An independent Scotland: a stupid dream or a chance for better? [O Scoţie independentă: un vis stupid sau o şansă de mai bine?]

On Scotland’s Day, the Scottish National Party (SNP) probably thought of making a ‘pleasant surprise’ to the people of this country. The Scottish Executive anounced that, by next November 30, a referendum for independence will be held.

The two politicians in charge of the devolved Scottish Government – both with rather ‘fishy’ names: Alex Salmond (First Minister), and Nicola Sturgeon (Deputy First Minister) – seemed delighted to give the news to the country.

These two leaders – whose biographies show they are decent ‘provincial politicians’, with a ‘big plus’ for Salmond, who seems to be a staunch anti-abortionist (part of the ever shrinking group of pro-life political leaders in Britain) – appear so satisfied with their decision…

…as if all problems of the people living in Scotland could be miraculosuly solved in an independent country!

…as if the ‘chains’ which keep Scotland ‘enslaved’ by the Westminster Parliament and Government is the first and foremost concern of the Scots!

…as if the last obstacle staying in front of this dream coming true was merely the cost of the referendum – £ 9 million!

Unworthy of trust as polls can be, there’s a recent one claiming that only 20% of the Scots want to live in an independent country, while 32% want it to remain part of the UK.

Interestingly, 46% want increased powers for the Scottish Executive, therefore, given a well-ochestrated campaign, the Scots could (hypotetically) say YES to independence.

Although I met at least two people (with an age difference of some 55 years between them !) who would agree with independence, for most other Scots whom I talked to such a decision wouldn’t make sense.

In my view, only if a Tory Government would push the UK out of the EU or I-don’t-know-what kind of economic catastrophe struck England (but Scotland couldn’t be immune to that, could it?), would the Scots vote for independence.

One of the pro-independence lobby's arguments states that if Scotland received its geographical share of Norh Sea oil revenues, it would have a budget surplus of £ 800 million, unlike the budget deficit it has to deal with these days.

More money at one’s disposal often brings only bigger problems, and no genuine solutions. Does Scotland have better politicians than those whom the entire Britain sent to the Westminster Parliament?

Ortodoxia în Scoţia (7) [Orthodoxy in Scotland]

Primul lucru pe care l-am aflat despre Ortodoxia scoţiană, cu puţin înainte de a lua parte la prima Sfânta Liturghie, avea să aibă legătură cu…

....monstrul din Loch Ness – un personaj de care începusem un pic să fiu sătul, deşi eram doar în a patra mea zi pe tărâm scoţian.

Aşa cum, dintr-un capăt în altul al României, dai peste obiecte cu Dracula în orice prăvălioare cu suveniruri, şi în Scoţia nu lipseşte un astfel de ‘pseudo-simbol naţional’ (nu ştiu cum să-i zic exact).

Nu ştiu ce preţ or pune scoţienii pe un asemenea simbol, dar pesemne că turiştii sunt atraşi de monstrul acesta a cărui înfricoşătoare reputaţie are cu mult peste cei 75 de ani, de când a devenit un mit al secolului 20.

Mi se păreau deja obositoare povestioarele acestea un pic isterice, când primul prieten de aceeaşi credinţă pe care mi l-a adus Dumnezeu în Scoţia mi-a arătat ceea ce se pomeneşte a fi fost locul izvorul Sfântului Columba.

Acest loc care aminteşte de Sf. Columba se află la Invermoriston, aproape de Fort Augustus – localitate cu mai puţin de 650 de locuitori, unde se află o capelă ortodoxă, deşi se mai ţin Liturghii, din când în când, şi în alte locuri din Scottish Highlands.

Mica aşezare (cu nume oarecum pompos, care îţi creează aşteptări, nu?) purta odinioară numele Kilchumein, adică ‘chilia lui Cumein’, (scris şi Chumein sau Cumeine – vezi ultima imagine), un Sfânt ucenic al Sf. Columba.

După toate balivernele hiperbolizate de o lume flămândă de poveşti uşor de servit turiştilor – iar scoţienii sunt buni să vândă altfel de istorioare (vezi aici sau aici) – în sfârşit, am auzit o relatare credibilă.

Evident, n-ar fi credibilă pentru cei gata să creadă orice trăznaie (chipurile, dovedită ştiinţific!), dar să refuze Adevărul. Mie mi-a fost destul să ştiu că, până acum vreo 1,500 de ani, o fioroasă creatură acvatică îi teroriza într-adevăr pe locuitorii acestor meleaguri.

Balaurul avea să le dea pace oamenilor numai după ce Sf. Columba (venit din Irlanda şi pusnicind o vreme în insula Iona, din vestul Scoţiei) l-a supus, nu prin vreo luptă spectaculoasă, ci prin numele Mântuitorului nostru Iisus Hristos.

Tradiţia despre viaţa sfântului spune că, în timpul uneia din călătoriile misionare ale Sf. Columba a avut trebuinţă să traverseze Loch Ness, dar chiar când a ajuns pe malurile sale a întâlnit nişte oameni care îl îngropau pe un confrate de-al lor ucis de balaur.

Relatările potrivit cărora monstrul l-a înecat pe cel ucis (şi nici cadavrul nu i s-ar mai fi găsit, dacă oamenii care acum îl duceau la groapă nu ar fi încercat să-l salveze), nu l-au descurajat pe Sf. Columba. Şi nici pe ucenicul său, Lugbe, care a primit o ascultare pe care mulţi ar fi şovăit să o îndeplinească.

Sfântul i-a spus să traversere râul înotând şi să aducă o barcă de pe celălalt mal. “Nebunie curată”, şi-or fi zis cei care îşi plângeau prietenul mort, dar Lugbe nu s-a descurajat nici când balaurul s-a apropiat de el, gata să-l înghită.

De pe mal, Sf. Columba a ridicat mâna, imperturbabil. Făcând semnul Sfintei Cruci, i-a poruncit, în numele Domnului şi Dumnezeului său Iisus Hristos, să se întoarcă în adâncuri fără să-l tulbure pe Lugbe.

Creatura s-a supus, lucru ce i-a cuprins de uimire pe localnicii din neamul picţilor care îi mai văzuseră pe mulţi de-ai lor răpuşi de monstru. Graţie acestei minuni, Sf. Columba nu a avut prea mult de trudit, pentru a-L face cunoscut pe Dumnezeul Cel Adevărat prin Scottish Highlands.

La 14-15 veacuri de atunci, o bună parte din veniturile celor care locuiesc pe malurile Loch Ness depind în bună măsură de câte paie se pun pe vâlvătaia iscată de brand-ul Nessie – numele comercial dat creaturii din adâncuri.

Ca afacere, nu pot să zic că nu este simpatică. Oare numai atât să reţină urmaşii picţilor şi scoţilor – groaza strămoşilor lor, dar nu şi bucuria venirii din întuneric la Lumină?

