me right up front they had a credit threshold that, if I fell below, would automatically disqualify me from employment, regardless of how I did on the rest of the interview," he says. That's not unusual, says Joe Rotondo, VP of compliance for Sterling Info Systems, an employment and background-screening services firm. Powers, Rotondo says, was up for a position that would require knowledge of clients' personal financial matters. Credit checks for jobs like that are common, and most applicants grant an employer permission to run the check. Potential employers' inquiries don't lower a credit score, Rotondo says.

Baby, You Can Drive My Car: Auto Insurers

Powers's credit history may have played a role in his auto-insurance premium. After letting coverage lapse briefly following the sale of a vehicle, Powers says, he was quoted very high premiums even though he had had no accidents or moving violations. Powers, a father of three, suspects that the gap (along with a few missed bill payments) knocked his score down; a State Farm Insurance representative confirms that the company uses credit information to determine risk, along with other rating variables. But the majority of states prohibit insurers from using credit as the sole criterion in underwriting and pricing decisions, according to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America. Other factors include driving record, age, gender, and the amount of driving anticipated.

With This Ring: Cell-Phone Service Providers

A few months ago, Kent Miller, a Seattle-based Web producer, was in a Verizon store, waiting for his credit to be checked so he could sign up for cell-phone service. "I didn't think I had a problem with my credit, but I hadn't checked it myself," he says. Not knowing your credit score and standing is a mistake that you can easily remedy by requesting your credit report. If you discover that your score is on the lower end, but you're still hankering for a tricked-out mobile phone, some cell phone companies offer prepaid options that forego the credit check entirely.

Rental Health: Landlords

Though Kate Crane suspected her credit score wouldn't be an issue, she admits to a moment of doubt after signing off on a credit check for a new landlord. "One always worries to some degree about some horrible, unexpected mistake or surprise that will crop up on a credit report, like a personal-finance sea monster," she says. Now comfortably settled in her New Jersey apartment, Crane says her experience in the New York-area rental market had conditioned her to accepting credit checks as a standard part of the process. Not so for Brian Keith, a building manager for Pacific Crest Property Management in Seattle, who says his firm adopted an online application process this year that includes an option to authorize a full background check, including credit, criminal, and rental history. Keith says that even though the recession has slowed the rental market, he has had to reject two candidates in the past year over credit issues. "Collections are a real red flag," he says, "but we do take into consideration special circumstances like divorce and job loss."

Walk the Line: Your Significant Other

Does a walk down the aisle necessitate a credit check? Sherrie White thinks it does. White, who owns Missouri-baszed signage company White? Signs, had been dating a man for six years when they began contemplating a move and early retirement: a big financial commitment that White didn't take lightly. Though it's illegal to access another person's score without a legitimate business reason, White says she and her partner went to her credit union to pull their individual reports -- and that's when White learned that, while her credit was stellar, his was trashed. The couple broke up within the year.

Warning Sign

"Financial compatibility is important, and he had been lying," she says. Now White is engaged to another man. "Yes, we've shared credit scores," she says. "And yes, there will be a credit report check before the wedding.

In what has been urged as a must-have by real estate professionals and builders, the $8000 tax credit for first-time home buyers (previously due to expire Nov. 30), has been extended through April 30, 2010, according to the Associated Press. Not only has it been extended, but it has also been expanded to include more buyers.

Details on Tax Credit Extension:

$8000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers extended for buyers who sign a contract by April 30, 2010 (and who close by the end of June).
$6500 tax credit offered to homebuyers who have lived in their current residence at least five years and who want to “trade up” (buy a new primary residence).
Couples earning as much as $225,000 a year and individuals earning up to $125,000 would qualify (up from $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples).
Tax credit not applicable for those buying homes worth more than $800,000.
Those who sell their new home or stop using it as their main residence within three years would have to repay the credit.
