Popeye plants green vegetables in his backyard only to be destroyed by cattle which belongs to Bluto.This is what "Popeye The Sailor Man" all about. The characters in this comic is limited to only three to four characters which makes it even more special but the rivalry never ends. Popeye being a good man always end up in a positive note whereas Bluto being a crook all the time gets bashed up by Popeye. Bluto having the advantage of physical structure can never manhandle Popeye. Popeye after taking spinach is always stronger and tougher than Bluto in spite of his relatively smaller physics. While everyone was having fun and enjoying New Year ’s Day, I was indulged in my own kind of fun. Usually on every New Year’s Day I visit Budhanilkantha temple and this time around I did not. I tried to change the way I welcome a new year. I decided to listen to songs for the whole day without going anywhere outside as it was an off day and I couldn’t figure anything else than to listen to music.

The first one I started with was the newest album I had in my collection and I will be talking about that very album only. It was the greatest hits of Six Feet Under. I did not find it as hard as other death metal bands. The whole album consists of song without any double bass in drum which is sad to me. The guitar riffs are great and so is the vocal and the only thing that lacked in this album was songs with double bass drumming. The lyrics are good and the one called “Amerika the brutal” shows a lot of frustration and anger against America’s current policies of invading Afghanistan and Iraq. The other one called “Anti police” is also a great one. The one I liked the most is called “Rock N Roll ain’t noise pollution”, however I am not sure if it’s a covered version or was it Six Feet Under’s original composition because I have heard ACDC sung it before. Nevertheless this number is great and the growling vocal suits the song and melody to the maximum.
I did not like this album very much but it’s worth listening after all Six Feet Under is one of the most popular bands in their genre.

The literal meaning of Bagh Chal is tiger’s move. One of the most popular games which is originated in Nepal is Bagh Chal. It is basically a strategic board game which is played between two players. The rules are simple and it doesn’t need any special pieces like we need in chess or snakes and ladders.
One of the two players plays the tiger and other one plays sheep. There are four tigers and twenty sheep. The main object for the tiger is to jump over a goat and kill it and for the sheep, the main goal is to trap the tiger. If a tiger is able to jump over a sheep, then the sheep is dead. But while jumping over a sheep, the tiger has to follow a straight line and can jump only over a single sheep at a time. The movement of both the tiger and the sheep is just one step to an intersection of the lines. When five sheep are dead the tiger is the winner. And if all the four tigers have nowhere to move when the sheep has blocked their way, the sheep would be the winner. The movement of either the tiger or the sheep is only one step from one intersection to the other.

This picture is a perfect example of tiger losing the game. The big black dots represent tigers and the small blue dots represent sheep. All the intersections are filled leaving only one spot. The tiger has no space for any movement and thus the sheep is the winner here.
This bagh chal is a very strategic game and a lot of concentration is necessary. 3 S Jam Session

Sunil Dai who had been to Dubai for a couple of years is back here. The other Sunil Dai never left for anywhere and lastly another Sanuraja Dai is also here who runs the most popular music institute in town called “Kaleidoscope Music Institute. These three Dais are music veterans and they haven’t performed live for quite a while. It was only yesterday when we were all just have chats, one of them brought his laptop and showed us their old live performances. This is when they all decided to jam up though the day hasn’t been fixed I am anxiously waiting for that day. All of those 3 S dais know what guitar is. I have heard them playing Jimmi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, JJ Cale, Dire Straits, Eagles, ZZ Top to name some. And this time around I can’t wait to see them perform live which would just be a jam up session for them and no commercialization. One of the Sunil Dais is soon leaving for Dubai so they have planned to jam up. Everyone of those Dais were found to be saying, “Yeah its been quite sometimes we haven’t played together, let’s make a night”.

I have already booked a ticket (infact just a seat) to be with them when they will be jamming. I have seen a couple of music videos of those veterans and watched them jam and this time its going to be huge.

We will be having some good friends on that day and will be writing a good article dedicating those music veterans when the show finishes.

One of the best music videos that I have watched so far is the big hit by “4 Non Blondes” called “What’s up”. The video is simply great and the song is equally good. The center of attraction in my regards in the video is the bass player. Wow she is cool with her notorious attitude and she is the one to be looked upon. The lead guitarist is great and so is the drummer. Swinging high in the air, jumping around, and playing yoyo is all what I enjoyed watching in this great video.

I am familiar with this particular song only, performed by 4 non blondes and have never heard any other songs. This classic number was enough to introduce 4 non blondes in the music world. What I love about 4 non blondes is that, being a girl band they are not into showing their bodies just to catch attention. So these ladies have that rock attitude. If you are looking for some real professionals in a band with extreme talents, which band would you look upon to? Choose any band of such professionalism and talents from any genre. Which one did you choose?

I would choose “Dream Theatre” in this category. If you haven’t heard or watched their videos, you surely are missing something. They are the most technically sound band with a bunch of real talents. Just name any member like the vocalist he doesn’t need any exaggeration at all, John Pertucci a guitar virtuoso, the bassist who happens to be my number one bassist of all time and you wont believe your eyes when you see him playing bass, he plays and runs his fingers on the fret board twice more than a usual lead guitarist (more precisely Edge of U2) and finally the drummer, just watch him play and you’ll admire him as well.

Though words are not enough to describe what Dream Theatre is all about. They are a group of original talented musicians. I recently read in a book which said “Dream Theatre is such a band which is listened and watched by musicians. The number of professional musicians watching and listening to Dream Theater outnumbers non musicians.” You better watch them perform live and judge it by yourself. They will prove it to you.