Poate sunt prea sensibil, dar eu zic că este trist să vezi cum această Nessie nu a mai reţinut decât un ciot de mit, din care Sf. Columba (pe care l-am remarcat tot ca brand pe ici pe colo) lipseşte. Tot atâta legătură mai are Nessie cu Sf. Columba, cât Santa Claus cu Sf. Nicolae…

Cam tot la acelaşi nivel tinde să se reducă legătura dintre Church of Scotland şi Church of England cu Iisus Hristos, în numele Căruia pretind că mai vorbesc.

El nu este mai mult decât un personaj (încă pozitiv, dar nu pentru toţi britanicii aflaţi în plin proces de decreştinare!) sau concept (într-o ciorbă de concepte politic corecte).

M-am bucurat să văd că ortodocşii de pe aceste meleaguri încearcă încă să reînnoade legătura cu Sfinţii care au adus creştinismul în Scoţia şi că am putut (cât mi-a permis vocea mea măgărească) să cânt şi eu troparul Sf. Cumein, chiar de ziua lui.

About public transport in the UK (10) [Despre transportul în comun în UK]

This may be one of the weirdest posts I’ve ever published here, as only the pictures have anything in common with the theme of the curent series… But I can’t help writing another little story on an up-to-date Romanian reality, using British realities as background.

I may be hopelessly trapped within my own vanity – foolishly imagining that this MunteanUK is somehow interesting (?!) within its bizzareness or, at least, remains very different than a million other dull blogs.

Anyway, here’s what crossed my mind as I remembered the guy in the second image. He is a crook who approached me in Victoria Coach Station, and who tricked me into giving him £ 3-4, so that he could buy a ticket.

It didn’t matter that I had just heard Big Brother’s voice warning the passengers against this peculiar sort of beggars. Like all crooks, he came up with a what appeared to be a convincing story, almost hypnotizing me.

He fooled me just like a big Senegalese made me believe he was offering gold to me (a fascinating story, but only in Romanian) three years ago, in Cape Verde. Both in this British bus station and in Mindelo, I felt I was being tricked just as this was happening, but I couldn’t prevent it.

It wouldn’t be true to say that I am experiencing the very same feeling ahead of the Romanian presidential elections. Yet I wonder whether I’m not being tricked again, as long as – unlike most of the Romanian citizens – I want to go and cast my ballot.

Many people in Romania, of all ages and walks of life – both from the ever shrinking group of Orthodox faithful who practice their belief, and from the bulk of irreligious people – won’t bother to vote. Nevertheless, I want to do it.

I’ve made up my mind ever since my ‘favourite’ announced that he would be running for presidency this year. Although I’m far from being hyperenthusiastic (I’m leaving that for Obamaniacs all over the world), I’m comfortable with my decision.

Democracy is often a Russian roulette, and there’s not much genuine choice left for the voters. Citizens can only choose between some characters who had been previously pushed on the political stage by puppeteers.

Is the same choice left for Romanians tomorrow?! I couldn’t tell. All I honestly feel (it’s a feeling, I can’t explain it!) is that voting is better than not voting. I don’t believe in the theory of sanctioning (or delegitimizing) the political leadership by voting absenteeism.

Far be it from me to judge those who choose not to vote. God will judge us all, most likely not according to our political choices, like we often judge one another. Whether we vote or not, I feel like the whole country is in a bus station on the eve of these elections.

We can hop on the right or the wrong bus, not necessarily according to our wise or unwise choice, but to God’s will. The safety of the journey ahead of us depends not so much on the skills of the driver; it is all up to the Lord, and to how closely we follow His commandments.

Urme româneşti pe cuprinsul UK (5) [Romanian traces throughout the UK]

În lipsa unei legi privind votul prin corespondenţă, nu cred că altfel decât ca o ‘penibilă risipă’ s-ar putea defini orice încercări de a le asigura posibilitatea să-şi exercite dreptul la vot pentru cetăţenii români din străinătate.

Primul lucru cu care au ‘rupt-o’ oamenii plecaţi peste mări şi ţări o reprezintă clasa politică românească. Aşadar, mi-e greu să cred că – inclusiv dacă şi-ar putea trimite votul prin poştă, cum şi-l trimit americanii de peste hotare – ar face-o mult mai mulţi decât până acum.

Odinioară, era la modă să fie criticat Ministerul Afacerilor Externe (MAE) că n-a făcut şi n-a dres pentru ‘garantarea’ acestui drept pe care vreo 90% din românii de peste hotare nu vor să-l exercite. Dar cred că mai sunt justificate astfel de mustrări de vreo doi ani încoace.

Cu prilejul ultimelor scrutine (mai 2007, noiembrie 2008, iunie 2009) s-au făcut eforturi logistice considerabile, ca să existe cât mai multe secţii, în cât mai multe oraşe locuite de românii din Europa şi SUA.

Evident, nu s-or fi făcut de dragul ‘bieţilor români aflaţi în pribegie’, ci pentru evitarea criticilor, dar s-au făcut. După umila mea părere, s-a cam ajuns la maximum de secţii pe care Statul român le poate organiza pe teritoriul altui stat, oricât de prieten va fi fiind acela.

În plus, precizări peste precizări, explicaţii, lămuriri de tot soiul, adrese de secţii de vot – se pot găsi din belşug într-o secţiune specială de pe siteul MAE.

Dar oare a meritat ca, la scrutinul parlamentar de anul trecut, să fie organizate nu mai puţin de 14 secţii de vot în UK, la care să se prezinte doar 749 de români? Oare câţi să fie aceştia din numărul total al românilor din UK?

Desigur, n-ar trebui ‘să se pună preţ’ pe democraţie, dar nici cu aruncatul banilor aiurea nu-i prea în regulă. La fel ca anul trecut, n-oi avea eu date precise despre câţi români sunt în UK, dar cei care au votat sunt, fără îndoială, foarte puţini.

Anul acesta, MAE bate toate recordurile, cu 294 de secţii de votare organizate peste hotare, încât ar putea să primească altă avalanşă de critici. De data aceasta, ele nu vor se vor referi la ce n-a făcut, ci la cât de mult a cheltuit în zadar.

Însă, cel puţin în cazul UK, văd că se vor face nişte economii. În loc de 14 secţii de vot, vor fi numai 8. Dintre acestea, trei – la Londra şi câte una la Canterbury, Cardiff, Leeds, Birmingham şi Glasgow.

UK’s motor vanity fair (12) [Bâlciul deşertăciunilor cu motor din UK]

Although I didn’t like the ‘looks’ of this brand, I couldn’t help noticing quite a few Saab cars, as I was strolling on the streets of Edinburgh.

I couldn’t tell why (I’ve got only ‘aesthetical’ reasons), but I simply find those cars to be some of the ‘ugliest’ in the world.

As always – since there are plenty of jazz and balet fans in the world, why couldn’t there be Saab lovers?! – my opinion could be challenged by the 4,500 members of this Saab Owners Club.

This surely doesn’t look like a car club ‘for the masses’, but rather like some kind of an ‘elite club’.

Not the best of advocates I could invoke, but statistics prove that my dislike is by no means exceptional. Vehicles of this Swedish manufacturer (owned by General Motors) make up only 0,658% of the car park of Britain – some 250,000 cars.

This unofficial history of Saab states that it is one of the quirkiest brands in the world. So be it, but then it seems people tend to buy less and less innovative (weird?!) products in times of crisis.

In spite of the overall car sales in the UK being up 30% in October, Saab sales plummeted by 66.8%.

Results are equally bad elsewhere in Europe, and in the USA as well, therefore the only surprise to me is how some car producers can still survive, after a year of appalling results…

Femeile în UK (14) [Women in the UK]

În ultimul paragraf al acestei postări îmi scăpa ceea ce le-ar putea părea multora drept o răutate, anume că “mi-e greu să-mi imaginez un britanic ducându-se în Grecia, Spania sau Portugalia, cu atât mai puţin Franţa… pentru a studia limba acelei ţări”.

Am generalizat. Am băgat oamenii (toţi tinerii britanici, în speţă) în aceeaşi oală. Şi am ‘comis-o’ în ciuda repetatelor încercări pe acest blog, şi mai cu seamă de-a lungul acestui serial, de a demonta mituri, prejudecăţi, stereotipuri.

Probabil, mi-a părut că dă bine, stilistic vorbind, ‘răutăcismul’ meu. Am greşit. Sau, poate, nu am greşit chiar de tot...

Doar am spus că e “tot mai greu de închipuit (dar nu imposibil!) să vezi un tânăr britanic care merge în străinătate în aceste zile pentru altceva decât băutură, promiscuitate, petreceri salbatice…”

Dar, indiferent de ce ‘viclenii stilistice’ aş stăpâni (defect profesional?!) , ele nu-şi aveau locul, pentru că, în realitate, am cunoscut o tânără din UK care a părăsit temporar Anglia natală nu pentru ‘distraţie’, ci ca să înveţe spaniola chiar între spanioli.

Mi-e nespus de dragă engleza, dar văd că mulţi britanici rămân ‘prizonierii’ limbii materne, fără un minim interes să înveţe alta. Cu atât mai demne de apreciat sunt contraexemple fericite precum această fată din imagine sau cea care urma să plece în Austria, să-şi perfecţioneze germana.

Şi iarăşi mă minunez ce uşor – printr-o simplă pălăvrăgeală (chat) – cu o fată drăguţă şi deşteaptă se pot demonta miturile răutăcioase!

Nu ştiu cum le-or găsi alţii numai pe britanicele care să dea apă la moară ideilor preconcepute despre ele (urâte, grase, proaste, beţive, depravate, chiar violente etc), însă văd că pe mine m-a binecuvântat Dumnezeu să întâlnesc şi să fotografiez numai fete drăguţe, suple, isteţe, amabile...

Ba încă şi – sper eu – cuminţi şi serioase. Desigur că, pentru cei care nu-L cunosc pe Hristos, cuminţenia şi seriozitatea sunt relative, dar eu am speranţa (naivă oare?) că cine se duce din inima Angliei până la Madrid să înveţe, şi mai şi munceşte să se întreţină, este o persoană care îşi ia viaţa în serios.

Măcar atât. Aceasta este prea puţin faţă de “a nu-ţi lua sufletul în deşert”, vorba Psalmistului, însă pentru cei care nu-L ştiu pe Hristos, care n-au cunoscut Adevărul, poate că orice ‘mic bine’ (atât au ştiut ei să facă) îşi va primi răsplata la Judecată.

Un astfel de ‘cel mai mic bine’ este să nu te laşi în voia mării turbate care este lumea, în voia a ceea ce moravurile politic corecte de astăzi spun că ar fi ‘bine’, când, de fapt, ele nu fac decât să numească răul – bine, iar întunericul – lumină.

Când, pentru confraţii tăi de generaţie, contează doar ‘distracţia’ şi banii obţinuţi cât mai uşor (easy money), iar a învăţa o limbă străină le pare multora o pierdere de vreme, poate că eşti cumva un ‘erou’, dacă tu cutezi să faci altceva, să trăieşti altcumva.

Witty bits from what I learned in the UK (12) [Vorbe de duh din ce am învăţat în UK]

The man with the grim appearance in the picture (which I took in October 2007, in Brussels) is Romania’s incumbent president – Traian Băsescu – a character who, in my humble opinion, draws equally irrational devotion and irrational adversity.

The paradox is that he probably deserves both the support and scorn he receives, and he’s no better, nor worse than the kind of ruler Romanians deserve today.

He’s the the one against whom all other competitors in the next presidential elections (due on Nov 22nd, with a most likely run-off on Dec 6th) are running, as the vote will basically be a referendum concerning his person.

Should he be granted a second term or not? ...this is the Shakesperean question troubling the few Romanians – probably no more than a third of citizens eligible to vote – who would bother to go to the polls.

I don’t know if the following piece of information is helpful to anyone in making up their minds about voting for or against Băsescu, but I feel like sharing here another ‘witty bit’ that I learned in the UK.

What I heard is a sinthetic description of Băsescu’s ‘finest hour’ – the 2004 victory in the presidential elections, made by someone very familiar with Romanian politics.

A British political scientist described to me Băsescu’s Orange Revolution as being “the revolution of the millionaires against the billionaires.”

As I said, anyone can take this both ways – as an argument in favour or against Băsescu. I’d rather not give my own verdict, hoping that I’ve still got some readers left who would be interested in posting a comment on this topic.

Din viaţa studenţească (8) – Moartea, o afacere ca oricare alta [Student life – Death, a business like any other]

Foarte uşor şi prea adesea, în UK sau oriunde altundeva în lume, gura lumii se dezlănţuie împotriva ‘tinerilor din ziua de azi’ care nu mai ar mai şti altceva decât să se ‘distreze’…

Şi prin distracţie – care le este predicată neîncetat ca fiind vitală precum oxigenul pentru omul contemporan – se înţelege a bea tot mai mult, a se îmbăta cât mai des, a avea cât mai multe ‘experienţe’ bahice sau sexuale.

Foarte trist şi foarte adevărat că în cazul foarte multora aşa este. Însă cei căzuţi (dar să nu decretăm niciodată că ar fi şi iremediabil pierduţi!) astfel nu fac altceva decât să răspundă ofertei copleşitoare din lumea în care s-au născut.

De-ai fi student în Brighton (fie la University of Sussex sau University of Brighton), cu greu ai putea rezista invitaţiilor la petreceri, concerte, ‘seri speciale’ prin pub-uri, taverne, cluburi, discoteci etc, cărora o puzderie de afişe şi postere le fac reclamă.