David Blaine And Chris Angel

I had watched some shows in television of David Blaine. He is a total magician and freaks everyone for the first time. The way he talks, walks and behaves seems too abnormal but the tricks he shows is outstanding. Standing on the top of a beam or sitting inside ice cube for days were the centre of attraction but for me the tricks he showed with cards were fabulous. Biting a coin into two halves, pulling wing of a chicken, lifting his body high off the ground were simply mind blowing.

Is he for real? Is this all real? I had to believe all what I saw on television. Because whatever he did, he did in the streets and there were no cheatings. The first time I saw him showing his magic on television, I never believed that such black magic still existed. With excitement and astonishment, I was continuously laughing and could not help myself any my friends as well. Everyone was laughing in amazement. I even called some of my friends to watch that channel to see unbelievable magic.

I don’t know any further about David Blaine right now as I don’t watch television like the way I used to watch. It was only yesterday, similar magician shocked me. It was Chris Angel. The only thing what I managed to see on television was, he sat on a car, sped up and the car simply vanished in the air. There was nothing, no lighting effects, no curtains and nothing, but he simply vanished along with the car. Uff it was unbelievable. It was replayed more than twice and there was no cheating and the car simply vanished. What in hell was that? I couldn’t believe my eyes and the people gathered in that site too didn’t believe themselves what they saw. Are these guys for real? Are they from the same place that were are from? I was totally freaked out.

Wherever they are from, these guys David Blaine and Chris Angels are superb magicians. I have to admit that they have some kind of inhumane power. Next time when you hear about them, do not miss out their shows on television.

A tribute to Bonjovi

One of the largest brand in Nepal the Surya Nepal organized a series of concerts dedicating to the rock legends which included Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and a number of other legends from the 60s and 70s. One of them was a tribute to Bonjovi. The gig had been done to promote some limited pack of Surya Cigarettes.

Luckily I happened to manage to go for the Bonjovi Tribute one. The venue of that gig was at one of the best restaurants but with the traditional nepali culture. The traditional culture here refers to the tradition of licking big shot’s foot and only those big shots would get attention. There’s no room for anyone who don’t speak English. I was used to such situations and I had my own way of approaching them.

My personal intention w as just to enjoy the music and I was accompanied by one of my colleagues. Jigme and the Strings was the band performing the Tribute to Bonjovi. The show was supposed to kick off at 7.00 pm sharp and here as well, nepali culture played a vital role, not starting the show in the stipulated time. I was fancied by this particular gig because, I can rhyme along some popular bonjovi’s numbers and I love singing along with the performers specially when they do bonjovi songs..

The show started with an acoustic version of Bonjovi’s not so old and not so new number called “It’s my life”. Jigme sang it pretty well and was well received by the crowd gathered in a comparative less number. The second was also an acoustic version and a solo performance. I really liked Jigme’s voice and he covered “Wanted Dead Or Alive” very well.

After these two great numbers, the rest of the band joined Jigme. The Strings which is very popular in doing live shows performed “I live my life for you”, “Shine”, “Not for you”, “Hard to handle” and other popular songs by various artists including John Mayer. I thought that this gig would only feature Bonjovi as the name suggested but the band played more songs from different artists rather than doing Bonjovi numbers.

All in all I enjoyed the gig. I was anticipating to rhyme along the band in songs like,”I’ll be there for you” but in vain. The gig was worth an attendance and it was one of a kind of experience to me.

I have an online acquaintance from England who is just too crazy about Bonjovi and Richhie Sambora in particular. She would have enjoyed the show, had she been in Nepal.

One of the best bands that the world has seen with a very unique touch is Oasis. They have set themselves in the world of music with their unique identity. They are a good group with a very unique blend of acoustic and electric guitar works.

Both the nations had some great bands but when it comes to alternative and grunge, the US of A comes in front I guess. The great bands like Alice In Chains, Peal Jam, Nirvana they all hail from US. I can’t name a band in such genre which comes from the UK.

Along with these two nations, there are some other countries which have brought some great artists. Canada has Bryan Adams, Germany has Scorpions, Australia has ACDC, Finland has U2, Brazil has Sepultura to name some of the most popular bands. This shows that the race is not just between the UK and the US. There are some other places with great musicians.

I personally prefer English bands and I don’t have any specific reasons for my preference and among them Oasis is my best which has a typical English flavor.

Alter Bridge : One Day Remains

I had been a Creed fan since it came up with a hit called "With Arms Wide Open". In an instant I started listening to Creed. The third and the final album by Creed was "Weathered" which went hit and was listed among the top selling album. Among the number of songs in that album, "my sacrifice" was a huge hit though other numbers like "stand here with me" and "one last breathe" too did quite well. After "Weathered" Creed vanished like nothing.

The band members leaving the lead vocalist Scott Stapp formed "Alter Bridge". Their first album "One day remains" did not do well commercially, but for me it was a good album. I was always fascinated by Mark Tremonti's guitar playing and this album wasn't disappointing one.

I am really having the worst of times right now and nothing is working my way. I really felt quite refreshed after going through this album. The lyrics are quite inspiring and the guitar riffs are just great. The vocalist is good and suits the music and melody which they compose and play. The songs like "metalingus", "burn it down", "down to my last" and "open your eyes" are the numbers which I liked most. The rest of the songs are good as well which are composed very beautifully.

The album might not have done very good in the top charts but it's one of the best albums that I have heard in recent times.