Desigur, nu chiar pe toate gardurile, că britanicii sunt civilizaţi şi grijulii cu mobilierul urban… Însă oriunde este loc de afişat, se face reclamă morţii. În primul rând celei sufleteşti, dar şi celei care îţi distruge, încetul cu încetul trupul.

Alcoolul, tutunul, promiscuitatea la care invită ‘serile speciale’, pilula avortivă sau avortul propriu-zis de după – toate asigură locuri de muncă şi aduc bani la buget. Sunt afaceri legitime care contribuie la ‘bunăstarea’ societăţii. Cu ce temei ar putea societatea să ridice piatra împotriva ‘tinerilor din ziua de azi’?

God’s place in a humanist society (7) [Locul lui Dumnezeu într-o societate umanistă]

Not only that this building doesn’t resemble a ‘church’ – it looks rather like an ancient temple or any secular administrative building, doesn’t it? – but maybe it doesn’t even claim to be a ‘church’.

According to the words at the entrance, “all who seek spiritual meaning in life” + “all who believe that religion is wider than one faith” are welcome to attend the… meetings, as they aren’t hypocritical to call them ‘services’.

Well, I guess it’s no secret that I didn’t see myself as part of those ‘all welcome’, and I wasn’t curious to enter. I’d rather stick to my One and Only Church of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It may not make me a better person, but I feel like I should shout it every time I’m passing by a devilish trap like the one in these pictures… “wake up, folks, there’s only only One Church, why are you wasting your lives on these surrogates?”

Be I regarded as ‘intolerant bigot’, whom these ‘open-minded’ unitarians could feel pity for or despise, but I want to stick to Christ’s only Church. There’s no alternative way to salvation, nor a multitude of possible ways like it’s fashionable to believe today.

If you don’t believe that ‘brotherhood-of-all-religions crap’, you’re politically incorrect, and Big Brother may soon consider you a ‘threat’ to the welfare of a democratic society.

One day, claiming that there is One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, and also One Church may be a crime, both in the irreligious West, and maybe even within orthodox countries, where some people are not holding on to the Truth defended by our ancestors.

Nevertheless, as long as I freely can, I feel it’s my duty to warn everyone in search of a spiritual meaning not to go to such a ‘church’. And I assume it’s obvious why I’m not giving any links…

I’m only quoting what you can find there on a Sunday, instead of a Divine Liturgy – which is a meeting with Christ: “themed meeting with music, reflection, readings and commentary”.

Don’t worry of getting bored, as the next meeting has a slightly different agenda: “talk on a religious/spiritual subject followed by informal discussion.”

Nor should you worry about getting up early, as you can reserve the whole morning for ‘having fun’. You are supposed to be there in the afternoon, at 14:45.

Finally, don’t claim it’s too tiring to attend meetings which are held only every fortnight! Oh, that’s such a comfortable way of becoming a better human being or to achieve ‘spiritual growth’ as they call it!

Din raidurile mele prin inima Scoţiei (9) [From my forays into Scotland's heartland]

În locşorul de faţă (de numai câţiva metri pătraţi), situat în inima capitalei scoţiene, poţi intra şi ca într-un muzeu gratuit, şi ca într-o secţie de poliţie propriu-zisă.

Desigur, una în care vei găsi de serviciu un singur ofiţer şi nu chiar non-stop. El este, totodată, custode de muzeu, căruia poţi şi să-i reclami pe bune o infracţiune căreia i-ai fost victimă.

Dacă nu ai plângeri, poţi să-i ceri vreun sfat. Ori răspunsul căutat se află în vreuna dintre broşurile disponibile acolo, după cum arată a opta imagine din cele care ilustrează acest episod.

Pe dinafară, nu arată deloc atrăgător – asemenea altor prăvălioare şi localuri de pe Royal Mile – încât să fii îmbiat să intri. Dar, negreşit, cuvintele “POLICE CENTRE” îţi vor atrage atenţia.

Înăutru, poţi face poze alături de cinci manechine îmbrăcate în uniforme din vremuri apuse până în zilele noastre ori să citeşti mici povestioare despre răufăcători celebri din Edinburgh.

Scoţienii au o pasiune bolnavă pentru cultivarea memoriei acestor personaje care au sfârşit în ştreang, despre care s-au scris nenumărate cărţi şi au încă numele lipite pe suveniri. Mai mult, există şi baruri care le poartă numele.

Pe scurt (în cel mult 200-300 de cuvinte), poţi afla povestea acestor caractere sinistre, precum Burke and Hare, criminali în serie care ucideau pentru a vinde cadavre pentru disecţie unui profesor de anatomie…

…evident, cu aşa ‘furnizori’, nici profu’ ăla nu era mai mult decât un antropolog rasist, dar nu ştiu dacă aceste detalii le mai consemnează filmele (vezi aici şi aici) pe această temă.

Poate şi mai interesant este să pui mâna pe nişte exponate nelipsite din activităţile judiciare dintotdeauna (cătuşe şi bastoane) ori să te aşezi pe băncuţa unde, cu un mănunchi de nuiele, pungaşii îşi primeau cândva osânda.

În fine, poate că peste ani şi ani, vreun cititor de-al meu mă va găsi şi amintirea trecerii mele pe acolo în caietul de amintiri al muzeului – click pe cea de-a noua imagine.

Is the UK such a bad place to live in? [Este UK un loc atât de rău în care să trăieşti?]

According to a study made by these guys, the answer to the title-question is obviously positive, and there are at least nine European countries (why precisely nine or why so few?!) where it’s better to live than in Britain.

I guess it’s not a surprise that, time and again, France it’s not simply ahead of Britain. Once more, the ‘bloody French’ are number one; they have the best quality of life, compared to all EU’s big nations.

If France’s leading place isn’t a surprise, some of the other countries where life appears to be better than in the UK could twist the knife in some proud Britons’ wounded egos…

This is the list: 1. France, 2. Spain, 3. Denmark, 4. Netherlands, 5. Germany, 6. Poland, 7. Italy, 8. Sweden, 9. Ireland, and… 10. UK.

How much better can life be in the Eastern lands of Germany? Isn’t Spain’s economic boom over, and the unemployment rate increasing rapidly? Doesn’t Italy have one of the weakest economies in the Euro Zone? Or what about the poor Poles who were flocking to Britain until a year ago?

Questions like the above are irrelevant, as long as, according to 17 factors – among which: net income, taxes, the cost of essential goods, working hours, holiday entitlement, life expectancy – the life of Brits is of a poorer quality than that of other nine nations in the UE (which have a total population of some 250 million).

What’s really sad is the fact that the UK had the highest net household income – £ 35,730 a year, more than £ 10,000 above the European average – but to no avail. Money simply makes no positive difference.

“There is more to good living than money and this report shows why so many Brits are giving up on the UK and heading to France and Spain”, someone from the company issuing the survey says.

Big money, biggger problems, therefore a much more complicated and unsatisfying life for many Brits. Would this be a correct diagnosis?

Most of these quality of life surveys suck, as they reduce the human to a consumer (not a soul), but there must be some truth in this one. The Brits have been earning more than many other Europeans for the past decade or so, yet this brought little – if any whatsoever! – ‘good’ in their lives.

Urme româneşti pe cuprinsul UK (4) [Romanian traces throughout the UK]

În a patra sâmbătă din acest octombrie 2009 cu cinci sâmbete, va avea loc a doua ediţie a Conferinţei Studenţilor, Profesorilor şi Cercetătorilor Români din Marea Britanie pe care nu pot decât să o salut şi eu. Măcar dacă intră cineva pe blogul meu şi dă click mai departe, măcar să ştie că există aşa ceva, şi tot ar fi un folos!

În sfârşit, altceva – la care m-aş fi dus şi eu dacă mă aflam în UK la momentul desfăşurării. De fapt, cu totul altceva decât anunţurile pentru vreo seară de ‘discotecă românească’ cu care eşti îmbiat din când în când (permiteţi-mi să nu dau niciun link pe această temă).

La acest fel de evenimente ţi-ai aduce aminte exact de chestiile din România (inclusiv anumite preferinţe muzicale) de care nu vrei să-ţi aduci aminte. De ce, mă rog, ai vrea să-ţi aminteşti cum se distrează românii?

Oare măsura succesului în viaţă acesta este: cât, cum, unde, admirat de către cine etc te distrezi? De la ce anume să fii distrat? – iată o întrebare shakesperiană la care omul contemporan refuză să-şi răspundă, deşi absolut totul în viaţa oamenilor de azi depinde de răspunsul la această întrebare.

Oare mulţi imigranţi români (din UK sau de aiurea) suferă că, deşi or fi ajuns la o stabilitate în privinţa confortului material, ceva se întâmplă, încât nu se mai distrează în ţara adoptivă?

Destui imigranţi români din UK suferă de faptul că britanicii “nu se distrează” sau “n-o fac ca noi”, căci astfel de plângeri am auzit. Or fi întemeiate?! Că mie unuia britanicii (mai ales cei sub 30 de ani) , dar mai ales scoţienii mi-au părut destul de puşi pe distracţie…

În schimb, iată ca mai sunt şi împrejurări (precum această conferinţă) unde să te duci pentru că te-a luminat Dumnezeu să-ţi iei viaţa în serios. Poate sunt naiv, poate nu multă lume mai ia în serios şansa de a studia în UK, dar eu sper să fie încă majoritari cei care o fac.

Acolo, eşti între oameni care, poate (sau or fi şi ei ‘închinători la idolul distracţie’ într-o formă mai rafinată?!), au şi altceva în minte decât robia muncă-distracţie-muncă-distracţie, în care trăiesc miliarde de contemporani de-ai noştri.

Oameni cu aplecare către studiu, cu planuri, ambiţii, interese, căutări, curiozităţi, vise... La intrarea mea la facultate, una dintre dezamăgirile vieţii mele a fost să văd ce oameni goi pe dinăuntru (shallow people) ajung studenţi.

Oare ar fi temeiuri să sper că – dat fiind sistemul meritocratic din învăţământul britanic (deşi nu poate fi absolutizat, existând şi critici serioase) – numai oameni interesanţi s-or aduna la evenimentul a cărei promovare o fac acum?

Dacă n-o fi mari chestii să afli din discursuri (deşi temele îmi par interesante), cu siguranţă conferinţa aceasta este o bună oportunitate de socializare (networking), de la care un blogger fotoholic ca mine sigur ar ieşi îmbogăţit.

Evident, numai un mic vârf de aisberg din miile de studenţi şi profesori români din UK va participa. Dar mă bucur că li se oferă oportunitatea să se vadă în acest context.

Sper ca, până la urmă, din conlucrarea organizatorilor, să iasă ceva bun pe termen lung, nicidecum o ‘circotecă românească’ – lucru constatat despre împrejurări în care s-au reunit români din Spania (pe viu) şi Italia (din auzite).

Witty bits from what I learned in the UK (11) [Vorbe de duh din ce am învăţat în UK]

I don’t know how true the next statement is, but I’ve been planning to write something on this issue ever since I heard that the House of Commons has only 450 seats in the debate chamber, although there are currently 646 mandates. Therefore, first and foremost, I humbly ask my readers to confirm as plain truth or deny as malicious myth the above piece of information. I didn’t find supporting evidence online, nor did I – to my shame! :-( – use the opportunity to verify this when I had the chance (as Chevening Fellow).

Taking the risk of this episode being rather a ‘silly bit’ than a ‘witty bit’, in case that the above information is false, I’ve still got another serious aspect to refer to. The total number of Members of Parliament (MPs) in the UK is absolutely huge, when compared to all ‘big democracies’ of the world, whilst being the greatest in the EU!

With a population of 309 million people in 2009, the USA has a Congress made up of 435 representatives, and 100 senators (+ 1, the Vicepresident).

All members of the House of Representatives are changed every two years, and a third of senators are changed every three years (although a senator stays six years in office), I personally believe it’s a pretty good parliamentary system.

Undeniably, there are voices complaining that today’s American citizens are underrepresented in their Congress, but what could the Indians say then?! There are only 802 (552 + 250) MPs elected to the Parliament of India, for a population of 1,198 billion people.

Well, if you asked Britons about their confidence in Parliament, I’m sure you’d get many people saying they feel ‘unrepresented’. Nevertheless, the figures would diagree with them, as merely feeling unrepresented cannot deny the fact that the Brits are better represented than other (most?!) nations of the world.

There are 646 MPs in the House of Commons + 757 (unelected!!!) members of the House of Lords. This makes a total of 1,403 parliamentarians having a great time on the recession stricken taxpayers’ expense :-(

I find it useless to add any of my comments, as long as I can quote some data, illustrating that there are considerably more MPs in the UK than in any other ‘big democracy’ of the EU. For instance, in Germany, the Bundestag has only 611 members, not 646 like the House of Commons!

Moreover, there are only 69 unelected members in Germany’s Bundersrat, a federal council with some (but not all!) characteristics of an upper house. In the UK’s House of Lords, there’s no limitation on the number of peers who can be part of it!

Let us not forget that Germany’s population is 82,1 million, not 61,1 million like the population of the UK. This means that there is one MP for every 121,000 German citizens, while one British MP (at least theoretically) ‘represents’ 43,500 inhabitans.

Femeile în UK (13) [Women in the UK]

Nicăieri în lumea civilizată (?!) nu este uşor să creşti o fiică, dincolo de vârsta de 7-8 ani. Cu atât mai mari bătăi de cap trebuie să ai când vrei să creşti o fată în UK, cum se vede în privirea concentrată a mamei din stânga imaginii.

N-aş zice uitătură încruntată, cum ar putea părea, pentru că, urmărind vreme de 15-20 fiecare cuvânt schimbat între mamă şi fiică (+ stând la o fotoholică pândă în tren, din care a rezultat această poză), mi-am dat seama că discuţia reflecta o bună comunicare între ele.

În ciuda răbdării cu care asculta şi a perseverenţei cu care punea întrebări, parcă îmi vine greu a crede că mama (a cărei vârsta las să i-o aprecieze cititorii, că eu habar n-am!) nu era istovită să audă de proiectele artistice (pictură, design – cam aşa ceva reţin eu) despre care fiica ei (la liceu) tot povestea.

Dincolo de impresiile mele – poate nu or comunica mereu la fel de deschis ca în discuţia urmărită de mine, ce pot şti eu, ca simplu fotoholic?! – contrastează imaginea mamei şi look-ul fiicei. Cum de a putut creşte o mamă care arată a femeie la locul ei, cum se zice pe româneşte, o fiică cu un look atât de funky? Ar decreta gura lumii...

Şi nu e greu să constaţi – cu mintea de la 29 de ani, căci am mai îmbătrânit şi eu şi m-am învechit în rele judecăţi de valoare :-( – că tânăra artistă din imagine n-a făcut decât să-şi urâţească chipul, sub părul blond peroxidat şi dunga de alb trasă în dreptul perciunilor de la ochi până la ureche.

Oare nu i-ar fi stat bine fundiţa ciclamen şi în părul natural sau pe un chip fără fard cu sclipici? ...întreb şi eu ca o babă nesuferită. Poate o fac numai să ascund faptul că, de fapt, nu o dată am găsit mai multe şi mai de interesante de vorbit cu ciudăţelele acestea ca ea, decât cu ălea elegante, mereu în ton cu moda, pline de ifose, dar uscate pe dinăuntru.

Şi uite-aşa, iată cum, la fel ca în precedentul episod, de-abia după o îndelungă introducere ating ideea principală – anume că dificultatea de a creşte o fiică în epoca noastră se poate observa pur şi simplu din cât de diferit arată fiicele de mame.

N-aş vrea să dau verdictul că, odinioară, pe când cele mai multe femei năşteau toţi copii rânduiţi de Dumnezeu (aşadar puteai fi şi mamă a 8-9 fiice) era mai uşor, căci toate vremurile şi-au avut greutăţile lor. Dar era mai simplu.

Însă, fără îndoială, cutez eu să spun, au fost vremuri când, dacă puneai o mamă şi o fiică alături, ele semănau în bună măsură. Nu văd să fie nevoie de vreun studiu ştiinţific care să întărească ceea ce spun; cred că oricine are un teanc de poze vechi în casă poate testa teoria mea.

Evident, prea multe fete ar rămâne nemăritate dacă ar arăta exact ca mamele lor :-) şi nu cred că acest lucru este idealul niciunei societăţi umane. Însă prăpastia dintre cum arată mamele şi fiicele dovedeşte cât de greu se creşte o fată în ziua de azi.

Tot mai puţin cântăreşte autoritatea maternă – exercitată prin puterea exemplului, că nu cred în altfel de autoritate – în modelarea fetelor de azi. Doar nici Hristos n-ar avea autoritate asupra noastră, dacă numai ne-ar fi predat porunci, fără să ne fi arătat El Însuşi şi atâţia Sfinţi ai Săi cum să-L urmăm.

Pierderea autorităţii materne e o boală de secole, căci cam de când ne-a ‘iluminat’ Iluminismul cu satanicele sale valori umaniste, femeile seamănă din ce în ce mai puţin cu cele care le-au dat viaţă. De la diferenţe mici, greu sesizabile, s-a ajuns la salturi uriaşe.

În primul rând, câtă vreme o femeie năştea la apogeul perioadei sale fertile (de la 15 la 25 de ani), între ea şi fiicele ei adesea nu erau mai mult de 20 de ani diferenţă. Pe când, în ziua de azi, când diferenţa urcă la 30-35 de ani, cu greu nu i-ai putea da dreptate unei adolescente dacă respinge sfaturile mamei sale ca fiind ‘din altă epocă’.

Şi dacă epoca ar fi numai alta, apoi încă n-ar fi mare lucru. Marea problemă este că, nu doar în România (fost-comunistă), dar şi în Marea Britanie (de când de ştie ea capitalistă), lumea în care au crescut mamele s-a răsturnat cu fundul în sus faţă de lumea în care cresc fiicele lor. Fiecare epocă este mai rea decât precedenta.

Multe din cele ce erau virtuţi la mare preţ au devenit o ruşine, obiecte vestimentare asociate femeilor uşoare au devenit normă, femeile s-au masculinizat, bărbaţii s-au efeminat, iar ceea ce era dizgraţios şi la bărbaţi acum este acceptabil şi la femei...

Pe vremuri, mamă fiind, erai întrucâtva ajutată de societate să-ţi creşti fiica, căci nu erau atotpromovate alte (non)valori umaniste decât cele pe care i le împărtăşeai tu. Chiar dacă erai neglijentă cu responsabilităţile de mamă, presiunea socială putea compensa această neglijenţă.

Astăzi, n-o fi chiar imposibil, dar cu certitudine extrem de compliat să educi o fiică, în condiţiile în care pe orice revistă pune mâna, în orice magazin intră sau orice post TV sau site ar deschide, ea găseşte cu totul altceva decât i-ai spus că este bine.

Să nădăjduim că oricare*** mamă-muceniţă din zilele noastre – a cărei fiică îşi păstrează căsătoria până la casătorie, care, indiferent ce ar fi greşit, nu îşi adaugă păcatul avortului sau care, fie şi hipnotizată de goana după carieră, păstrează măsura lucrurilor care contează cu adevărat şi ştie că aşa o iluzie nu merită chiar orice preţ – nu-şi va pierde răsplata de la Dumnezeu!

*** NOTĂ: Pentru oricine se va fi simţit ofensat de părerile mele despre credinţele eterodoxe, precizez că nu exclud nicidecum ca Hristos să răsplătească mamele de toate credinţele, potrivit faptelor lor. Nu-s atât de răuvoitor, încât să nu văd că există mame catolice sau protestante, care n-or fi avut cum să cunoască Adevărul, dar îşi îndeplinesc menirea de mamă mai bine decât multe femei botezate în credinţa adevărată de care nu le-a păsat niciodată să o cunoască :-(

God’s place in a humanist society (6) [Locul lui Dumnezeu într-o societate umanistă]

Here’s an interesting observation that I made during my wonderful stay in the UK, when my wallet was filled up with British pounds, not with bills of the Romanian Leu.

This 10 pound banknote (anyone interested – click here for a larger image) illustrates how torn apart today’s irreligious (and once Christian) Britain has become.

It’s a country with such a fascinating history, built up on Christian values which it stubbornly rejects these days – and this time it’s not I, the unworthy blogger, making such a remark this time, but an Anglican Bishop!

On the recto – (shown in an outdated image, as it is so common for monarchs, isn’t it?) the Queen who, among many titles, bears the one of Defender of the Faith, whilst she is also the formal head (Supreme Governor) of the Church of England…

On the verso – (someone who looks like) a grumpy old man, the forefather of the gods of our times (scientists, researchers, experts etc about whom I wrote before), the one whose theory is now an idol throughout the self-proclaimed civilised (?!) world…

The ‘defender’ and the ‘breaker’ of the faith on the same bill! Is it mere coincidence that they meet on a banknote? By no means, I tend to believe…

…especially if we were to take into consideration a Romanian proverb (I’m looking forward for anyone suggesting a British equivalent!) stating that money is the devil’s eye.

Ortodoxia în East Sussex (6) [Orthodoxy in East Sussex]

O mare sărbătoare precum cea de astăzi – Naşterea Maicii Domnului – mi-a prilejuit să-mi amintesc că, între multele lucruri nepreţuite care le lipsesc britanicilor din East Sussex şi de pretudindeni, poate cel mai dureros este lipsa Preasfintei Născătoare…

…din clădirile încă numite ‘biserici’ de către protestanţi, din orice spaţiu public, dar şi din tot mai multe… inimi. Pe alocuri, au mai auzit tinerii de ‘povestea lui Iisus’ (alături de poveştile cu Santa Claus, Peter Pan, Harry Potter etc), dar despre prin cine şi cum anume a intrat El în lume nu pare să mai intereseze pe cineva.

Dacă n-ar fi fost această icoană (click aici pentru imaginea mărită) de deasupra altarului din Biserica grecească din Brighton, plus întreg iconostasul, cu greu ai fi deosebit eleganta încăpere anglicană de orice altă sală de dezbateri. Şi nu oarecari dezbateri, ci parcă din acelea politice.

Cum poate sfinţi chipul Maicii Domnului şi al oricărei icoane orice incintă, fie ea cocioabă sau peşteră! Poate, după păcatele sau dispoziţia sufletească a fiecăruia dintr-un moment, Chipul lui Hristos (mai ales în ipostaza de Pantocrator) te acuză şi te arde cumva, dar Fecioara cu Pruncul te cheamă întotdeauna… Acasă.

“Nimeni nu vine la Tatăl Meu decât prin Mine,” ne-a spus Hristos, dar nici nu poate ajunge cineva cu adevărat la El, fără să se apropie de Mama Lui. Fără ea, mântuirea ar fi un oarecare concept, iar Hristos doar un personaj de basm, nu deopotrivă Fiul lui Dumnezeu şi Fiul Omului.

Este încă destulă bunătate şi bunăvoinţă la oamenii (mulţi – admirabili; toţi – demni de iubire!) din UK... Există încercări de a înfăpui binele, poate chiar de a-L afla pe Dumnezeu… Ori măcar tentative de îndreptare a firii lucrurilor, schimonosite de hedonism, individualism şi consumism tot mai există…

Dar, fără Hristos – şters aproape total din discursul public din UK, nici măcar păstrat fie şi stors de semnificaţii prin supraexpunere, cum se face prin ‘brandul Jesus’ în America – toate intenţiile de mai bine nu vor rămâne decât dintr-acelea care pavează drumul spre iad.

Un Iisus Hristos fără Maica Sa nu există. Aşadar, nici un altar precum cel din a treia imagine (din capela Castelului din Edinburgh), lipsit de o icoană a Preasfintei Născătoare, nu este un altar de biserică, ci o tejghea oarecare.

Aceasta e cancerul sufletesc de care suferă britanicii şi toţi occidentalii. Odată ce altarul lor n-a mai fost altar (de la Marea Schismă), eterodocşii şi fiii lor nereligioşi caută mântuirea – şi-or căuta-o până ‘le-o va da’ Antihrist! – la tot felul de instanţe politice... tejghele, tribune, mese (mai rotunde ori colţuroase) la care se aşază mai-marii vremurilor “în care nu este mântuire.”

There was no authority better informed about the Messiah like the Jewish Sanhedrin, yet they killed the Son of God, Jesus Christ. [EN] Certainly, these wise people are in the same gang with those refusing to see (against their own scientific evidence, apart from the ethical imperatives which they dismiss as unscientific!) that abortion is murder, and not a question of political preference… [RO] Cu siguranţă, aceşti oameni înţelepţi sunt în aceeaşi gaşcă cu cei care refuză să vadă (împotriva propriilor dovezi ştiinţifice, pe lângă imperativele etice pe care le resping ca neştiinţifice!) că avortul este ucidere, nu o problemă de preferinţă politică…

About public transport in the UK (9) [Despre transportul în comun în UK]

I don’t think there’s any train station in the UK (or any train station in the world!) where a photoholic like me wouldn’t be tempted to take some pictures.

Far from being a passionate trainspotter, I simply can’t help finding things worth being photographed (and subsequently shared to the world, as I am doing on this blog) in such places. Stations are true goldmines for photoholics!

Out of my initial 6,800 photos in the UK (2008) – to which I could add another 700-800 (2009) – at least some couple of hundred pics (more maybe?!) were taken in or around trains stations...

...or while I was on a train, and therefore more than once annoying people. It’s somehow risky, but as a foreigner you can always afford to be a bit rude, and not bother for being deemed a weirdo.

Does anyone want to make a truly broad image of the Brits (or any other nation for that matter)? Well, go and watch them commuting, eavesdrop on their conversations, take a glimpse at what they are reading, smell their lunch, and scrutinize their clothes!

There’s no better research tool for this type of cultural studies than gazing around at people in train and bus stations, public toilets (not through holes in walls in this case!), caught in traffic as pedestrians or motorists, shopping in supermarkets etc.

But in today’s Orwellian Britan, obsessed with security and the threat of terrorism, it seems that what my photoholic habits could have gotten me an ‘interview’ with the police.

Chestii d-astea, numai la britanici (21) [Things like these, only at the Brits]

Ca pieton, poate că ţi s-o părea complet neromantic să te trezeşti că, prin City of London, nici să vrei cu dinadinsul, şi tot nu ai cum să te pierzi. Mai mult, pierzi şansa să opreşti din drum vreo fată drăguţă şi să-i ceri ajutorul.

Parcă – oare nu intenţionat, nu-i aşa?! – indicatoarele acestea sunt puse îngroapă prematur o conversaţie. Nu trebuie decât ca fata să-şi rotească privirea în căutarea unui stâlpi precum cel de mai sus şi să ţi-l indice. Cu sau fără o strâmbătură din nas.

Asemenea panouri ordonate ar putea fi încă o dovadă că Statul Dădacă îşi face datoria şi nu lasă nimic să-i scape intenţiilor sale regulatoare – ar zice cârcotaşii…

Sau este o dovadă de civilizaţie, curtoazie, bun-simţ (British civility) – zic eu care, miop fiind, adesea de-abia mă descurc să văd numele străduţelor din Bucureşti, scrise pe tăbliţe prea mici, ori decolorate, ori obturate de vegetaţie.

Ca şofer care n-am condus în UK :-(, nu ştiu dacă faptul că (uneori şi la fiecare 10-20 de metri!) ţi se scrie pe drum încotro să o iei ori la ce să fii atent te ajută sau nu, dar eu cred că este o bună măsură de siguranţă rutieră. Vrei, nu vrei, eşti ţinut cu ochii aţintiţi la carosabil.

Apoi, şi dacă te-ai uita pe marginea drumului, adesea te poate zăpăci de-a binelea puzderia de indicatoare, luminiţe, panouri, exagerat de multe semafoare… Probabil că viteza de reacţie în trafic ţi-ar fi diminuată.

O problemă ar putea fi cuvintele în engleză, dar, cu puţină răbdare, oricine le poate pricepe. Până la urmă, şoferia are propriul ei limbaj, indiferent de limba maternă.

Doar şi eu întrebam prin SUA dacă XING (scris pe carosabilul autostrăzilor şi/sau pe panouri) o fi ceva pentru… imigranţii din China. Aveam să aflu că vine de la eXit crossING (ieşire din drumul principal).

Oricum, la cât de surori vitrege sunt engleza britanică şi cea americană, poate că unui şofer nevorbitor de engleză i-ar fi mai simplu decât unuia care din SUA sau UK care, chipurile, după ce s-a învăţat cu anumite denumiri/sensuri, ar avea nevoie de un astfel de dicţionar de trafic.

[EN] It may be no secret for any European that public and personal hygiene is not one aspect which Romanians could be pleased with. [RO] S-ar putea să nu fie un secret pentru niciun european că igiena publică şi personală nu este un aspect de care românii să poată fi încântaţi.

[EN] But it would be silly to think that the Brits are a ‘superclean nation’. As I said before (here or here), public cleaning in the UK fares better than that of Romania. Yet the people are not very much better at keeping clean. [RO] Dar ar fi o prostie să se creadă că britanicii sunt o ‘naţiune supercurată’. După cum am spus (aici sau aici), curăţenia publică în UK este mult mai bună decât în România. Dar oamenii nu sunt cu foarte mult mai buni la a păstra curăţenia.

[EN] Therefore, it’s categorically not worth risking one’s health by sitting on a toilet seat on a train British train! [RO] Aşadar, categoric nu merită să-ţi rişti sănătatea aşezându-te pe un colac de toaletă dintr-un tren britanic!

[EN] Not that it wouldn’t be equally risky (or at least unpleasant) anywhere in the world… Is it better in Singapore, Japan (foreigners face other risks there! :-)… or where? [RO] Nu că n-ar fi la fel de riscant (sau cel puţin neplăcut) oriunde în lume... Este mai bine în Singapore, în Japonia (străinii înfruntă alte riscuri acolo! :-)... sau unde?

A crossroads of the Orthodox World (4) [O răscruce a Lumii Ortodoxe]

As another summer is steadily coming to its end, and we are awaiting the Dormition of the Theotokos, today’s Great Feast – the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ – gives me the chance to send my good thoughts to dear people around the world by offering them another picture of an icon that remained in my heart.

Again, the image I’m sharing with the world is that of a paper icon taken from the Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St John The Baptist in Essex. I’ve already given this icon (carried many miles throughout Europe before it got from Tolleshunt Knights to Romania) to someone dear to me, but not before taking some pictures of it.

Of all the riches of meanings that the Orthodox faith brings into our life – especially in a world so full of deceptive choices, elusive opportunities, omnipresent illusions – today is one of the most fascinating for me.

I assume I’m not wrong to call the Transfiguration one of the least understood moments in Christ’s life, while actually being one of the most important. Even many Orthodox believers couldn’t tell what that moment really meant.

For the unbeliever, this may be nothing more than one of the weirdest biblical tales. But for those of us who, in spite of our unworthiness, have been blessed to know WHO is the TRUTH, and MEANING of everything, today’s Feast brings one of the most categorical evidence about the divinity of our Saviour.

It’s amazing how St Peter, and the other two Apostles were so irresistibly attracted to the glory of Christ. All of us would, if we ever got so close understanding His true nature of God-Man. In order to ever do that, it is us the ones who need to be transfigured, so that we’d be able to percieve Him in His Glory.

If everything that happened to the Apostles after the Ressurection offered a proof that Christ is the only One worth dying for, in my humble view, St Peter’s reaction facing the Transfiguration proves that He is also the only One worth living with.

People around us couldn’t ever be truly loved unless we knew Him, and unless He (often throught His Saints) weren’t showing us what love is. Without Him, absolutely nothing would make sense, and we'd be completely purposeless without Him.

Without knowing Him, all the ‘inertial motivations’ of being alive (things done just because others of my ‘species’ did them every day) drove me crazy… Why sleep, eat, learn, work, dream, yearn, speak & listen, like & dislike, love & hate, and then… just die… WHY???

Living like most of the religiously indifferent people around me, and like the absolute majority of Brits do, I was thinking of suicide at least 20 times a day. Nothing – neither joy, nor suffering – made any sense to me.

So many things got on my nerves without Him, and it seemed that life was but a neverneding bad dream, with no beginning and no end. What was it to me if it lasted a day, a century or forever?

The bad dream stopped only when I was blessed with discovering the true purpose of human life, which is Theosis, that is personal communion with God ‘face to face’.

With Him, I’ve got the certitude that everything happens for a reason. If I were to remember how I was on the Day of Transfiguration ten years ago, all I can say now is that I am a completely different person.

I am not shouting that I am sinless, nor could I claim that spared of suffering, and – to my utmost disappontment – I can’t say I am a better person. But I am definitely – albeit in an unseen way – transfigured. Instead of being trapped in a meaningless existence, I have a destination, and Christ’s presence in my life is as crystal clear as gravitation to me.

I’m not sure whether the Earth circles around the Sun and not viceversa, I’m not sure whether the Americans really set foot on the Moon… Actually, I’m not sure of anything deemed right, correct or desirable ever since secularism took hold of history, as I mistrust the logic, reason and moral intuition that secular ethics is based upon.

I’m not sure of countless other prefabricated truths forced down our throat by the humanist society we’re living in, while I’m 100% certain that some of these truths are satanic deceits like global warming hysteria, overpopulation, inborn homosexuality etc.

Nevertheless, what I am surest of in this world is that everything about or Lord Jesus Christ is just as He told us, and His only One Church keeps telling us. How I wish that more and more of the certainly unhappy people around me wouldn’t refuse refuse their curiosity about Christ, the only One worth being curious about!

There’s no doubt for me that, one day, we shall all see the One Who the Apostles saw on Mount Tabor almost 2,000 years ago. May we, for the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, share the enchantment of St Peter, therefore have the proper wedding garment on us, and not be clad in the darkness brought upon us by having led a meanigless life away from Him!
